ZnS and ZnMgS layers have been grown onto GaP substrates by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The key parameters of the growth are a high substrate temperature and a high sulfur (S) beam pressure. The S beam pressure was typically 1×10[sup -2] Pa, which was more than one order of magnitude larger than in conventional MBE of ZnS. Using the high S beam pressure, large ZnS growth rate of 0.3–1.0 μm/h could be obtained even at 490 °C. The growth rate was limited by the Zn supply. Optimization of the S beam pressure reduces the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the (400) double-crystal x-ray rocking curve (DCXRC). For a 2.1-μm-thick ZnS layer the width can be reduced to 400 arcsec. The low temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra show sharp excitonic emissions including the free exciton emission. ZnMgS layers were grown onto ZnS buffer layers. The ZnMgS layers as well show good crystal and optical qualities. The FWHM of DCXRC of the 1.5-μm-thick Zn[sub 0.83]Mg[sub 0.17]S layer is 650 arcsec, which is comparable to the FWHM of a ZnS layer of similar thickness. The low temperature PL of the ZnMgS layer is dominated by a strong excitonic emission. The band gap of Zn[sub 1-x]Mg[sub x]S is estimated from reflection spectra. Purpose: To determine the usefulness of a new platinum microcoil, the Berenstein Liquid Coil for vascular embolization.Methods: Nine patients underwent transcatheter arterial embolization with liquid coils. The occluded vessels included the splenic artery in four patients, gastroduodenal artery in two, arteriovenous malformation or fistula in two, and middle hepatic artery in one. All coils were delivered with a saline flush through a Tracker-18 catheter.Results: All arteries except one were successfully occluded in a one-stage procedure using liquid coils. No friction was observed between the liquid coils and the microcatheter regardless of the tortuosity of the artery. Platelet counts in all patients had increased after splenic embolization. In two patients with liver tumors, perfusion to the inappropriate area during intraarterial chemotherapy was prevented by selective embolization. Life-threatening bleeding was successfully treated by gastroduodenal artery occlusion. No complications were encountered.Conclusion: The Berenstein Liquid Coil provides easy, safe, and rapid vascular occlusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Leptin receptor-positive (LepR + ) periodontal ligament (PDL) cells play a crucial role in osteogenesis during tooth socket healing and orthodontic tooth movement; however, the factors regulating osteoblast differentiation remain unclear. This study aimed to demonstrate the function of low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1 (LRP1) in alveolar bone formation by examining conditional knockout (cKO) mice lacking LRP1 in LepR + cells., Design: Bone mass and formation were examined via bone morphometric analysis. Bone formation and resorption activities were determined via histochemical staining. Additionally, PDL cells collected from molars were induced to differentiate into osteoblasts with the addition of BMP2 and to mineralize with the addition of osteogenic medium. Osteoblast differentiation of PDL cells was examined by measuring the expression of osteoblast markers., Results: Bone morphometry analysis revealed decreased mineral apposition rate and alveolar bone mass in cKO mice. Additionally, cKO mice showed a decreased number of osterix-positive cells in the PDL. cKO mice had a large number of osteoclasts around the alveolar bone near the root apex and mesial surface of the tooth. In the PDL cells from cKO mice, inhibition of mineralized matrix formation and decreased expression of alkaline phosphatase, osterix, bone sialoprotein, and osteocalcin were observed even when BMP2 was added to the medium. BMP2, BMP4, and osteoprotegerin expression also decreased, but RANKL expression increased dominantly., Conclusion: LRP1 in LepR + cells promotes bone formation by stimulating osteoblast differentiation. Ethnographic research with cognitively impaired older adults can be challenging, in part because cognitive impairment raises questions about the ability to provide informed consent. Relying on proxy consent is a commonly used strategy, but often excludes people with dementia who lack close kin (de Medeiros, Girling, & Berlinger, 2022). In this paper, we describe how we have analyzed existing research data from a well-established and ongoing prospective cohort study, the Adult Changes in Thought Study, along with unstructured text from the medical records of participants who had no living spouse or adult children when they developed dementia, as a way of studying the circumstances, life trajectories, caregiving resources, and care needs of this vulnerable and difficult-to-research group. In this article, we detail this methodology, exploring what can and cannot be gleaned from it, what the ethical implications may be, and how and whether this type of research can be considered ethnographic. In conclusion, we argue that collaborative interdisciplinary research using existing, longitudinal research data and text from medical records deserves to be considered as a potentially useful addition to the ethnographic toolkit. We anticipate that this is a methodology that could be applied more broadly, and paired with more traditional ethnographic methods, might be one way to make research with this population more inclusive., (Copyright © 2023. Objectives: To examine the circumstances and needs of older adults who were "kinless," defined as having no living spouse or children, when they developed dementia., Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of information from the Adult Changes in Thought study. Among 848 participants diagnosed with dementia between 1994 and 2016, we identified 64 who had no living spouse or child at dementia onset. We then conducted a qualitative analysis of administrative documents pertaining to these participants: handwritten comments recorded after each study visit, and medical history documents containing clinical chart notes from participants' medical records., Results: In this community-dwelling cohort of older adults diagnosed with dementia, 8.4% were kinless at dementia onset. Participants in this sample had an average age of 87 years old, half lived alone, and one third lived with unrelated persons. Through inductive content analysis, we identified 4 themes that describe their circumstances and needs: (1) life trajectories, (2) caregiving resources, (3) care needs and gaps, and (4) turning points in caregiving arrangements., Discussion: Our qualitative analysis reveals that the life trajectories that led members of the analytic cohort to be kinless at dementia onset were quite varied. This research highlights the importance of nonfamily caregivers and participants' own roles as caregivers. Our findings suggest that clinicians and health systems may need to work with other parties to directly provide dementia caregiving support rather than rely on family, and address factors such as neighborhood affordability that particularly affect older adults who have limited family support., (© The Author(s) 2023. Aims: Impairment in activities of daily living (ADL) is an independent predictor of poor prognosis in older patients. Nevertheless, the effects of instrumental ADL (IADL) frequency on prognosis in older patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) are unclear. We investigate the associations between IADL frequency and all-cause mortality and hospital readmission due to cardiovascular events in older patients with CVD., Methods and Results: A total of 638 consecutive outpatients ≥65 years old with CVD were enrolled. A questionnaire, including Frenchay Activities Index (FAI) parameters, was used to determine IADL frequency at the start of the study as the baseline observation. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality, and the secondary endpoint was readmission for cardiovascular events. We examined the relationship between IADL frequency and each endpoint. Among the 632 patients evaluated {median age 74.0 [interquartile range (IQR) 70.0-78.0] years; 439 males}, there were 39 deaths and 105 cardiovascular events during the median follow-up period of 4.0 (IQR, 2.3-4.0) years. After adjusting for clinical confounding factors, the hazard ratios for all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events in the FAI points were 0.957 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.920-0.996] and 0.973 (95% CI, 0.950-0.997), respectively., Conclusion: A higher IADL frequency was independently associated with better outcomes in older patients with CVD, suggesting that the preservation of instrumental activities should be focused on as the components of cardiovascular rehabilitation., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: None declared., (© The Author(s) 2022. Although instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) are included in the outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation (CR), the relationship between IADL frequency at the end of CR and outcomes between the sexes remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the differences in frequency of IADL between the sexes and its impact on the outcomes. We retrospectively investigated 490 consecutive patients who were admitted for heart failure (HF) and participated in CR post-discharge. IADL frequency was assessed using the questionnaire-based Frenchay Activities Index (FAI). The primary endpoint was all-cause death, and the secondary endpoint was a composite of all-cause death and readmission due to HF. The cut-off values of the FAI for all-cause death in the overall cohort, females, and males were 23, 22, and 23 points, respectively. After adjusting for several factors, IADL assessed using the FAI was independently associated with all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.961, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.937-0.986) and combined events (HR: 0.968, 95% CI: 0.952-0.985), respectively. Additionally, there was no interaction between sex and all-cause mortality. In conclusion, higher IADL frequency after CR was associated with favourable outcomes in patients with HF.
