14. Application of deep metric learning in the verification process of wheel design similarity: Hyundai motor company case.

Abstract

The global automobile market experiences quick changes in design preferences. In response to the demand shifts, manufacturers now try to apply new technologies to bring a novel design to market faster. In this paper, we introduce a novel AI application that performs a similarity verification task of wheel designs that aims to solve the real‐world problem. Through the deep metric learning approach, we empirically prove that the cross‐entropy loss does similar tasks as the pairwise losses do in the embedding space. On Jan 2022, we successfully transitioned the verification system to the wheel design process of Hyundai Motor Company's design team and shortened the verification time by 90% to a maximum of 10 min. With a few clicks, the designers at Hyundai Motor could take advantage of our verification system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Rationale: Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is one of the most common glomerular diseases, leading to end-stage renal disease. Among the 5 variants of FSGS, the collapsing variant is rare and has the worst prognosis. Solid and hematologic malignancies are associated with glomerular diseases, such as membranous nephropathy, minimal change disease, and FSGS. However, squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity is rarely associated with nephrotic syndrome, especially FSGS. Patient concerns: A 55-year-old woman diagnosed with oral cavity cancer presented with generalized edema with heavy proteinuria and renal dysfunction after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and wide surgical excision. Diagnosis: Renal biopsy shows segmental or global collapse of glomerular capillaries with marked hyperplasia and swelling of overlying epithelial cells, suggesting a collapsing variant of FSGS. Interventions: After the renal biopsy, we prescribed oral prednisolone at a dose of 1 mg/kg/day. Despite immunosuppressive treatment, renal function deteriorated, and hemodialysis was started. Outcomes: After 23 sessions of hemodialysis and high-dose oral glucocorticoid treatment, renal function gradually improved, and oral glucocorticoid therapy was discontinued after 8 months. Currently, this patient is in a cancer-free state and has normal renal function without proteinuria. Lessons: Unusual collapsing FSGS might be associated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy and wide surgical excision in patients with oral cavity cancer. Proper diagnostic workup, such as renal biopsy and high-dose glucocorticoid therapy, might have helped recover from nephrotic syndrome and acute renal injury in cancer patients.

31. Peritubular capillary preservation with COMP-angiopoietin-1 decreases ischemia-reperfusion-induced acute kidney injury

Abstract

Ischemia followed by reperfusion induces microvascular endothelial cell injury, leading to the loss of functions such as regulation of vascular tone, tissue perfusion, permeability, and inflammation in kidney. Improvement of this endothelial dysfunction could be a good approach to treating ischemia-reperfusion-induced renal injury. Cartilage oligomeric matrix protein-angiopoietin-1 (COMP-Angl) is a variant of native angiogenic factor angiopoietin-I engineered to have higher activity. We evaluated the protective effect of COMP-Angl in an ischemia-reperfusion renal injury model. COMP-Angl preserved renal peritubular capillaries after ischemia-reperfusion injury without recruiting pericytes. Pretreatment with COMP-Ang 1 attenuated the increase of blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels after ischemiareperfusion. In addition, the morphological examination indicated less tubular injury in mice pretreated with COMP-Angl than in those treated with the vehicle. COMP-Ang 1 treatment reduced the increase in the number of Gr-l-positive neutrophils or ER-HR3-positive macrophages infiltrating kidneys, increased phosphorylation of Akt, and preserved renal tissue perfusion flow and microvascular permeability. Furthermore, COMP-Ang 1 decreased renal interstitial fibrosis 30 days after the ischemia-reperfusion injury.
