Generative AI models like GPT-4o and DALL-E 3 are reshaping digital content creation, offering industries tools to generate diverse and sophisticated text and images with remarkable creativity and efficiency. This paper examines both the capabilities and challenges of these models within creative workflows. While they deliver high performance in generating content with creativity, diversity, and technical precision, they also raise significant ethical concerns. Our study addresses two key research questions: (a) how these models perform in terms of creativity, diversity, accuracy, and computational efficiency, and (b) the ethical risks they present, particularly concerning bias, authenticity, and potential misuse. Through a structured series of experiments, we analyze their technical performance and assess the ethical implications of their outputs, revealing that although generative models enhance creative processes, they often reflect biases from their training data and carry ethical vulnerabilities that require careful oversight. This research proposes ethical guidelines to support responsible AI integration into industry practices, fostering a balance between innovation and ethical integrity.

Satire detection is essential for accurately extracting opinions from textual data and combating misinformation online. However, the lack of diverse corpora for satire leads to the problem of stylistic bias which impacts the models' detection performances. This study proposes a debiasing approach for satire detection, focusing on reducing biases in training data by utilizing generative large language models. The approach is evaluated in both cross-domain (irony detection) and cross-lingual (English) settings. Results show that the debiasing method enhances the robustness and generalizability of the models for satire and irony detection tasks in Turkish and English. However, its impact on causal language models, such as Llama-3.1, is limited. This study evaluates the effectiveness of Vision Language Models (VLMs) in representing and utilizing multimodal content for fact-checking. To be more specific, we investigate whether incorporating multimodal content improves performance compared to text-only models and how well VLMs utilize text and image information to enhance misinformation detection. Furthermore we propose a probing classifier based solution using VLMs. Our approach extracts embeddings from the last hidden layer of selected VLMs and inputs them into a neural probing classifier for multi-class veracity classification. Through a series of experiments on two fact-checking datasets, we demonstrate that while multimodality can enhance performance, fusing separate embeddings from text and image encoders yielded superior results compared to using VLM embeddings. Furthermore, the proposed neural classifier significantly outperformed KNN and SVM baselines in leveraging extracted embeddings, highlighting its effectiveness for multimodal fact-checking., Comment: Accepted to COLING2025

Deep learning has proven very promising for interpreting MRI in brain tumor diagnosis. However, deep learning models suffer from a scarcity of brain MRI datasets for effective training. Self-supervised learning (SSL) models provide data-efficient and remarkable solutions to limited dataset problems. Therefore, this paper introduces a generative SSL model for brain tumor classification in two stages. The first stage is designed to pre-train a Residual Vision Transformer (ResViT) model for MRI synthesis as a pretext task. The second stage includes fine-tuning a ResViT-based classifier model as a downstream task. Accordingly, we aim to leverage local features via CNN and global features via ViT, employing a hybrid CNN-transformer architecture for ResViT in pretext and downstream tasks. Moreover, synthetic MRI images are utilized to balance the training set. The proposed model performs on public BraTs 2023, Figshare, and Kaggle datasets. Furthermore, we compare the proposed model with various deep learning models, including A-UNet, ResNet-9, pix2pix, pGAN for MRI synthesis, and ConvNeXtTiny, ResNet101, DenseNet12, Residual CNN, ViT for classification. According to the results, the proposed model pretraining on the MRI dataset is superior compared to the pretraining on the ImageNet dataset. Overall, the proposed model attains the highest accuracy, achieving 90.56% on the BraTs dataset with T1 sequence, 98.53% on the Figshare, and 98.47% on the Kaggle brain tumor datasets. As a result, the proposed model demonstrates a robust, effective, and successful approach to handling insufficient dataset challenges in MRI analysis by incorporating SSL, fine-tuning, data augmentation, and combining CNN and ViT.

Recent methods in quantile regression have adopted a classification perspective to handle challenges posed by heteroscedastic, multimodal, or skewed data by quantizing outputs into fixed bins. Although these regression-as-classification frameworks can capture high-density prediction regions and bypass convex quantile constraints, they are restricted by quantization errors and the curse of dimensionality due to a constant number of bins per dimension. To address these limitations, we introduce a conformalized high-density quantile regression approach with a dynamically adaptive set of prototypes. Our method optimizes the set of prototypes by adaptively adding, deleting, and relocating quantization bins throughout the training process. Moreover, our conformal scheme provides valid coverage guarantees, focusing on regions with the highest probability density. Experiments across diverse datasets and dimensionalities confirm that our method consistently achieves high-quality prediction regions with enhanced coverage and robustness, all while utilizing fewer prototypes and memory, ensuring scalability to higher dimensions. This paper presents Key2Mesh, a model that takes a set of 2D human pose keypoints as input and estimates the corresponding body mesh. Since this process does not involve any visual (i.e. RGB image) data, the model can be trained on large-scale motion capture (MoCap) datasets, thereby overcoming the scarcity of image datasets with 3D labels. To enable the model's application on RGB images, we first run an off-the-shelf 2D pose estimator to obtain the 2D keypoints, and then feed these 2D keypoints to Key2Mesh. To improve the performance of our model on RGB images, we apply an adversarial domain adaptation (DA) method to bridge the gap between the MoCap and visual domains. Crucially, our DA method does not require 3D labels for visual data, which enables adaptation to target sets without the need for costly labels. We evaluate Key2Mesh for the task of estimating 3D human meshes from 2D keypoints, in the absence of RGB and mesh label pairs. Our results on widely used H3.6M and 3DPW datasets show that Key2Mesh sets the new state-of-the-art by outperforming other models in PA-MPJPE for both datasets, and in MPJPE and PVE for the 3DPW dataset. Thanks to our model's simple architecture, it operates at least 12x faster than the prior state-of-the-art model, LGD. The rapid spread of misinformation through social media platforms has raised concerns regarding its impact on public opinion. While misinformation is prevalent in other languages, the majority of research in this field has concentrated on the English language. Hence, there is a scarcity of datasets for other languages, including Turkish. To address this concern, we have introduced the FCTR dataset, consisting of 3238 real-world claims. This dataset spans multiple domains and incorporates evidence collected from three Turkish fact-checking organizations. Additionally, we aim to assess the effectiveness of cross-lingual transfer learning for low-resource languages, with a particular focus on Turkish. We demonstrate in-context learning (zero-shot and few-shot) performance of large language models in this context. The rapid dissemination of misinformation through social media increased the importance of automated fact-checking. Furthermore, studies on what deep neural models pay attention to when making predictions have increased in recent years. While significant progress has been made in this field, it has not yet reached a level of reasoning comparable to human reasoning. To address these gaps, we propose a multi-task explainable neural model for misinformation detection. Specifically, this work formulates an explanation generation process of the model's veracity prediction as a text summarization problem. Additionally, the performance of the proposed model is discussed on publicly available datasets and the findings are evaluated with related studies.

Detecting events by using social media has been an active research problem. In this work, we investigate and compare the performance of two methods for event detection in Twitter by using Apache Storm as the stream processing infrastructure. The first event detection method is based on identifying uncommonly common words inside tweet blocks, and the second one is based on clustering tweets to detect a cluster as an event. Each of the methods has its own characteristics. Uncommonly common word based method relies on the burst of words and hence is not affected from concurrency problems in distributed environment. On the other hand, clustering based method includes a finer grained analysis, but it is sensitive to the concurrent processing. We investigate the effect of stream processing and concurrency handling support provided by Apace Storm on event detection by these methods.

Diffusion models are generative models that have shown significant advantages compared to other generative models in terms of higher generation quality and more stable training. However, the computational need for training diffusion models is considerably increased. In this work, we incorporate prototype learning into diffusion models to achieve high generation quality faster than the original diffusion model. Instead of randomly initialized class embeddings, we use separately learned class prototypes as the conditioning information to guide the diffusion process. We observe that our method, called ProtoDiffusion, achieves better performance in the early stages of training compared to the baseline method, signifying that using the learned prototypes shortens the training time. We demonstrate the performance of ProtoDiffusion using various datasets and experimental settings, achieving the best performance in shorter times across all settings.

Large language models (LLMs) have made significant advancements in natural language processing (NLP). Broad corpora capture diverse patterns but can introduce irrelevance, while focused corpora enhance reliability by reducing misleading information. Training LLMs on focused corpora poses computational challenges. An alternative approach is to use a retrieval-augmentation (RetA) method tested in a specific domain. To evaluate LLM performance, OpenAI's GPT-3, GPT-4, Bing's Prometheus, and a custom RetA model were compared using 19 questions on diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) disease. Eight independent reviewers assessed responses based on accuracy, relevance, and readability (rated 1-3). The RetA model performed best in accuracy (12/19 3-point scores, total=47) and relevance (13/19, 50), followed by GPT-4 (8/19, 43; 11/19, 49). GPT-4 received the highest readability scores (17/19, 55), followed by GPT-3 (15/19, 53) and the RetA model (11/19, 47). Prometheus underperformed in accuracy (34), relevance (32), and readability (38). Both GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 had more hallucinations in all 19 responses compared to the RetA model and Prometheus. Hallucinations were mostly associated with non-existent references or fabricated efficacy data. These findings suggest that RetA models, supplemented with domain-specific corpora, may outperform general-purpose LLMs in accuracy and relevance within specific domains. However, this evaluation was limited to specific questions and metrics and may not capture challenges in semantic search and other NLP tasks. Further research will explore different LLM architectures, RetA methodologies, and evaluation methods to assess strengths and limitations more comprehensively.

We perform extensive spectroscopy of the supernova remnant N63A in the Large Magellanic Cloud, using $\sim 43$ ks {\it Chandra} archival data. By analysing the spectra of the entire remnant, we determine the abundance distributions for O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe. We detect evidence of enhanced O and possibly Ne and Mg in some of the central regions which might indicate an asymmetric distribution of the ejecta. The average O/Ne, O/Mg, and Ne/Mg abundance ratios of the ejecta are in plausible agreement with the nucleosynthesis products from the explosion of a $\sim40$ $M_{\odot}$ progenitor. We estimate an upper limit on the Sedov age of $\sim 5,400\pm200$ yr and explosion energy of $\sim 8.9\pm 1.6\times 10^{51}$ erg for N63A. The problem of text-guided image generation is a complex task in Computer Vision, with various applications, including creating visually appealing artwork and realistic product images. One popular solution widely used for this task is the diffusion model, a generative model that generates images through an iterative process. Although diffusion models have demonstrated promising results for various image generation tasks, they may only sometimes produce satisfactory results when applied to more specific domains, such as the generation of textile patterns based on text guidance. This study presents a fine-tuned diffusion model specifically trained for textile pattern generation by text guidance to address this issue. The study involves the collection of various textile pattern images and their captioning with the help of another AI model. The fine-tuned diffusion model is trained with this newly created dataset, and its results are compared with the baseline models visually and numerically. The results demonstrate that the proposed fine-tuned diffusion model outperforms the baseline models in terms of pattern quality and efficiency in textile pattern generation by text guidance. Biparametric MRI has emerged as an alternative to multiparametric prostate MRI, which eliminates the need for the potential harms to the patient due to the contrast medium. One major issue with biparametric MRI is difficulty to detect clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCA). Deep learning algorithms have emerged as an alternative solution to detect csPCA in cohort studies. We present a workflow which predicts csPCA on biparametric prostate MRI PI-CAI 2022 Challenge with over 10,000 carefully-curated prostate MRI exams. We propose to to segment the prostate gland first to the central gland (transition + central zone) and the peripheral gland. Then we utilize these predcitions in combination with T2, ADC and DWI images to train an ensemble nnU-Net model. Finally, we utilize clinical indices PSA and ADC intensity distributions of lesion regions to reduce the false positives. Our method achieves top results on open-validation stage with a AUROC of 0.888 and AP of 0.732.
