Background/Aim. Insufficient buccal bone thickness (thickness less than 2 mm) frequently leads to fenestration and dehiscence, and their consequences are additional bone resorption. That represents an additional problem during implant placement. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is becoming a priority in the diagnosis of bone thickness needed for implant placement since it has proven to be an accurate and largely reliable diagnostic tool in the image of morphology and buccal wall thickness. The aim of this study was to measure the vestibular bone thickness of the anterior maxillary region in the Serbian population and compare the difference between men and women, as well as between the left and right sides of the jaw. Methods. CBCT images of 68 patients were examined from the existing database. The length from the cementoenamel junction to the beginning of the alveolar bone was measured, followed by the thickness of the vestibular bone at various clinically relevant locations. The data were statistically processed and analyzed. Results. A total of 373 teeth of the frontal region of the upper jaw, including 128 central incisors, 124 lateral incisors, and 121 canines, were analyzed. The thickness of the buccal bone in more than 88% of cases was less than 1.5 mm at all reference points, with mean values from 0.72 to 1.02 mm. Conclusion. A very small number of maxillary teeth have a vestibular bone thickness greater than 2 mm; therefore, the criterion to provide at least 2 mm of thickness needed for implant placement is difficult to meet. That increases the use of auxiliary methods of bone augmentation during immediate implant placement.

Background/Aim. In the spirit of personalized medicine, determining caries biomarkers in the saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) attracts great attention in the current dental re-search. The concentration of GCF cytokines is illustrative in depicting the processes in tooth structures. Their relevance must be inspected with aspects of tooth position and caries lesion level. Different impacts of dental restoration materials on GCF IL-1β and TNF-α could be used as a parameter for estimating local inflammation. This paper aimed to estimate the concentrations of the proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-α) in the GCF and to correlate them with caries extension, tooth position, and different restorative biomaterials. Methods. GCF samples were collected from 90 periodontally healthy patients demonstrating at least one tooth with proximal caries and one intact tooth, at the baseline, 7 and 30-days post-treatment. The biomarkers’ profile was investigated in relation to different levels of caries extension (superficial, pulpitis, gangrenous, root affection), defect size, and restorative biomaterial. Results. Before therapy, caries level was significantly associated with GCF IL-1β concentration, demonstrating the lowest level in gangrenous (C4) and superficial caries (C2). Thirty days after therapy, root affection (C5) was characterized by the highest IL-1β concentration. Different dental fillings showed various GCF cytokine changes. CPC induced a significant IL-1β increase in more than 70% of treated patients. Caries lesion size was insignificantly associated with GCF levels of these proinflammatory cytokines, where larger defects were followed by an average cytokine increase. Considering the tooth position be-fore therapy, IL-1β had the highest level in GCF samples from caries-affected canines and second molars, while TNF-α showed the highest levels from canines GCF. Dental restoration induced cytokine increase in canines (IL-1β and TNF-α), 1st and 2nd molars GCF (IL-1β). Conclusion. Inflammation intensity of tooth structures was directly reflected in IL-1β and TNF-α concentrations. Dental restoration significantly affects IL-1β and TNF-α levels, depending on the used dental filling-type material. The profile of these cytokines varied in GCF samples of the tooth with different anatomical positions, where canines and molars demonstrated the highest level. An increase of these proinflammatory cytokines in the absence of any symptomatic manifestation of the inflammatory response can be considered as a possible tooth reparation parameter.

Background/Aim. Radiology is a crucial part of dentists’ everyday practice. It plays a vital role in diagnosis, treatment planning and the follow-up care of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the knowledge of dentists in Serbia concerning the use of radiology in pediatric dentistry. Methods. In total, 252 dentists from across Serbia participated in the study. A questionnaire was created in order to examine dentists’ knowledge about the use of radiology in pediatric dentistry. The questionnaire consisted of 39 questions. All questions were analyzed in SPSS 24 statistical software. Results. According to the results, 42.1% of dentists worked in private practice, 17.8% at University clinics and 40.1% in National Health Services. Out of total 252 respondents, only 82 (32.5%) had an x-ray unit. A total of 199 (79%) dentists replied they would diagnose early caries lesions only by inspection, but 30 (11.9%) dentists said they would make a diagnosis by doing both the inspection and taking a radiograph. The results show that 187 (74.2%) respondents said that they did not make an OPG for every patient. When asked about the disposal of radiological waste, 84.3% of dentists did not answer the question. Conclusion. Attempts should be made in order to upgrade and update Serbian dentists overall knowledge about the use of radiology in pediatric dentistry.

Introduction/Objective. Serbia has been burdened with one of the highest cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates in Europe. The objective of the study was to estimate the prevalence and factors associated with compliance to cervical cancer screening among women in the general population. Methods. The study used the data from 2013 National Health Survey of the population of Serbia. Logistic regression analysis was further used to examine demographic and socio-economic factors which affect the disparities in cervical cancer screening practices among the female population. Results. Every third woman (35.4%) has never done a Pap test in her lifetime. The highest percentage of respondents did their Pap tests after they were recommended by doctors (52.3%); 45% of women did it on their own initiative, and only 2.7% did it after they had been summoned to participate in an organized screening by their doctor. The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that the most important factors in women who had never undergone Pap tests were the following: age (being within the youngest or the oldest age group), rural residence and low level of education, poor socio-economic status, and marital status (have never married). Conclusion. Further strategies and interventions for improving cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates should be focused on socially and economically endangered population groups in order to reduce disparities in cervical cancer screening more effectively.

The aim of this study was to determine whether p-chloroaniline (PCA) is formed in the reactions of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) with final rinse chlorhexidine (CHX), QMix (combination of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), CHX and detergent) and EDTA/CHX solutions by thin-layer chromatography (TLC), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Commercially available 5.25% NaOCl solution was mixed with 2% CHX and QMix in 1:1 (v/v) ratio at room temperature. Furthermore, 2% CHX was associated with 17% EDTA under the same experimental conditions. The obtained solutions were evaluated qualitatively for color changing, precipitate and/or bubble formation and analyzed by TLC chromatography. The association products were investigated by spectroscopic (1H NMR and IR) methods in order to determine whether they contain PCA. It was found that interactions between NaOCl/CHX and CHX/EDTA led to forming of brown and white precipitate. When NaOCl was mixed with QMix, an orange-brown precipitate was formed. PCA was not detected as a product of the reactions between NaOCl and final rinse solutions of CHX, QMix and EDTA/CHX association.

Introduction/Objective. This study was aimed at evaluating dentin permeability after irrigation with sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and final rinse with chlorhexidine (CHX), ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) + CHX, and new combination products: QMiX or MTAD. Methods. Roots of 60 maxillary incisors were randomly divided into five groups (n = 12) before instrumentation and irrigation with NaOCl according to the final irrigation regimen: CHX (2% CHX), EDTA + CHX (17% EDTA + 2% CHX), QMiX, MTAD, and control group (distilled water). After final irrigation, ten roots of each group were horizontally sectioned and dye penetration was evaluated in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds. Remaining samples were subjected to scanning electron microscopy. Data were analyzed with ANOVA/Tukey’s test. Results. Less dye penetration was found in CHX group compared with control as well as with QMiX and MTAD group in all thirds (p < 0.05). A significant difference between the control and EDTA + CHX, QMiX or MTAD group was observed only in the apical root third (p < 0.05). Conclusion. Dentin permeability was significantly reduced after final irrigation with CHX, but not after use of other final irrigation solutions, except in the apical third of the root canal.

Introduction and aim: In recent decades, many factors such as smoking, unhealthy diet as well as high alcohol intake were marked as risk factors that can lead to increased incidence of malignant alterations, gingivitis, periodontal disease and other oral epithelium pathological changes. Having in mind that in the group of non-malignant and non-dental oral pathology gingivitis and periodontal disease are the most common oral mucosa alterations aim of our research was to investigate histomorphometric characteristics of healthy and altered oral and gingival epithelium. Material and methods: Tissue samples of 24 oral and gingival mucosa specimens were collected. Samples were fixed in 10% buffered paraformaldehyde, routinely processed and embedded in paraffin blocks. From each block sections 5 micrometer thin were made and standard H/E staining as well as immunocytochemical detection of Ki-67 proliferation marker and CD79a lymphocyte marker were performed. Measurements and image analysis was performed with Image Pro Plus software (Media Cybernetics, USA) and Axiovision (Ziess, USA). Results: We showed that inflamed gingival epithelium is increasing its thickness in proportion to the severity of adjacent inflammation. Furthermore, mitotic index is rising (up to 132%) in the same manner as well as basal lamina length (up to 70%) when normal and inflamed gingiva is compared. Background and purpose: An adequate diagnosis of a parotid gland enlargement is crucial for an appropriate treatment. The aim of the study was to evaluate effectiveness and minimal invasiveness of diagnostic procedures of core-needle biopsy. Materials and Methods: This study involved 67 patients, aged 40 to 90 years, with a tumor mass in the submandibular and parotid region. Method used for taking samples of pathological masses was BD Disposable guillotine spring-loaded needle for biopsies on soft tissues. Final diagnoses were established on the basis of surgical-pathological results in 67 cases, and on the basis of histopathological analysis of core-biopsy samples. Results: Compared with results of surgical biopsy, core-needle biopsy had sensitivity of 100% in differentiating benign from malignant lesions and in setting up an adequate diagnosis. Its positive predictive values were 100% in diagnosing malignancy. There were found 28 non-malignant and 39 malignant lesions with fewer disadvantages for patients.

Stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) can be used as a cell-based therapy in regenerative medicine and in immunomodulation. Pulp from human deciduous teeth can be stored as a source of SHED. Glass ionomer cements (GICs) are commonly used in restorative dentistry and in cavity lining. GICs have lower biocompatibility and are cytotoxic for dental pulp cells. In this study, seven commonly used GICs were tested for their cytotoxic effects on SHED, for their potential to arrest mitosis in cells and induce chromosome aberrations, and were compared with the effects of composite. Fuji II, Fuji VIII, Fuji IX, Fuji plus and Vitrebond had significantly higher cytotoxic effects on SHED than composite. Only SHEDs that have been treated with Fuji I, Fuji IX, Fuji plus and composite recovered the potential for proliferation, but no chromosome aberrations were found after treatment with GICs. The cytotoxic effects of GICs on SHEDs were in strong correlation with combined concentrations of released fluoride, aluminum and strontium ions. Fuji I exhibited the lowest activity towards SHEDs; it did not interrupt mitosis and did not induce chromosome aberrations, and was accompanied by the lowest levels of released F, Al and Sr ions. Introduction. Comprehensive epidemiological data regarding factors associated with traumatic dental injuries are scarce. Objective. The aim of the present study was to assess the frequency and analyze the factors associated with traumatic dental injuries in Serbian children. Methods. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has become a worldwide public health problem. It is estimated that nearly 90% of patients with chronic renal failure manifest some symptoms of oral disease. With advances in medical treatment, CKD patients are living longer and require oral care. Chronic kidney disease is often accompanied by disturbances in mineral metabolism which are classified as their own clinical entity known as CKD-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD). CKD-MBD affects all aspects of bone physiology: bone volume, bone turnover and bone mineralization. Jaw bones affected with CKD-MBD can have important clinical implications for the survival and osseointegration of dental implants, success of bone regeneration therapy, and increased risk of bone loss in patients with periodontitis or risk of bone fracture. Assessment of bone turnover is the most important diagnostic tool to monitor progression of CKD-MBD. Bone biomarkers and radiographical examination of bone density may be particularly useful to both, diagnosis and monitoring of bone turnover. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) as a reliable method with many advantages over other radiographic methods can be used for analysis of jaw bone micro-architectural changes and may be of a great help in bone quality determination in CKD-MBD.
