Abstract

This paper analysed the effect of the design thinking approach on the student’s awareness of marine and coastal environmental sustainability. The paper employed an experimental design and utilised a sample of thirty-five students using an online questionnaire through a google form validated by experts in educational research. Based on the analysis of their responses, the findings revealed that the respondents are fully aware of the harmful effects of marine and coastal pollution on human lives. It is imperative to prevent the proliferation of plastic products in the environment, even if it means sacrificing something to slow down marine and coastal pollution. Also, students agreed that there is a need for awareness that despite the continual contamination of rivers and oceans, nature’s purifying processes soon return to normal when they have good management. The paper concluded that even with the awareness of marine and coastal pollution, there is still a lack of understanding of the holistic consequences of marine plastic and the resulting impact on ecosystem services, as well as the implications for human health, society, and the economy. It is limited to a small sample size, quantitative data and simple statistical tools of frequency and percentages and recommended that an approach such as design thinking focusing on marine and coastal pollution could be used in schools and the government needs to introduce harsh measures to halt marine and coastal pollution since very few people will regulate themselves.

Abstract

An experiment study of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of two rigid cylinders equipped with and without helical strakes (pitch of 10.0D and height of 0.15D) in a tandem configuration was investigated at a critical spacing distance of 3.5D. Here, the cylinders were attached to a structural test rig, which would allow them to oscillate in the cross-flow direction only. The oscillation amplitude and frequency data were collected. Accordingly, the results revealed that in the case of the two bare cylinders, the amplitude response of the upstream cylinder was higher compared to the case of single cylinder usage. Furthermore, outcomes obtained confirmed that the helical strakes successfully reduced the oscillation amplitude for the upstream and downstream cylinders both, whereas they were ineffective if merely applied at the downstream cylinder. Hence, it can be concluded that the arrangement of the strakes influences the VIV suppression in the context of two-cylinder cases.

Abstract

The loss of revenue or global loss in term of cost due to downtime conditions is always a concern for field operators. Prevailing wave conditions may suddenly appear during offloading operations, which will influence the overall process and may lead to downtime of operations. Severe weather can significantly impact downtime costs of offloading operations and cause a huge loss of revenue. This research work integrates the dynamic stability with downtime cost for LNG carrier in different location of Malaysian waters using real time metocean data. This study on downtime cost utilizes the real time and location-specific wave scatters, as well as limiting criteria of offloading in Malaysian waters. The dynamic roll stability of LNG carrier was investigated for ABS criteria in two depths of water at three real-time locations. Susceptible wave conditions had been identified along with downtime cost analysis. This domain of downtime cost study was further rendered into mathematical package in the form of graphical interfaces for field operators. This mathematical based graphical interface facilitates in predicting location-specific downtime cost charts and allows operator companies to determine the fiscal losses for different range of downtime days and various capacities of LNG carrier.
