The wetland ecosystem (Haor) experiences recurrent flooding, which disrupts agricultural activities and impacts farmers' livelihoods annually. Addressing these challenges through integrated farming systems (IFSs) such as Crop ​+ ​Livestock ​+ ​Homestead-Agroforestry, Crop ​+ ​Livestock ​+ ​Fish farming, and Livestock ​+ ​Agroforestry is crucial. However, empirical evidence supporting the economic viability of specific IFSs remains limited. This study aimed to fill this gap by assessing the impact of IFSs on farmers' income and livelihoods in Sunamganj district, Bangladesh. Data from 312 participants collected before (2016) and after (2019) the project's intervention were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Farmers in this region readily adopted diverse IFSs, integrating crop cultivation, livestock rearing, vegetable production, agroforestry, fish farming, and open-water fish catching, ensuring efficient resource utilization across enterprises. Predominantly, farmers adopted the Crop ​+ ​Livestock ​+ ​Homestead–Agroforestry ​+ ​Open water fish catching system, which had a benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of 1.40, while the Livestock ​+ ​Homestead–Agroforestry ​+ ​Open water fish catching system demonstrated the highest BCR at 1.58, indicating economic viability. Mulching practice offers farmers an opportunity to minimize the effects of drought, water loss, and soil erosion on crop production. Plastic film is widely used as a mulching material; however, contamination of arable lands by residual plastic has become a serious concern. Synthetic biodegradable mulch films and sprays may offer a more sustainable alternative to plastic films, however current evidence on the factors that influence the suitability of these products for agricultural applications is fragmented, making it unclear under what conditions these products meet agronomic, environmental, and societal needs. We address this gap by conducting a systematic review of studies that evaluate the use of synthesized biodegradable mulch for agricultural applications and extract data from 151 primary studies on factors that directly and indirectly influence the suitability of its use. Like others, we find that using biodegradable mulches nearly always provides agronomic benefits over not mulching but rarely provides agronomic benefits over conventional plastic films. However, we also find that reported benefits vary across climate conditions, mulch type, and crop and agronomic factors tested, highlighting the context-specificity of biodegradable mulch benefits which is not yet well understood. In addition, we identify a need for studies that experimentally evaluate the secondary environmental and social benefits of biodegradable mulch use to provide a better understanding of the full potential of these products for sustainable agriculture.

The effect of the heat treatment and the water absorption of the glass-fiber and recycled cotton fabric-reinforced hybrid composites on the mechanical and physical characteristics were examined in the research. The heat treatment at 80 °C significantly improved G-C-G's tensile as well as flexural strengths by 21% and 28%, respectively. However, due to the improved bonding among the matrix and fiber, G-C-G layer fiber hybrid composites performed better mechanical characteristics than the other alternative composite layers. However, after water absorption, the tensile, and flexural strength of all types of composites diminished from the as-cast samples. In this instance, the flexural and tensile strengths of the G-C-G hybrid composites decreased by 12.87% and 19.11%, respectively, and the bonding between the fiber and matrix degraded was evaluated by SEM images. The maximum amount of water absorption (23.15%) is found for C–C–C composites due to the porosity presented in the cotton fiber. The study evaluated optimal ratios of glass fiber to cotton-reinforced composites, considering both practical and financial aspects. In this case, the G-G-G composites always show better mechanical properties, but the variation among the strength of G-G-G as well as G-C-G is marginal. G-C-G fiber-based hybrid materials are more acceptable because of their affordable cost as well as biodegradable properties than G-G-G composites. Cotton/glass fiber reinforced composites have been proposed as an alternative to appealing elements in the building, automotive, and textile industries.

Gas flaring, a common practice in many countries, has been associated with environmental and health concerns. A recent study in Bangladesh's largest gas field, Kailashtilla, assessed the influence of gas flaring on soil quality in the surrounding areas. Physical, chemical, and microbiological characteristics were assessed on soil samples collected from three union zones. Considerable influences have been found on soil quality, with several physical and chemical characteristics failing to meet the standards for healthy plant growth. Heavy metal contamination in the earth's soil was identified, specifically cadmium and lead, having a risk index indicating a moderate risk to the ecosystem in the future. Gas flaring also impacted the amount of bacteria in the soil, with the highest number being found farthest from the flaring zone. The soil was only marginally contaminated and potential health risks found. AAS and digestion methods were used to estimate the content of heavy metal contamination in the soil. To depict the geographically distributed abundance of heavy metals in the study area, the Kriging spatial interpolation procedure was utilized, and PCA and CA were used to assess the condition of soil. Findings indicate that particular gas flaring may have a deleterious influence on soil bacteria, which could have further consequences for the ecosystem. The study is likely to contribute to our understanding of the current state of soil's surrounding gas fields and serve as a platform for future research in this area emphasizing the necessity for sustainable energy methods and the importance of limiting environmental repercussions.

Neonatal seizures can lead to long-term neurodevelopmental problems. This study aims to identify predictors of poor developmental outcomes in neonates with seizures to aid in early intervention and referral for follow-up and rehabilitation.This observational study was conducted in the Department of Neonatology and Institute of Paediatric Neurodisorder and Autism, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University. Among 75 study cases of neonatal seizure, 23 died, and 46 were followed-up at 6 and 9 months after discharge. EEGs were performed on every patient. A comprehensive neurological examination and developmental evaluation were performed using Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development, Third Edition (Bayley III).Three-fourths of neonates were born at term (76.1 %), and over half were male (56.5 %). The majority were appropriate for gestational age (79.7 %) and had an average birth weight of 2607 ± 696 g (±SD). Over half of the neonates (52.2 %) had adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes, with global developmental delay being the most common. Recurrent seizures, the number of anticonvulsants needed to control seizures, and abnormal Electroencephalograms were identified as independent predictors of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes.The study highlights the need for early referral for follow-up and rehabilitation of neonates with seizures having abnormal electroencephalograms, recurrent seizures and requiring more anticonvulsants to control seizures.

Background: Moyamoya disease is a cerebrovascular arteriopathy of unknown origin characterized by progressive stenosis followed by occlusion of the cerebral arteries. Studies on moyamoya disease, especially in children in Bangladesh, are rare. We aimed to determine the clinical and neuroimaging features of moyamoya disease, particularly angiographic features. Methods: Forty children diagnosed with moyamoya disease were consecutively recruited from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Each patient underwent a medical history and physical examination focusing on stroke, magnetic resonance imaging, and magnetic resonance angiography scans of the brain. In some instances, electroencephalogram and digital subtraction angiography were also performed. Results: Of the 40 patients, 22 experienced their first-ever stroke (median age, 84 months), and 18 had recurrent strokes (median age, 90 months). Common symptoms included hemiparesis, headache, seizure, and speech disorder. The commonly affected vessels were the internal carotid and middle cerebral arteries. Cortical involvement was found in 82.5% of cases. Bilateral involvement was observed in 37.5% of the patients, most of whom were in the Suzuki stage III. Conclusion: Hemiparesis, headache, seizure, and speech disorder were the common manifestations. Most patients reported late (Suzuki stages III and IV), indicating an advanced stage. Early detection is necessary, considering the severity of the disease and its inherent tendency for recurrence.

Cumilla Sadar Dakshin region is highly diverse in respect to land types, topography, agro-ecology, land-use pattern, cropping systems and crop variability & variety. Agricultural development of the region largely depends on the reliable and comprehensive statistics of the existing cropping cultivation and its related system adopted by the farmers. To investigate the homestead vegetable production and its impact on family nutrition, food security, income generation as well as involvement of female members a survey study was conducted at Cumilla Sadar Dakshin during 2019. A total of 150 selected homesteads were surveyed for this purpose through developed questionnaire and focus group discussion. Both primary and secondary data has been collected from different sources to fulfill the objectives of the study. The results of this study indicated that the farmer’s age, marital status, education level, farm size, source of income, women participation etc. Farmer’s knowledge and farming experiences, perception and attitude differs on different demographic conditions like: age, sex, education, farm size, training which significantly influence the adoption of modern technologies provided by different organizations. The results also showed that women contribution in homestead vegetable production is high in medium farmer’s category 41.67% and low in small farmers 36.36% respectively. The highest number of total vegetables was produced by the medium farmer (63,732 kg/year) followed by small (39,445 kg/year) and marginal farmer (25,514 kg/year). This study provides some recommendation which might impacts on betterment of farmers’ occupational and socio-economic condition by establishing proper policy and legislation both in local and national level administration as well as agricultural extension.

Tea is the most consumed drink after water as well as is one of the prevalent and the cheapest beverage which consumed globally. Tea is considered a healthy beverage due to the presence of several antioxidants and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, calcium & manganese. Different kinds of teas are manufactured in different countries based on taste, habit and culture of the people. Normally, tea can be categorized into three groups: green tea (unfermented), Oolong tea (partially fermented) and black tea (fully fermented) based on tea processing. Tea is a rich source of polyphenols and now-a-days interest in the possible health benefits of polyphenols, particularly flavonoids, has increased owing to their antioxidant and free-radical scavenging abilities. The rising demand of tea is considered one of the significant components for the worldwide beverage market growth. Tea industry makes a vital contribution to the economy of the respective tea producing countries like China, Japan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Kenya etc. At the present time with the rising demand of tea it is needed to emphasize for exploring alternative means of increasing profits from tea cultivation. The tea market price is low in Different countries like Srilanka, India, Bangladesh, Kenya etc. comprises with high cost of production. For this reason, there is no alternatives rather than product diversification of tea through value addition which can be an important approach to mitigate the impacts of low market price and high production costs. This review broadly focuses on the issues leading to the development of wide range of tea and tea product diversification. This paper is also associated health benefits with different types of tea, nutraceutical beverage, confectionary items, toiletries and cosmeceuticals which being commercialized in different parts of the world which are gaining consumer acceptance and also face the challenges of global marketing by tea industries that’s are described in this paper.

Introduction: Copy number variations (CNVs) play a critical role in the pathogenesis of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) among children. In this study, we aim to identify clinically relevant CNVs, genes and their phenotypic characteristics in an ethnically underrepresented homogenous population of Bangladesh.Methods: We have conducted chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA) for 212 NDD patients with male to female ratio of 2.2:1.0 to identify rare CNVs. To identify candidate genes within the rare CNVs, gene constraint metrics [i.e., “Critical-Exon Genes (CEGs)”] were applied to the population data. Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2) was followed in a subset of 95 NDD patients to assess the severity of autism and all statistical tests were performed using the R package.Results: Of all the samples assayed, 12.26% (26/212) and 57.08% (121/212) patients carried pathogenic and variant of uncertain significance (VOUS) CNVs, respectively. While 2.83% (6/212) patients’ pathogenic CNVs were found to be located in the subtelomeric regions. Further burden test identified females are significant carriers of pathogenic CNVs compared to males (OR = 4.2; p = 0.0007). We have observed an increased number of Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) within cases with 23.85% (26/109) consanguineous parents. Our analyses on imprinting genes show, 36 LOH variants disrupting 69 unique imprinted genes and classified these variants as VOUS. ADOS-2 subset shows severe social communication deficit (p = 0.014) and overall ASD symptoms severity (p = 0.026) among the patients carrying duplication CNV compared to the CNV negative group. This cross-sectional study was carried out at the department of Pediatric Neurology, Institute of Pediatric Neurodisorder and Autism, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Dhaka with the aim to assess the relationship between gross motor function and MRI findings in children with cerebral palsy. The duration of the study was 12 months. All the cerebral palsy cases who met the selection criteria were enrolled. Detailed history taking and physical examination was done. The gross motor function of all cases was evaluated according to Gross Motor Function Classification System- Expanded and Revised (GMECS-E and R). Magnetic resonance imaging of brain was done in all enrolled patients and reports were evaluated. MRI findings were classified as maldevelopment, cortical and subcortical gray matter lesion, periventricular white matter injury, basal ganglia lesion, normal and other findings. A total of 45 children with cerebral palsy aged between 2 to 12 years were included in this study. Mean age of the children was 4.73 (+3.17) years. Male were 31 and female were 14 in number. Functionally majority patients were in GMFCS level IV (26.7%) and level V (20%). MRI findings were abnormal in 35 (77.78%) cases. Most common abnormal MRI finding was cortical and subcortical grey matter lesions 22 (48.9%). This study revealed that cortical and subcortical gray matter lesions were significantly associated with higher level of GMFCS (IV-V) (P=0.038) and maldevelopment of brain were also significantly associated with higher level of GMFCS (P=0.01). Normal MRI findings had significant association with mild to moderate GMFCS level (I-III) (P=0.012). From this study significant relationship was found between gross motor function and MRI of brain findings in children with cerebral palsy. Abstract Objective Etiological classification of infantile spasms syndrome (ISS) is important, considering the influence on prognosis based on the presence or absence of a known etiology. This study was performed to describe the limitations and difficulties experienced within the South Asian region when classifying the etiology of ISS according to the current recommendation. Method Data on healthcare indices and facilities related to management of ISS for the nine countries in the South Asian region were gathered by the South Asian West Syndrome Research Group. A Google survey was performed among three hundred and thirty pediatric neurologists in the region. The capacity within each country for investigating etiology of ISS according to current described benchmarks was evaluated. The difficulties experienced in this regard and the potential solutions were investigated. Results One hundred and sixty pediatric neurologists (response rate 48%) from Bangladesh (19/25), India (94/255), Myanmar (11/11), Nepal (6/8), Pakistan (19/25), and from Sri Lanka (7/8) responded. Three countries had no pediatric neurology services. Fifty‐six percent attempted to classify ISS etiology according to classification outlined by International League Against Epilepsy in 2017. The facilities to perform metabolic, genetic, and immunological investigations were very limited. Lack of funding for investigations and poor laboratory support were the two most frequent barriers encountered. Sixty percent indicated that a separate classification is suitable for low‐income setting; 78% suggested inclusion of separate category as “incompletely investigated” as an alternative solution to mitigate the barrier of achieving a better understanding of the etiological subtypes seen more frequently in this region. Significance The resources in South Asian region are limited to meet the recommendations for investigating etiology of ISS. Including the etiological subcategory “incompletely investigated” is proposed as an alternative to understand the true proportions of children in this region, with a definite known etiology and those with an unknown etiology.

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP), the first nuclear power plant in Bangladesh with a capacity of 2.4 GWe, is under construction on the bank of the river Padma, at Rooppur in Bangladesh. Measurement of background radioactivity in the natural environment adjacent to RNPP finds great importance for future perspectives. Soil and sediment samples collected from upstream and downstream positions of the Padma River (adjacent to RNPP) were collected and analyzed by HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry for primordial radionuclides. The average activity concentrations (in Bqkg−1) of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K radionuclides in soil samples were found to be 44.99 ± 3.89, 66.28 ± 6.55 and 553 ± 82.17 respectively. Respective values in sediment samples were found to be 44.59 ± 4.58, 67.64 ± 7.93, 782 ± 108. Relevant radiation hazard indices and dosimetric parameters were calculated and compared with the world average data recommended by US-EPA. Analytical results show non-negligible radiation hazards to the surrounding populace. Measured data will be useful to monitor any change of background radioactivity in the surrounding environment of RNPP following its operation for the generation of nuclear energy.

Background. Although the monkeypox virus-associated illness was previously confined to Africa, recently, it has started to spread across the globe and become a significant threat to human lives. Hence, this study was designed to identify the B and T cell epitopes and develop an epitope-based peptide vaccine against this virus’s cell surface binding protein through an in silico approach to combat monkeypox-associated diseases. Results. The analysis revealed that the cell surface binding protein of the monkeypox virus contains 30 B cell and 19 T cell epitopes within the given parameter. Among the T cell epitopes, epitope “ILFLMSQRY” was found to be one of the most potential peptide vaccine candidates. The docking analysis revealed an excellent binding affinity of this epitope with the human receptor HLA-B∗15:01 with a very low binding energy (-7.5 kcal/mol). Conclusion. The outcome of this research will aid the development of a T cell epitope-based peptide vaccine, and the discovered B and T cell epitopes will facilitate the creation of other epitope and multi-epitope-based vaccines in the future. This research will also serve as a basis for further in vitro and in vivo analysis to develop a vaccine that is effective against the monkeypox virus.

The present study was mainly an impact of farm and off-farm activities on household income and participation of rural women in the Thakurgaon district of Bangladesh. The specific aim was to compare the rural women's participation considering their socioeconomic characteristics, income contribution to household income, and its influencing factors. An Independent Sample T-test was used to compare socioeconomic differences. Pearson's correlation test was used to determine the relationship between women's personal income and household income. The propensity Score Matching (PSM) model was used for impact evaluation of off-farm activities. The result of the t-test showed that off-farm activities were significantly ahead for women from the farm women in terms of socioeconomic variables. There was positive and a strong correlation between women's personal income from off-farm activities and their household income. The result of PSM shows that off-farm activities have a positive and significant impact on rural women's income. Estimation of the binary Probit model and marginal effects of related explanatory variables revealed that educational status, family size, work experiences, personal income, saving, and training, significantly affected rural women's involvement in off-farm activities. Therefore, to increase the pace of work, the participation of rural women in off-farm activities needs to be made more effective and efficient, for which government and non-government organizations need to take necessary steps in area-based development (such as work environment, credit facilities, communication, infrastructure, etc.).

Single and mixed-halide perovskite solar cells have attracted much research attention in recent years due to the conditions of low-cost thin film solar cell technology. For this current research, perovskite materials CH3NH3PbCl3, CH3NH3PbI2Cl, CH3NH3PbICl2, and CH3NH3PbI3 have been synthesized and deposited on clean glass substrates by spin coating process. The structural and morphological properties of the prepared thin films have been studied by X-ray diffraction and Scanning electron microscopy. All the perovskite showed fine crystallinity, possessing a tetragonal phase. The average crystallite sizes of the prepared samples are obtained to be 20.77 nm, 30.18 nm, 31.11 nm, and 42.23 nm, respectively. The lattice strain decreased with increasing crystallite size. A drastic change was observed in the morphological properties of the perovskites. The perovskite grains change from microrods to microcube by substituting iodine with chlorine ions.

With telehealth services rescuing patients with chronic neurological disorders during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a need for simplified teleneurology protocols for neurological disorders in children. Infantile spasms is an epileptic encephalopathy where treatment lag is a significant predictor of outcome. It is one such condition where telemedicine can make a remarkable difference when in-person consultations are delayed or are not possible. However, the adverse effect profile of the first-line therapeutic options, the need for frequent follow-up, underdeveloped telemedicine services, lack of a rational protocol, poor awareness about infantile spasms, a lesser level of parental understanding, and scarcity of pediatric neurologists are the major hurdles in developing countries. This paper provides a teleneurology based approach for the management of infantile spasms in developing countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. The cornerstones of this approach include the fundamental principles of management of infantile spasms, decentralization of patient care to local health providers, efforts for improving sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis, early initiation of first-line therapeutic options, and constant motivation of parents and local health providers to be vigilant for therapeutic response, adverse effects of therapy, and infections.

Background: Diabetes is a common medical complication during pregnancy that results in significant neonatal morbidities. In infants of diabetic mothers (IDMs), hypoglycemia is a common complication. Objective: To study the neonatal hypoglycemia in IDMs in a tertiary care hospital. Settings and Design: A cross-sectional study was done in postnatal ward in Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetic, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders from January to December 2009. Subjects and Methods: The data of IDMs were collected from postnatal ward. All IDMs delivered during this period staying in postnatal ward were included in this study. The outcomes were compared between the hypoglycemic and normoglycemic IDMs and between gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and pre-GDM in hypoglycemic group using Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. The data analysis was performed with Epi-enfo7 software. Statistical significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: A total of 363 IDMs were included in this study. Hypoglycemia developed in 38.3% IDMs and 43.2% mothers of hypoglycemic IDMs had GDM and 56.8% had pre-GDM. Duration of maternal diabetes (P = 0.04) and large for gestational age (P = 0.0001) were associated with hypoglycemia. Multigravidae (82.2% vs 68.3%, P = 0.03), prolonged duration of maternal diabetes (45.46 weeks vs 3.23 weeks, P = 0.00001), preterm babies (48.1% vs 28.3% P = 0.009), and control of diabetes by insulin (81% vs 46.7%, P = 0.001) were more in pre-GDM, and statistically significant. About 85% IDMs developed hypoglycemia within 6 h of birth (P-value 0.00001) and majority (68%) were at 2 h of age. Forty percent of hypoglycemic IDMs from postnatal ward were admitted in special care baby unit. Conclusion: Hypoglycemia observed in 38.3% IDMs and developed within 6 h of age and maximum were at 2 h. Early recognition and appropriate intervention are needed in IDMs.

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder that includes deficits in social communication and interaction, and restricted and repetitive behaviours, interests, or activities. This survey was done to assess autism spectrum disorder prevalence in 16- to 30-month-old children at an urban-rural distribution and determine the association of socioeconomic and demographic conditions. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted in 30 districts of Bangladesh. Three-stage cluster sampling was used with 'Red Flag', Modified Checklist for Toddlers and "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition," respectively. Data editing and analysis were done using CSPro 6 and SPSS 23. The survey included 37,982 households (71% rural, 29% urban) with 38,440 children. 'Red Flag' was positive in 209/10,000 children. Modified Checklist for Toddlers was positive in 149/10,000 children. "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition"--positive autism spectrum disorder prevalence was 17/10,000 young children (boys 24/10,000, girls 9.8/10,000). Prevalence was higher in urban than rural (25/10,000 and 14/10,000 respectively). It was 77/10,000 in mothers aged 35-39 years and 23/10,000 in children of fathers aged 40 years. For families within the lowest wealth quintile, the autism spectrum disorder prevalence was 15/10,000. Autism spectrum disorder at very young ages in Bangladesh is still low. It was higher in urban areas, with the advanced age of parents, especially mothers, and in families with higher wealth quintiles.

Tuberculosis may present with variable symptoms and signs, sometimes presentations are unusual. An eight year old boy was admitted with the complaints of low grade fever, weight loss, abdominal pain, hematochezia and polyarthritis. Colonic biopsy was suggestive of tuberculosis and Gene-Xpart of sputum showed of multidrug resistant tuberculosis. We are reporting a case presented with hematochezia and poloyarthritis, an unusual presentation who was subsequently diagnosed as a case of multi drug resistant intestinal tuberculosis.

Background Brain abscesses are a major health problem with significant morbidity and mortality rates. The objective of this study was to compare the surgical efficacy of endoscope-assisted evacuation of a brain abscess with that of single burr hole aspiration in a tertiary health care center. Methods This single-center nonrandomized clinical study was conducted during the period from July 2020 to December 2021. Male and female patients younger than 30 years who presented with brain abscess were enrolled in this study. They were divided into two groups and treated with two different techniques: conventional burr hole aspiration group and endoscope-assisted evacuation group. Results Thirty patients were enrolled in this study. The mean age was 13.0 ± 6.3 years in the burr hole group and 13.1 ± 6.4 years in the endoscope-assisted group. There was ≥75.0% evacuation of brain abscess on postoperative day 1 in 13 (92.9%) patients in the endoscope-assisted group and in 5 (33.3%) patients in the burr hole group. The mortality rate was 6.7% in both groups. The mean residual volume on postoperative day 30 was 0.75 mL in the endoscope-assisted group and 1.75 mL in the burr hole aspiration group. No patients treated with endoscope-assisted evacuation required a repeat surgery, whereas five patients (33.3%) treated with the conventional burr hole method required a repeat surgery. Conclusions This study showed that the endoscope-assisted procedure has a better rate of abscess evacuation, lower residual risk, and less chance of repeat surgeries than the conventional burr hole procedure.
