- Abstract
One of the main courses that have been affected by instructional technology is science education since the nature of topics covered by the science curriculum may require the usage of technology to teach them better. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of virtual laboratories on the development of gifted children's conceptual knowledge and the improvement of inquiry skills. A total of 43 sixth-grade gifted learners were the participants: 22 in the control group, in which hands-on experimentation was conducted, and 21 sixth-grade pupils in the experimental group, where virtual laboratory environments were used. Two different data-gathering tools, namely a multiple-choice conceptual knowledge test and an inquiry skills test, were used in this study. The results revealed that although both groups enhanced their conceptual knowledge and improved their inquiry skills throughout the study, the students in the experimental group reached significantly higher scores than their counterparts for both of the tests. Several suggestions are made for both science teachers and researchers concerning the outcomes of the current study.

- Abstract
It is important to explore children's perceptions related to scientists for preventing their lack of interest in science and avoidance of science careers. This study aims to reveal middle school students' images of scientists, with an analysis of how those images may be influenced by middle school science textbooks currently use in Turkey. It was also examined students' opinions related to becoming a scientist. The study is based on a qualitative research methodology. The sample consists of 98 students from a middle school (5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade). The data was gathered by four science textbooks, the Draw a Scientist Test (DAST) and an open-ended questionnaire. The findings showed that most of the middle school students think that scientists as men, happy, wearing lab coats and glasses, working individually in indoor places. Albert Einstein and Isaac Newton were drawn as the most famous scientists. The images of scientists in the science textbooks were mostly men. On the other side, more than half of the students were not sure or not eager to be scientists for their future careers because of negative thoughts on scientific studies and not matching their own characters and the characters that scientists should have.

- Abstract
It is an indispensable fact that having a positive attitude towards science is one of the important factors that promotes students for studying in science. The study is a kind of national study that aims to investigate middle school students', from different regions of Turkey, attitudes toward science, scientists and science classes. The study was done with 2,063 students from fourth grade to eighth grade from all regions of Turkey. The Assessing Attitudes and Preferences in Science (AAPS) instrument was used in the current study. The findings showed that students from western regions of Turkey have more positive attitudes toward science and the other related concepts. Furthermore it was reached that girls have more positive attitudes toward these concepts than boys. It was also found students' attitudes toward science decreases with respect to grade level (or age). Lastly, possible reasons of such results were discussed.

- Abstract
Textbooks are one of the primary teaching tools frequently used in schools and most teachers use them in their classrooms (Sanchez and Valcarcel, 1999). Since there are a lot of abstract concepts in science education, images in science textbooks play a vital role in the learning process (Kenan et al., 2011). Concretization of abstract concepts may ease students' understanding. For this reason, the aim of this study was to examine images about the particulate nature of matter (PNM) in Turkish middle school science textbooks. In other words, visuals were examined with respect to representational levels, relatedness to text, existence and properties of the captions. The rubric developed by Gkitzia et al. (2011) was used to evaluate the images from middle school science textbooks in selected units. A total of 825 images in Turkish middle school science textbooks were identified in related units. In addition, it was found that the most common representation type of images about the PNM in Turkish middle school science textbooks were macroscopic representations (36%). The relatedness of images to the text was also studied. It was concluded that just 4 out of 10 images were completely related and linked to the text. Lastly, it was found that more than half of the images about the PNM in Turkish middle school science textbooks had no caption.

Textbooks are one of the main tools used frequently by teachers in the classrooms (Sanchez & Valcarcel, 1999). As a result, there are many studies (Arslan, Tekbıyık & Ercan, 2012; Güzel & Adıbelli, 2011; Kahveci, 2010; Pappa & Tsaparlis, 2011; Pedrosa & Dias, 2000) about textbooks in the literature. On the other hand, due to the fact that the particulate nature of matter is related to many other topics in science education, it is one of the crucial topics to study for researchers (Griffiths & Preston, 1992; Ingham & Gilbert, 1991; Nakhleh & Samarapungavan, 1999; Boz, 2006). Moreover including a lot of abstract concepts (Colburn, 1999), images related to the paticulate nature of matter in scince textbooks have an important role (Irving et al., 2006).In this study, images about particulate nature of matter in middle school science textbooks were examined. In this context, three science textbooks for sixth grade, three science textbooks for seventh grade and two science textbooks for eighth grade were selected. All textbooks are accepted by Ministry of National Education to be used at middle schools. Document analysis, which is a kind of qualitative research methods, was used in the study. 825 images about particulate nature of matter were determined from all textbooks. These images were evaluated by using the scale developed from two different scales developed by respectively Gkitzia, Salta and Tzougraki (2011) and Pozzer and Roth (2003). According to the data analysis, 2.75 images per page about particulate nature of matter uses at seventh grade science textbooks. This result shows that the particulate nature of matter in science textbooks used in Turkey include much more images than textbooks used in some other countries (Pozzer & Roth, 2003; Roth, Bowen & McGinn, 1999). Moreover, seventh grade science textbooks have the highest number of images related to particulate nature of matter. In addition, macroscobic images are the most commonly used at middle school science textbooks. This may show that the particulate nature of matter is explained in science textbooks through using concrete concepts. Finally, half of the images about particulate nature of matter in science textbooks do not have any caption. 120
