Context. The explosive burning that drives nova eruptions results in unique nucleosynthesis that heavily over-produces certain isotopes relative to the solar abundance. However, novae are often ignored when considering the chemical evolution of our Galaxy due to their low ejecta masses. Aims. In this work, we use previously computed synthetic nova populations and the galactic chemical evolution code OMEGA+ to assess the impact that novae have on the evolution of stable elemental and isotopic abundances. Methods. We combine populations of novae computed using the binary population synthesis code binary_c with the galactic chemical evolution code OMEGA+ and detailed, white dwarf mass-dependent nova yields to model the nucleosynthetic contributions of novae to the evolution of the Milky Way. We consider three different nova yield profiles, each corresponding to a different set of nova yield calculations. Results. Despite novae from low-mass white dwarfs (WDs) dominating nova ejecta contributions, we find that novae occurring on massive WDs are still able to contribute significantly to many isotopes, particularly those with high mass numbers. We find that novae can produce up to 35% of the Galactic 13C and 15N mass by the time the model Galaxy reaches [Fe/H] = 0, and earlier in the evolution of the Galaxy (between [Fe/H] = -2 and -1) novae may have been the dominant source of 15N. Predictions for [13C/Fe], [15N/Fe], 12C/13C, and 14N/15N abundances ratios vary by up to 0.2 dex at [Fe/H] = 0 and by up to 0.7 dex in [15N/Fe] and 14N/15N between [Fe/H] = -2 and -1 (corresponding approximately to Galactic ages of 170 Myr and 1 Gyr in our model). The Galactic evolution of other stable isotopes (excluding Li) is not noticeably affected by including novae.

The "chromosome maps" (ChMs) of globular clusters (GCs) have revealed that these ancient structures are not homogeneous in metallicity in various ways, and in different natures. The Type II GCs generally display larger variations, sometimes coupled with slow neutron capture (s) element enrichment on the ChMs redder sequences, which has been interpreted as due to multiple generations of stars. On the other hand, most GCs have inhomogeneous first populations (1P) in the form of large ranges in the Delta(F275W,F814W) values, pointing towards a not fully mixed pristine molecular cloud. We analyse the chemical composition the GC 47 Tucanae, which shows both inhomogeneous 1P stars and, although not formally a Type II GC, hosts a small number of stars distributed on a red side of the main stream of ChM stars. Our results suggest that 1P stars are not homogeneous in the overall metallicity, with variations of the order of ~0.10 dex in all the chemical species. The anomalous stars distributed on a redder sequence of the ChM, are further enriched in metals, but without any evidence for a significant enrichment in the s elements. Our three second population stars located on the normal component of the map, have metallicities similar to those of the metal-richer 1P group, suggesting that this population formed from these stars. Although three stars is a too-small sample to draw strong conclusions, the low spread in metals of these objects might point towards a formation in a fully mixed medium, possibly after a cooling flow phase., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, 8 tables. Aluminium-26 is a radioactive isotope which can be synthesized within asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, primarily through hot bottom burning. Studies exploring $^{26}$Al production within AGB stars typically focus on single-stars; however, observations show that low- and intermediate-mass stars commonly exist in binaries. We use the binary population synthesis code binary_c to explore the impact of binary evolution on $^{26}$Al yields at solar metallicity both within individual AGB stars and a low/intermediate-mass stellar population. We find the key stellar structural condition achieving most $^{26}$Al overproduction is for stars to enter the thermally-pulsing AGB (TP-AGB) phase with small cores relative to their total masses, allowing those stars to spend abnormally long times on the TP-AGB compared to single-stars of identical mass. Our population with a binary fraction of 0.75 has an $^{26}$Al weighted population yield increase of $25\%$ compared to our population of only single-stars. Stellar-models calculated from the Mt Stromlo/Monash Stellar Structure Program, which we use to test our results from binary_c and closely examine the interior structure of the overproducing stars, support our binary_c results only when the stellar envelope gains mass after core-He depletion. Stars which gain mass before core-He depletion still overproduce $^{26}$Al, but to a lesser extent. This introduces some physical uncertainty into our conclusions as $55\%$ of our $^{26}$Al overproducing stars gain envelope mass through stellar wind accretion onto pre-AGB objects. We conduct a line-by-line differential analysis of a sample of 125 co-moving pairs of stars (dwarfs and subgiants near solar metallicity). We obtain high precision stellar parameters with average uncertainties in effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity of 16.5 K, 0.033 dex and 0.014 dex, respectively. We classify the co-moving pairs of stars into two groups, chemically homogeneous (conatal; |Delta[Fe/H]| $\le$ 0.04 dex) and inhomogeneous (non-conatal), and examine the fraction of chemically homogeneous pairs as a function of separation and effective temperature. The four main conclusions from this study are: (1) A spatial separation of \ds = 10$^6$ AU is an approximate boundary between homogeneous and inhomogeneous pairs of stars, and we restrict our conclusions to only consider the 91 pairs with \ds $\le$ 10$^6$ AU; (2) There is no trend between velocity separation and the fraction of chemically homogeneous pairs in the range \dv $\le$ 4 \kms; (3) We confirm that the fraction of chemically inhomogeneous pairs increases with increasing \teff\ and the trend matches a toy model of that expected from planet ingestion; (4) Atomic diffusion is not the main cause of the chemical inhomogeneity. A major outcome from this study is a sample of 56 bright co-moving pairs of stars with chemical abundance differences $\leq$ 0.02 dex (5\%) which is a level of chemical homogeneity comparable to that of the Hyades open cluster. The minimum initial mass required for a star to explode as an Fe core collapse supernova, typically denoted $M_\text{mas}$, is an important quantity in stellar evolution because it defines the border between intermediate mass and massive stellar evolutionary paths. The precise value of $M_\text{mas}$ carries implications for models of galactic chemical evolution and the calculation of star formation rates. Despite the fact that stars with super solar metallicities are commonplace within spiral and some giant elliptical galaxies, there are currently no studies of this mass threshold in super metal-rich models with $Z>0.05$. Here, we study the minimum mass necessary for a star to undergo an Fe core collapse supernova when its initial metal content falls in the range $2.5\times 10^{-3} \leq Z \leq 0.10$. Although an increase in initial $Z$ corresponds to an increase in the Fe ignition threshold for $Z \approx 1\times 10^{-3}$ to $Z\approx0.04$, we find that there is a steady reversal in trend that occurs for $Z > 0.05$. Our super metal-rich models thus undergo Fe core collapse at lower initial masses than those required at solar metallicity. Our results indicate that metallicity--dependent curves extending to $Z=0.10$ for the minimum Fe ignition mass should be utilised in galactic chemical evolution simulations to accurately model supernovae rates as a function of metallicity, particularly for simulations of metal-rich spiral and elliptical galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (August 2023)

Most heavy elements beyond the iron peak are synthesized via neutron capture processes. The nature of the astrophysical sites of neutron capture processes is still very unclear. In this work we explore the observational constraints of the chemical abundances of s-process and r-process elements on the sites of neutron-capture processes by applying Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models to the data from Gaia-ESO large spectroscopic stellar survey. For the r-process, the [Eu/Fe]-[Fe/H] distribution suggests a short delay time of the site that produces Eu. Other independent observations (e.g., NS-NS binaries), however, suggest a significant fraction of long delayed ($>1$Gyr) neutron star mergers (NSM). When assuming NSM as the only r-process sites, these two observational constraints are inconsistent at above 1$\sigma$ level. Including short delayed r-process sites like magneto-rotational supernova can resolve this inconsistency. For the s-process, we find a weak metallicity dependence of the [Ba/Y] ratio, which traces the s-process efficiency. Our GCE model with up-to-date yields of AGB stars qualitatively reproduces this metallicity dependence, but the model predicts a much higher [Ba/Y] ratio compared to the data. This mismatch suggests that the s-process efficiency of low mass AGB stars in the current AGB nucleosynthesis models could be overestimated., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Recent work on metal-intermediate globular clusters (GCs) with [Fe/H]=$-1.5$ and $-0.75$ has illustrated the theoretical behavior of multiple populations in photometric diagrams obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). These results are confirmed by observations of multiple populations among M-dwarfs of 47 Tucanae. Here, we explore the multiple populations in metal-poor GCs with [Fe/H]=$-$2.3. We take advantage of synthetic spectra and isochrones that account for the chemical composition of multiple populations to identify photometric diagrams that separate the distinct stellar populations of GCs. We derived high-precision photometry and proper motion for main-sequence stars in the metal-poor GC M 92 from JWST and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. We identified a first generation (1G) and two main groups of second-generation stars (2G$_{\rm A}$ and 2G$_{\rm B}$) and investigated their kinematics and chemical composition. We find isotropic motions with no differences among the distinct populations. The comparison between the observed colors of M 92 stars and the colors derived by synthetic spectra reveals that helium abundance of 2G$_{\rm A}$ and 2G$_{\rm B}$ stars are higher than that of the 1G by $\Delta Y \sim 0.01$ and $0.04$, respectively. The $m_{\rm F090W}$ vs. $m_{\rm F090W}-m_{\rm F277W}$ color-magnitude diagram shows that below the knee, MS stars exhibit a wide color broadening due to multiple populations. We constrain the amount of oxygen variation needed to reproduce the observed MS width, which is consistent with results on red-giant branch stars. The assembly history of the Milky Way (MW) is a rapidly evolving subject, with numerous small accretion events and at least one major merger proposed in the MW's history. Accreted alongside these dwarf galaxies are globular clusters (GCs), which act as spatially coherent remnants of these past events. Using high precision differential abundance measurements from our recently published study, we investigate the likelihood that the MW clusters NGC 362 and NGC 288 are galactic siblings, accreted as part of the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE) merger. To do this, we compare the two GCs at the 0.01 dex level for 20+ elements for the first time. Strong similarities are found, with the two showing chemical similarity on the same order as those seen between the three LMC GCs, NGC 1786, NGC 2210 and NGC 2257. However, when comparing GC abundances directly to GSE stars, marked differences are observed. NGC 362 shows good agreement with GSE stars in the ratio of Eu to Mg and Si, as well as a clear dominance in the r- compared to the s-process, while NGC 288 exhibits only a slight r-process dominance. When fitting the two GC abundances with a GSE-like galactic chemical evolution model, NGC 362 shows agreement with both the model predictions and GSE abundance ratios (considering Si, Ni, Ba and Eu) at the same metallicity. This is not the case for NGC 288. We propose that the two are either not galactic siblings, or GSE was chemically inhomogeneous enough to birth two similar, but not identical clusters with distinct chemistry relative to constituent stars., Comment: Second paper in a series. Planetary nebulae (PNe), the ejected envelopes of red giant stars, provide us with a history of the last, mass-losing phases of 90 percent of stars initially more massive than the Sun. Here, we analyse James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Early Release Observation (ERO) images of the PN NGC3132. A structured, extended H2 halo surrounding an ionised central bubble is imprinted with spiral structures, likely shaped by a low-mass companion orbiting the central star at 40-60 AU. The images also reveal a mid-IR excess at the central star interpreted as a dusty disk, indicative of an interaction with another, closer companion. Including the previously known, A-type visual companion, the progenitor of the NGC3132 PN must have been at least a stellar quartet. The JWST images allow us to generate a model of the illumination, ionisation and hydrodynamics of the molecular halo, demonstrating the power of JWST to investigate complex stellar outflows. Further, new measurements of the A-type visual companion allow us to derive the value for the mass of the progenitor of a central star to date with excellent precision: 2.86+/-0.06 Mo. The view of globular clusters (GCs) as simple systems continues to unravel, revealing complex objects hosting multiple chemical peculiarities. Using differential abundance analysis, we probe the chemistry of the Type I GC, NGC 288 and the Type II GC, NGC 362 at the 2\% level for the first time. We measure 20 elements and find differential measurement uncertainties on the order 0.01-0.02 dex in both clusters. The smallest uncertainties are measured for Fe I in both clusters, with an average uncertainty of $\sim$0.013 dex. Dispersion in the abundances of Na, Al, Ti I, Ni, Fe I, Y, Zr, Ba and Nd are recovered in NGC 288, none of which can be explained by a spread in He. This is the first time, to our knowledge, a statistically significant spread in $s$-process elements and a potential spread in metallicity has been detected in NGC 288. In NGC 362, we find significant dispersion in the same elements as NGC 288, with the addition of Co, Cu, Zn, Sr, La, Ce, and Eu. Two distinct groups are recovered in NGC 362, separated by 0.3 dex in average differential $s$-process abundances. Given strong correlations between Al and several $s$-process elements, and a significant correlation between Mg and Si, we propose that the $s$-process rich group is younger. This agrees with asymptotic giant branch star (AGB) enrichment between generations, if there is overlap between low- and intermediate-mass AGBs. In our scenario, the older population is dominated by the $r$-process with a $\Delta^{\mathrm{La}}-\Delta^{\mathrm{Eu}}$ ratio of $-0.16\pm0.06$. One--dimensional stellar structure and evolution programs are built using different physical prescriptions and algorithms, which means there can be variations between models' predictions even when using identical input physics. This leads to questions about whether such deviations are physical or numerical; code validation studies are important and necessary tools for studying these questions. We provide the first direct comparison between the Monash stellar evolution program and MESA for a $2M_{\odot}$ model evolved from the zero-age main sequence to the tip of the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch. We compare the internal structure of the two models at six critical evolutionary points and find that they are in excellent agreement in characteristics like central temperature, central density and the temperature at the base of the convective envelope during the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch. The hydrogen-exhausted core mass between the models differs by less than 4.2% throughout the entire evolution, the final values vary only by 1.5%. Surface quantities such as luminosity and radius vary by less than 0.2% prior to the asymptotic giant branch. During thermal pulses, the difference extends to 3.4%, largely due to uncertainties in mixing and the treatment of atmospheric boundary conditions. Given that the veteran Monash code is closed source, the present work provides the first fully open-source computational analog. This increases accessibility to precision modeling on the asymptotic giant branch and lays the groundwork for higher-mass calculations that are performed with MESA but preserve the standards of the Monash code during the AGB., Comment: Submitted, ApJ

Of all the light elements, the evolution of lithium (Li) in the Milky Way is perhaps the most difficult to explain. Li is difficult to synthesize and is easily destroyed, making most stellar sites unsuitable for producing Li in sufficient quantities to account for the proto-solar abundance. For decades, novae have been proposed as a potential explanation to this 'Galactic Li problem', and the recent detection of 7Be in the ejecta of multiple nova eruptions has breathed new life into this theory. In this work, we assess the viability of novae as dominant producers of Li in the Milky Way. We present the most comprehensive treatment of novae in a galactic chemical evolution code to date, testing theoretical- and observationally-derived nova Li yields by integrating metallicity-dependent nova ejecta profiles computed using the binary population synthesis code binary c with the galactic chemical evolution code OMEGA+. We find that our galactic chemical evolution models which use observationally-derived Li yields account for the proto-solar Li abundance very well, while models relying on theoretical nova yields cannot reproduce the proto-solar observation. A brief exploration of physical uncertainties including single-stellar yields, the metallicity resolution of our nova treatment, common-envelope physics, and nova accretion efficiencies indicates that this result is robust to physical assumptions. Scatter within the observationally-derived Li yields in novae is identified as the primary source of uncertainty, motivating further observations of 7Be in nova ejecta., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL 28/7/2022

We present a multi-zone galactic chemical evolution (GCE) model for the Milky Way that takes the most recently updated yields of major nucleosynthesis channels into account. It incorporates physical processes commonly found in previous GCE models like supernova and star formation feedback, the radial flow of gas in the disk, and the infall of fresh gas, along with stellar scattering processes like radial migration. We individually analyse the effect of different physical processes present in our model on the observed properties of the Galaxy. The radial flow of gas in the disk plays an important role in establishing the radial gradient for \feh{} in the low-\alphafe{} sequence. Our model with one episode of smooth gas infall and constant star formation efficiency is capable of reproducing the observed \fehalpha{} distribution of stars at different ($R$, $|z|$) positions in the Milky Way. Our results point to the rapid evolution of \alphafe{} after the onset of Type Ia supernovae and a high star formation rate during the formation of the high-\alphafe{} sequence as the origin of dual peaks in \alphafe{}. A secondary infall is unnecessary to reproduce the \alphafe{}-gap and chemical spread in the disk in our model. We additionally compare the median age for various mono-abundance populations and the age-metallicity relation at different ($R$, $|z|$) positions from our fiducial model to observations. Barium (Ba) stars are polluted by material enriched in the slow neutron capture (s-process) elements synthesised in the interior of their former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion star, which is now a white dwarf. We compare individual Ba star abundance patterns to AGB nucleosynthesis models to verify if the AGB model mass is compatible with independently derived AGB mass. We selected a sample of 28 Ba stars for which both self-consistent spectroscopic observation and analysis are available and stellar mass determinations, via positioning the star on the HR diagram and comparing with evolutionary tracks. For this sample stars we considered both previously and recently derived elemental abundances. Then, we performed a detailed comparison of these s-process elemental abundances to different AGB nucleosynthesis models from the Monash and the FRUITY theoretical data sets. We simplified the binary mass transfer by calculating dilution factors to match the [Ce/Fe] value of each star when using different AGB models, and we then compared the diluted model abundances to the complete Ba-star abundance pattern. Our comparison confirms that low mass, non-rotating AGB stellar models with 13C as the main neutron source are the polluters of the vast majority of the considered Ba stars. Out of the 28 stars, in 21 cases the models are in good agreement with both the determined abundances and the independently derived AGB mass, although in 16 cases higher observed abundances of Nb, Ru, Mo and/or Nd, Sm than predicted. For 3 stars we obtain a match to the abundances only by considering models with masses lower than those independently determined. Finally, 4 stars show much higher first s-process peak abundance values than the model predictions, which may represent the signature of a physical and/or nucleosynthetic process that is not represented in the set of models considered here., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

Low and intermediate mass stars with super solar metallicities comprise a known portion of the universe. Yet yields for asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with metallicities greater than $Z=0.04$ do not exist in the literature. This contributes a significant uncertainty to galactic chemical evolution simulations. We present stellar yields of AGB stars for $M=1-8$$M_\odot$ and $Z=0.04-0.10$. We also weight these yields to represent the chemical contribution of a metal-rich stellar population. We find that as metallicity increases, the efficiency of the mixing episodes (known as the third dredge up) on the thermally pulsing AGB (TP-AGB) decrease significantly. Consequently, much of the nucleosynthesis that occurs on the TP-AGB is not represented on the surface of very metal-rich stars. It instead remains locked inside the white dwarf remnant. The temperatures at the base of the convective envelope also decrease with increasing metallicity. For the intermediate mass models, this results in the occurrence of only partial hydrogen burning at this location, if any burning at all. We also investigate heavy element production via the slow neutron capture process (s-process) for three 6$M_\odot$ models: $Z=0.04, 0.05$ and $0.06$. There is minor production at the first s-process peak at strontium, which decreases sharply with increasing metallicity. We find the chemical contributions of our models are dominated by proton capture nucleosynthesis, mixed to the surface during first and second dredge up events. This conclusion is mirrored in our stellar population yields, weighted towards the lower mass regime to reflect the mass distribution within a respective galaxy.

The metallicity of a star affects its evolution in a variety of ways, changing stellar radii, luminosities, lifetimes, and remnant properties. In this work, we use the population synthesis code binary_c to study how metallicity affects novae in the context of binary stellar evolution. We compute a 16-point grid of metallicities ranging from $Z=10^{-4}$ to 0.03, presenting distributions of nova white dwarf masses, accretion rates, delay-times, and initial system properties at the two extremes of our 16-point metallicity grid. We find a clear anti-correlation between metallicity and the number of novae produced, with the number of novae at $Z=0.03$ roughly half that at $Z=10^{-4}$. The white dwarf mass distribution has a strong systematic variation with metallicity, while the shape of the accretion rate distribution is relatively insensitive. We compute a current nova rate of approximately 33 novae per year for the Milky Way, a result consistent with observational estimates relying on extra-Galactic novae but an under-prediction relative to observational estimates relying on Galactic novae. However, the shape of our predicted Galactic white dwarf mass distribution differs significantly to existing observationally derived distributions, likely due to our underlying physical assumptions. In M31, we compute a current nova rate of approximately 36 novae per year, under-predicting the most recent observational estimate of $65^{+15}_{-16}$. Finally, we conclude that when making predictions about currently observable nova rates in spiral galaxies, or stellar environments where star formation has ceased in the distant past, metallicity can likely be considered of secondary importance compared to uncertainties in binary stellar evolution.

Analysis of inclusions in primitive meteorites reveals that several short-lived radionuclides (SLRs) with half-lives $0.1-100$ Myr existed in the early Solar System (ESS). We investigate the ESS origin of $^{107}$Pd, $^{135}$Cs, and $^{182}$Hf, which are produced by $slow$ neutron captures (the $s$-process) in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We modelled the galactic abundances of these SLRs using the OMEGA+ galactic chemical evolution (GCE) code and two sets of mass- and metallicity-dependent AGB nucleosynthesis yields (Monash and FRUITY). Depending on the ratio of the mean life $\tau$ of the SLR to the average length of time between the formation of AGB progenitor $\gamma$, we calculate timescales relevant for the birth of the Sun. If $\tau/\gamma\gtrsim2$, we predict self-consistent isolation times between 9 and 26 Myr by decaying the GCE predicted $^{107}$Pd/$^{108}$Pd, $^{135}$Cs/$^{133}$Cs, and $^{182}$Hf/$^{180}$Hf ratios to their respective ESS ratios. The predicted $^{107}$Pd/$^{182}$Hf ratio indicates that our GCE models are missing $9-73\%$ of $^{107}$Pd and $^{108}$Pd in the ESS. This missing component may have come from AGB stars of higher metallicity than those that contributed to the ESS in our GCE code. If $\tau/\gamma\lesssim0.3$, we calculate instead the time ($T_{\rm LE}$) from the last nucleosynthesis event that added the SLRs into the presolar matter to the formation of the oldest solids in the ESS. For the 2 M$_\odot$, $Z=0.01$ Monash model we find a self-consistent solution of $T_{\rm LE}=25.5$ Myr.

We have calculated the stellar $\beta$-decay rate of the important s-process branching point ${}^{134}$Cs based on the state of the art shell model calculations. At typical $s$-process temperatures ($T\sim$ 0.2-0.3 GK), our new rate is one order of magnitude lower than the widely-used rate from Takahashi and Yokoi (hereafter TY87). The impact on the nucleosynthesis in AGB stars is investigated with various masses and metallicities. Our new decay rate leads to an overall decrease in the ${}^{134}$Ba/${}^{136}$Ba ratio, and well explains the measured ratio in meteorities without introducing the $i$ process. We also derive the elapsed time from the last AGB nucleosynthetic event that polluted the early Solar System to be $>$28 Myr based on the ${}^{135}$Cs/${}^{133}$Cs ratio, which is consistent with the elapsed times derived from ${}^{107}$Pd and ${}^{182}$Hf. New elemental abundances for the neutron-capture elements Sr, Nb, Mo, Ru, La, Sm, and Eu are presented for a large sample of 180 barium (Ba) giant stars, a class of chemically peculiar objects that exhibit in their spectra enhancements of the elements created by the $s$-process, as a consequence of mass transfer between the components of a binary system. The content of heavy elements in these stars, in fact, points to nucleosynthesis mechanisms that took place within a former asymptotic giant branch (AGB) companion, now an invisible white dwarf. From high-resolution ($R=48000$) spectra in the optical, we derived the abundances either by equivalent width measurements or synthetic spectra computations, and compared them with available data for field giant and dwarf stars in the same range of metallicity. A re-determination of La abundances resulted in [La/Fe] ratios up to 1.2 dex lower than values previously reported in literature. The program Ba stars show overabundance of neutron-capture elements, except for Eu, for which the observational data set behave similarly to field stars. Comparison to model predictions are satisfactory for second-to-first $s$-process peak ratios (e.g., [La/Sr]) and the ratios of the predominantly $r$-process element Eu to La. However, the observed [Nb,Mo,Ru/Sr] and [Ce,Nd,Sm/La] ratios show median values higher or at the upper limits of the ranges of the model predictions. Novae are some of the most commonly detected optical transients and have the potential to provide valuable information about binary evolution. Binary population synthesis codes have emerged as the most effective tool for modelling populations of binary systems, but such codes have traditionally employed greatly simplified nova physics, precluding detailed study. In this work, we implement a model treating H and He novae as individual events into the binary population synthesis code \binaryc. This treatment of novae represents a significant improvement on the `averaging' treatment currently employed in modern population synthesis codes. We discuss the evolutionary pathways leading to these phenomena and present nova event rates and distributions of several important physical parameters. Most novae are produced on massive white dwarfs, with approximately 70 and 55 per cent of nova events occurring on O/Ne white dwarfs for H and He novae respectively. Only 15 per cent of H-nova systems undergo a common-envelope phase, but these systems are responsible for the majority of H nova events. All He-accreting He-nova systems are considered post-common-envelope systems, and almost all will merge with their donor star in a gravitational-wave driven inspiral. We estimate the current annual rate of novae in M31 (Andromeda) to be approximately $41 \pm 4$ for H novae, underpredicting the current observational estimate of $65^{+15}_{-16}$, and $0.14\pm0.015$ for He novae. The abundance patterns observed in the Sun and in metal-poor stars show a clear odd-even effect. An important question is whether the odd-even effect in solar-metallicity stars is similar to the Sun, or if there are variations that can tell us about different chemical enrichment histories. In this work, we report for the first time observational evidence of a differential odd-even effect in the solar twin HIP 11915, relative to the solar odd-even abundance pattern. The spectra of this star were obtained with high resolving power (140 000) and signal-to-noise ratio ($\sim$420) using the ESPRESSO spectrograph and the VLT telescope. Thanks to the high spectral quality, we obtained extremely precise stellar parameters ($\sigma(T_{\rm eff})$ = 2 K, $\sigma(\rm{[Fe/H]})$ = 0.003 dex, and $\sigma(\log g)$ = 0.008 dex). We determine the chemical abundance of 20 elements ($Z\leq39$) with high precision ($\sim$0.01 dex), which shows a strong pattern of the odd-even effect even after performing Galactic Chemical Evolution corrections. The odd-even effect is reasonably well-reproduced by a core-collapse supernova of 13 $\rm{M_{\odot}}$ and metallicity Z = 0.001 diluted into a metal-poor gas of 1 $\rm{M_{\odot}}$. Open clusters are unique tracers of the history of our own Galaxy's disk. According to our membership analysis based on \textit{Gaia} astrometry, out of the 226 potential clusters falling in the footprint of GALAH or APOGEE, we find that 205 have secure members that were observed by at least one of the survey. Furthermore, members of 134 clusters have high-quality spectroscopic data that we use to determine their chemical composition. We leverage this information to study the chemical distribution throughout the Galactic disk of 21 elements, from C to Eu. The radial metallicity gradient obtained from our analysis is $-$0.076$\pm$0.009 dex kpc$^{-1}$, which is in agreement with previous works based on smaller samples. Furthermore, the gradient in the [Fe/H] - guiding radius (r$_{\rm guid}$) plane is $-$0.073$\pm$0.008 dex kpc$^{-1}$. We show consistently that open clusters trace the distribution of chemical elements throughout the Galactic disk differently than field stars. In particular, at given radius, open clusters show an age-metallicity relation that has less scatter than field stars. As such scatter is often interpreted as an effect of radial migration, we suggest that these differences are due to the physical selection effect imposed by our Galaxy: clusters that would have migrated significantly also had higher chances to get destroyed. We report the first detection of the Pb II line at 2203.534 Angstroms in three metal-poor stars, using ultraviolet spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. We perform a standard abundance analysis assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) to derive lead (Pb, Z=82) abundances. The Pb II line yields a higher abundance than Pb I lines by +0.36 +/- 0.34 dex and +0.49 +/- 0.28 dex in the stars HD 94028 and HD 196944, where Pb I lines had been detected previously. The Pb II line is likely formed in LTE, and these offsets affirm previous calculations showing that Pb I lines commonly used as abundance indicators underestimate the Pb abundance in LTE. Pb is enhanced in the s-process-enriched stars HD 94028 ([Pb/Fe] = +0.95 +/- 0.14) and HD 196944 ([Pb/Fe] = +2.28 +/- 0.23), and we show that Pb-208 is the dominant Pb isotope in these two stars. The log epsilon(Pb/Eu) ratio in the r-process-enhanced star HD 222925 is 0.76 +/- 0.14, which matches the Solar System r-process ratio and indicates that the Solar System r-process residuals for Pb are, in aggregate, correct. The Th/Pb chronometer in HD 222925 yields an age of 8.2 +/- 5.8 Gyr, and we highlight the potential of the Th/Pb chronometer as a relatively model-insensitive age indicator in r-process-enhanced stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters (7 pages, 2 figures)

Massive sets of stellar spectroscopic observations are rapidly becoming available and these can be used to determine the chemical composition and evolution of the Galaxy with unprecedented precision. One of the major challenges in this endeavour involves constructing realistic models of stellar spectra with which to reliably determine stellar abundances. At present, large stellar surveys commonly use simplified models that assume that the stellar atmospheres are approximately in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). To test and ultimately relax this assumption, we have performed non-LTE calculations for $13$ different elements (H, Li, C, N, O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Mn, and Ba), using recent model atoms that have physically-motivated descriptions for the inelastic collisions with neutral hydrogen, across a grid of $3756$ 1D MARCS model atmospheres that spans $3000\leq T_{\mathrm{eff}}/\mathrm{K}\leq8000$, $-0.5\leq\log{g/\mathrm{cm\,s^{-2}}}\leq5.5$, and $-5\leq\mathrm{[Fe/H]}\leq1$. We present the grids of departure coefficients that have been implemented into the GALAH DR3 analysis pipeline in order to complement the extant non-LTE grid for iron. We also present a detailed line-by-line re-analysis of $50126$ stars from GALAH DR3. We found that relaxing LTE can change the abundances by between $-0.7\,\mathrm{dex}$ and $+0.2\,\mathrm{dex}$ for different lines and stars. Taking departures from LTE into account can reduce the dispersion in the $\mathrm{[A/Fe]}$ versus $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}$ plane by up to $0.1\,\mathrm{dex}$, and it can remove spurious differences between the dwarfs and giants by up to $0.2\,\mathrm{dex}$. To reach a deeper understanding of the origin of elements in the periodic table, we construct Galactic chemical evolution (GCE) models for all stable elements from C (A=12) to U (A=238) from first principles, i.e., using theoretical nucleosynthesis yields and event rates of all chemical enrichment sources. This enables us to predict the origin of elements as a function of time and environment. In the solar neighborhood, we find that stars with initial masses of M>30M_\odot can become failed supernovae if there is a significant contribution from hypernovae (HNe) at M~20-50M_\odot. The contribution to GCE from super asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars (with M~8-10M_\odot at solar metallicity) is negligible, unless hybrid white dwarfs from low-mass super-AGB stars explode as so-called Type Iax supernovae, or high-mass super-AGB stars explode as electron-capture supernovae (ECSNe). Among neutron-capture elements, the observed abundances of the second (Ba) and third (Pb) peak elements are well reproduced with our updated yields of the slow neutron-capture process (s-process) from AGB stars. The first peak elements, Sr, Y, and Zr, are sufficiently produced by ECSNe together with AGB stars. Neutron star mergers can produce rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) elements up to Th and U, but the timescales are too long to explain observations at low metallicities. The observed evolutionary trends, such as for Eu, can well be explained if ~3% of 25-50 M_\odot hypernovae are magneto-rotational supernovae producing r-process elements. Stardust grains that originated in ancient stars and supernovae are recovered from meteorites and carry the detailed composition of their astronomical sites of origin. We present evidence that the majority of large ($\mu$m-sized) meteoritic silicon carbide (SiC) grains formed in C-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars that were more metal-rich than the Sun. In the framework of the slow neutron-captures (the s process) that occurs in AGB stars the lower-than-solar 88Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios measured in the large SiC grains can only be accompanied by Ce/Y elemental ratios that are also lower than solar, and predominately observed in metal-rich barium stars - the binary companions of AGB stars. Such an origin suggests that these large grains represent the material from high-metallicity AGB stars needed to explain the s-process nucleosynthesis variations observed in bulk meteorites (Ek et al. 2020). In the outflows of metal-rich, C-rich AGB stars SiC grains are predicted to be small ($\simeq$ 0.2 $\mu$m-sized); large ($\simeq$ $\mu$m-sized) SiC grains can grow if the number of dust seeds is two to three orders of magnitude lower than the standard value of $10^{-13}$ times the number of H atoms. We therefore predict that with increasing metallicity the number of dust seeds might decrease, resulting in the production of larger SiC grains., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Magnetic fields and stellar spots can alter the equivalent widths of absorption lines in stellar spectra, varying during the activity cycle. This also influences the information that we derive through spectroscopic analysis. In this study we analyse high-resolution spectra of 211 Sun-like stars observed at different phases of their activity cycles, in order to investigate how stellar activity affects the spectroscopic determination of stellar parameters and chemical abundances. We observe that equivalent widths of lines can increase as a function of the activity index log R$^\prime_{\rm HK}$ during the stellar cycle, which also produces an artificial growth of the stellar microturbulence and a decrease in effective temperature and metallicity. This effect is visible for stars with activity indexes log R$^\prime_{\rm HK}$$\geq$$-$5.0 (i.e., younger than 4-5 Gyr) and it is more significant at higher activity levels. Planetary engulfment events involve the chemical assimilation of a planet into a star's external layer. This can cause a change in the chemical pattern of the stellar atmosphere in a way that mirrors the composition of the rocky object engulfed, with the refractory elements being more abundant than the volatiles. Due to these stellar chemical changes, planetary engulfment events can render the process of chemical tagging potentially inaccurate. A line-by-line differential analysis of twin stars in wide binary systems allows us to test the chemical homogeneity of these associations with typical individual stellar Fe I uncertainties of 0.01 dex and eventually unveil chemical anomalies that could be attributed to planetary engulfment events. Out of the 14 systems analysed here, we report the discovery of the most chemically inhomogeneous system to date (HIP34407/HIP34426). The median difference in abundances of refractory elements within the pair is 0.19 dex and the trend between the differential abundances and condensation temperature suggests that the anomaly is likely due to a planetary engulfment event. We calculate the mean evolution of the iron-peak abundance ratios [(Cr,Mn,Co,Zn)/Fe] in the Galaxy, using modern supernova and hypernova chemical yields and a Galactic Chemical Evolution code that assumes homogeneous chemical evolution. We investigate a range of hypernova occurrence rates and are able to produce a chemical composition that is a reasonable fit to the observed values in metal-poor stars. This requires a hypernova occurence rate that is large (50%) in the early Universe, decreasing throughout evolution to a value that is within present day observational constraints (>~ 1%). A large hypernova occurence rate is beneficial to matching the high [Zn/Fe] observed in the most metal-poor stars, although including hypernovae with progenitor mass >= 60 solar masses is detrimental to matching the observed [(Mn,Co)/Fe] evolution at low [Fe/H]. A significant contribution from HNe seems to be critical for producing supersolar [(Co,Zn)/Fe] at low metallicity, though more work will need to be done in order to match the most extreme values. We also emphasise the need to update models for the enrichment sources at higher metallicity, as the satisfactory recovery of the solar values of [(Cr,Mn,Co,Zn)/Fe] still presents a challenge., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

Here we present the discovery of 895 s-process-rich candidates from 454,180 giant stars observed by the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) using a data-driven approach. This sample constitutes the largest number of s-process enhanced stars ever discovered. Our sample includes 187 s-process-rich candidates that are enhanced in both barium and strontium, 49 stars with significant barium enhancement only and 659 stars that show only a strontium enhancement. Most of the stars in our sample are in the range of effective temperature and log g typical of red giant branch (RGB) populations, which is consistent with our observational selection bias towards finding RGB stars. We estimate that only a small fraction (0.5 per cent) of binary configurations are favourable for s-process enriched stars. The majority of our s-process-rich candidates (95 per cent) show strong carbon enhancements, whereas only five candidates (less than 3 percent) show evidence of sodium enhancement. Our kinematic analysis reveals that 97 percent of our sample are disc stars, with the other 3 percent showing velocities consistent with the Galactic halo. The scaleheight of the disc is estimated to be zh=0.634kpc, comparable with values in the literature. A comparison with the yields from asymptotic giant branch (AGB) models suggests that the main neutron source responsible for the Ba and Sr enhancements is the 13C(alpha,n)16O reaction. We conclude that the s-process-rich candidates may have received their overabundances via mass transfer from a previous ABG companion with an initial mass in the range 1-3Msun., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Lead (Pb) is predominantly produced by the slow neutron-capture process (s process) in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. In contrast to significantly enhanced Pb abundances predicted by low-mass, low-metallicity AGB-models, observations of Magellanic post-AGB stars show incompatibly low Pb abundances. Observations of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars whose s-process enrichments are accompanied by heavy elements traditionally associated with the rapid neutron-capture process (r process) have raised the need for a neutron-capture process operating at neutron densities intermediate to the s and r process: the so-called i process. We study i-process nucleosynthesis with single-zone nuclear-network calculations. Our i-process models can explain the heavy-element abundance patterns measured in Magellanic post-AGB stars including their puzzlingly low Pb abundances. Furthermore, the heavy-element enhancements in the post-AGB and CEMP-i stars, particularly their Pb abundance, allow us to characterise the neutron densities and exposures of the i process that produced the observed abundance patterns. We find that the lower-metallicity CEMP-i stars ($\left[ \mathrm{Fe} / \mathrm{H} \right] \approx -2.5$) have heavy-element abundances best matched by models with higher neutron densities and exposures ($\tau > 2.0 \, \mathrm{mbarn}^{-1}$) compared to the higher-metallicity post-AGB stars ($\left[ \mathrm{Fe} / \mathrm{H} \right] \approx -1.3$, $\tau < 1.3 \, \mathrm{mbarn}^{-1}$). This offers new constraints and insights regarding the properties of i-process sites and demonstrates that the responsible process operates on time scales of the order of a few years or less., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We previously explored the circumstellar effects on the Rb and Zr abundances in massive Galactic O-rich AGB stars. Here we are interested in the role of the extended atmosphere in the case of Li and Ca. Li is an important indicator of HBB while the total Ca in these stars could be affected by neutron captures. The Li abundances were previously studied with hydrostatic models, while the Ca abundances have been determined for the first time. We use a modified version of Turbospectrum and consider the presence of a gaseous circumstellar envelope and radial wind. The new Li abundances derived with the pseudo-dynamical models are very similar to those obtained from hydrostatic models (the average difference is 0.18 dex), with no difference for Ca. The Li and Ca content in these stars is only slightly affected by the presence of a circumstellar envelope. We also found that the Li I and Ca I line profiles are not very sensitive to variations of the model wind parameters. The new Li abundances confirm the Li-rich nature of the sample stars, supporting the activation of HBB in massive Galactic AGB stars. This is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions for solar metallicity AGB models from ATON, Monash, and NuGrid/MESA but is at odds with the FRUITY database, which predicts no HBB leading to the production of Li. Most sample stars display nearly solar Ca abundances that are consistent with the available s-process nucleosynthesis models for solar metallicity massive AGB stars, which predict overproduction of 46Ca relatively to the other Ca isotope and the creation of the radiactive isotope 41Ca but no change in the total Ca abundance. A minority of the stars seem to show a significant Ca depletion (by up to 1.0 dex). Theoretical models of stellar evolution predict that most of the lithium inside a star is destroyed as the star becomes a red giant. However, observations reveal that about 1% of red giants are peculiarly rich in lithium, often exceeding the amount in the interstellar medium or predicted from the Big Bang. With only about 150 lithium-rich giants discovered in the past four decades, and no distinguishing properties other than lithium enhancement, the origin of lithium-rich giant stars is one of the oldest problems in stellar astrophysics. Here we report the discovery of 2,330 low-mass (1 to 3$\,M_\odot$) lithium-rich giant stars, which we argue are consistent with internal lithium production that is driven by tidal spin-up by a binary companion. Our sample reveals that most lithium-rich giants have helium-burning cores ($80^{+7}_{-6}\%$), and that the frequency of lithium-rich giants rises with increasing stellar metallicity. We find that while planet accretion may explain some lithium-rich giants, it cannot account for the majority that have helium-burning cores. We rule out most other proposed explanations as the primary mechanism for lithium-rich giants, including all stages related to single star evolution. Our analysis shows that giants remain lithium-rich for only about two million years. We aim to determine the distributions of molecular SiS and CS in the circumstellar envelopes of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch stars and how these distributions differ between stars that lose mass at different rates. In this study we analyse ALMA observations of SiS and CS emission lines for three oxygen-rich galactic AGB stars: IK Tau, with a moderately high mass-loss rate of $5\times10^{-6}$M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$, and W Hya and R Dor with low mass loss rates of $\sim1\times10^{-7}$M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$. These molecules are usually more abundant in carbon stars but the high sensitivity of ALMA allows us to detect their faint emission in the low mass-loss rate AGB stars. The high spatial resolution of ALMA also allows us to precisely determine the spatial distribution of these molecules in the circumstellar envelopes. We run radiative transfer models to calculate the molecular abundances and abundance distributions for each star. We find a spread of peak SiS abundances with $\sim10^{-8}$ for R Dor, $\sim10^{-7}$ for W Hya, and $\sim3\times10^{-6}$ for IK Tau relative to H$_2$. We find lower peak CS abundances of $\sim7\times10^{-9}$ for R Dor, $\sim7\times10^{-8}$ for W Hya and $\sim4\times10^{-7}$ for IK Tau, with some stratifications in the abundance distributions. For IK Tau we also calculate abundances for the detected isotopologues: C$^{34}$S, $^{29}$SiS, $^{30}$SiS, Si$^{33}$S, Si$^{34}$S, $^{29}$Si$^{34}$S, and $^{30}$Si$^{34}$S. Overall the isotopic ratios we derive for IK Tau suggest a lower metallicity than solar., Comment: 16 pages

Context. Barium (Ba) stars are dwarf and giant stars enriched in elements heavier than iron produced by the slow neutron-capture process (s process). They belong to binary systems where the primary star evolved through the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase,during which it produced the s-process elements and transferred them onto the secondary, now observed as a Ba star. Aims. We compare the largest homogeneous set of Ba giant star observations of the s-process elements Y, Zr, La, Ce, and Nd with AGB nucleosynthesis models to reach a better understanding of the s process in AGB stars. Methods. By considering the light-s (ls: Y and Zr) heavy-s (hs: La, Ce, and Nd) and elements individually, we computed for the first time quantitative error bars for the different hs-element/ls-element abundance ratios, and for each of the sample stars. We compared these ratios to low-mass AGB nucleosynthesis models. We excluded La from our analysis because the strong La lines in some of the sample stars cause an overestimation and unreliable abundance determination, as compared to the other observed hs-type elements. Results. All the computed hs-type to ls-type element ratios show a clear trend of increasing with decreasing metallicity with a small spread (less than a factor of 3). This trend is predicted by low-mass AGB models where 13C is the main neutron source. The comparison with rotating AGB models indicates the need for the presence of an angular momentum transport mechanism that should not transport chemical species, but significantly reduce the rotational speed of the core in the advanced stellar evolutionary stages. Extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars are an integral piece in the puzzle that is the early Universe, and although anomolous subclasses of EMP stars such as carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars are well-studied, they make up less than half of all EMP stars with [Fe/H] $\sim -3.0$. The amount of carbon depletion occurring on the red giant branch (carbon offset) is used to determine the evolutionary status of EMP stars, and this offset will differ between CEMP and normal EMP stars. The depletion mechanism employed in stellar models (from which carbon offfsets are derived) is very important, however the only widely available carbon offsets in the literature are derived from stellar models using a thermohaline mixing mechanism that cannot simultaneously match carbon and lithium abundances to observations for a single diffusion coeffcient. Our stellar evolution models utilise a modified thermohaline mixing model that can match carbon and lithium in the metal-poor globular cluster NGC 6397. We compare our models to the bulk of the EMP star sample at [Fe/H] $= -3$ and show that our modified models follow the trend of the observations and deplete less carbon compared to the standard thermohaline mixing theory. We conclude that stellar models that employ the standard thermohaline mixing formalism overestimate carbon offsets and hence CEMP star frequencies, particularly at metallicities where carbon-normal stars dominate the EMP star population., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Stars with unusual elemental abundances offer clues about rare astrophysical events or nucleosynthetic pathways. Stars with significantly depleted magnesium and enhanced potassium ([Mg/Fe] < -0.5; [K/Fe] > 1) have to date only been found in the massive globular cluster NGC 2419 and, to a lesser extent, NGC 2808. The origin of this abundance signature remains unknown, as does the reason for its apparent exclusivity to these two globular clusters. Here we present 112 field stars, identified from 454,180 LAMOST giants, that show significantly enhanced [K/Fe] and possibly depleted [Mg/Fe] abundance ratios. Our sample spans a wide range of metallicities (-1.5 < [Fe/H] < 0.3), yet none show abundance ratios of [K/Fe] or [Mg/Fe] that are as extreme as those observed in NGC 2419. If confirmed, the identified sample of stars represents evidence that the nucleosynthetic process producing the anomalous abundances ratios of [K/Fe] and [Mg/Fe] probably occurs at a wide range of metallicities. This would suggest that pollution scenarios that are limited to early epochs (such as Population III supernovae) are an unlikely explanation, although they cannot be ruled out entirely. This sample is expected to help guide modelling attempts to explain the origin of the Mg-K abundance signature.

The aim of Galactic archaeology is to recover the history of our Galaxy through the information encoded in stars. An unprobed assumption of this field is that the chemical composition of a star is an immutable marker of the gas from which it formed. It is vital to test this assumption on open clusters, group of stars formed from the same gas. Previous investigations have shown that unevolved stars in clusters are chemically homogeneous within the typical uncertainties of these analysis, i.e. 15$\%$ of the elemental abundances. Our strictly differential analysis on five members of the Pleiades allows us to reach precisions of 5$\%$ for most elements and to unveil chemical anomalies within the cluster that could be explained by planet engulfment events. These results reveal that the evolution of planetary systems may alter the chemical composition of stars, challenging our capability of tagging them to their native environments, and also paving the way for the study of planetary architectures and their evolution, through the chemical pattern of their host stars., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. We present a high-resolution (R~35,000), high signal-to-noise (S/N>200) Magellan/MIKE spectrum of the star RAVE J094921.8-161722, a bright (V=11.3) metal-poor red giant star with [Fe/H] = -2.2, identified as a carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) star from the RAVE survey. We report its detailed chemical abundance signature of light fusion elements and heavy neutron-capture elements. We find J0949-1617 to be a CEMP star with s-process enhancement that must have formed from gas enriched by a prior r-process event. Light neutron-capture elements follow a low-metallicity s-process pattern, while the heavier neutron-capture elements above Eu follow an r-process pattern. The Pb abundance is high, in line with an s-process origin. Thorium is also detected, as expected from an r-process origin, as Th is not produced in the s-process. We employ nucleosynthesis model predictions that take an initial r-process enhancement into account, and then determine the mass transfer of carbon and s-process material from a putative more massive companion onto the observed star. The resulting abundances agree well with the observed pattern. We conclude that J0949-1617 is the first bonafide CEMP-r+s star identified. This class of objects has previously been suggested to explain stars with neutron-capture element patterns that originate from neither the r- or s-process alone. We speculate that J0949-1617 formed in an environment similar to those of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies like Tucana III and Reticulum II, which were enriched in r-process elements by one or multiple neutron star mergers at the earliest times.a, Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the relationship between explosion energy and nucleosynthesis in Population III supernovae and provide nucleosynthetic results for the explosions of stars with progenitor masses of $15\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$, $20\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$, $30\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$, $40\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$, $60\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$, and $80\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$, and explosion energies between approximately $10^{50}$ erg and $10^{53}$ erg. We find that the typical abundance pattern observed in metal-poor stars are best matched by supernovae with progenitor mass in the range $15\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ - $30\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$, and explosion energy of $\sim$ ($5$ - $10$) $\times$ $10^{51}$ erg. In these models, a reverse shock caused by jumps in density between shells of different composition serves to decrease synthesis of chromium and manganese, which is favourable to matching the observed abundances in metal-poor stars. Spherically symmetric explosions of our models with progenitor mass $\geq$ $40\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ do not provide yields that are compatible with the iron-peak abundances that are typically observed in metal-poor stars, however, by approximating the yields that we might expect from these models in highly aspherical explosions, we find indications that explosions of stars $40\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ - $80\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ with bipolar jets may be good candidates for the enrichment sources of metal-poor stars with enhanced carbon abundances.

We compare literature data for the isotopic ratios of Zr, Sr, and Ba from analysis of single meteoritic stardust silicon carbide (SiC) grains to new predictions for the slow neutron-capture process (the s process) in metal-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. The models have initial metallicities Z = 0.014 (solar) and Z = 0.03 (twice-solar) and initial masses 2 - 4.5 Msun, selected such as the condition C/O>1 for the formation of SiC is achieved. Because of the higher Fe abundance, the twice-solar metallicity models result in a lower number of total free neutrons released by the 13C({\alpha},n)16O neutron source. Furthermore, the highest-mass (4 - 4.5 Msun) AGB stars of twice-solar metallicity present a milder activation of the 22Ne({\alpha},n)25Mg neutron source than their solar metallicity counterparts, due to cooler temperatures resulting from the effect of higher opacities. They also have a lower amount of the 13C neutron source than the lower-mass models, following their smaller He-rich region. The combination of these different effects allows our AGB models of twice-solar metallicity to provide a match to the SiC data without the need to consider large variations in the features of the 13C neutron source nor neutron-capture processes different from the s process. This raises the question if the AGB parent stars of meteoritic SiC grains were in fact on average of twice-solar metallicity. The heavier-than-solar Si and Ti isotopic ratios in the same grains are in qualitative agreement with an origin in stars of super-solar metallicity because of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. We determine magnesium isotopic abundances of metal poor dwarf stars from the galactic halo, to shed light on the onset of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) star nucleossynthesis in the galactic halo and constrain the timescale of its formation. We observed a sample of eight new halo K dwarfs in a metallicity range of -1.9 < [Fe/H] < -0.9 and 4200 < $T_{eff}$(K) < 4950, using the HIRES spectrograph at the Keck Observatory (R~10^5 and 200 < S/N < 300). We obtain magnesium isotopic abundances by spectral synthesis on three MgH features and compare our results with galactic chemical evolution models. With the current sample, we almost double the number of metal poor stars with Mg isotopes determined from the literature. The new data allow us to determine the metallicity when the $^{26}$Mg abundances start to became important, $[Fe/H] \sim -1.4 \pm 0.1$. The data with $[Fe/H] > -1.4$ are somewhat higher (1-3 $\sigma$) than previous chemical evolution model predictions, indicating perhaps higher yields of the neutron-rich isotopes. Our results using only AGB star enrichment suggest a timescale for formation for the galactic halo of about 0.3 Gyr, but considering also supernova enrichment, the upper limit for the timescale formation is about 1.5 Gyr., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. We investigate evolutionary pathways leading to neutron star formation through the collapse of oxygen-neon white dwarf (ONe WD) stars in interacting binaries. We consider (1) non-dynamical mass transfer where an ONe WD approaches the Chandrasekhar mass leading to accretion-induced collapse (AIC) and (2) dynamical timescale merger-induced collapse (MIC) between an ONe WD and another WD. We present rates, delay times, and progenitor properties for two different treatments of common envelope evolution. We show that AIC neutron stars are formed via many different channels and the most dominant channel depends on the adopted common envelope physics. Most AIC and MIC neutron stars are born shortly after star formation, though some have delay times >10 Gyr. The shortest delay time (25-50 Myr) AIC neutron stars have stripped-envelope, compact, helium-burning star donors, though many prompt AIC neutron stars form via wind-accretion from an asymptotic giant branch star. The longest delay time AIC neutron stars, which may be observed as young milli-second pulsars among globular clusters, have a red giant or main sequence donor at the time of NS formation and will eventually evolve into NS + helium WD binaries. We discuss AIC & MIC binaries as potential gravitational wave sources for LISA. Neutron stars created via AIC undergo a LMXB phase, offering an electromagnetic counterpart for those shortest orbital period sources that LISA could identify. The formation of neutron stars from interacting WDs in binaries is likely to be a key mechanism for the production of LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave sources (NS-NS and BH-NS mergers) in globular clusters., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report deep spectroscopy of ten planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) using the 10.4m GTC. Our targets reside in different regions of M31, including halo streams and dwarf satellite M32, and kinematically deviate from the extended disk. The temperature-sensitive [O III] 4363 auroral line is observed in all targets. For four PNe, the GTC spectra extend beyond 1 micron, enabling explicit detection of the [S III] 6312 and 9069,9531 lines and thus determination of the [S III] temperature. Abundance ratios are derived and generally consistent with AGB model predictions. Our PNe probably all evolved from low-mass (<2 M_sun) stars, as analyzed with the most up-to-date post-AGB evolutionary models, and their main-sequence ages are mostly ~2-5 Gyr. Compared to the underlying, smooth, metal-poor halo of M31, our targets are uniformly metal-rich ([O/H]> -0.4), and seem to resemble the younger population in the stream. We thus speculate that our halo PNe formed in the Giant Stream's progenitor through extended star formation. Alternatively, they might have formed from the same metal-rich gas as did the outer-disk PNe, but was displaced into their present locations as a result of galactic interactions. These interpretations are, although speculative, qualitatively in line with the current picture, as inferred from previous wide-field photometric surveys, that M31's halo is the result of complex interactions and merger processes. The behavior of N/O of the combined sample of the outer-disk and our halo/substructure PNe signifies that hot bottom burning might actually occur at <3 M_sun, but careful assessment is needed., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ); 33 pages including 20 figures and 9 tables

In this paper we present integral field spectroscopy of the extraordinary Type I bipolar planetary nebula Hen 2-111. In the lobes we map fast moving knots of material with [N II]$\lambda 6584$/H$\alpha$ ratios up to 12, and with radial velocities relative to systemic from -340 km/s up to +390 km/s. We find evidence of a bipolar ejection event at a velocity $\sim 600$ km/s from the central star (assumed to be a binary), which occurred about 8000yr ago. The fast moving material is chemically quite distinct from the lower velocity gas in the bipolar lobes., and displays very high N abundances. We show that the fast moving N-rich knots are not photoionised by the central star, and have constructed detailed shock models for the brightest knot. We find a pre-shock density $\sim 6$cm$^{-3}$, and a shock velocity $\sim150$ km/s. The shock is not fully radiative, being only $\sim 600$yr old. This shocked gas is partially H-burnt, with a helium abundance by mass exceeding that of hydrogen, and is interacting with partially H-burnt material ejected in an earlier episode of mass loss. We conclude that the high-velocity material and the bipolar shell must have originated during the late stages of evolution of a common-envelope phase in a close binary system., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables. Important insights into the formation and evolution of the Galactic disc(s) are contained in the chemical compositions of stars. We analysed high-resolution and high signal to noise HARPS spectra of 79 solar twin stars in order to obtain precise determinations of their atmospheric parameters, ages ($\sigma$$\sim$0.4 Gyr) and chemical abundances ($\sigma$$<$0.01~dex) of 12 neutron-capture elements (Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, and Dy). This valuable dataset allows us to study the [X/Fe]-age relations over a time interval of $\sim$10 Gyr and among stars belonging to the thin and thick discs. These relations show that i) the $s$-process has been the main channel of nucleosynthesis of $n$-capture elements during the evolution of the thin disc; ii) the thick disc is rich in $r$-process elements which suggests that its formation has been rapid and intensive. %; iii) a chemical continuity between the thin and thick discs is evident in the abundances of Ba. In addition, the heavy (Ba, La, Ce) and light (Sr, Y, Zr) $s$-process elements revealed details on the dependence between the yields of AGB stars and the stellar mass or metallicity. Finally, we confirmed that both [Y/Mg] and [Y/Al] ratios can be employed as stellar clocks, allowing ages of solar twin stars to be estimated with an average precision of $\sim$0.5~Gyr.

Post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars are known to be chemically diverse. In this paper we present the first observational evidence of a star that has failed the third dredge-up (TDU). J005252.87-722842.9 is a A-type ($T_{\rm eff}$ = 8250 $\pm$ 250K) luminous (8200 $\pm$ 700 $\rm L_{\odot}$), metal-poor ($\textrm{[Fe/H]}$ = $- 1.18 \pm$ 0.10), low-mass (M$_{\rm initial}$ $\approx$ 1.5 $-$ 2.0 $\rm M_{\odot}$) post-AGB star in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Through a systematic abundance study, using high-resolution optical spectra from UVES, we found that this likely post-AGB object shows an intriguing photospheric composition with no confirmed carbon-enhancement (upper limit of [C/Fe] $<$ 0.50) nor enrichment of $s$-process elements. We derived an oxygen abundance of [O/Fe] = 0.29 $\pm$ 0.1. For Fe and O, we took into account the effects of non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE). We could not derive an upper limit for the nitrogen abundance as there are no useful nitrogen lines within our spectral coverage. The chemical pattern displayed by this object has not been observed in single or binary post-AGBs. Based on its derived stellar parameters and inferred evolutionary state, single star nucleosynthesis models predict that this star should have undergone TDU episodes while on the AGB and be carbon-enriched. However, our observations are in contrast with these predictions. We identify two possible Galactic analogues which are likely to be post-AGB stars, but the lack of accurate distances (hence luminosities) to these objects does not allow us to confirm their post-AGB status. If they have low luminosities then they are likely to be dusty post-RGB stars. We present deep high-resolution (R~15,000) and high-quality UVES optical spectrophotometry of nine planetary nebulae with dual-dust chemistry. We compute physical conditions from several diagnostics. Ionic abundances for a large number of ions of N, O, Ne, S, Cl, Ar, K, Fe and Kr are derived from collisionally excited lines. Elemental abundances are computed using state-of-the-art ionization correction factors. We derive accurate C/O ratios from optical recombination lines. We have re-analyzed additional high-quality spectra of 14 PNe from the literature following the same methodology. Comparison with asymptotic giant branch models reveals that about half of the total sample objects are consistent with being descendants of low-mass progenitor stars (M < 1.5 Msun). Given the observed N/O, C/O, and He/H ratios, we cannot discard that some of the objects come from more massive progenitor stars (M > 3--4 Msun) that have suffered a mild HBB. None of the objects seem to be a descendant of very massive progenitors. We propose that in most of the planetary nebulae studied here, the PAHs have been formed through the dissociation of the CO molecule. The hypothesis of a last thermal pulse that turns O-rich PNe into C-rich PNe is discarded, except in three objects, that show C/O > 1. We also discuss the possibility of a He pre-enrichment to explain the most He-enriched objects. We cannot discard other scenarios like extra mixing, stellar rotation or binary interactions to explain the chemical abundances behaviour observed in our sample., Comment: 69 pages, 17 tables, 9 figures. The 95Zr(n,gamma)96Zr reaction cross section is crucial in the modelling of s-process nucleosynthesis in asymptotic giant branch stars because it controls the operation of the branching point at the unstable 95Zr and the subsequent production of 96Zr. We have carried out the measurement of the 94Zr(18O,16O) and 90Zr(18O,16O) reactions and obtained the gamma-decay probability ratio of 96Zr* and 92Zr* to determine the 95Zr(n,gamma)96Zr reaction cross sections with the surrogate ratio method. Our deduced maxwellian-averaged cross section of 66+-16 mb at 30 keV is close to the value recommended by Bao et al. (2000), but 30% and more than a factor of two larger than the values proposed by Toukan & Kappeler (1990) and Lugaro et al. (2014), respectively, and routinely used in s-process models. We tested the new rate in stellar models with masses between 2 and 6 Msun and metallicities 0.014 and 0.03. The largest changes - up 80% variations in 96Zr - are seen in models of mass 3-4 Msun, where the 22Ne neutron source is mildly activated. The new rate can still provide a match to data from meteoritic stardust silicon carbide grains, provided the maximum mass of the parent stars is below 4 Msun, for a metallicity of 0.03., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
