The Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) are one of the most important parts of intelligent transportation support. The possibilities of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2 V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication modelling and computer simulation are presented in this paper. The results of V2 V and V2I communications simulation, with regard to expected C-ITS services are shown. Gathered results are evaluated in consideration of current and future communication technologies (VANET, 4G, 5G) capabilities.

Urban liability and quality of living indexes do not sufficiently address the travel time dimension, although this influences daily mobility and activity choices. This does not allow, for instance, ranking cities by the time that is on average needed — with one or more transport modes — to get to relevant locations such as hospitals or railway stations. This paper provides a contribution in this direction by addressing the theme of resource reachability at the city of Žilina in Slovakia. By means of isochrone maps, it is shown that the public transport network of Žilina has a good coverage and seems optimized for affordability. Interestingly, the combined use of walking and public transport does not bring a significant advantage in terms of reachability compared to walking when a 30-minute time frame is chosen. Investment into cycling infrastructure, currently under-used and under-developed, would allow a competitive and cost-efficient alternative to the car.

In recent years the topic of Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems is widely studied. Interconnected vehicles able of information exchange can reduce traffic accident ratio significantly. To allow reliable, low latency Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication new network technologies are needed. This paper proposes hybrid network topology for V2V communication scenario to prevent network overload when transmitting safety oriented information. Properties of the proposed topology are evaluated by network simulation.

This keynote paper creates the framework for the 2nd EAI International Conference on Mobility in the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT offers advanced connectivity of devices, systems, and services that goes beyond machine-to-machine communications and covers a variety of domains and applications. The interconnection of embedded devices is expected in many fields including Mobility and Intelligent Transport. In the light of the latest knowledge and scientific projects findings the authors present actual R&D trends in the given field. New ideas, cutting-edge innovations and technologies for mobility agenda are needed together with a multidisciplinary perspective approach. The paper indicates most common recent aspects for future development of the IoT applications for support of Mobility and Intelligent Transport. Research and innovations projects including ERA Chair project in ITS at the University of Žilina are presented as examples of solutions for IoT applications for benefits of citizens (motorized and non-motorized public).

The “Smart Cities” topic has recently become the topic number one in the agenda of both national and international research and development projects. This paper has been written with motivation to present various ideas of experts and professionals from an academic environment that represent different scientific fields of work such as telecommunications, control engineering, traffic engineering, information and communication technologies, etc. The authors believe that using the case of the University of Žilina (UNIZA) the multidisciplinary and synergic character of the topic may be emphasized sufficiently. Therefore a special content form of the paper has been used, based on the “question-answer” pattern. Traditionally prepared papers usually follow one of two possible lines: integration dimension - from research mono-thematically oriented on one technology only up to the fully integrated approach, or socio-technical dimension- from solution of purely technical problems up to the socio-technical perspectives and position of a human in the whole chain. This paper aims to raise a set of key questions representing the most urgent problems of today's smart city agenda and answers to them.
