Cutaneous skin carcinoma is a disease of older patients. The prevalence of cutaneous squamous-cell carcinoma (cSCC) increases with age. The head and neck region is a frequent place of occurrence due to exposure to ultraviolet light. Surgical resection with adjuvant radiotherapy is frequently advocated for locally advanced disease to decrease the risk of loco-regional recurrence. However, older cancer patients may not be candidates for surgery due to frailty and/or increased risk of complications. Radiotherapy is usually advocated for unresectable patients. Compared to basal-cell carcinoma, locally advanced cSCC tends to recur locally and/or can metastasize, especially in patients with high-risk features such as poorly differentiated histology and perineural invasion. Thus, a new algorithm needs to be developed for older patients with locally advanced head and neck cutaneous squamous-cell carcinoma to improve their survival and conserve their quality of life. Recently, immunotherapy with checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) has attracted much attention due to the high prevalence of program death ligand 1 (PD-L1) in cSCC. A high response rate was observed following CPI administration with acceptable toxicity. Those with residual disease may be treated with hypofractionated radiotherapy to minimize the risk of recurrence, as radiotherapy may enhance the effect of immunotherapy. We propose a protocol combining CPIs and hypofractionated radiotherapy for older patients with locally advanced cutaneous head and neck cancer who are not candidates for surgery. Prospective studies should be performed to verify this hypothesis.

Single-cell localization and activity of Pseudomonas,fluorescens F113, colonizing alfalfa roots, were monitored using fusions of the Escherichia coli rrnBP1 ribosomal promoter and gfp genes encoding green fluorescent protein (Gfp) of different stability. The monitoring systems permitted non-destructive in situ detection of F113rifpcb cells on the entire root system grown in both the presence and absence of 3-chlorobiphenyl (PCB-2). The root tip and sites of lateral root emergence were found to be hotspots for fast-growing cells. In addition, a reporter strain of P. fluorescens F113rifpcb for degradation of chlorinated biphenyl was constructed, using another gfp fusion with the meta-pathway Pin promoter from Pseudomonas putida (TOL plasmid). Expression of this promoter, which is strongly induced by the PCB-2 degradation product, 3-chlorobenzoate, was tested in vitro and subsequently monitored in vivo on alfalfa roots using the P. fluorescens F113rifpcb reporter. A small but distinct fraction of the introduced bacteria activated the Pm promoter and thus appeared to sense a PCB-2 degradation product in the alfalfa rhizosphere. The degrading cells, which by design were identical to the sensing cells, were located in distinct microcolonies on the root surface or in intercellular crevices between the root epidermal cells. However, PCB-degrading cells were not observed in the root areas containing fast-growing cells, indicating that PCB degradation was not linked to high cellular activity.

Using ac susceptibility, we determine the critical current density J(c) and the flux creep activation energy U of an a-axis-oriented HgBa2CaCu2O6+delta thin film. The critical current density at helium temperatures is found to be 4.6 x 10(4) A/cm(2), i.e., about two orders of magnitude smaller than for corresponding films with c-axis orientation. The temperature and ac field dependent activation energy is consistent with dislocation-mediated flux creep and well described by U(T,H-ac)=U-o(1-t(4))H-ac(-1/2) with t=T/T-c, T-c=120K, and U-o = 0.77 eV Oe(1/2) for temperatures T>45 K and in the field range studied. The activation energy is of the same order as that found in c-axis-oriented films. Below T = 45 K the activation energy is observed to decrease as thermally assisted quantum creep becomes increasingly important., QC 20100525

The thermal-to-quantum flux creep crossover at low vortex densities has been studied in YBa2Cu3O7, TlBa2CaCu2O7-delta, and HgBa2CaCu2O6+delta thin films using ac susceptibility. The crossover temperatures T-cr are 10-11, 17, and 30 K, respectively. Both thermal and quantum flux creep is suppressed as the vortex density is decreased. We observe a two-stage nature in the crossover behavior which appears to be a general property of all the three materials studied., QC 20100525

The temperature, ac and dc field, and current dependent activation energy U(T,H)[(J(c0)/J(c))(mu)-1]/mu governing low-field flux creep in epitaxial c-axis-oriented HgBa2CaCu2O6+delta thin films has been determined from measurements of the frequency-dependent in-phase ac susceptibility. Above 35 K three different thermally activated flux creep regimes can be identified: (i) dislocation-mediated plastic flux creep, described by U(T,H) = U-0(1 - t(4))H-1/2 and mu = 0, (ii) elastic collective flux creep which decreases with temperature and has a weaker field dependence of H-0.22 above a field-dependent temperature Tc.(H) where A acquires finite values, and (iii) reappearance of dislocation-mediated plastic flux creep which rapidly increases as T-c is approached. It is argued that the re-entrant plastic-elastic-plastic vortex creep behavior is driven by the underlying temperature and field dependence of the shear modulus c(66). T-cm(H) marks a line in the H-T plane where the increasing c(66) promotes long-range correlations in the dilute vortex phase and creep becomes collective. At high H and T, c(66) again decreases and plastic creep reappears as the ordered phase starts to melt. The root3 alpha and 3 x 3 reconstructions on the Ge(111)-Sn surface have been perturbed by small amounts of iodine and potassium to test the spectral response in the course of a synchrotron radiation photoemission study. We demonstrate the inadequacy of the static model of the root3 alpha phase at room temperature and of the surface charge density wave model of the 3 x 3 phase at low temperature. Instead, the influence of the charged impurities is consistently explained when considering that dynamical fluctuations in the tin adatom positions are frozen in upon passing the phase transition temperature., QC 20100525

Udgivelsesdato: 2001-Mar, PURPOSE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether there was a difference between machined and TiO(2)-blasted implants regarding survival rate and marginal bone loss during a 5-year observation period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 133 implants (Astra Tech Dental Implants; Astra Tech AB, Mölndal, Sweden) were placed in 50 patients at 6 centers in 4 Scandinavian countries. Forty-eight implants were installed in the maxilla and 85 implants in the mandible. A randomization and a stratification were done, so that each fixed partial prosthesis was supported by at least 1 machined and 1 TiO(2)-blasted implant. The implant-supported fixed partial prostheses (ISFPP) were fabricated within 2 months after postoperative healing. A total of 52 ISFPP (17 maxillary, 35 mandibular) were inserted. The patients were clinically examined once a year for 5 years. At the annual follow-up, biological as well as technical complications were recorded. RESULTS: Of the 133 implants placed, 3 were reported as failed after 5 years of follow-up, resulting in an overall cumulative survival rate of 97.6%. The cumulative implant survival rates were 100% for the TiO(2)-blasted implants and 95.1% for the machined implants. No significant difference in survival was, however, found between the machined and TiO(2)-blasted implants after 5 years. The mean marginal bone loss in the maxilla was 0.21 +/- 0.83 mm (SD) for the machined implants and 0.51 +/- 1.11 mm (SD) for the TiO(2)-blasted implants during the 5-year observation period. In the mandible, the mean marginal loss was 0.22 +/- 1.13 mm for the machined implants and 0.52 +/- 1.07 mm for the TiO(2)-blasted implants from baseline to the 5-year examination. No significant difference in marginal bone loss between the 2 surface groups was found during the 5-year observation period. The formation of thin carbon overlayers at temperatures above 600 degrees C has been studied on the Pt(110)(1 X 2) surface by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM), PES and Low-Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED). Their graphitic character is evidenced through the binding energy of the Cls core-level, the LEED pattern observed and the atomic structure resolved on the islands. The orientation of the graphite layers is determined to be C < 1010 > parallel to the Pt[110] direction. Their thickness and the nature of the substrate are discussed below., QC 20100525
