The Na-metal-free manufacturing approach can improve both the manufacturing and performance of Na metal solid-state batteries. While significant research has been dedicated to Li-metal-free manufacturing, the exploration of Na-based counterparts remains relatively nascent. Similar to Li-metal-free manufacturing, achieving uniform Na deposition remains a challenge when using a solid-state electrolyte. In this work, we demonstrated the ability to plate a uniform 2.0 mAh cm-2 Na metal anode by the simple placement of an Al foil-based current collector on NASICON solid-state electrolyte. The Na anode uniformity was dramatically improved by functionalizing the Al CC with a ∼96 nm thick layer of Au. It was shown that the in situ plated Na is homogeneous and dense and can be reversibly stripped and plated at a Coulombic efficiency of >90%. Our findings advance the understanding of Na nucleation and growth and offer insights into streamlining manufacturing processes for future all-solid-state Na anodes.

Background: Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) have a remarkable ability to absorb significant quantities of water. However, their absorption capacity is significantly reduced when exposed to saline solutions, such as urine, due to the polyelectrolyte effect and charge screening. Methods: In this study, we demonstrate a zwitterionic superabsorbent polymer (ZSAP) with excellent salt-water absorption and retention capacities. ZSAP was synthesized by grafting a copolymer of p(sulfobetaine methacrylate-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (p(SBMA-co-HEMA)) onto an acrylic acid (AA)-based hydrogel via free-radical polymerization. The introduction of zwitterionic SBMA significantly enhances the hydrophilicity of the polymer, particularly in a saline solution due to the anti-polyelectrolyte effect, thereby accelerating the rate of salt absorption. Additionally, the hydroxyl groups from HEMA facilitate the formation of covalent bonds with the AA network membrane through esterification, effectively mitigating polymer leaching. The hydration/dehydration behaviors of linear polymers were measured using the dynamic vapor sorption (DVS) method. Moreover, the salt-water absorption capacity, centrifuge retention capacity (CRC), and absorbency under load (AUL) of ZSAP with various SBMA moieties and copolymer dosages were comprehensively evaluated in a 0.9 wt% sodium chloride solution. Additionally, the water retention under different temperatures and polymer leaching of ZSAP were investigated. Significant Findings: The copolymer p(SBMA-co-HEMA) not only demonstrates a high salt-water absorption rate at 90% RH in a 0.9 wt% NaCl solution but also exhibits superior water retention at 0% RH compared to the AA polymer. Moreover, the ZSAP exhibits superior salt-water absorption capacity and AUL in a 0.9 wt% NaCl solution compared to conventional AA-based SAP. Additionally, the introduction of the hydroxyl moiety from the p(SBMA-co-HEMA) copolymer reduces free polymer leaching from ZSAP. This work presents an approach for the development of new SAP with high salt-water absorption and retention.

Abstract Various craniofacial syndromes cause skeletal malformations and are accompanied by neurological abnormalities at different levels, leading to tremendous biomedical, financial, social, and psychological burdens. Accumulating evidence highlights the importance of identifying and characterizing the genetic basis that synchronously modulates musculoskeletal and neurobehavioral development and function. Particularly, previous studies from different groups have suggested that neural EGFL-like-1 (Nell-1), a well-established osteochondrogenic inducer whose biopotency was initially identified in the craniofacial tissues, may also play a vital role in the central nervous system, particularly regarding neurological disorder pathologies. To provide first-hand behavior evidence if Nell-1 also has a role in central nervous system abnormalities, we compared the Nell-1-haploinsufficient (Nell-1 +/6R ) mice with their wild-type counterparts regarding their repetitive, social communication, anxiety-related, locomotor, sensory processing-related, motor coordination, and Pavlovian learning and memory behaviors, as well as their hippocampus transcriptional profile. Interestingly, Nell-1 +/6R mice demonstrated core autism spectrum disorder-like deficits, which could be corrected by Risperidone, an FDA-approved anti-autism, anti-bipolar medicine. Besides, transcriptomic analyses identified 269 differential expressed genes, as well as significantly shifted alternative splicing of ubiquitin B pseudogene Gm1821, in the Nell-1 +/6R mouse hippocampus, which confirmed that Nell-1 plays a role in neurodevelopment. Therefore, the current study verifies that Nell-1 regulates neurological development and function for the first time. Moreover, this study opens new avenues for understanding and treating craniofacial patients suffering from skeletal deformities and behavior, memory, and cognition difficulties by uncovering a novel bone-brain-crosstalk network. Furthermore, the transcriptomic analysis provides the first insight into deciphering the mechanism of Nell-1 in neurodevelopment.

Abstract Microgravity-induced bone loss results in a 1% bone mineral density loss monthly and can be a mission critical factor in long-duration spaceflight. Biomolecular therapies with dual osteogenic and anti-resorptive functions are promising for treating extreme osteoporosis. We previously confirmed that NELL-like molecule-1 (NELL-1) is crucial for bone density maintenance. We further PEGylated NELL-1 (NELL-polyethylene glycol, or NELL-PEG) to increase systemic delivery half-life from 5.5 to 15.5 h. In this study, we used a bio-inert bisphosphonate (BP) moiety to chemically engineer NELL-PEG into BP-NELL-PEG and specifically target bone tissues. We found conjugation with BP improved hydroxyapatite (HA) binding and protein stability of NELL-PEG while preserving NELL-1’s osteogenicity in vitro. Furthermore, BP-NELL-PEG showed superior in vivo bone specificity without observable pathology in liver, spleen, lungs, brain, heart, muscles, or ovaries of mice. Finally, we tested BP-NELL-PEG through spaceflight exposure onboard the International Space Station (ISS) at maximal animal capacity (n = 40) in a long-term (9 week) osteoporosis therapeutic study and found that BP-NELL-PEG significantly increased bone formation in flight and ground control mice without obvious adverse health effects. Our results highlight BP-NELL-PEG as a promising therapeutic to mitigate extreme bone loss from long-duration microgravity exposure and musculoskeletal degeneration on Earth, especially when resistance training is not possible due to incapacity (e.g., bone fracture, stroke).

Due to the improvement of national consumption levels, the Guizhou tourism industry plays an increasingly important role in the economy of Guizhou province, and the proportion of tourism revenue to GDP is increasing. We combine the improved FOA algorithm with an echo-state network, taking into account the characteristics of Guizhou tourism demand, to construct an AFOA-ESN prediction model for Guizhou tourism demand. The new algorithm fixes the problems with the old Drosophila algorithm by changing the number of Drosophila populations, the size of the search step, and the best place for the first iteration. This makes the new algorithm better at local searches and more efficient. We select the annual data on the number of travelers to Guizhou from ten provinces as the dataset and apply the simulation analysis method to test the effectiveness of the previously mentioned prediction model. The data show that among the ten sets of experiments, the AFOA-ESN prediction model has seven times the smallest MAPE value, while the AFOA-ESN model has six times the smallest MSE value. In addition, the consumption structure of Guizhou tourism tourists from 2010 to 2022 did not change much in this stage, showing the development of shock, sensitivity, and vulnerability. Based on the analysis results, we propose the tourism marketing strategy of “Ethnicity + Folklore + Folk Lodging.” This study selects forecast information suitable for the tourism industry and provides the necessary reference for decision-making in tourism-related departments.

Abstract Background Helicobacter pylori (HP) eradication therapy (HPE) is recommended for patients with unexplained immune thrombocytopenia (ITP); however, the role of HPE in preventing ITP in patients with HP infection remains unclear. Therefore, this study was designed to clarify it. Methods This study was conducted at a tertiary medical center and included all adult patients with HP infection between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2018. We compared the risk of developing ITP between patients with and without HPE. All patients were followed up until December 31, 2020. Results After excluding patients with thrombocytopenia, 1995 adult patients with HP infection, including 1188 patients with HPE and 807 patients without HPE, were included in this study. The mean age of the patients with HPE was 57.9 years, whereas that of those without HPE was 61.6 years. The percentage of males was 56% in patients with HPE and 59% in those without HPE. Patients without HPE had a higher risk of ITP than those with HPE after adjusting for age, sex, the Charlson Comorbidity Index, and comorbidities [adjusted odds ratio (OR) 1.76; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.16–2.68]. Stratified analyses showed that the higher risk was found only in males (adjusted OR: 1.70; 95% CI 1.03–2.80). In addition to HPE, male sex and anemia were independent predictors of ITP in patients with HP infection. Conclusion This study showed that adult patients with HP infection not receiving HPE had a higher risk of developing ITP. We suggest that HPE should be considered, particularly in males and those who have anemia, to prevent ITP.
