8. Airborne dispersion of droplets during coughing: a physical model of viral transmission

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has focused attention on airborne transmission of viruses. Using realistic air flow simulation, we model droplet dispersion from coughing and study the transmission risk related to SARS-CoV-2. Although most airborne droplets are 8-16 $\mu$m in diameter, the droplets with the highest transmission potential are, in fact, 32-40 $\mu$m. Use of face masks is therefore recommended for both personal and social protection. We found social distancing effective at reducing transmission potential across all droplet sizes. However, the presence of a human body 1 m away modifies the aerodynamics so that downstream droplet dispersion is enhanced, which has implications on safe distancing in queues. Based on median viral load, we found that an average of 0.55 viral copies is inhaled at 1 m distance per cough. Droplet evaporation results in significant reduction in droplet counts, but airborne transmission remains possible even under low humidity conditions.

Abstract

Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling is employed to simulate a typical high velocity oxygen fuel process (HVOF) under laboratory operating conditions. Two different modelling approaches, viz., the continuum and discrete models, are engaged to model the liquid fuel kerosene, and their influence on the resulting primary gas dynamics is investigated. Numerical results of the primary gas dynamics are validated against the available measurements and found to be in good agreement. It is observed that the fuel droplets less than 5 μm react completely inside the combustion chamber, whereas the larger droplets do not. With increasing fuel droplet size, the chemical reaction gets extended to the downstream of the combustion chamber, resulting in decreased flame temperature. Thus, it is inferred that a fuel droplet size of up to 5 μm yields better combustion characteristics. Discrete solid CoNiCrAlY particles are then injected into the high velocity primary gas stream, and their inflight dynamics are simulated. Results reveal that a maximum mean particle velocity of 700 m/s and a maximum particle temperature of 1350 K may be achieved under the given operating conditions. Particle deposit shape and size are determined both numerically and experimentally and found to be in good agreement. Abstract

318 p. Plasma spraying is widely used to produce coatings on complex engineering components because of its high deposition rate and wide range of materials that can be sprayed. Also, there are little limitations on the size of the parts and reasonably environmentally friendly as compared to the wet coating processes (e.g. electroplating). However, the three-dimensional shape of the components leads to the deficiency of the plasma spraying process since this process is prone to coating profiles' variations when spraying various surface topologies. Hitherto, the desired coating profiles are successfully optimized by costly and extensive trial and error testing, involving highly-trained manpower and part costs. A deposition model to predict the profiles for such parts is therefore desirable because in using this model, the cost and effort of the test spraying actual part will be reduced, if not eliminated, significantly shortening the process chain. Abstract

Peening velocity (shot velocity) is one of the key parameters in shot peening process, which directly relates to intensity and coverage area. A desired intensity and/or coverage area can be attained by controlling the peening velocity to the right value. However, this is a challenging task as the peening velocity is the function of many different variables (peening system, nozzle design, air pressure, media (shot) flow rate, shot size, etc.). In this study, we develop a process model that links the input/operating parameters of the peening machine to the average shot stream velocity upon impact. In particular, the formulation of shot stream velocity is derived as the function of input air pressure and media flow rate, which also accounted for the peening system and nature of the flow inside (e.g., nozzle shape, pressure loss, energy transfer, and turbulence, etc.). The model is validated against the experimental data for different inlet pressure as well as the media flow rates. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental data. Furthermore, the model validity and reliability are examined for the wide range of input parameters and the system parameter. The results also indicated that the developed process model can be applied for different peening machines with different nozzle design by defining relevant model constants. There are a few key applications for the process model; which are (1) the model can support the operators to rapidly estimate and setup the working conditions of the machine to attain the desired peening intensity and coverage area to avoid the cost and time in doing experiments based on trials and errors, and (2) The model also can be used in model predictive control (MPC) to develop the controller for the peening machine.

Abstract

Due to sustainability concerns, bio‐based production capitalizing on microbes as cell factories is in demand to synthesize valuable products. Nevertheless, the nonhomogenous variations of the extracellular environment in bioprocesses often challenge the biomass growth and the bioproduction yield. To enable a more rational bioprocess optimization, we have established a model‐driven approach that systematically integrates experiments with modeling, executed from flask to bioreactor scale, and using ferulic acid to vanillin bioconversion as a case study. The impacts of mass transfer and aeration on the biomass growth and bioproduction performances were examined using minimal small‐scale experiments. An integrated model coupling the cell factory kinetics with the three‐dimensional computational hydrodynamics of bioreactor was developed to better capture the spatiotemporal distributions of bioproduction. Full‐factorial predictions were then performed to identify the desired operating conditions. A bioconversion yield of 94% was achieved, which is one of the highest for recombinant Escherichia coli using ferulic acid as the precursor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
