Abstract

Two-dimensional (2-D) monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are promising materials for realizing ultracompact, low-threshold semiconductor lasers. And the development of the electrical-driven TMDC devices is crucial for enhancing the integration potential of practical optoelectronic systems. However, at current stage, the electrically-driven 2-D TMDC laser has never been realized. Herein, we have developed the first electrically-driven 2-D TMDC microcavity laser.

9. Controlling light localization with nanophotonic metamaterials

Abstract

Light localization plays an important role in developing high resolution imaging and precision technologies in nanophotonics. In order to create and control nanoscale light localizations, this thesis has investigated into two research topics with different types of nanophotonic metamaterials: precise control of near-field light localizations and subwavelength light concentration beyond the near field. For the first topic, (i) I have demonstrated for the first time that a planar fish-scale metamaterial can be used as a controllable template for nanoscale light localizations. By tuning the polarization and wavelength of an incident light beam, the positions of energy hot-spots on the landscape of the metamaterial can be efficiently controlled. Moreover, it has been found that the locations of the hot-spots show a high correlation with the nanostructure, the unit cell size, and the dipole absorption resonance of the fish-scale metamaterial. In an array of discrete asymmetrically split-ring meta-molecules system, (ii) I have also demonstrated for the first time that the well-isolated subwavelength energy hot-spots can be created and positioned on the metamaterial landscape by the coherent control of a monochromatic continuous light beam with a spatially modulated phase profile. Due to the strong optically induced interactions between meta-molecules, a well-isolated energy hot-spot of a fraction of wavelength has been created. By simply tailoring the phase profile, the hot-spot positions on the metamaterial can be prescribed and moved at will from one meta-molecule to another in a digital fashion with an accurate moving step around λ/2. In my experiments, (iii) I have integrated a scanning near-field optical microscope and a spatial light modulator to demonstrate the coherent control process. Via this approach, an energy concentration on the nanoscale and accurate control of the energy hot-spots have been achieved. For the second topic, based on optical super-oscillation, (iv) I have first created an isolated focused spot by using a super-oscillating binary masks with radially symmetric quasi-periodic arrangement of nanoholes. The well-isolated focused spot around 0.45 λ has been acquired in a wide field of view about 90 λ. (v) Discovering another exploitation of nanohole arrays, it has been shown that a quasi-periodic nanohole array can be used as a conventional lens with a high numerical aperture around 0.89.

Abstract

This paper is going to review the state-of-the-art of the high-speed 850/940-nm vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), discussing the structural design, mode control and the related data transmission performance. InGaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum well (MQW) was used to increase the differential gain and photon density in VCSEL. The multiple oxide layers and oxide-confined aperture were well designed in VCSEL to decrease the parasitic capacitance and generate single mode (SM) VCSEL. The maximal modulation bandwidth of 30 GHz was achieved with well-designed VCSEL structure. At the end of the paper, other applications of the near-infrared VCSELs are discussed.

Abstract

The relation between recording mark formation and jitter value with Radial Orient Spot (ROS) type laser spot recording was investigated by using a new imaging method of conductive-atomic force microscopy (C-AFM). The readout performances of recording marks were studied by changing the terminal resistance of optical pickup head and writing strategies. The results of clear C-AFM images showed that is possible to adjust the conditions of terminal resistance and writing strategies to have better readout signal performance. 29. Terahertz Analysis of CH3NH3PbI3Perovskites Associated with Graphene and Silver Nanowire Electrodes

Abstract

In order to investigate the thermal and chemical (in)stabilities of MAPbI3incorporated with graphene and silver nanowire (AgNW) electrodes, we employed the terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy, which has a unique ability to deliver the information of electrical properties and the intermolecular bonding and crystalline nature of materials. In in situ THz spectroscopy of MAPbI3, we observed a slight blue-shift in frequency of the 2 THz phonon mode as temperatures increase across the tetragonal-cubic structural phase transition. For MAPbI3with the graphene top electrode, no noticeable frequency shift is observed until the temperature reaches the maximum operating temperature of solar cells (85 °C). Phonon frequency shift is sensitive to the strain-induced tilt of PbI6octahedra and our results indicate that graphene forms a stable interface with MAPbI3and is also effective in suppression of the undesirable phase transition. Meanwhile, for MAPbI3coupled with the AgNW bottom electrode, the THz conductivity was found to be as low as that of the MAPbI3single layer, attributed to the chemical reaction between Ag atoms and iodide ions. The THz conductivity is greatly increased when an ultrathin Al2O3interlayer is introduced to cover the AgNW network via the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method. ALD of Al2O3on the AgNW surfaces at low temperature guarantees a conformal coating, which strongly affects the ohmic contacts between the NWs. Our results demonstrate the advantage of THz spectroscopy for the comprehensive analysis of thermal and chemical stabilities of perovskites associated with the electrode materials.
