Anaerobic digestion produces renewable energy and recycled fertilisers, and thereby may improve energy and nutrient self-sufficiency and decrease greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from energy production, agriculture and waste management. Finland aims to increase bioenergy production and nutrient recycling from agricultural biomass, via digestion of non-food crops and side streams from food production. According to the national climate and energy strategy, the life cycle carbon balance of bioenergy must be accounted for to ensure its sustainability. However, all emissions and abatement potential are often allocated only for energy and not for digestate production and use. This emphasises climate impacts for energy, and fails to consider digestate-related emissions and credits. This study used different allocation methods to assess the climate emissions of the entire anaerobic digestion chain from feedstock procurement to both energy and digestate use in comparison to fossil energy and mineral fertiliser. Three feedstock scenarios with pig slurry and different co-feedstocks (separated solid fraction of slurry or grass from uncultivated fields or food industry side streams) were assessed. The climate emissions of energy were decreasing and the climate emissions of digestate were increasing when allocating all emissions from anaerobic digestion to energy and moving towards using economic allocation method and finally mass allocation method. With all allocation methods the three scenarios with different co-feedstocks led to lower climate emissions compared to the production of fossil fuels and mineral fertilisers. The climate emissions of anaerobic digestion were highest for the scenario that made use of grass as co-feedstock and lowest with food industry side streams as co-feedstock. The largest climate emissions of anaerobic digestion were from combined heat and power plant, and manure storage. When looking further the digestate storage, transportation and utilization as fertiliser on field the emissions were higher compared to mineral fertiliser utilization on field. However, when combining emissions of anaerobic digestion allocated for digestate and emissions of the digestate utilization on field, they were lower compared to mineral fertiliser production and use on field. The largest climate emissions of digestate were from digestate field use.

The aim of this article was to create key indicators for measuring the implementation potential of the green economy transition at a local level in a northernmost, natural biomass-rich environment. The case area to test the set of indicators was the village of Saija in Lapland. The work presented in this article is based on a communicative cooperative research and development project. The selection process for the appropriate indicators is based on a conceptual framework for developing local sustainability indicators and the thematic framework follows the key dimensions of the green economy (ecosystem resilience, resource efficiency and social equity). When selecting the local-level indicators, a strong emphasis was placed on the special characteristics of the local area and the availability and validity of the data. Layman villagers and data policy relevance (in this case green economy) were also taken into consideration. The key indicators developed as a result included: the increment of growing forest stock in relation to the drain on growing forest stock, the village population, the bioenergy consumption share, the utilization share of side streams, the bioenergy production potential, capital outflow, demographic dependency ratio, the ratio between employed and working age residents and the number of forest owners in relation to area households. The key indicators are targeted for use in supporting local decision-making and monitoring and assessing development activities and their effectiveness in the process of the green economy transition. The indicators measure the most critical factors for green economy transition in a local area and identify the most optimal development opportunities when moving towards green growth. In the measurement of the transition potential of the green economy, it was found that the case area&rsquo, s imported fossil energy consumption could be substituted with self-sufficient bioenergy production utilizing the area&rsquo, s own raw materials. There is extensive potential for the utilization of manure (an agricultural side stream) and forest resources (forestry side streams) at the local level, especially since forests account for 98% of Lapland&rsquo, s land area. In support of the change from fossil-based energy consumption towards bioenergy production, plans for a biogas plant were examined for self-sufficient bioenergy production and this appeared to be the initial key process in the path of the green economy transformation in the case village of Saija.

Increasing demand of fossil-free fuels in the transport sector drives towards using new biomass sources in fuel production. Municipal waste as a substrate is used in many countries in biomethane production, but the amount of waste can cover only a small portion of the fuel used. In Europe, the new renewable energy directive (RED II) was established December 2018 to ensure the sustainability of renewable fuels. The directive includes typical and default greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for several potential substrates, such as biogas from manure or maize silage, which the biogas plants can use to verify their emissions directly or to calculate their emissions using the methods provided. However, such default value for grass silage as biogas substrate is lacking. We defined the conditions needed to fulfil the sustainability criteria of the directive when producing biomethane for vehicle fuel using grass silage as the feedstock in Finland. The emission reduction targets are not easy to achieve in Finland when using grass cultivated exclusively for energy production. The reduction targets can be achieved, however, if the grass is cultivated due to an improved crop rotation, where the grass is co-digested with manure and/or energy sources with zero emissions for the process can be applied.

Kansallisen ilmasto- ja energiastrategian mukaisesti Suomi tulee lisäämään maatalouspohjaisen biomassan energiakäyttöä hyödyntäen erityisesti muita kuin ruuaksi käytettäviä kasveja ja kasvinosia, sekä elintarviketuotannon sivujakeita ja jätteitä (ml. lanta). Yksi hyödyntämiskeino on biokaasuteknologia, jossa yhdistyvät uusiutuvan energian tuotannon ohella ravinteiden kierrätys, biojätteiden käsittely, jätehuolto sekä päästöjen hallinta. Vaikka biomassan hyödyntäminen energiakäyttöön tuottaakin mahdollisia päästövähennyksiä, on haitallisten ilmastovaikutusten minimoimiseksi kuitenkin tärkeää huomioida koko käsittelyketju raaka-aineiden hankinnasta lopputuotteiden käyttöön. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tarkastella pääasiassa lantaa käsittelevien biokaasulaitoksien energia- ja ravinnetaseita sekä löytää ilmastonmuutoksen hillinnän näkökulmasta parhaat toimintatavat. Biokaasuketjut pyrittiin määrittelemään nykykäytäntöjä vastaaviksi perustuen aiempiin tutkimuksiin, kirjallisuustietoon sekä asiantuntija-arvioihin. Tarkasteltavaksi kokoluokaksi valittiin kapasiteetiltaan 19 500 tonnia vuodessa käsittelevä laitos mikä vastaa Suomen mittakaavassa usean kotieläintilan lantoja käsittelevää biokaasulaitosta, jonka syötemateriaali koostui sian lietelannasta (16 000 tonnia/vuosi) ja lisäsyötteestä (3 500 tonnia/vuosi). Lisäsyöte oli joko sian lietelannasta erotettua kuivajaetta, HVP-nurmea (hoidettu viljelemätön pelto) tai elintarviketeollisuuden sivutuotetta. Tarkastellut biokaasuketjut sisälsivät myös syötemateriaalien hankinnan ja lopputuotteiden, kuten sähkön ja lämmön, käytön sekä lannoitteena käytettävän käsittelyjäännöksen sellaisenaan tai separoituna neste- ja kuivajakeeksi. Tarkastelussa verrattiin kolmea eri syöteseosta käyttävää biokaasuketjua referenssitilanteeseen, jossa syötemateriaalit eivät päädy biokaasuprosessiin. Tarkastelussa havaittiin, että lisäsyötteen vaikutus käsittelyjäännöksen ominaisuuksiin oli vähäinen, koska lietelannan osuus oli syötteessä huomattavan suuri. Käsittelyjäännöksen separoinnissa typpi ja kalium päätyivät pääosin nestejakeeseen ja jopa 70 % fosforista puolestaan kiintoaineeseen. Kaikki kolme biokaasuketjua tuottivat energiaa yli oman tarpeen, senkin jälkeen, kun huomioitiin laitoksen oma kulutus sekä materiaalien kuljetus ja peltolevitys. Ilmastovaikutukset kaikissa tarkastelluissa biokaasuketjuissa olivat pienemmät verrattuna referenssitilanteeseen, sillä tuotetulla biokaasulla korvattiin fossiilisia polttoaineita ja saatiin siten päästöhyvityksiä. Jonkin verran hyvityksiä saatiin myös mineraalilannoitteiden korvaamisesta kierrätysravinteilla, mutta tämä ei ollut kovin suuri ja hyvitys koski myös referenssiketjuja. Suurimmat ilmastohyödyt saatiin biokaasuketjusta, jonka raaka-aineena käytettiin sian lietelantaa ja HVP-nurmea, sillä se tuotti eniten energiaa jolloin korvaushyöty vältetystä fossiilisesta energiasta (kivihiili) oli suurin. Korvattavan energiamuodon valinnalla onkin suuri merkitys ilmastovaikutustulokseen. Referenssitilanteessa suurin osa kasvihuonekaasupäästöistä aiheutui lannan varastoinnista ja peltokäytöstä kun taas biokaasuketjujen suurin päästölähde oli käsittelyjäännöksen peltokäyttö, sillä oletuksena oli, että lanta kuljetetaan tuoreeltaan biokaasulaitokselle suljettuihin säiliöihin, jolloin vältetään lannan varastoinnista aiheutuvat päästöt. Lannan ohella myös käsittelyjäännöksen varastoinnin päästöt minimoitiin varastoimalla jäännös suljetuissa säiliöissä.

This report concludes the research from the FUSIONS Work Package (WP) 1 “Reliable data and information sources, trends and assessment criteria” The aim of this report is to serve as documentation for the existing knowledge base with respect to the socioeconomic and environmental impact of food waste and to provide new information on how to proceed towards socio-economic and environmental assessment of the impacts of food waste. According to the FUSIONS definition the term food waste is referring to a fraction of food and inedible parts removed from the food supply chain going to recovery or disposal (incl. composting). The impact assessment covers the following topics: - impacts on health and nutrition of food waste - socio-economic impacts of food waste - social impacts from food redistribution organisations, such as food banks or social supermarkets - environmental impacts of food waste A baseline assessment was carried out to receive estimates for current food waste in EU, to identify data gaps and to draw recommendations. The findings shall serve as a basis for further research.
