Reconfigurable intelligent metasurfaces have been proposed as an efficient solution for improving wireless telecommunication systems in multiple scattering or reverberating media. Concurrently, topology optimization has been successfully employed as an inverse design technique in many fields, and particularly in electromagnetics. In this work, we apply a gradient-based topology optimization for tuning the binary elements of a metasurface for a focusing goal in a complex environment. First, the metasurface unit-cells are approximated as point sources and, then, the optimization problem is formulated. Afterwards, the proposed method is applied to find the optimal parameter sets on three distinct environments of an ascending complexity and the resulting focus for each case is demonstrated via simulations. Metasurfaces with bound states in the continuum (BICs) have proven to be a powerful platform for drastically enhancing light-matter interactions, improving biosensing, and precisely manipulating near- and far-fields. However, engineering metasurfaces to provide an on-demand spectral and angular position for a BIC remains a prime challenge. A conventional solution involves a fine adjustment of geometrical parameters, requiring multiple time-consuming calculations. In this work, to circumvent such tedious processes, we develop a physics-inspired, inverse design method on all-dielectric metasurfaces for an on-demand spectral and angular position of a BIC. Our suggested method predicts the core-shell particles that constitute the unit cell of the metasurface, while considering practical limitations on geometry and available materials. Our method is based on a smart combination of a semi-analytical solution, for predicting the required dipolar Mie coefficients of the meta-atom, and a machine learning algorithm, for finding a practical design of the meta-atom that provides these Mie coefficients. Although our approach is exemplified in designing a metasurface sustaining a BIC, it can, also, be applied to many more objective functions. We provide a theoretical description of light scattering by a spherical particle whose permittivity is modulated in time at twice the frequency of the incident light. Such a particle acts as a finite-sized photonic time crystal and, despite its sub-wavelength spatial extent, can host optical parametric amplification. Conditions of parametric Mie resonances in the sphere are derived. We show that time-modulated materials provide a route to tailor directional light amplification, qualitatively different from that in scatterers made from a gain media. We design two characteristic time-modulated spheres that simultaneously exhibit light amplification and desired radiation patterns, including those with zero backward and/or vanishing forward scattering. Exploring the interaction of light with time-varying media is an intellectual challenge that, in addition to fundamental aspects, provides a pathway to multiple promising applications. Time modulation constitutes here a fundamental handle to control light on entirely different grounds. That holds particularly for complex systems simultaneously structured in space and time. However, a realistic description of time-varying materials requires considering their material dispersion. The combination thereof has barely been considered but is crucial since dispersion accompanies materials suitable for dynamic modulation. As a canonical scattering problem from which many general insights can be obtained, we develop and apply a self-consistent analytical theory of light scattering by a sphere made from a time-varying material exemplarily assumed to have a Lorentzian dispersion. We discuss the eigensolutions of Maxwell's equations in the bulk and present a dedicated Mie theory. The proposed theory is verified with full-wave simulations. We disclose effects such as energy transfer from the time-modulation subsystem to the electromagnetic field, amplifying carefully structured incident fields. Since many phenomena can be studied on analytical grounds with our formalism, it will be indispensable when exploring electromagnetic phenomena in time-varying and spatially structured finite objects of other geometries., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

Optical metasurfaces consist of a 2D arrangement of scatterers, and they control the amplitude, phase, and polarization of an incidence field on demand. Optical metasurfaces are the cornerstone for a future generation of flat optical devices in a wide range of applications. The rapidly growing advances in nanofabrication have made the versatile design and analysis of these ultra-thin surfaces an ever-growing necessity. However, despite their importance, a comprehensive theory to describe the optical response of periodic metasurfaces in closed-form and analytical expressions has not been formulated, and prior attempts were frequently approximate. Here, we develop a theory that analytically links the properties of the scatterer, from which a periodic metasurface is made, to its optical response via the lattice coupling matrix. The scatterers are represented by their polarizability or T matrix, and our theory works for normal and oblique incidence. We provide explicit expressions for the optical response up to octupolar order in both spherical and Cartesian coordinates. Several examples demonstrate that our analytical tool constitutes a paradigm shift in designing and understanding optical metasurfaces. Novel fully-diffracting metagratings and particle-independent polarization filters are proposed, and novel insights into the response of Huygens' metasurfaces under oblique incidence are provided.
