10. Developing a predictive model for low-temperature Laval nozzles with applications in chemical kinetics.

Abstract

Laval nozzles are used in the CRESU ("Cinétique de Réaction en Écoulement Supersonique Uniforme") method to generate a collimated low temperature (5–200 K), low pressure (30–500 Pa), high Mach number (1 < M < 20) supersonic jet. Laval nozzles have been designed using the Method of Characteristics (MOC) since the development of CRESU, which is an analytical method that assumes inviscid, isentropic flow, and is routinely used to design nozzle profiles for a particular gas and temperature with a uniform shock free exit. This study aims to provide a robust computational framework to overcome the limitations of the MOC while also providing recommendations on the numerical model setup required to model a low-temperature supersonic jet. It also discusses the blockage effects when using the Pitot tube method for flow characterization, the influence of inlet turbulence and reservoir size. Numerical results are validated using two different experimental apparatuses from research groups at the University of Leeds and the University of Birmingham. Finally, a MATLAB framework was developed and has been provided as an open source toolbox to allow any user to perform computational fluid dynamics on any Laval nozzle, with the ability to change nozzle geometry, operating conditions and bath gas. The toolbox has been rigorously tested against many benchmark cases, which shows that steady-state Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes with the k-omega-shear stress transport turbulence model can be used to accurately predict global quantities, such as average temperature in the stable region of the supersonic jet. Abstract

Background: We investigated disparities in the clinical management of self-harm following hospital presentation with self-harm according to level of socio-economic deprivation (SED) in England. Methods: 108 092 presentations to hospitals (by 57 306 individuals) after self-harm in the Multicenter Study of Self-harm spanning 17 years. Area-level SED was based on the English Index of Multiple Deprivation. Information about indicators of clinical care was obtained from each hospital's self-harm monitoring systems. We assessed the associations of SED with indicators of care using mixed effect models. Results: Controlling for confounders, psychosocial assessment and admission to a general medical ward were less likely for presentations by patients living in more deprived areas relative to presentations by patients from the least deprived areas. Referral for outpatient mental health care was less likely for presentations by patients from the two most deprived localities (most deprived: adjusted odd ratio [aOR] 0.77, 95% CI 0.71–0.83, p < 0.0001; 2nd most deprived: aOR 0.80, 95% CI 0.74–0.87, p < 0.0001). Referral to substance use services and 'other' services increased with increased SED. Overall, referral for aftercare was less likely following presentations by patients living in the two most deprived areas (most deprived: aOR 0.85, 95% CI 0.78–0.92, p < 0.0001; 2nd most deprived: aOR 0.86, 95% CI 0.79–0.94, p = 0.001). Conclusions: SED is associated with differential care for patients who self-harm in England. Inequalities in care may exacerbate the risk of adverse outcomes in this disadvantaged population. Abstract

We describe two different modes for electronically detecting an adsorbed molecule using a nanoscale transistor. The attachment of an ionic molecular target shifts the threshold voltage through modulation of the depletion layer electrostatics. A stronger bonding between the molecule and the channel, involving actual overlap of their quantum mechanical wavefunctions, leads to scattering by the molecular traps that creates characteristic fingerprints when scanned with a backgate. Abstract

We outline the qualitatively different physics behind charging-induced current asymmetries in molecular conductors operating in the weakly interacting self-consistent field (SCF) and the strongly interacting Coulomb Blockade (CB) regimes. A conductance asymmetry arises in SCF because of the unequal mean-field potentials that shift a closed-shell conducting level differently for positive and negative bias. A very different current asymmetry arises for CB due to the unequal number of open-shell excitation channels at opposite bias voltages. The CB regime, dominated by single charge effects, typically requires a computationally demanding many-electron or Fock space description. However, our analysis of molecular Coulomb Blockade measurements reveals that many novel signatures can be explained using a {{simpler}} orthodox model that involves an incoherent sum of Fock space excitations and {\it{hence treats the molecule as a metallic dot or an island}}. This also reduces the complexity of the Fock space description by just including various charge configurations only, thus partially underscoring the importance of electronic structure, while retaining the essence of the single charge nature of the transport process. We finally point out, however, that the inclusion of electronic structure and hence well-resolved Fock space excitations is crucial in some notable examples., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

30. Joshimath landslides and subsidence 2023 in Uttarakhand Himalaya: A critical geological analysis and a lesson for sustainable development

Abstract

The tourist town of Joshimath in the west of Indian Himalayas, is bounded by NNW-SSE Munsiari Thrust in the north and Main Central Thrust Faults in the south. The study of tectonic structural configuration indicates that these two faults caused differential fragmentation of Joshimath slab. Like many other parts of a young mountain building system, the town is prone to various types of landslides, subsidence, slope failures, avalanches, debris and mud flows. The surface geological materials are composed of heterogeneous piedmont deposits in northern slope of the mountain facet, consisting of weathered boulders of gneisses and schistose rocks amalgamated with silty-sandy matrix. This study finds that the Alakananda River strongly smack the north-east foothill of Joshimath cliff from the north and cause severe scour, erosion of the ground and infiltration of running water before merging into a structurally controlled vertical gorge. The remaining volume of water is carried out by Dhauliganga river. The existence of number of active NS trending short gravitational (Normal) faults and deep fractures in the east and west side of the Joshimath town, caused northward slip of the Joshimath slab. Our mathematical modelling suggest that tensile stresses generated in compressive thrust wedge under low friction on boundary thrust of wedge causes shallow subsidence. Unplanned construction activities and inconsistent modification of natural topography add on to the impact of natural degradation and damages urban structures. A planned urban construction consistent with geological and geomorphological environment and aligned to the seismic and meteorological conditions is recommended in Himalayas., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

31. Development of a multistep, electrochemical flow platform for automated catalyst screening

Abstract

The development of an integrated multistep flow platform that incorporates high-throughput electrochemical synthesis of metal catalysts and catalysis screening is described. Ligand libraries can be screened through the implementation of an autosampler, and online HPLC analysis facilitates continuous monitoring of the reaction. The equipment is controlled via a computer which enables the process to be automated, with the platform running ligand/catalysis screens autonomously. The platform has been validated using a ubiquitous Cu–NHC catalysed click reaction, with conditions chosen so that the reaction does not run at full conversion, which allows the effect of different ligand precursors to be observed. An efficient cleaning step is crucial to the reproducibility of reactions, and alternating polarity ensures the long-term stability of the electrochemical reactor. This technology will enable the profiling of catalysts in continuous systems and accelerate the process of developing more sustainable base-metal catalysts in manufacturing processes.

34. Online harms? Suicide-related online experience: a UK-wide case series study of young people who die by suicide.

Abstract

Background: Few studies have examined online experience by young people who die by suicide. Methods: A 3-year UK-wide consecutive case series of all young people aged 10–19 who died by suicide, based on national mortality data. We extracted information on the antecedents of suicide of 544 of these 595 deaths (91%) from official investigations, mainly inquests. Results: Suicide-related online experience was reported in 24% (n = 128/544) of suicide deaths in young people between 2014 and 2016, equivalent to 43 deaths per year, and was more common in girls than boys (OR 1.87, 95% CI 1.23–2.85, p = 0.003) and those identifying as LGBT (OR 2.35, 95% CI 1.10–5.05, p = 0.028). Searching for information about method was most common (n = 68, 13%), followed by posting suicidal ideas online (n = 57, 10%). Self-harm, bereavement (especially by suicide), social isolation, and mental and physical ill-health were more likely in those known to have suicide-related online experience compared to those who did not. 29 (5%) were bullied online, more often girls (OR 2.84, 1.34–6.04, p = 0.007). Online bullying often accompanied face-to-face bullying (n = 16/29, 67%). Conclusions: Suicide-related online experience is a common, but likely underestimated, antecedent to suicide in young people. Although its causal role is unclear, it may influence suicidality in this population. Mental health professionals should be aware that suicide-related online experience – not limited to social media – is a potential risk for young patients, and may be linked to experiences offline. 43. Magnesium Ions Direct the Solid-State Transformation of Amorphous Calcium Carbonate Thin Films to Aragonite, Magnesium-Calcite, or Dolomite

Abstract

Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) is a common precursor to crystalline calcium carbonate, and is of particular importance in biomineralization, where its crystallization in privileged environments ensures a pseudomorphic transformation. While organisms regulate this process using organic molecules and magnesium ions to selectively form calcite or aragonite, it has proven highly challenging to replicate this polymorph selectivity synthetically. Here, it is demonstrated that remarkable control can be achieved over the chemical composition and structure of crystalline calcium carbonate by using heat to drive a pseudomorphic transformation of ACC thin films. The crystal polymorph can be tuned from low magnesium-calcite to pure aragonite, high magnesium-calcite, and ultimately dolomite according to the magnesium content of the ACC, and mosaics of large single crystals are generated at elevated temperatures rather than the spherulitic structures formed at room temperature. This methodology also enables an in situ investigation of the ACC crystallization mechanism using transmission electron microscopy. Finally, the approach can be combined with templating methods to generate arrays of large aragonite single crystals with preselected morphologies. These results demonstrate that exceptional control can be achieved through the solid-state transformation of Mg-ACC, which has relevance to both synthetic and biological systems.
