1. Unbounded Sharing of Nonlocality Using Projective Measurements

Abstract

It is a common perception that a sharp projective measurement in one side of the Bell experiment destroys the entanglement of the shared state, thereby preventing the demonstration of sequential sharing of nonlocality. In contrast, we introduce a local randomness-assisted projective measurement protocol, enabling the sharing of nonlocality by an arbitrary number of sequential observers (Bobs) with a single spatially separated party Alice. Subsequently, a crucial feature of the interplay between the degrees of incompatibility of observables of both parties is revealed, enabling the unbounded sharing of nonlocality. Our findings, not only offer a new paradigm for understanding the fundamental nature of incompatibility in demonstrating quantum nonlocality but also pave a new path for various information processing tasks based on local randomness-assisted projective measurement.

2. The Quantum Cheshire Cat effect: Theoretical basis and observational implications

Abstract

The Quantum Cheshire Cat (QCC) is an effect introduced recently within the Weak Measurements framework. The main feature of the QCC effect is that a property of a quantum particle appears to be spatially separated from its position. The status of this effect has however remained unclear, as claims of experimental observation of the QCC have been disputed by strong criticism of the experimental as well as the theoretical aspects of the effect. In this paper we clarify in what precise sense the QCC can be regarded as an unambiguous consequence of the standard quantum mechanical formalism applied to describe quantum pointers weakly coupled to a system. In light of this clarification, the raised criticisms of the QCC effect are rebutted. We further point out that the limitations of the experiments performed to date imply that a loophole-free experimental demonstration of the QCC has not yet been achieved., Comment: Context was clarified. 4. Influence of surface tension on two fluids shearing instability

Abstract

Using extended Layzer's potential flow model, we investigate the effects of surface tension on the growth of the bubble and spike in combined Rayleigh-Taylor and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The nonlinear asymptotic solutions are obtained analytically for the velocity and curvature of the bubble and spike tip. We find that the surface tension decreases the velocity but does not affect the curvature, provided surface tension is greater than a critical value. For a certain condition, we observe that surface tension stabilizes the motion. Any perturbation, whatever its magnitude, results stable with nonlinear oscillations. The nonlinear oscillations depend on surface tension and relative velocity shear of the two fluids., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Concern exists regarding the validity of their generalization to all populations. Existing risk scoring models do not incorporate emerging ‘novel’ risk factors. In this context, the aim of the study was to examine the relevance of British, European, and Framingham predictive CVD risk scores to the asymptomatic high risk Indian population. Blood samples drawn from the participants were analyzed for various ‘traditional’ and ‘novel’ biomarkers, and their CVD risk factor profiling was also done. The Framingham model defined only 5% of the study cohort to be at high risk, which appears to be an underestimation of CVD risk in this genetically predisposed population. These subjects at high risk had significantly elevated levels of lipid, pro-inflammatory, pro-thrombotic, and serological markers. It is more relevant to develop risk predictive scores for application to the Indian population. This study substantiates the argument that alternative approaches to risk stratification are required in order to make them more adaptable and applicable to different populations with varying risk factor and disease patterns.Keywords: atherosclerosis, risk factors, risk score, Framingham, plasma biomarkers

Abstract

Low calorie structured lipid (SL1) containing essential fatty acids and having hypocholesterolemic activity was prepared by enzymatic interesterification of sunflower oil with ethyl behenate. DSC studies indicated the similarity in melting profile of SL1 with that of commercial bakery shortenings. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of replacing bakery fat with SL1 in the preparation of biscuits and cakes on the sensory and acceptability of these products. The organoleptic and quality characteristics of the biscuits prepared with SL1 are comparable with those of biscuits prepared with commercial bakery fat. However, such replacement during the preparation of cake requires the addition of emulsifier to have the product indistinguishable from that prepared using traditional bakery fat. The bakery product prepared with SL1 is low in calorie and free from trans fats. Thus the utility of novel fat with lower calorific value and having hypocholesterolemic activity in product preparation is demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

36. Isolation and antimicrobial evaluation of isomeric hydroxy ketones in leaf cuticular waxes of Annona squamosa.

Abstract

A novel natural compound, 11-hydroxy-16-hentriacontanone, has been isolated from the leaf cuticular wax of Annona squamosa along with its known isomer 10-hydroxy-16-hentriacontanone in a ratio of 67:33. This isomeric mixture of hydroxy ketones constituted together 16.5% of the total cuticular waxes. The new compound was characterised using spectral and chromatographic techniques. The major component was found to be 16-hentriacontanone (palmitone), which constituted up to 48% of the total cuticular wax, together with a homologous series of hydrocarbons, fatty aldehydes, fatty alcohols, fatty acids and sterols as minor components. The antimicrobial activity of the isomeric hydroxy ketones was tested against selected Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains, and also some selected fungal strains, and compared with palmitone. The antibacterial activity of palmitone was significantly higher than that of the isomeric hydroxy ketones, but their antifungal activities were comparable. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 39. Cord blood diazepam: clinical effects in neonates of eclamptic mothers.

Abstract

Diazepam used in the treatment of eclampsia crosses the placental barrier readily, and may cause various clinical effects in the neonates. Twenty-five (25) live born babies of eclamptic mothers receiving diazepam were studied and cord blood diazepam concentration was estimated. Effect of low dose of diazepam is minimal apart from lowering of rectal temperature and the effects lasted for a period of 12 hours. But high dose (> 30 mg) of diazepam and prolonged duration of diazepam therapy in mothers causes significant depression of the newborn and the effects lasted for a period of 36-48 hours. As the clinical condition of the newborn is not related to the diazepam concentration in cord blood, the cord blood estimation is not helpful in the assessment of clinical effects of the drug in newborn.
