We perform a systematic simulation study of energetic passing particle-driven instabilities in KSTAR using the kinetic-MHD hybrid code M3D-K. Linear simulation results show that the observed n = 1 mode in the early phase of the discharge is the low-frequency fishbone driven by energetic passing beam ions. The mode frequency computed is in a good agreement with the experimental measurement. Nonlinear simulations show that the frequency of the n = 1 mode jumps up to a higher value corresponding to the β -induced Alfvén eigenmode (BAE). In the later phase of the discharge, the simulated n = 5 mode is identified as a BAE in its linear phase. In the nonlinear phase, the n = 5 mode exhibits a similar frequency jump to a higher value of an energetic particle (EP) mode after mode saturation. Analysis of perturbed beam ion distributions in phase space shows that these new modes in nonlinear stages are driven by new resonances due to nonlinearly evolved beam ion distributions. Further simulations of a beam beta scan for the n = 5 mode show that the frequency jump disappears for a sufficiently small beam beta or beam ion drive. This result may explain the non-existence of frequency jump in the experiment. Finally, the impact of toroidal rotation on mode characteristics is investigated, showing that it has a marginal influence on EP driven modes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The toroidal single-fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code MARS-F (Liu et al 2000 Phys. Plasmas 7 3681) and the MHD-kinetic hybrid code MARS-K (Liu et al 2008 Phys. Plasmas 15 112503) are utilized to study the plasma response to the n = 1 (n is the toroidal mode number) resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP), applied to suppress the type-I edge localized mode (ELM) in a KSTAR discharge. Both the resistive-rotating and ideal-static plasma models identify strong screening of the resonant radial field harmonics of the applied RMP due to the plasma response, and predict a strong edge-peeling response of the plasma which is consistent with the optimal ELM control coil current configuration adopted in experiment. The RMP-induced radial displacement of the plasma, computed by the resistive-rotating plasma model, agrees reasonably well with that reconstructed from the measured data in the plasma core. Taking into account the drift kinetic response of fast ions, MARS-K hybrid modeling also finds quantitative agreement of the plasma core fluid pressure perturbation with experiment. Based on the MARS-F computed plasma response, a guiding-center orbit-tracing simulation finds about 0.3% of fast ion losses due the n = 1 RMP in the KSTAR ELM control experiment considered. Most losses are associated with counter-current fast ions located near the plasma edge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PHENIX has performed an extensive study on the evolution of medium effects from small to large systems. PHENIX has continued searching for Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) in small systems by measuring collectivity, modification of light hadron and quarkonia production, and jet substructure. In large systems, detailed studies on the property of the QGP have been done using direct photon, $\pi^{0}$-hadron correlation, heavy-flavor electron, and $J/\psi$ flow with a large statistics of data collected in 2014. This report covers new results from the PHENIX experiment in various collision systems., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, Quark Matter 2022 proceedings

A simple and rapid liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for Enalapril in human plasma was developed and applied to pharmacokinetic and bioequivalence test for 2 formulations of Enalapril (10 mg) capsules in healthy korean volunteers under fasting state. The analytes were extracted from plasma by simple protein precipitation by acetonitrile, separated on YMC C8 column using methanol-- 10 mM ammonium formate (80 : 20, v/v) as the mobile phase, and detected by tandem mass spectrometry with Turbo IonSpray interface operating in the positive ion mode for Enalapril and Glibenclamide (IS) in MRM mode. The ionization was optimized using electro-spray ionization (ESI) (+) and selectivity was achieved by MS/MS analysis, m/z 376.447 [right arrow] 234.1 for Enalapril and m/z 494.1 [right arrow] 369.1 for IS. The assay exhibited good linearity in the concentration ranges of 1.0 ~ 300 ng/mL for Enalapril in human plasma with lower limit of quantification (LLOQ) of 1.0 ng/mL. The chromatographic run time was approximately 2.0 min. No endogenous compounds were found to interfere with the analysis. The accuracy and precision were acceptable for concentrations over the standard ranges. The method was successfully applied to pharmacokinetic (PK) and bioequivalence (BE) studies by determination of Enalapril in the blood sample taken up to 12 h after oral administration of two Enalapril (10 mg) formulations and results from PK analysis suggested that the 2 types of 10 mg Enalapril tablets should be considered to be bioequivalent for both the extent and rate of absorption in normal volunteers. - Abstract
Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: Given that new therapeutic options for spinocerebellar ataxias are on the horizon, there is a need for markers that reflect disease-related alterations, in particular, in the preataxic stage, in which clinical scales are lacking sensitivity. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to quantify regional brain volumes and upper cervical spinal cord areas in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 in vivo across the entire time course of the disease. METHODS: We applied a brain segmentation approach that included a lobular subsegmentation of the cerebellum to magnetic resonance images of 210 ataxic and 48 preataxic spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 mutation carriers and 63 healthy controls. In addition, cervical cord cross-sectional areas were determined at 2 levels. RESULTS: The metrics of cervical spinal cord segments C3 and C2, medulla oblongata, pons, and pallidum, and the cerebellar anterior lobe were reduced in preataxic mutation carriers compared with controls. Those of cervical spinal cord segments C2 and C3, medulla oblongata, pons, midbrain, cerebellar lobules crus II and X, cerebellar white matter, and pallidum were reduced in ataxic compared with nonataxic carriers. Of all metrics studied, pontine volume showed the steepest decline across the disease course. It covaried with ataxia severity, CAG repeat length, and age. The multivariate model derived from this analysis explained 46.33% of the variance of pontine volume. CONCLUSION: Regional brain and spinal cord tissue loss in spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 starts before ataxia onset. Pontine volume appears to be the most promising imaging biomarker candidate for interventional trials that aim at slowing the progression of spinocerebellar ataxia type 3. © 2021 The Authors. We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au+Au, d+Au, and p+p collisions, for direct photon pT from 5–12 GeV/c, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in d+Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au+Au compared to p+p and d+Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au+Au increases to an excess over the yield in p+p collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron pT and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Comparison to theoretical calculations suggests that the hadron excess arises from medium response to energy deposited by jets.

The article examines the current and voltage characteristics upon quench under a fault for a BSCCO2212 superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). Results suggest that the energy absorbed during five cycles by the SFCL module is 38.9 kW, by high temperature superconducting (HTS) component is 5.4 kW and by the shunt coil is 33.5 kW.

A tracking detector using scintillating fibers is being developed for the D0 collaboration at Fermilab. The scintillating fibers will be coupled to clear fibers that will transport light to the photodetectors. We have developed connectors which couple the two types of fibers. The first 128-channel prototypes were machined using Delrin plastic to have v-shaped grooves. Fibers were glued into the grooves and their ends were finished with diamond fly-cut tools. Mating connectors were optically coupled by optical grease. Using a green light-emitting diode and a silicon photodiode, we measured average light transmission between 97% and 99%. Later versions of the v-groove connectors were made of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene plastic by injection molding.

Photon detectors -- Evaluation ,Cosmic rays -- Research ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
We report on results of a cosmic ray test of a scintillating fiber tracker using Visible Light Photon Counter (VLPC) readout. Two different detector configurations have been constructed and operated, the first with a total of 3,072 channels and the second with 1,785 channels. The 3,072 channel system is a prototype for the DO detector tracking upgrade and represents a configuration that is similar to that in the final detector. The second, smaller test was specifically designed to study the position resolution capabilities of the fiber tracker. A description of the cosmic ray test including trigger, fiber configuration, undoped lightguides, VLPC cassettes and cryogenics, and calibration system is given. Final results from the 3,072 channel test will be presented, including measurements of resolution, light yield per minimum ionizing particle, singlet and doublet efficiency, and long-term stability. Resolution results from the second, 1,785 channel test will be compared to the predicted resolution from Monte Carlo studies.

The valence states and electronic structures of transition-metal ions in spinel [Fe.sub.1-x][Cu.sub.x] [Cr.sub.2] [S.sub.4] (0.1 [less than or equal to] x [less than or equal to] 0.5) have been investigated by using scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM), photoemission spectroscopy (PES), soft-X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The experimental data have been compared to the calculated density of states (DOS). It is found that the valence states of Cr and Cu ions are nearly trivalent ([Cr.sup.3+]) and monovalent ([Cu.sup.+]), respectively. The Fe 2p XAS spectra of [Fe.sub.1-x][Cu.sub.2][Cr.sub.2] [S.sub.4] are very similar to that of Fe metal, indicating that Fe 3d states are strongly hybridized to S 3p states. The XMCD measurements for Fe, Cr, and Cu 2p states show evidence that the magnetic moments of Cr ions are antiparallel to those of Fe ions and that Cu ions are weakly polarized parallel to Fe ions. Valence-band PES reveals that Cr 3d states are located at ~ -1.5 eV, while Fe 3d states are very broad, in agreement with the calculated DOS. This study indicates that the minority-spin [e.sub.g] states of Fe 3d electrons are located very close to EF, suggesting that the hybridized Fe [e.sub.g]-S 3p states near EF play an important role in determining the transport properties of [Fe.sub.1]-x [Cu.sub.x[Cr.sub.2][S.sub.4] for x [less than oe equal to] 0.5. Index Terms--Fe[Cr.sub.2][S.sub.4], [Fe.sub.0.5][Cu.sub.0.5][Cr.sub.2] [S.sub.4], photoemission spectroscopy (PES), scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM), spinel, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD).

- Abstract
Production of π0 and η mesons has been measured at midrapidity in Cu+Au collisions at sNN=200GeV. Measurements were performed in π0(η)→γγ decay channel in the 1(2)−20GeV/c transverse momentum range. A strong suppression is observed for π0 and η meson production at high transverse momentum in central Cu+Au collisions relative to the p+p results scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. In central collisions the suppression is similar to Au+Au with comparable nuclear overlap. The η/π0 ratio measured as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with mT-scaling parametrization down to pT=2GeV/c, its asymptotic value is constant and consistent with Au+Au and p+p and does not show any significant dependence on collision centrality. Similar results were obtained in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as in e+e− collisions in a range of collision energies sNN=3−1800 GeV. This suggests that the quark-gluon-plasma medium produced in Cu+Cu collisions either does not affect the jet fragmentation into light mesons or it affects the π0 and η the same way.
