2. Quantum Fluctuations of a Self-interacting Inflaton

Abstract

We present a method to analytically compute the quantum corrected two-point correlation function of a scalar field in leading order at each loop in a homogeneous, isotropic and spatially flat spacetime where the expansion rate is time dependent and express the quantum corrected power spectrum $\Delta^2(k)$ as a time derivative of the coincident correlation function evaluated at time $t_k$ of the first horizon crossing of a mode with comoving wave number $k$. To facilitate the method, we consider the simplest version of inflation driven by a massive, minimally coupled inflaton endowing a quartic self-interaction---with positive or negative self-coupling. We compute the quantum corrected two-point correlation function, power spectrum, spectral index $n(k)$ and the running of the spectral index $\alpha(k)$ for the inflaton fluctuations at one-loop order. Numerical estimates of the $n(k)$ and $\alpha(k)$ and the cosmological measurements are in agreement, within reasonable ranges of values for the physical parameters in the model., Comment: 50 pages, 4 figures

3. Quantum Effects of Mass on Scalar Field Correlations and Fluctuations during Inflation

Abstract

We consider an infrared truncated massive minimally coupled scalar field with a quartic self-interaction in the locally de Sitter background of an inflating universe. We compute the two-point correlation function of the scalar and the mean squared fluctuations (variance) of the field variation analytically, at tree, one- and two-loop order. The one-loop correlator at a fixed comoving separation asymptotes to zero in the massive case but grows, at late times, like $-\lambda\ln^2(a)$ in the massless limit, where $a$ is the cosmic scale factor. For a fixed physical distance, on the other hand, it grows, at late times, like $-\lambda\ln^3(a)$ in the massless limit. This growth is severely suppressed in the massive case. In fact, the one-loop correlator asymptotes effectively to zero for masses larger than half the expansion rate. We find out also that the tree-order variance of field variation decreases when quantum corrections are included. Hence, the actual effect that any local observer perceives in the field strength as fluctuations happen does not deviate from the average effect as much as the tree-order variance implies., Comment: 50 pages, 4 figures

Hand-held spirometers have emerged relatively recently and offer several advantages over conventional desktop systems. There remains, however, a need for reassurance of high-quality spirometry testing with next-generation portable spirometers that connect over Bluetooth® to smart device applications. In this study, we examine the accuracy and repeatability of lung function measurements of a novel hand-held ultrasonic spirometer, the Spirohome Clinic and compare its clinical performance to a reference device, the EasyOne Air.Methods: Benchtop validation of the spirometers was conducted using a lung simulator device according to ATS/ERS guidelines and the ISO 26782 standard waveforms. Subsequently, 48 volunteers (pediatric patients between 6 and 11 years of age and adolescent patients between 12 and 18 years of age) performed spirometry with both the Spirohome Clinic and the EasyOne Air spirometer during their clinic visits. Spirometric data including repeated FEV1, FVC, FEV6, FEF25-75, and PEF measurements were collected.Results: Both the Spirohome Clinic and the EasyOne Air successfully passed requirements for accuracy stated in relevant guidelines and standards for spirometry. The only statistically significant (p< 0.05) difference was for FVC measurement accuracy. Clinical comparisons revealed strong correlation between spirometers in the measurement of key pulmonary function parameters including FEV1 and FVC with a Pearson’s correlation coefficient of 0.99. Bland–Altman plots showed good agreement between mean differences of FEV1 and FVC with the majority measurements remaining between the limits of 95% agreement for both the entire patient cohort and also in age and gender subsets.Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that the Spirohome Clinic spirometer conforms to ATS/ERS performance requirements and validates the clinical comparability of its measurement accuracy and repeatability to the EasyOne Air. 6. Protective effect of magnesium preloading on cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity: which dose is more suitable?

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Cisplatin is a widely used and potent cytotoxic chemotherapy agent, but its nephrotoxicity is a significant limiting side effect. Various premedication approaches have been implemented to preserve renal function, including magnesium (Mg) preloading. However, the optimal Mg dosage is still unknown. Our study aimed to assess the protective effects of different Mg doses as premedication in cisplatin-based chemoradiotherapy for patients with local/locally advanced cervical and head-neck cancers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective, multicenter study involved premedication with saline infusion containing potassium chloride and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) for all patients before cisplatin treatment. Patients were divided into two groups: 12 mEq MgSO4 (lowdose Mg preload group, low-Mg) and 24 mEq MgSO4 (high-dose Mg preload group, high-Mg). Renal function was evaluated using serum creatinine (sCr, mg/dl) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR, ml/min). Acute kidney injury (AKI) was defined per the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) version 5.0. Renal outcomes and efficacy were compared between the groups. RESULTS: In the low-Mg group (n = 159), sCr levels were significantly higher compared to baseline, various weeks during treatment, and at the 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 12th months post-treatment (p < 0.001). In the high-Mg group (n = 128), no significant changes were observed during treatment and at 1st, 3rd, and 12th months post-treatment (p > 0.05). A significant reduction in mean sCr level from baseline to 6 months was noted in the high-Mg group (p < 0.001). eGFR values are generally correlated with sCr levels. AKI occurred in 21 (13.2%) and 22 (17.7%) patients in the low-Mg and high-Mg groups, respectively (p = 0.292). There was no difference in progression-free or overall survival between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: We clearly demonstrated that saline hydration with 24 mEql MgSO4 supplementation before cisplatin treatment has a better renal protective effect than 12 mEql Mg-SO4 without reducing efficacy, especially in patients with local/local advanced cervical and head-neck cancer receiving cisplatin with concurrent radiotherapy. 22. Prevalence and clinical features of pollen-food allergy syndrome in adults with seasonal allergic rhinitis.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS) is an IgE-mediated allergic reaction to certain foods due to prior sensitization to pollen allergens. The data about the prevalence of PFAS in adults in Turkey is not sufficiently reported. Our objective was to investigate the frequency and clinical features of PFAS in adult patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 222 patients with SAR were enrolled in our outpatient allergy clinic at Hacettepe University, during a ten-month period. A questionnaire was used to evaluate patients and to categorize those who experienced obvious allergy symptoms consistent with PFAS. Atopy was assessed by a standard skin prick test panel including common aeroallergen extracts. RESULTS: Among 222 patients with a diagnosis of SAR, 31 had patient reported PFAS (31/222, 14%). Among them, 23 (74.2%) were females, and their mean age was 32.29±9.24 years. The most common symptoms were isolated oropharyngeal symptoms (58.1%), followed by urticaria (51.6%) after culprit food ingestion. The most frequent culprit foods were eggplant, walnut, kiwi, peach, and melon. The predominant sensitizing aeroallergen was grass pollen. CONCLUSIONS: PFAS can be frequently observed in adults who are followed up for SAR. The most frequently involved foods are eggplant, walnut, kiwi, peach, and melon in Ankara Province. The symptoms of PFAS are usually localized in the oropharyngeal area and are self-limited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically disrupts health care around the globe. The impact of the pandemic on chronic urticaria (CU) and its management are largely unknown. Aim: To understand how CU patients are affected by the COVID-19 pandemic; how specialists alter CU patient management; and the course of CU in patients with COVID-19. Materials and Methods: Our cross-sectional, international, questionnaire-based, multicenter UCARE COVID-CU study assessed the impact of the pandemic on patient consultations, remote treatment, changes in medications, and clinical consequences. Results: The COVID-19 pandemic severely impairs CU patient care, with less than 50% of the weekly numbers of patients treated as compared to before the pandemic. Reduced patient referrals and clinic hours were the major reasons. Almost half of responding UCARE physicians were involved in COVID-19 patient care, which negatively impacted on the care of urticaria patients. The rate of face-to-face consultations decreased by 62%, from 90% to less than half, whereas the rate of remote consultations increased by more than 600%, from one in 10 to more than two thirds. Cyclosporine and systemic corticosteroids, but not antihistamines or omalizumab, are used less during the pandemic. The rate of face-to-face consultations decreased by 62%, from 90% to less than half, whereas the rate of remote consultations increased by more than 600%, from one in 10 to more than two thirds. Cyclosporine and systemic corticosteroids, but not antihistamines or omalizumab, are used less during the pandemic. CU does not affect the course of COVID-19, but COVID-19 results in CU exacerbation in one of three patients, with higher rates in patients with severe COVID-19. Conclusions: the COVID-19 pandemic brings major changes and challenges for CU patients and their physicians. Abstract

There are many studies on the zooplankton of Turkish lakes, many of which are about seasonal fluctuations, distribution and hydrological changes. In recent years many scientists focused their attention on the zooplankton of Turkish inland waters (Dumont and De Ridder, 1987; Segers et al., 1992). The family Lecanidae consists of one genus, Lecane Nitzsch, 1827 with about 200 species. This genus is the most common rotifer species inhabiting in various aquatic environments (Segers 1994, 1995, 2008). They are from Monogonont rotifers and are diagnosed by the retractile head, the structure of the foot and toes and by the trophy in the female (Segers, 1995). Lecanids have got a loricate body and the body is compressed dorso-ventrally. The dorso ventral plates are connected by a flexible membrane. The feet have got two primitive segments of which only the posterior is movable. Toes varied remarkably within individuals of the same species (Arora, 1965). Their bodies resemble each other which cause difficulties in identifying species (Segers et al., 1992).)

46. Effect of Sodium substitution on the thermoelectric properties of Bi2Sr2Co2Ox ceramics

Abstract

Resumen del póster presentado a la 14th European Conference on Thermoelectrics, celebrada en Lisboa (Portugal) del 20 al 30 de septiembre de 2016., Bi2Sr2-xNaxCo2Ox polycristalline ceramics with x=0.0, 0.025, 0.050, 0.075, 0.10, 0.125, and 0.15 have been prepared using the classical solid state technique. SEM micrographs have shown that all the Na has been incorporated into the Bi2Sr2Co2Ox structure. It has been found that Na decreases porosity and improves grain growth. The lowest amount of porosity is observed in the highest Na containing samples (x=0.15). The temperature dependence of electrical resistivity, as a function of Na content, shows two kind of behaviors. For samples up to x=0.05 a semiconducting-like behavior (dρ/dT0) at higher temperatures, has been found. For higher Na content, a slightly metallic-like behavior is observed. Moreover, when increasing Na content, a significant reduction on the resistivity values at room temperature is produced, in agreement with an increase of apparent density. On the other hand, Seebeck coefficient shows smaller variations than expected from the resistivity variations. Power Factor increases with Na content until 0.125, decreasing for further Na addition. These results indicate that small Na-substitution can be very useful in order to strongly reduce electrical resistivity and, as a consequence, raising the thermoelectric performances of these ceramic materials., This work is supported by Research Fund of Cukurova University, Adana, Turkey, under grant contracts no: FBA-2016-6626.

Electrical resistivity has been clearly modified by K doping, from a semiconducting-like behavior (dρ/dT0) for all the K substituted samples. Moreover, K significantly decreases the resistivity values until 0.0125K, slightly increasing for higher content. On the other hand, Seebeck coefficient also decreases with K substitution. Power Factor increases with K content until 0.075, decreasing for further K addition.
