1. Functionalized mm-scale vapor cells for alkali-metal spectroscopy and magnetometry

Abstract: We describe micro-fabricated rubidium vapor cells with integrated temperature-control functionality and demonstrate their suitability for use in miniaturized ultra-sensitive magnetometers. These functionalized vapor cells (FVCs) embody a dual-chamber design in low-conductivity silicon with anti-permeation coatings and micro-structured thin-film platinum surface traces as resistive heaters and temperature sensors. Thermal tests show our ability to control alkali metal distribution within the FVCs, ensuring a clean sensing chamber for optical measurements. Optical absorption spectroscopy is used to correlate the temperature readings with vapor density and to measure buffer gas pressure, of interest for optimizing sensitivity. Finally, we demonstrate zero-field resonance magnetometry with 18 fT/Hz$^{1/2}$ sensitivity in the 10 Hz to 100 Hz band, limited by laser noise and magnetic shield noise, which indicates that the functionalization does not introduce significant magnetic noise., Comment: Authors HR and MCDT contributed equally

2. Broad Instantaneous Bandwidth Microwave Spectrum Analyzer with a Microfabricated Atomic Vapor Cell

Abstract: We report on broad instantaneous bandwidth microwave spectrum analysis with hot $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in a microfabricated vapor cell in a large magnetic field gradient. The sensor is a MEMS atomic vapor cell filled with isotopically pure $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $\mathrm{N}_2$ buffer gas to localize the motion of the atoms. The microwave signals of interest are coupled through a coplanar waveguide to the cell, inducing spin flip transitions between optically pumped ground states of the atoms. A static magnetic field with large gradient maps the $\textit{frequency spectrum}$ of the input microwave signals to a position-dependent $\textit{spin-flip pattern}$ on absorption images of the cell recorded with a laser beam onto a camera. In our proof-of-principle experiment, we demonstrate a microwave spectrum analyzer that has $\approx$ 1 GHz instantaneous bandwidth centered around 13 GHz, 3 MHz frequency resolution, 2 kHz refresh rate, and a -23 dBm single-tone microwave power detection limit in 1 s measurement time. A theoretical model is constructed to simulate the image signals by considering the processes of optical pumping, microwave interaction, diffusion of $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms, and laser absorption. We expect to reach more than 25 GHz instantaneous bandwidth in an optimized setup, limited by the applied magnetic field gradient. 3. Locally finite two-loop amplitudes for electroweak production through gluon fusion

Abstract: The computation of two-loop amplitudes for the production of multiple Higgs and electroweak gauge bosons via gluon fusion with exact dependence on quark masses relies primarily on numerical methods. We propose a framework that enables their numerical evaluation in momentum space. The method is inspired by the factorization of infrared divergences in QCD scattering amplitudes. It extends techniques introduced for electroweak gauge boson production from quark-antiquark annihilation to processes with external gluons. By combining diagrammatic integrands, we make use of local cancellations between diagrams that automatically eliminate most non-factoring infrared singularities. With a limited number of counterterms, we then derive two-loop integrands for which all soft and collinear singularities factorize locally. We hope that the local subtraction techniques presented in this article will play a useful role in extending the local factorization formalism to two-loop amplitudes for arbitrary processes., Comment: 55 pages, version accepted by JHEP

4. Tensor reduction of loop integrals

Abstract: The computational cost associated with reducing tensor integrals to scalar integrals using the Passarino-Veltman method is dominated by the diagonalisation of large systems of equations. These systems of equations are sized according to the number of independent tensor elements that can be constructed using the metric and external momenta. In this article, we present a closed-form solution of this diagonalisation problem in arbitrary tensor integrals. We employ a basis of tensors whose building blocks are the external momentum vectors and a metric tensor transverse to the space of external momenta. The scalar integral coefficients of the basis tensors are obtained by mapping the basis elements to the elements of an orthogonaldual basis. This mapping is succinctly expressed through a formula that resembles the ordering of operators in Wick's theorem. Finally, we provide examples demonstrating the application of our tensor reduction formula to Feynman diagrams in QCD $2 \to 2$ scattering processes, specifically up to three loops., Comment: Version submitted to journal for publication. Abstract: Astronomical precision spectroscopy underpins searches for life beyond Earth, direct observation of the expanding Universe and constraining the potential variability of physical constants across cosmological scales. Laser frequency combs can provide the critically required accurate and precise calibration to the astronomical spectrographs. For cosmological studies, extending the calibration with such astrocombs to the ultraviolet spectral range is highly desirable, however, strong material dispersion and large spectral separation from the established infrared laser oscillators have made this exceedingly challenging. Here, we demonstrate for the first time astronomical spectrograph calibrations with an astrocomb in the ultraviolet spectral range below 400 nm. This is accomplished via chip-integrated highly nonlinear photonics in periodically-poled, nano-fabricated lithium niobate waveguides in conjunction with a robust infrared electro-optic comb generator, as well as a chip-integrated microresonator comb. These results demonstrate a viable route towards astronomical precision spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and may contribute to unlocking the full potential of next generation ground- and future space-based astronomical instruments.

7. Gratitude despite unease among Swedish male forensic psychiatric patients with substance use disorders: an interview study

Abstract: Purpose Forensic psychiatric inpatient care in Sweden is characterized by strict regulations and adherence to court-mandated rules, with a median care time of 7 years. Comorbity has significant clinical implications, impacting health and well-being, violent behaviour and criminal recidivism, and prolonging inpatient stays. This study investigated the individual experiences and perspectives of Swedish patients in forensic psychiatric care with substance use (SU) disorders, focusing on past, present and future orientations. Methods Ten male forensic psychiatric inpatients were individually interviewed following a semi-structured interview guide. A qualitative content analysis was conducted to inductively analyse the participants’ experiences. The study adhered to the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research. Results Under the main theme of “embracing harmony in opposition”, three categories emerged: (1) unveiling the beginning of SU and its impact on navigating challenges in care, (2) exploring current confined care and gratitude despite unease and (3) yearning for a somewhat normal life. Conclusions Participants’ subjective perspectives underscored the importance of factors such as forensic nurses/healthcare providers in forensic psychiatry considering the patients’ life narratives, their aspirations for the future, their need for a secure environment and patient—staff relationships. These findings highlight the need for structural interventions that emphasize the importance of tailored and comprehensive health plans within rehabilitation.

8. A Remedy for Crime? A Systematic Review on the Effects of Pharmacological ADHD Treatment on Criminal Recidivism and Rehabilitation in Inmates With ADHD

Abstract: ABSTRACT Introduction There is a high prevalence of attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in prison populations compared to the general population, and ADHD has also been shown to be associated with criminality and antisocial behavior. This systematic review examines the effect of pharmacological ADHD treatment on criminal recidivism, ADHD symptoms, and rehabilitation in inmates with ADHD. Methods Adhering to PRISMA 2020 and AMSTAR guidelines, we conducted a structured search on September 6, 2023 using PubMed. We focused on original research published in peer‐reviewed scientific journals, following the IMRaD format, written in English, containing the established search terms, based on participants who met the criteria for ADHD diagnosis (any edition of DSM), and who were incarcerated at the start of pharmacological treatment for ADHD. The primary outcome was criminal recidivism, the secondary outcomes were ADHD symptoms, and rehabilitation‐related factors such as global function, norm‐breaking/antisocial behavior, adaptation to society/institutional behavior, cognitive function, and well‐being. Results Five studies, based on three patient cohorts, were included in this systematic review. Surprisingly, only one study investigated criminal recidivism. That study indicated that self‐reported criminal recidivism was lower than expected among inmates who had received pharmacological ADHD treatment. The five studies showed varying results in the effectiveness of pharmacological ADHD treatment on ADHD symptoms and other rehabilitation‐related factors. The included studies also varied regarding participant characteristics, study design, dosage, adherence to treatment, treatment regimes, and measured outcomes. All studies reported using osmotic‐release oral system (OROS) methylphenidate as their drug of choice. Conclusion We conclude that there is limited empirical evidence to support the efficacy of pharmacological ADHD treatment on criminal recidivism in inmates diagnosed with ADHD. Still, evidence suggests that these treatments can reduce ADHD symptoms and enhance rehabilitation outcomes, which may, in turn, lower the rate of reoffending. We point to the need for more targeted research in this area.

9. Deploying a Steered Query Optimizer in Production at Microsoft

Abstract: Modern analytical workloads are highly heterogeneous and massively complex, making generic query optimizers untenable for many customers and scenarios. As a result, it is important to specialize these optimizers to instances of the workloads. In this paper, we continue a recent line of work in steering a query optimizer towards better plans for a given workload, and make major strides in pushing previous research ideas to production deployment. Along the way we solve several operational challenges including, making steering actions more manageable, keeping the costs of steering within budget, and avoiding unexpected performance regressions in production. Our resulting system, QQ-advisor, essentially externalizes the query planner to a massive offline pipeline for better exploration and specialization. We discuss various aspects of our design and show detailed results over production SCOPE workloads at Microsoft, where the system is currently enabled by default.

10. Learning a Practical Psychotherapeutic Skill in Higher Education in Sweden: A Conceptual Paper Concerning the Importance of Constructive Alignment When Teaching Therapeutic Alliance

Abstract: [Background] In addition to theoretical education, clinical psychology programs should include practical skills training. This skill training may be tied to specific assessment and treatment methods; other skills, such as the ability to create a collaborative alliance with patients, are more generic. Previous research has shown that the ability to build a therapeutic alliance (TA) is often not systematically taught in clinical psychology programs and it is uncertain how this competence is examined. A lack of competence in establishing TA on the part of the psychologist might diminish the effects of psychotherapy. To meet the Bologna Declaration, European universities need to demonstrate constructive alignment, i.e. a relationship between elements of the course content and intended learning outcomes in course documents, and show how the acquired knowledge, abilities, and approaches are assessed. [Method] This conceptual paper reviewed the syllabuses for universities in Sweden offering the five-year clinical psychology program to illustrate how higher education in Sweden adheres to the Bologna recommendation on constructive alignment when teaching TA to future clinical psychologists. [Results] Only two universities out of all eleven universities in Sweden offering a psychology program described satisfactory constructive alignment concerning TA. [Conclusion] This conceptual paper raises awareness of the importance of pedagogic structure when teaching TA in higher education by pointing to the prevailing lack of constructive alignment in teaching TA. The increased awareness will hopefully lead to improved structuring in the teaching of TA.

11. Benchmarking real-time algorithms for in-phase auditory stimulation of low amplitude slow waves with wearable EEG devices during sleep

Abstract: Auditory stimulation of EEG slow waves (SW) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep has shown to improve cognitive function when it is delivered at the up-phase of SW. SW enhancement is particularly desirable in subjects with low-amplitude SW such as older adults or patients suffering from neurodegeneration such as Parkinson disease (PD). However, existing algorithms to estimate the up-phase suffer from a poor phase accuracy at low EEG amplitudes and when SW frequencies are not constant. We introduce two novel algorithms for real-time EEG phase estimation on autonomous wearable devices. The algorithms were based on a phase-locked loop (PLL) and, for the first time, a phase vocoder (PV). We compared these phase tracking algorithms with a simple amplitude threshold approach. The optimized algorithms were benchmarked for phase accuracy, the capacity to estimate phase at SW amplitudes between 20 and 60 microV, and SW frequencies above 1 Hz on 324 recordings from healthy older adults and PD patients. Furthermore, the algorithms were implemented on a wearable device and the computational efficiency and the performance was evaluated on simulated sleep EEG, as well as prospectively during a recording with a PD patient. All three algorithms delivered more than 70% of the stimulation triggers during the SW up-phase. The PV showed the highest capacity on targeting low-amplitude SW and SW with frequencies above 1 Hz. The testing on real-time hardware revealed that both PV and PLL have marginal impact on microcontroller load, while the efficiency of the PV was 4% lower than the PLL. Active auditory stimulation did not influence the phase tracking. This work demonstrated that phase-accurate auditory stimulation can be delivered during home-based sleep interventions with a wearable device also in populations with low-amplitude SW.

12. Detect-and-Segment: a Deep Learning Approach to Automate Wound Image Segmentation

Abstract: Chronic wounds significantly impact quality of life. If not properly managed, they can severely deteriorate. Image-based wound analysis could aid in objectively assessing the wound status by quantifying important features that are related to healing. However, the high heterogeneity of the wound types, image background composition, and capturing conditions challenge the robust segmentation of wound images. We present Detect-and-Segment (DS), a deep learning approach to produce wound segmentation maps with high generalization capabilities. In our approach, dedicated deep neural networks detected the wound position, isolated the wound from the uninformative background, and computed the wound segmentation map. We evaluated this approach using one data set with images of diabetic foot ulcers. For further testing, 4 supplemental independent data sets with larger variety of wound types from different body locations were used. The Matthews' correlation coefficient (MCC) improved from 0.29 when computing the segmentation on the full image to 0.85 when combining detection and segmentation in the same approach. When tested on the wound images drawn from the supplemental data sets, the DS approach increased the mean MCC from 0.17 to 0.85. Furthermore, the DS approach enabled the training of segmentation models with up to 90% less training data while maintaining the segmentation performance.

Abstract: En 2017 con la adopción del Tratado sobre la prohibición de las armas nucleares (TPAN) se abrió una etapa superior en las negociaciones relativas a los temas nucleares, que sitúa al hombre en el centro de las preocupaciones de la agenda internacional para las cuestiones de paz y seguridad. Desde fines del siglo XX, a partir de la incorporación de disposiciones humanitarias al texto de la nueva norma y tras un revolucionario proceso de gestación, se ha revelado la existencia de un desarme de nuevo tipo al que algunos estudiosos han denominado humanitario. En virtud de lo anterior, el presente artículo examina los rasgos principales del proceso de negociación que condujo a la aprobación del TPAN. Para ello, se emplearon los métodos analítico-sintético e histórico-lógico en la realización de la investigación, acompañados del uso de la revisión bibliográfica y el análisis de contenido como principales técnicas, desde un enfoque cualitativo.

Abstract: Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants -- neutron stars and black holes -- are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokande's response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations towards a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. Abstract: El régimen mundial de no proliferación y desarme nuclear está atravesando por una de las etapas más complejas del Sistema Internacional; debido, esencialmente, a la ocurrencia de serios conflictos que involucran a potencias nucleares, y otras bajo su sombrilla, y comprometen la paz y la seguridad internacionales ante la posibilidad de uso de este tipo de armamento. En consecuencia, desde Naciones Unidas se ha exhortado a impulsar la causa del desarme y promover un mundo libre de armas nucleares, con el propósito de preservar a las generaciones actuales y venideras del flagelo de una guerra nuclear; lo cual justifica, en gran medida, el creciente interés en tópicos vinculados a los esfuerzos de Estados no nucleares como México, tendientes al desarme y la no proliferación. Ciertamente, México ha sido un actor histórico incuestionable en esa labor: lideró la adopción del Tratado de Tlatelolco, mediante el cual se estableció la primera Zona Libre de Armas Nucleares en el mundo; y contribuyó, de forma significativa, a la aprobación del Tratado para la Prohibición de las Armas Nucleares (TPAN), texto que ha hecho la más clara contribución a codificar en el Derecho Internacional la ilegitimidad e ilegalidad de estas armas. En virtud de lo anterior, el presente artículo pretende evaluar los aportes de México a la construcción y fortalecimiento del régimen internacional del desarme nuclear, con énfasis en el Tratado de Tlatelolco y el TPAN.

Abstract: Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. 17. Characterizing the spread of CoViD-19

Abstract: Since the beginning of the epidemic, daily reports of CoViD-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths from around the world have been publicly available. This paper describes methods to characterize broad features of the spread of the disease, with relatively long periods of constant transmission rates, using a new population modeling framework based on discrete-time difference equations. Comparative parameters are chosen for their weak dependence on model assumptions. Approaches for their point and interval estimation, accounting for additional sources of variance in the case data, are presented. These methods provide a basis to quantitatively assess the impact of changes to social distancing policies using publicly available data. As examples, data from Ontario and German states are analyzed using this framework. German case data show a small increase in transmission rates following the relaxation of lock-down rules on May 6, 2020. By combining case and death data from Germany, the mean and standard deviation of the time from infection to death are estimated., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures. Abstract: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that is rapidly spreading across the globe. The clinical spectrum of SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia ranges from mild to critically ill cases and requires early detection and monitoring, within a clinical environment for critical cases and remotely for mild cases. The fear of contamination in clinical environments has led to a dramatic reduction in on-site referrals for routine care. There has also been a perceived need to continuously monitor non-severe COVID- 19 patients, either from their quarantine site at home, or dedicated quarantine locations (e.g., hotels). Thus, the pandemic has driven incentives to innovate and enhance or create new routes for providing healthcare services at distance. In particular, this has created a dramatic impetus to find innovative ways to remotely and effectively monitor patient health status. In this paper we present a short review of remote health monitoring initiatives taken in 19 states during the time of the pandemic. We emphasize in the discussion particular aspects that are common ground for the reviewed states, in particular the future impact of the pandemic on remote health monitoring and consideration on data privacy., Comment: 36 pages

Abstract: We report measurements of the flux-integrated $\bar{\nu}_\mu$ and $\bar{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ charged-current cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets using the T2K anti-neutrino beam, with a mean neutrino energy of 0.86 GeV. The signal is defined as the (anti-)neutrino charged-current interaction with one induced $\mu^\pm$ and no detected charged pion nor proton. These measurements are performed using a new WAGASCI module recently added to the T2K setup in combination with the INGRID Proton module. The phase space of muons is restricted to the high-detection efficiency region, $p_{\mu}>400~{\rm MeV}/c$ and $\theta_{\mu}<30^{\circ}$, in the laboratory frame. Absence of pions and protons in the detectable phase space of "$p_{\pi}>200~{\rm MeV}/c$ and $\theta_{\pi}<70^{\circ}$", and "$p_{\rm p}>600~{\rm MeV}/c$ and $\theta_{\rm p}<70^{\circ}$" is required. In this paper, both of the $\bar{\nu}_\mu$ cross-sections and $\bar{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ cross-sections on water and hydrocarbon targets, and their ratios are provided by using D'Agostini unfolding method. The results of the integrated $\bar{\nu}_\mu$ cross-section measurements over this phase space are $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}\,=\,(1.082\pm0.068(\rm stat.)^{+0.145}_{-0.128}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}~{\rm cm^{2}/nucleon}$, $\sigma_{\rm CH}\,=\,(1.096\pm0.054(\rm stat.)^{+0.132}_{-0.117}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}~{\rm cm^{2}/nucleon}$, and $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}/\sigma_{\rm CH} = 0.987\pm0.078(\rm stat.)^{+0.093}_{-0.090}(\rm syst.)$. The $\bar{\nu}_\mu+\nu_\mu$ cross-section is $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O} = (1.155\pm0.064(\rm stat.)^{+0.148}_{-0.129}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}~{\rm cm^{2}/nucleon}$, $\sigma_{\rm CH}\,=\,(1.159\pm0.049(\rm stat.)^{+0.129}_{-0.115}(\rm syst.)) \times 10^{-39}~{\rm cm^{2}/nucleon}$, and $\sigma_{\rm H_{2}O}/\sigma_{\rm CH}\,=\,0.996\pm0.069(\rm stat.)^{+0.083}_{-0.078}(\rm syst.)$.

20. Covariance Intersection to Improve the Robustness of the Photoplethysmogram Derived Respiratory Rate

Abstract: Respiratory rate (RR) can be estimated from the photoplethysmogram (PPG) recorded by optical sensors in wearable devices. The fusion of estimates from different PPG features has lead to an increase in accuracy, but also reduced the numbers of available final estimates due to discarding of unreliable data. We propose a novel, tunable fusion algorithm using covariance intersection to estimate the RR from PPG (CIF). The algorithm is adaptive to the number of available feature estimates and takes each estimates' trustworthiness into account. In a benchmarking experiment using the CapnoBase dataset with reference RR from capnography, we compared the CIF against the state-of-the-art Smart Fusion (SF) algorithm. The median root mean square error was 1.4 breaths/min for the CIF and 1.8 breaths/min for the SF. The CIF significantly increased the retention rate distribution of all recordings from 0.46 to 0.90 (p $<$ 0.001). The agreement with the reference RR was high with a Pearson's correlation coefficient of 0.94, a bias of 0.3 breaths/min, and limits of agreement of -4.6 and 5.2 breaths/min. 21. Multispectral Video Fusion for Non-contact Monitoring of Respiratory Rate and Apnea

Abstract: Continuous monitoring of respiratory activity is desirable in many clinical applications to detect respiratory events. Non-contact monitoring of respiration can be achieved with near- and far-infrared spectrum cameras. However, current technologies are not sufficiently robust to be used in clinical applications. For example, they fail to estimate an accurate respiratory rate (RR) during apnea. We present a novel algorithm based on multispectral data fusion that aims at estimating RR also during apnea. The algorithm independently addresses the RR estimation and apnea detection tasks. Respiratory information is extracted from multiple sources and fed into an RR estimator and an apnea detector whose results are fused into a final respiratory activity estimation. We evaluated the system retrospectively using data from 30 healthy adults who performed diverse controlled breathing tasks while lying supine in a dark room and reproduced central and obstructive apneic events. Combining multiple respiratory information from multispectral cameras improved the root mean square error (RMSE) accuracy of the RR estimation from up to 4.64 monospectral data down to 1.60 breaths/min. The median F1 scores for classifying obstructive (0.75 to 0.86) and central apnea (0.75 to 0.93) also improved. Furthermore, the independent consideration of apnea detection led to a more robust system (RMSE of 4.44 vs. 7.96 breaths/min). Our findings may represent a step towards the use of cameras for vital sign monitoring in medical applications.

Abstract: This paper reports the first simultaneous measurement of the double differential muon neutrino charged-current cross section on oxygen and carbon without pions in the final state as a function of the outgoing muon kinematics, made at the ND280 off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The ratio of the oxygen and carbon cross sections is also provided to help validate various models' ability to extrapolate between carbon and oxygen nuclear targets, as is required in T2K oscillation analyses. The data are taken using a neutrino beam with an energy spectrum peaked at 0.6 GeV. The extracted measurement is compared with the prediction from different Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators, showing particular model separation for very forward-going muons. Overall, of the models tested, the result is best described using Local Fermi Gas descriptions of the nuclear ground state with RPA suppression.

Abstract: The electron (anti-)neutrino component of the T2K neutrino beam constitutes the largest background in the measurement of electron (anti-)neutrino appearance at the far detector. The electron neutrino scattering is measured directly with the T2K off-axis near detector, ND280. The selection of the electron (anti-)neutrino events in the plastic scintillator target from both neutrino and anti-neutrino mode beams is discussed in this paper. The flux integrated single differential charged-current inclusive electron (anti-)neutrino cross-sections, $d\sigma/dp$ and $d\sigma/d\cos(\theta)$, and the total cross-sections in a limited phase-space in momentum and scattering angle ($p > 300$ MeV/c and $\theta \leq 45^{\circ}$) are measured using a binned maximum likelihood fit and compared to the neutrino Monte Carlo generator predictions, resulting in good agreement.

Abstract: This paper presents the first combined measurement of the double-differential muon neutrino and antineutrino charged-current cross sections with no pions in the final state on hydrocarbon at the off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The data analyzed in this work comprise 5.8$\times$10$^{20}$ and 6.3$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino and antineutrino mode respectively, at a beam energy peak of 0.6 GeV. Using the two measured cross sections, the sum, difference and asymmetry were calculated with the aim of better understanding the nuclear effects involved in such interactions. The extracted measurements have been compared with the prediction from different Monte Carlo generators and theoretical models showing that the difference between the two cross sections have interesting sensitivity to nuclear effects.

25. A Deep Learning Approach to Diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis from Smartphone Data

Abstract: Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects the central nervous system with a wide range of symptoms. MS can, for example, cause pain, changes in mood and fatigue, and may impair a person's movement, speech and visual functions. Diagnosis of MS typically involves a combination of complex clinical assessments and tests to rule out other diseases with similar symptoms. New technologies, such as smartphone monitoring in free-living conditions, could potentially aid in objectively assessing the symptoms of MS by quantifying symptom presence and intensity over long periods of time. Here, we present a deep-learning approach to diagnosing MS from smartphone-derived digital biomarkers that uses a novel combination of a multilayer perceptron with neural soft attention to improve learning of patterns in long-term smartphone monitoring data. Using data from a cohort of 774 participants, we demonstrate that our deep-learning models are able to distinguish between people with and without MS with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.88 (95% CI: 0.70, 0.88). Our experimental results indicate that digital biomarkers derived from smartphone data could in the future be used as additional diagnostic criteria for MS.

Abstract: Abstract Background Patients with IBD and chronic inflammation refractory to conventional therapy often demonstrate higher risk of serious complications. Combinations of immunosuppression and biological treatment as well as surgical intervention are often used in this patient group. Hence, there is need for additional treatment options. In this observational study, focused on re-treatment and long-term results, Granulocyte/Monocyte Adsorption (GMA, Adacolumn®) treatment has been investigated to study efficacy, safety and quality of life in IBD-patients with chronic activity. Methods Fifteen patients with ulcerative colitis and 25 patients with Crohn's disease, both groups with chronically active inflammation refractory to conventional medication were included in this observational study. The patients received 5-10 GMA sessions, and the clinical activity was assessed at baseline, after each completed course, and at week 10 and 20 by disease activity index, endoscopy and quality of life evaluation. Relapsed patients were re-treated by GMA in this follow-up study up to 58 months. Results Clinical response was seen in 85% and complete remission in 65% of the patients. Ten patients in the UC-group (66%) and 16 patients in the CD-group (64%) maintained clinical and endoscopic remission for an average of 14 months. Fourteen patients who relapsed after showing initial remission were re-treated with GMA and 13 (93%) went into a second remission. Following further relapses, all of seven patients were successfully re-treated for the third time, all of three patients for the fourth time and one for a fifth time. Conclusions IBD-patients with chronic inflammation despite conventional therapy seem to benefit from GMA. Re-treatment of relapsing remission patients seems to be effective.

Abstract: Background: Patients in the forensic mental health services (FMHS) with a mental disorder, a co-occurring substance use disorder (SUD), and high risk of aggressive antisocial behavior (AAB) are sometimes referred to as the ‘triply troubled’. They suffer poor treatment outcomes, high rates of criminal recidivism, and increased risk of drug related mortality. To improve treatment for this heterogeneous patient group, more insight is needed concerning their co-occurring mental disorders, types of substances used, and the consequent risk of AAB. Methods: A three-step latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify clinically relevant subgroups in a sample of patients (n = 98) from a high-security FMHS clinic in Sweden based on patterns in their history of mental disorders, SUD, types of substances used, and AAB. Results: A four-class model best fit our data: class 1 (42%) had a high probability of SUD, psychosis, and having used all substances; class 2 (26%) had a high probability of psychosis and cannabis use; class 3 (22%) had a high probability of autism and no substance use; and class 4 (10%) had a high probability of personality disorders and having used all substances. Both polysubstance classes (1 and 4) had a significantly more extensive history of AAB compared to classes 2 and 3. Class 3 and class 4 had extensive histories of self-directed aggression. Conclusions: The present study helps disentangle the heterogeneity of the ‘triply troubled’ patient group in FMHS. The results provide an illustration of a more person-oriented perspective on patient comorbidity and types of substances used which could benefit clinical assessment, treatment planning, and risk-management among patients in forensic psychiatric care.

Abstract: El Estado cubano defiende la eliminación de las armas nucleares de forma total, transparente, irreversible, verificable y dentro de plazos multilateralmente acordados, como una contribución efectiva para el logro y mantenimiento de la paz y la seguridad internacionales. En tal sentido, reconoce los principales tratados del actual régimen internacional sobre desarme y no proliferación nuclear. Sin embargo, la tardía ratificación por Cuba del Tratado sobre la No Proliferación de las Armas Nucleares (TNP) ha sido cuestionada; lo cual no tiene en cuenta que la implementación del acuerdo ha estado plagada de serias deficiencias, como la permanente tendencia al privilegio de la no proliferación horizontal, la continuidad de la política de disuasión nuclear, el sostenido desarrollo de nuevos tipos de armas nucleares y el repetido fracaso de las Conferencias de Examen del Tratado. En virtud de lo anterior, el presente artículo se propone evaluar la posición de Cuba frente al TNP; y, posteriormente, examinar los principales elementos que han sustentado la posición de Cuba en relación con el Tratado sobre la Prohibición de las Armas Nucleares, como instrumento necesario para avanzar, efectivamente, en la disposición del desarme nuclear contenida en el Artículo VI del TNP, ante la renuencia de los Estados poseedores de estas armas a dar pasos concretos con tal propósito.

Abstract: Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the PMNS mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40{\sigma} and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. 32. CXPlain: Causal Explanations for Model Interpretation under Uncertainty

Abstract: Feature importance estimates that inform users about the degree to which given inputs influence the output of a predictive model are crucial for understanding, validating, and interpreting machine-learning models. However, providing fast and accurate estimates of feature importance for high-dimensional data, and quantifying the uncertainty of such estimates remain open challenges. Here, we frame the task of providing explanations for the decisions of machine-learning models as a causal learning task, and train causal explanation (CXPlain) models that learn to estimate to what degree certain inputs cause outputs in another machine-learning model. CXPlain can, once trained, be used to explain the target model in little time, and enables the quantification of the uncertainty associated with its feature importance estimates via bootstrap ensembling. We present experiments that demonstrate that CXPlain is significantly more accurate and faster than existing model-agnostic methods for estimating feature importance. In addition, we confirm that the uncertainty estimates provided by CXPlain ensembles are strongly correlated with their ability to accurately estimate feature importance on held-out data., Comment: To appear in Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems 2019

Abstract: Neutrino- and antineutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic-like interactions are measured at Super-Kamiokande using nuclear de-excitation $\gamma$-rays to identify signal-like interactions in data from a $14.94 \ (16.35)\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target exposure of the T2K neutrino (antineutrino) beam. The measured flux-averaged cross sections on oxygen nuclei are $\langle \sigma_{\nu {\rm -NCQE}} \rangle = 1.70 \pm 0.17 ({\rm stat.}) ^{+ {\rm 0.51}}_{- {\rm 0.38}} ({\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-38} \ {\rm cm^2/oxygen}$ with a flux-averaged energy of 0.82 GeV and $\langle \sigma_{\bar{\nu} {\rm -NCQE}} \rangle = 0.98 \pm 0.16 ({\rm stat.}) ^{+ {\rm 0.26}}_{- {\rm 0.19}} ({\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-38} \ {\rm cm^2/oxygen}$ with a flux-averaged energy of 0.68 GeV, for neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. These results are the most precise to date, and the antineutrino result is the first cross section measurement of this channel. They are compared with various theoretical predictions. Abstract: The current laws of physics do not explain the observed imbalance of matter and antimatter in the universe. Sakharov proposed that an explanation would require the violation of CP symmetry between matter and antimatter. The only CP violation observed so far is in the weak interactions of quarks, and it is too small to explain the matter-antimatter imbalance of the universe. It has been shown that CP violation in the lepton sector could generate the matter-antimatter disparity through the process called leptogenesis. The quantum mixing of neutrinos, the neutral leptons in the Standard Model, provides a potential source of CP violation through a complex phase dCP, which may have consequences for theoretical models of leptogenesis. This CP violation can be measured in muon neutrino to electron neutrino oscillations and the corresponding antineutrino oscillations, which are experimentally accessible with accelerator-produced beams as established by the T2K experiment. Until now, the value of dCP has not been significantly constrained by neutrino oscillation experiments. Here the T2K collaboration reports a measurement that favors large enhancement of the neutrino oscillation probability, excluding values of dCP which result in a large enhancement of the observed anti-neutrino oscillation probability at three standard deviations (3 sigma). The 3 sigma confidence level interval for dCP, which is cyclic and repeats every 2pi, is [-3.41,-0.03] for the so-called normal mass ordering, and [-2.54,-0.32] for the inverted mass ordering. Our results show an indication of CP violation in the lepton sector. Herein we establish methods for sensitive searches for matter-antimatter asymmetry in neutrino oscillations using accelerator-produced neutrino beams. Future measurements with larger data samples will determine whether the leptonic CP violation is larger than the quark sector CP violation.

Abstract: We report the measurements of single and double differential cross section of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon with a single positively charged pion in the final state at the T2K off-axis near detector using $5.56\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at $0.6$~GeV, is measured to be $\sigma = (11.76 \pm 0.44 \text{(stat)} \pm 2.39 \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-40} \text{cm}^2$~$\text{nucleon}^{-1}$. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

Abstract: This paper reports the first differential measurement of the charged-current $\overline{\nu}_{\mu}$ interaction cross section on water with no pions in the final state. The unfolded flux-averaged measurement using the T2K off-axis near detector is given in double differential bins of $\mu^+$ momentum and angle. The integrated cross section in a restricted phase space is $\sigma=\left(1.11\pm0.18\right)\times10^{-38}$ cm$^{2}$ per water molecule. Abstract: We report a measurement of the flux-integrated $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current cross sections on water, hydrocarbon, and iron in the T2K on-axis neutrino beam with a mean neutrino energy of 1.5 GeV. The measured cross sections on water, hydrocarbon, and iron are $\sigma^{\rm{H_{2}O}}_{\rm{CC}}$ = (0.840$\pm 0.010$(stat.)$^{+0.10}_{-0.08}$(syst.))$\times$10$^{-38}$cm$^2$/nucleon, $\sigma^{\rm{CH}}_{\rm{CC}}$ = (0.817$\pm 0.007$(stat.)$^{+0.11}_{-0.08}$(syst.))$\times$10$^{-38}$cm$^2$/nucleon, and $\sigma^{\rm{Fe}}_{\rm{CC}}$ = (0.859$\pm 0.003$(stat.) $^{+0.12}_{-0.10}$(syst.))$\times$10$^{-38}$cm$^2$/nucleon respectively, for a restricted phase space of induced muons: $\theta_{\mu}<45^{\circ}$ and $p_{\mu}>$0.4 GeV/$c$ in the laboratory frame. The measured cross section ratios are ${\sigma^{\rm{H_{2}O}}_{\rm{CC}}}/{\sigma^{\rm{CH}}_{\rm{CC}}}$ = 1.028$\pm 0.016$(stat.)$\pm 0.053$(syst.), ${\sigma^{\rm{Fe}}_{\rm{CC}}}/{\sigma^{\rm{H_{2}O}}_{\rm{CC}}}$ = 1.023$\pm 0.012$(stat.)$\pm 0.058$(syst.), and ${\sigma^{\rm{Fe}}_{\rm{CC}}}/{\sigma^{\rm{CH}}_{\rm{CC}}}$ = 1.049$\pm 0.010$(stat.)$\pm 0.043$(syst.). These results, with an unprecedented precision for the measurements of neutrino cross sections on water in the studied energy region, show good agreement with the current neutrino interaction models used in the T2K oscillation analyses.

38. Forecasting intracranial hypertension using multi-scale waveform metrics

Abstract: Objective: Acute intracranial hypertension is an important risk factor of secondary brain damage after traumatic brain injury. Hypertensive episodes are often diagnosed reactively, leading to late detection and lost time for intervention planning. A pro-active approach that predicts critical events several hours ahead of time could assist in directing attention to patients at risk. Approach: We developed a prediction framework that forecasts onsets of acute intracranial hypertension in the next 8 hours. It jointly uses cerebral auto-regulation indices, spectral energies and morphological pulse metrics to describe the neurological state of the patient. One-minute base windows were compressed by computing signal metrics, and then stored in a multi-scale history, from which physiological features were derived. Main results: Our model predicted events up to 8 hours in advance with alarm recall rates of 90% at a precision of 30.3% in the MIMIC-III waveform database, improving upon two baselines from the literature. We found that features derived from high-frequency waveforms substantially improved the prediction performance over simple statistical summaries of low-frequency time series, and each of the three feature classes contributed to the performance gain. The inclusion of long-term history up to 8 hours was especially important. Significance: Our results highlight the importance of information contained in high-frequency waveforms in the neurological intensive care unit. They could motivate future studies on pre-hypertensive patterns and the design of new alarm algorithms for critical events in the injured brain., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: This paper reports on the search for heavy neutrinos with masses in the range $140 < M_N < 493$ MeV/c$^2$ using the off-axis near detector ND280 of the T2K experiment. These particles can be produced from kaon decays in the standard neutrino beam and then subsequently decay in ND280. The decay modes under consideration are $N \to \ell^{\pm}_{\alpha} \pi^{\mp}$ and $N \to \ell^+_{\alpha} \ell^-_{\beta} \nu (\bar\nu)$ ($\alpha,\beta=e,\mu$). A search for such events has been made using the Time Projection Chambers of ND280, where the background has been reduced to less than two events in the current dataset in all channels. No excess has been observed in the signal region. A combined Bayesian statistical approach has been applied to extract upper limits on the mixing elements of heavy neutrinos to electron-, muon- and tau- flavoured currents ($U_e^2$, $U_{\mu}^2$, $U_{\tau}^2$) as a function of the heavy neutrino mass, e.g. $U_e^2 < 10^{-9}$ at $90\%$ C.L. for a mass of $390$ MeV/c$^2$. Abstract: We perform a search for light sterile neutrinos using the data from the T2K far detector at a baseline of 295 km, with an exposure of 14.7 (7.6)$\times 10^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode. A selection of neutral current interaction samples are also used to enhance the sensitivity to sterile mixing. No evidence of sterile neutrino mixing in the 3+1 model was found from a simultaneous fit to the charged-current muon, electron and neutral current neutrino samples. Abstract: Neutrino neutral-current induced single photon production is a sub-leading order process for accelerator-based neutrino beam experiments including T2K. It is, however, an important process to understand because it is a background for electron (anti)neutrino appearance oscillation experiments. Here, we performed the first search of this process below 1 GeV using the fine-grained detector at the T2K ND280 off-axis near detector. By reconstructing single photon kinematics from electron-positron pairs, we achieved 95\% pure gamma ray sample from 5.738$\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-targets neutrino mode data. We do not find positive evidence of neutral current induced single photon production in this sample. We set the model-dependent upper limit on the cross-section for this process, at 0.114$\times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ (90\% C.L.) per nucleon, using the J-PARC off-axis neutrino beam with an average energy of $\left\sim 0.6$ GeV. This is the first limit on this process below 1 GeV which is important for current and future oscillation experiments looking for electron neutrino appearance oscillation signals., Comment: 5 figures, 1 table

Abstract: Estimating what would be an individual's potential response to varying levels of exposure to a treatment is of high practical relevance for several important fields, such as healthcare, economics and public policy. However, existing methods for learning to estimate counterfactual outcomes from observational data are either focused on estimating average dose-response curves, or limited to settings with only two treatments that do not have an associated dosage parameter. Here, we present a novel machine-learning approach towards learning counterfactual representations for estimating individual dose-response curves for any number of treatments with continuous dosage parameters with neural networks. Building on the established potential outcomes framework, we introduce performance metrics, model selection criteria, model architectures, and open benchmarks for estimating individual dose-response curves. 43. Exploring the psychometric properties of the externalizing spectrum inventory-brief form in a Swedish forensic psychiatric inpatient sample

Abstract: Abstract Background The Externalizing Spectrum Inventory-Brief Form (ESI-BF) [1] is a 160-item self-report instrument designed for the assessment of externalizing psychopathology, yet few studies to date have evaluated its psychometric properties, structural fit, and criterion validity in forensic psychiatric settings. Methods Here, we investigated these aspects in a sample of forensic psychiatric inpatients (n = 77) from a maximum-security forensic psychiatric hospital in Sweden. We firstly investigated the reliability. Secondly, using confirmatory factor analysis, the structure of the ESI-BF. And thirdly, using a Bayesian approach, assessed how the three ESI-BF subfactors relate to criterion measures of antisocial behaviors, substance use, and lifetime externalizing spectrum diagnoses. Results The ESI-BF demonstrated good to adequate reliability and internal consistency, with all but four facet scales exhibiting α and ω values ≥ 0.80. Average inter-item correlations for the facet scales ranged from 0.31 to 0.74. However, all structural models exhibited poor to mediocre fit, with model fit values for the CFI being 0.66, 0.79 and 0.87 and RMSEA values of 0.14, 0.12 and 0.09. for the unidimensional correlated factors and bifactor model, respectively. Regarding criterion validity, all subscales of the item-based ESI-BF three-factor model exhibited robust correlations with the Life History of Aggression total, aggression and antisocial/consequences subscales, with correlations ranging from 0.29 to 0.55. All ESI-BF subfactors demonstrated robust associations, yet with different externalizing outcomes, lending tentative support to its criterion validity. Conclusion Despite remaining ambiguities regarding its structural fit, the ESI-BF may be promising for assessing externalizing psychopathology in forensic psychiatric populations. However, further investigation of the ESI-BF is needed before any firm conclusions can be drawn about its appropriateness in forensic psychiatric settings.

44. A structural model of the profilin–formin pacemaker system for actin filament elongation

Abstract: Abstract The formins constitute a large class of multi-domain polymerases that catalyze the localization and growth of unbranched actin filaments in cells from yeast to mammals. The conserved FH2 domains form dimers that bind actin at the barbed end of growing filaments and remain attached as new subunits are added. Profilin–actin is recruited and delivered to the barbed end by formin FH1 domains via the binding of profilin to interspersed tracts of poly-l-proline. We present a structural model showing that profilin–actin can bind the FH2 dimer at the barbed end stabilizing a state where profilin prevents its associated actin subunit from directly joining the barbed end. It is only with the dissociation of profilin from the polymerase that an actin subunit rotates and docks into its helical position, consistent with observations that under physiological conditions optimal elongation rates depend on the dissociation rate of profilin, independently of cellular concentrations of actin subunits.

45. Autism Spectrum Disorders in forensic psychiatric investigations–patterns of comorbidity and criminality

Abstract: BackgroundThere are contradictory research findings regarding whether individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are more or less likely to commit crimes. The aims of the current study were to: (1) Describe psychiatric and crime-related characteristics of a large group of offenders with ASD who had undergone a Forensic Psychiatric Investigation (FPI). (2) Identify clinical subgroups among this group of offenders. (3) Investigate associations between the identified clinical subgroups and (a) psychiatric comorbidity (b) types of crimes and (c) criminal responsibility.MethodsThe study cohort consists of all subjects (n = 831) who received an ASD-diagnosis at an FPI between 2002 and 2018 in Sweden. Descriptive and clinical, as well as crime related variables were obtained from the FPIs. Non-parametric (Pearson χ2, Fisher's exact and Mann-Whitney U-test) inferential statistics were used for analyses of between-group differences and effect sizes were reported. A Latent Class Analysis was used to identify homogeneous subgroups (or classes) from categorical characteristics.ResultsThe cohort consisted of 708 men and 123 women, aged 18 to 74 yrs. Two-thirds (66.7%) of the cohort had at least one other psychiatric diagnosis, the most prevalent was substance use disorder (SUD). A severe mental disorder, equivalent to lack of criminal responsibility, was most often reported among offenders with a comorbid diagnosis of schizophrenia spectrum disorder. The most common type of crime was violent crime. Three person-oriented clinical subgroups were identified; (1) ASD with few other diagnoses; (2) ASD and very high levels of SUDs, plus moderate levels of other externalizing disorders and psychotic psychopathology and (3) ASD and moderate to high levels of personality disorders (other than ASPD) and SUDs.ConclusionOur results highlight the importance of all parts of the CJS to be prepared to handle offenders with ASD, often with high levels of additional psychiatric problems. Traditional approaches in treatment or other psychosocial interventions for ASD may need to be adapted to at least three general clinical profiles– one with mainly neurodevelopmental problems, one with a spectrum of externalizing problems and one with complex personality related difficulties.

46. PhoneMD: Learning to Diagnose Parkinson's Disease from Smartphone Data

Abstract: Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease that can affect a person's movement, speech, dexterity, and cognition. Clinicians primarily diagnose Parkinson's disease by performing a clinical assessment of symptoms. However, misdiagnoses are common. One factor that contributes to misdiagnoses is that the symptoms of Parkinson's disease may not be prominent at the time the clinical assessment is performed. Here, we present a machine-learning approach towards distinguishing between people with and without Parkinson's disease using long-term data from smartphone-based walking, voice, tapping and memory tests. We demonstrate that our attentive deep-learning models achieve significant improvements in predictive performance over strong baselines (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.85) in data from a cohort of 1853 participants. We also show that our models identify meaningful features in the input data. Our results confirm that smartphone data collected over extended periods of time could in the future potentially be used as a digital biomarker for the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease., Comment: AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2019

47. Perfect Match: A Simple Method for Learning Representations For Counterfactual Inference With Neural Networks

Abstract: Learning representations for counterfactual inference from observational data is of high practical relevance for many domains, such as healthcare, public policy and economics. Counterfactual inference enables one to answer "What if...?" questions, such as "What would be the outcome if we gave this patient treatment $t_1$?". However, current methods for training neural networks for counterfactual inference on observational data are either overly complex, limited to settings with only two available treatments, or both. Here, we present Perfect Match (PM), a method for training neural networks for counterfactual inference that is easy to implement, compatible with any architecture, does not add computational complexity or hyperparameters, and extends to any number of treatments. PM is based on the idea of augmenting samples within a minibatch with their propensity-matched nearest neighbours. Our experiments demonstrate that PM outperforms a number of more complex state-of-the-art methods in inferring counterfactual outcomes across several benchmarks, particularly in settings with many treatments.

Abstract: The T2K experiment measures muon neutrino disappearance and electron neutrino appearance in accelerator-produced neutrino and antineutrino beams. With an exposure of $14.7(7.6)\times 10^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino (antineutrino) mode, 89 $\nu_e$ candidates and 7 anti-$\nu_e$ candidates were observed while 67.5 and 9.0 are expected for $\delta_{CP}=0$ and normal mass ordering. The obtained $2\sigma$ confidence interval for the $CP$ violating phase, $\delta_{CP}$, does not include the $CP$-conserving cases ($\delta_{CP}=0,\pi$). The best-fit values of other parameters are $\sin^2\theta_{23} = 0.526^{+0.032}_{-0.036}$ and $\Delta m^2_{32}=2.463^{+0.071}_{-0.070}\times10^{-3} \mathrm{eV}^2/c^4$., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: This paper reports measurements of final-state proton multiplicity, muon and proton kinematics, and their correlations in charged-current pionless neutrino interactions, measured by the T2K ND280 near detector in its plastic scintillator (C$_8$H$_8$) target. The data were taken between years 2010 and 2013, corresponding to approximately 6$\times10^{20}$ protons on target. Thanks to their exploration of the proton kinematics and of kinematic imbalances between the proton and muon kinematics, the results offer a novel probe of the nuclear-medium effects most pertinent to the (sub-)GeV neutrino-nucleus interactions that are used in accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino oscillation measurements. These results are compared to many neutrino-nucleus interaction models which all fail to describe at least part of the observed phase space. In case of events without a proton above a detection threshold in the final state, a fully consistent implementation of the local Fermi gas model with multinucleon interactions gives the best description of the data. In the case of at least one proton in the final state the spectral function model agrees well with the data, most notably when measuring the kinematic imbalance between the muon and the proton in the plane transverse to the incoming neutrino. A clear indication of existence of multinucleon interactions is observed. 50. Not to Cry Wolf: Distantly Supervised Multitask Learning in Critical Care

Abstract: Patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) require constant and close supervision. To assist clinical staff in this task, hospitals use monitoring systems that trigger audiovisual alarms if their algorithms indicate that a patient's condition may be worsening. However, current monitoring systems are extremely sensitive to movement artefacts and technical errors. As a result, they typically trigger hundreds to thousands of false alarms per patient per day - drowning the important alarms in noise and adding to the exhaustion of clinical staff. In this setting, data is abundantly available, but obtaining trustworthy annotations by experts is laborious and expensive. We frame the problem of false alarm reduction from multivariate time series as a machine-learning task and address it with a novel multitask network architecture that utilises distant supervision through multiple related auxiliary tasks in order to reduce the number of expensive labels required for training. We show that our approach leads to significant improvements over several state-of-the-art baselines on real-world ICU data and provide new insights on the importance of task selection and architectural choices in distantly supervised multitask learning.
