International audience; This paper considers the stabilization of a rolling balance board by means of the multiplicity-induceddominancy property. A two degree-of-freedom mechanical model of a human balancing on a rolling balance board is analyzed in the sagittal plane. The human body is modeled by an inverted pendulum which connects to the balance board through the ankle joint. The system is stabilized by the ankle torque managed by the central nervous system (CNS). The action of the CNS is modeled by a delayed full state feedback: a pointwise delay stands for all latencies in the neuromechanical system (reaction time, neuromechanical lag, etc.). The aim of the paper is to achieve a good occurrence in terms of the decay rate, it shows the links with dominancy and with the exponential stability property of the solution.

Kinematic variables designed for pairwise decays to partly undetected final states -- a prominent example being $M_{T2}$ and its Lorentz-invariant version $M_2$ -- have been extensively deployed in high-$p_T$ collider searches. A new range of potential applications at flavour facilities -- where $B$ mesons or $\tau$ leptons are also pairwise produced -- was recently proposed. One general challenge in these decays arises if both the signal parent and the 'other' parent, often used as a tag, decay semi-invisibly. In such cases, which notably include semi-leptonic tags, signal identification is generally hindered by the ensuing lack of knowledge of the signal-parent boost. $M_2$ helps precisely to overcome this challenge, and allows to leverage the otherwise superior efficiency of semi-leptonic decays. Our strategy rests on two novel constraints that can be imposed on $M_2$. The first is that of the known mass of the decaying-parent mass squared which, in connection with other constraints, gives rise to $M_{2sB}$. The second is on the flight direction of the signal parent, often well reconstructed at facilities with high vertexing capabilities such as Belle II and LHCb. This constraint gives rise to the $M_{2V}$ variable, that can be used even at facilities where the collision energy is not known. We test these ideas in a decay of great current interest in the context of the persistent discrepancies in $B$ decays, namely $B \to K \tau \mu$. We find that a bare-bones application of $M_{2sB}$ leads, alone, to an improvement that is already halfway between the current approach and the "truth-level" semi-leptonic case. Ceteris paribus -- in particular statistics -- our approach thus makes semi-leptonic tags competitive with fully reconstructed hadronic tags., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

The angle $\gamma$ of the Cabibbo--Kobayashi--Maskawa unitarity triangle is a benchmark parameter of the Standard Model of particle physics. A method to determine $\gamma$ from $B^{\pm} \to D K^{\pm}$ with subsequent $D \to K_{\rm S}^0\pi^+\pi^-$ or similar multibody decays has been proven to provide good sensitivity. We review the first discussions on the use of this technique, and its impact subsequently. We propose that this approach should be referred to as the BPGGSZ method.

The mixing of neutral mesons is sensitive to some of the highest scales probed in laboratory experiments. In light of the planned LHCb Upgrade II, a possible upgrade of Belle II, and the broad interest in flavor physics in the tera-Z phase of the proposed FCC-ee program, we study constraints on new physics contributions to Bd and Bs mixings which can be obtained in these benchmark scenarios. We explore the limitations of this program, and identify the measurement of |Vcb| as one of the key ingredients in which progress beyond current expectations is necessary to maximize future sensitivity. We speculate on possible solutions to this bottleneck. Given the current tension with the standard model (SM) in semileptonic B decays, we explore how its resolution may impact the search for new physics in mixing. Even if new physics has the same Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa and loop suppressions of flavor changing processes as the SM, the sensitivity will reach 2 TeV, and it can be much higher if any SM suppressions are lifted. We illustrate the discovery potential of this program.

International audience; This work revisits recent results on maximal multiplicity induced-dominancy for spectral values in reduced-order time-delay Systems and extends it to the general class of second-order retarded differential equations. A parametric multiplicity-induced-dominancy property is characterized, allowing to a delayed stabilizing design with reduced complexity. As a matter of fact, the approach is merely a delayed-output-feedback where the candidates' delays and gains result from the manifold defining the maximal multiplicity of a real spectral value, then, the dominancy is shown using the argument principle. Sensitivity of the control design with respect to the parameters uncertainties/variation is discussed.

International audience; In this paper we introduce a novel certified shape optimization strategy-named Certified Descent Algorithm (CDA)-to account for the numerical error introduced by the Finite Element approximation of the shape gradient. We present a goal-oriented procedure to derive a certified upper bound of the error in the shape gradient and we construct a fully-computable, constant-free a posteriori error estimator inspired by the complementary energy principle. The resulting CDA is able to identify a genuine descent direction at each iteration and features a reliable stopping criterion.

This divergence, which is found also among many leaders, affects the subject of intercultural management. It leads to seek to minimize cultural differences or to integrate cultural systems of partner companies. These two approaches generating various managerial processes, our work aims to analyze their complementarity. In this perspective, we conducted sixteen semi-structured interviews with french and tunisian managers operating in eight stable franco-tunisian asymmetric alliances. Our results show that bimodal intercultural management, based on the exploitation of the benefits of cultural diversity and inhibition of its disadvantages, is a source of sustainability of cooperation., Mientras algunos investigadores consideran la interculturalidad como un freno a la sostenibilidad de las alianzas estratégicas internacionales, otros lo ven como un factor de longevidad de estas relaciones.

International audience; Biological membranes are often idealized as incompressible elastic surfaces whose strain energy only depends on their mean curvature and pos-sibly on their shear. We show that this type of model can be derived using a formal asymptotic method by considering biological membranes to be thin, strongly anisotropic, elastic, locally homogeneous bodies.

The first observation of the decays Λ0b→χc1pK− and Λ0b→χc2pK− is reported using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1, collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. The following ratios of branching fractions are measured B(Λ0b→χc1pK−)B(Λ0b→J/ψpK−)=0.242±0.014±0.013±0.009,B(Λ0b→χc2pK−)B(Λ0b→J/ψpK−)=0.248±0.020±0.014±0.009,B(Λ0b→χc2pK−)B(Λ0b→χc1pK−)=1.02±0.10±0.02±0.05, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to the uncertainty on the branching fractions of the χc1→J/ψγ and χc2→J/ψγ decays. Using both decay modes, the mass of the \Lb baryon is also measured to be mΛ0b=5619.44±0.28±0.26 MeV/c2, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

- Abstract

A search for the rare decays B0s→μ+μ− and B0→μ+μ− is performed at the LHCb experiment using data collected in pp collisions corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 4.4 fb−1. An excess of B0s→μ+μ− decays is observed with a significance of 7.8 standard deviations, representing the first observation of this decay in a single experiment. The branching fraction is measured to be B(B0s→μ+μ−)=(3.0±0.6+0.3−0.2)×10−9, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The first measurement of the B0s→μ+μ− effective lifetime, τ(B0s→μ+μ−)=2.04±0.44±0.05 ps, is reported. No significant excess of B0→μ+μ− decays is found and a 95 % confidence level upper limit, B(B0→μ+μ−)

A study of B+c→K+K−π+ decays is performed for the first time using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb−1 collected by the LHCb experiment in pp collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. Evidence for the decay B+c→χc0(→K+K−)π+ is reported with a significance of 4.0 standard deviations, resulting in the measurement of σ(B+c)σ(B+)×B(B+c→χc0π+) to be (9.8+3.4−3.0(stat)±0.8(syst))×10−6. Here B denotes a branching fraction while σ(B+c) and σ(B+) are the production cross-sections for B+c and B+ mesons. An indication of b¯c weak annihilation is found for the region m(K−π+)

The decays $ \Lambda_b^0 \to \psi(2S)pK^-$ and $ \Lambda_b^0 \to J/\psi \pi^+ \pi^- pK^-$ are observed in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb$^{-1}$, collected in proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8TeV centre-of-mass energies by the LHCb detector. The $\psi(2S)$ mesons are reconstructed through the decay modes $\psi(2S)\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $\psi(2S)\to J/\psi\pi^+\pi^-$. The branching fractions relative to that of $ \Lambda_b^0 \to J/\psi pK^-$ are measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_b^0 \to \psi(2S) pK^-)} {\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_b^0 \to J/\psi pK^-)} & = & (20.70\pm 0.76\pm 0.46\pm 0.37)\times10^{-2} \,, \frac{\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_b^0 \to J/\psi \pi^+ \pi^- pK^-)} {\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_b^0 \to J/\psi pK^-)} & = & (20.86\pm 0.96\pm 1.34)\times10^{-2} \,, \end{eqnarray*} where the first uncertainties are statistical, the second are systematic and the third is related to the knowledge of $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ branching fractions. The mass of the $\Lambda_b^0$ baryon is measured to be $$ M(\Lambda_b^0) = 5619.65 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.17\mathrm{MeV}/c^2,$$ where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic.

- Abstract

We propose an alternative to the classical post-treatment of the homogenization method for shape optimization. Rather than penalize the material density once the optimal composite shape is obtained (by the homogenization method) in order to produce a workable shape close to the optimal one, we macroscopically project the microstructure of the former through an appropriate procedure that roughly consists in laying the material along the directions of lamination of the composite. We have tested our approach in the framework of compliance minimization in two-dimensional elasticity. Numerical results are provided.

- Abstract

Using pp collision data collected by LHCb at center-of-mass energies s=7TeV and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb-1, the ratio of the branching fraction of the Bc+→ψ(2S)π+ decay relative to that of the Bc+→J/ψπ+ decay is measured to be 0.268±0.032(stat)±0.007(syst)±0.006(BF). The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainties on the branching fractions of the J/ψ→μ+μ- and ψ(2S)→μ+μ- decays. This measurement is consistent with the previous LHCb result, and the statistical uncertainty is halved.

In this paper we account for the numerical error introduced by the Finite Element approximation of the shape gradient to construct a guaranteed shape optimization method. We present a goal-oriented strategy inspired by the complementary energy principle to construct a constant-free, fully-computable a posteriori error estimator and to derive a certified upper bound of the error in the shape gradient. The resulting Adaptive Boundary Variation Algorithm (ABVA) is able to identify a genuine descent direction at each iteration and features a reliable stopping criterion for the optimization loop. Some preliminary numerical results for the inverse identification problem of Electrical Impedance Tomography are presented.

This paper is a sequel to Part I (Trabelsi [11]) in which a new two-dimensional membrane model was derived via a formal asymptotic procedure for a family of hyperelastic nonlinear materials proposed by Ciarlet and Geymonat whose stored energy function is polyconvex and becomes infinite when the determinant of the deformation gradient tends to zero, and can be adjusted to arbitrary Lamé constants. Here, we continue the asymptotic analysis by making legitimate assumptions on the data to produce an inextensional two-dimensional model.

Nonlinear two-dimensional thin plate models are derived via a formal asymptotic procedure due to Pantz, for a family of Ogden materials proposed by Ciarlet and Geymonat (C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. II 295 (4) (1982) 423–426). These materials are more realistic than the Saint Venant–Kirchhoff material. As a consequence, the derived models generalize those obtained for this material. The classical equations of a nonlinearly elastic membrane plate, made of Saint Venant–Kirchhoff material, have been justified by Fox et al. (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 124 (2) (1993) 157–199). We show that, under compression, the associated minimization problem admits no solution. The proof is based on a result of non-existence of minimizers of non-convex functionals due to Dacorogna and Marcellini (Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 131 (4) (1995) 359–399). We generalize the application of their result from plane elasticity to membrane plates. To cite this article: K. Trabelsi, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 337 (2003).

In most shape optimization problems, the optimal solution does not belong to the set of genuine shapes but is a composite structure. The homogenization method consists in relaxing the original problem thereby extending the set of admissible structures to composite shapes. From the numerical viewpoint, an important asset of the homogenization method with respect to traditional geometrical optimization is that the computed optimal shape is quite independent from the initial guess (at least for the compliance minimization problem). Nevertheless, the optimal shape being a composite, a post-treatement is needed in order to produce an almost optimal non-composite (i.e. workable) shape. The classical approach consists in penalizing the intermediate densities of material, but the obtained result deeply depends on the underlying mesh used and the level of details is not controllable. In a previous work, we proposed a new post-treatement method for the compliance minimization problem of an elastic structure. The main idea is to approximate the optimal composite shape with a locally periodic composite and to build a sequence of genuine shapes converging toward this composite structure. This method allows us to balance the level of details of the final shape and its optimality. Nevertheless, it was restricted to particular optimal shapes, depending on the topological structure of the lattice describing the arrangement of the holes of the composite. In this article, we lift this restriction in order to extend our method to any optimal composite structure for the compliance minimization problem.

Within the Tsallis thermodynamics' framework, and using scaling properties of the entropy, we derive a generalization of the Gibbs-Duhem equation. The analysis suggests a transformation of variables that allows standard thermodynamics to be recovered. Moreover, we also generalize Einstein's formula for the probability of a fluctuation to occur by means of the maximum statistical entropy method. The use of the proposed transformation of variables also shows that fluctuations within Tsallis statistics can be mapped to those of standard statistical mechanics., Comment: 4 pages, no figures, revised version, new title, accepted in PRL
