Na-ion batteries (SIBs) require novel anode materials which have high ion storage capability and low working voltage to make SIBs competitive compared to Li-ion batteries (LIBs). From this perspective, we present the origin of improved electrochemical performances of phosphate doped hard carbon (P-HC) which can meet the two requirements mentioned above through combining experiment with the calculations of atomic/electronic structures. We disclosed that the capacity enhancement is accompanied by the changed voltage profile, which results from the introduced phosphate functional groups. The emerged redox peak turned out to be generated by the electrochemical reaction of Na ions near the phosphate-carbon environment. First-principles calculations elaborated that the phosphate introduction here generates electron holes near the Fermi level that is generally considered as evidence of p-type semiconductors to improve electronic conductivity. This expectation has been proven by comparatively measuring the electrical conductivities of pristine hard carbon and P-HC. A close investigation into charge distribution indicated that the electron hole is generated mainly by the higher reducibility of the doped phosphate than the surrounding carbon atoms in P-HC. This discovery well explains the underlying principles for the enhanced electrochemical performance of P-HC, thereby showing a way to design highly functional hard carbon structures toward higher capacity with Na ions.

In high-capacity layered oxide cathode materials, utilization of lattice oxygen as a redox center is considered to be one of the most promising approaches to overcome the capacity limitation set by conventional transition metal redox centers. However, rapid material degradation is often associated with oxygen oxidation, leading to formidable challenges in utilizing oxygen redox. Further mechanistic understanding of the oxygen activities thus becomes critical to better control oxygen redox reactions. This review summarizes recent advances for investigating oxygen redox reactions in cathode materials from a multiscale perspective, i.e., from the atomistic level to the microstructure regime. First the mechanistic aspects of oxygen redox and the consequences of this reaction on various electrode degradation pathways during battery operation (e.g., oxygen loss, transition metal migration, irreversible phase transition), relating structural changes at the crystallographic scale to those at the macro scale, are discussed. Then recent developments based on atomic and microstructure modifications that are promising for improving the reversibility of oxygen redox reaction or mitigating the harmful processes arising from oxidation of the oxygen centers under high operating voltage are recounted. The analysis is concluded with a commentary on further research directions toward optimizing the oxygen activity for high-capacity charge storage.

Layered transition-metal oxides have attracted intensive interest for cathode materials of sodium-ion batteries. However, they are hindered by the limited capacity and inferior phase transition due to the gliding of transition-metal layers upon Na+ extraction and insertion in the cathode materials. Here, we report that the large-sized K+ is riveted in the prismatic Na+ sites of P2-Na0.612K0.056MnO2 to enable more thermodynamically favorable Na+ vacancies. The Mn-O bonds are reinforced to reduce phase transition during charge and discharge. 0.901 Na+ per formula are reversibly extracted and inserted, in which only the two-phase transition of P2 ↔ P'2 occurs at low voltages. It exhibits the highest specific capacity of 240.5 mAh g-1 and energy density of 654 Wh kg-1 based on the redox of Mn3+/Mn4+, and a capacity retention of 98.2% after 100 cycles. This investigation will shed lights on the tuneable chemical environments of transition-metal oxides for advanced cathode materials and promote the development of sodium-ion batteries.

However, conventional electrode materials without overlithiation remain the most practical. Typically, cationic redox reactions are believed to dominate the electrochemical processes in conventional electrodes. Herein, we show unambiguous evidence of reversible anionic redox reactions in LiNi1/3 Co1/3 Mn1/3 O2 . The typical involvement of oxygen through hybridization with transition metals is discussed, as well as the intrinsic oxygen redox process at high potentials, which is 75 % reversible during initial cycling and 63 % retained after 10 cycles. Our results clarify the reaction mechanism at high potentials in conventional layered electrodes involving both cationic and anionic reactions and indicate the potential of utilizing reversible oxygen redox reactions in conventional layered oxides for high-capacity lithium-ion batteries.

Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) reflect a strategic move for scalable and sustainable energy storage. The focus on high‐entropy (HE) cathode materials, particularly layered oxides, has ignited scientific interest due to the unique characteristics and effects to tackle their shortcomings, such as inferior structural stability, sluggish reaction kinetics, severe Jahn‐Teller effects induced lattice distortion, and poor oxygen reversibility at high voltage. This review focuses on high‐entropy oxide materials, highlighting their fundamentals, design principles, and application in layered oxide cathodes for SIBs. It delves into the growth mechanism, composition‐properties correlations, and the functional roles of high‐entropy design in enhancing the performance of layered oxide cathodes. Furthermore, it furnishes a comprehensive survey of recent advancements and persisting challenges within the domain of layered high‐entropy cathode materials, as well as offers insights into potential future research directions in line with the current state of knowledge.
