Abstract

Reducing particulate emissions from diesel engines pose a significant challenge in developing countries due to increasingly stringent regulations for both new and older vehicles. While employing wall-flow filters have proven effective for new vehicles, older vehicles necessitate alternative approaches to particulate filtration without complex modifications. Partial flow filters exhibit advantages in such scenarios, characterized by their lack of external components, simplified design, minimal maintenance demands, and resilience to misfuelling. The present study mainly focuses on the evaluation of a partial flow diesel particulate filter (P-DPF) installed on a diesel direct injection compression ignition engine, operating on commercial biodiesel blends, specifically B10 and B20. According to the combustion analyses, the combustion pressure, temperature, and the heat release rate increased with the kinetic energy inside the residual gas molecules due to installation of the P-DPF system. This also resulted in higher indicated power as well as indicated thermal efficiency. However, brake-specific fuel consumption and brake-specific energy consumption, exhibited only a marginal increase, while brake thermal efficiency experienced a slight decrease of 0.65% in the case of B10 and 0.74% for B20 after the installation of the P-DPF system due to the friction loss by the filter backpressure. Furthermore, an incremental increase in exhaust backpressure was observed, ranging from 0.2 kPa at 1000 rpm and 56 Nm to 2.25 kPa at 2000 rpm and 140 Nm. An analysis of emissions limits showed a notable 65% reduction in soot emissions. Comparative analyses were conducted to assess the impact of P-DPF installation on a diesel engine without any manual changes. Ultimately, the partial flow filter (P-DPF) emerges as an effective initial measure in mitigating particulate matter emissions, particularly when employed in a retrofit exhaust after-treatment system. Abstract

Soot and NOx emissions are the inherent combustion characteristics of diesel engines. The modification of fuel property makes for an interesting study of methods for elimination of soot and NOx emissions. HVO and blends of 20 %, 50 %, 80 % by mass of HVO with commercial diesel fuel (mixed 7 % FAME), in combination with various EGR conditions were carried out to evaluate soot and NOx formation, as well as combustion characteristics of HVO blends in RCEM. The obtained results revealed that ignition delay, flame temperature, NOx and soot concentration decreased as HVO percentage increased. Mixing ratios of HVO with diesel showed a similar flame profile at baseline condition, higher flame temperature and darker soot density-KL regions were distributed on the upstream of spray flame. HVO displayed a slightly lower in-flame temperature and KL density, which led to a decrease of 33 % and 15.9 % of NOx and soot concentration, respectively, compared to diesel. By applying higher EGR levels, a reduction of heat release rate, flame temperature and NOx emissions were recorded. Also observed was an increase in ignition delay and soot concentration. Notably, soot at 10 % O2 concentration was lower than that of 15 % O2 concentration.

45. Influence of V2O5and AlF3on Microstructure of Acicular Mullite Diesel Particulate Filter Along with Soot Oxidation Kinetics

Abstract

In current research, aluminium oxide and silicon dioxide are used as raw materials for fabricating main structures of mullite diesel particulate filters. The variable substances applied to develop acicular mullite structure are titanium dioxide, aluminium fluoride, and vanadium oxide. Carbon black was used to create pores in mullite diesel particulate filters with 35 to 45% porosity based on the sintering temperature of 1300°C. The images of the filter’s porous surface microstructure were investigated using scanning electron microscopy. Vanadium oxide and aluminium fluoride play important roles in growth of acicular shape and acicular size for membrane, respectively. Acicular size of membrane varies from a hundred nano-meters to the submicron in needle diameter. The relation of all factors between pore size, porosity, surface roughness, and pin-shape microstructure can be controlled by additional amounts of additives. From Raman spectroscopy analysis, the soot formation of carbon black’s micro and nanostructure are acceptable to simulate diesel soot particles. In line with these results, carbon black was successfully used as a substitute of real engine soot in soot kinetics reactivity. In addition, the oxidation kinetics of soot particles on mullite and acicular mullite membrane were investigated by using tight contact in isothermal and loose contact in non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis. The calculated apparent activation energies of soot oxidation with isothermal technique on mullite and acicular mullite membrane are approximately 213 and 141 kJ/mol while those values calculated with non-isothermal technique are 118 and 76 kJ/mol, respectively.
