12. The influence of topography on the stream N concentration in the Tanzawa Mountains, Southern Kanto District, Japan

Abstract: The water chemistry of 51 headwater streams was studied in the Tanzawa Mountains, western fringe of Southern Kanto Plain, Japan. The relationships to soil N processes and catchment topography were also evaluated using a geographic information system with fine-scale map data. The average concentration of total dissolved N was 0.74 mg-N L
−1 , of which 95% consisted of NO3 − -N. Stream N concentrations were not different among bedrock geologies and among vegetations of the catchments. Stream NO3 − -N marginally correlated to soil nitrification. Stream NO3 − -N also tended to be high in areas with steep and south-facing slopes. These results imply that N transport from Tanzawa forest ecosystems is related to hydrological and biological processes associated with catchment topography.- Published

We are not free from environmental risks that accompany the development of human societies. Modern economic development has accelerated environmental pollution, caused loss of natural habitats, and modified landscapes. These environmental changes have impacted natural systems: water and heat circulation, nutrient cycling, and biodiversity. These changes in natural systems degrade ecosystem services and subsequently increase environmental risks for humans. Environmental risks, therefore, are not only human health risks by pollution, climatic anomalies, and natural disasters, but also degradation of ecosystem services on which most people are relying for their lives. We cannot entirely eliminate the risks, because it is not possible to attain zero impact on the environment, but we need to find a mechanism that minimizes environmental risks for human sustainably. This is the idea of the interdisciplinary framework of “environmental risk management” theory, which advocates harmony between economic development and environmental conservation. Based on this theory, the Sustainable Living with Environmental Risk (SLER) programme, adopted by the Japanese Ministry of Education (MEXT) as one of its strategic programmes, has been training graduate students at the Yokohama National University, Japan, from 2009 to 2013 to become future environmental leaders who will take the initiative in reducing the level of environmental risks and in protecting natural resources in the developing nations of Asia and Africa. This book provides students and teachers of this new academic field with a comprehensive coverage of case studies of environmental risks and their practical management technologies not only in Japan but also in developing nations in Asia and Africa.

26. Impact of no‐tillage on soil quality and crop yield in Asia: A meta‐analysis.

No‐tillage (NT) (or zero‐tillage) has been widely used to mitigate the adverse effects caused by intensive tillage. However, the long‐term effectiveness of NT is highly dependent on agriculture field management, soil type, and climatic conditions. NT under different climatic condition fluctuations and soil conditions has not also been considered adequately in Asia. Furthermore, the high demand for food production in Asia requires a deeper understanding of the impact of NT on soil properties and crop production. Therefore, this meta‐analysis was conducted using 64 peer‐reviewed articles to evaluate the effects of NT on soil organic carbon (SOC), soil carbon storage, mean weight diameter (MWD), bulk density, water‐stable aggregates, water content, other soil chemical properties, and yield responses. Our results showed that NT significantly increased SOC content overall than conventional tillage (CT). Likewise, as observed at a 0–10 cm soil depth, SOC content significantly increased by 77.0% in NT compared to CT. Alternatively, although overall, NT favoured the accumulation of soil C by 53.2% than CT, and this difference was even more impressive at the 0–10 cm layer by 77.0% than CT. Moreover, overall NT significantly increased MWD, soil available P, and >2 mm aggregates than CT. In contrast, even though NT did not significantly decrease smaller than the 0.25 mm aggregates than CT in the 0–10 cm layer, NT increased exchangeable K by 81.0% than CT. Results also showed that while NT and CT had no significant effects on crop yield, NT slightly increased soybean and wheat yield, and CT increased rice and maize yield than NT. Based on these results, NT is proposed as a promising practice to enhance soil quality and is plausible to increase crop yield in Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. - Abstract
Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. Amalgamating data into a single global database will assist researchers in investigating and answering a wide variety of pressing questions, for example, jointly assessing aboveground and belowground biodiversity distributions and drivers of biodiversity change.

Using the information provided on the main threats in the ten ecoregions present in the six world regions (Table of threats for Sub-Saharan Africa, South West Pacific, Latin America and Caribbean, North Africa and Near East, North America and Europe; FAOand ITPS, 2015), a summary table of the main threats common to these ecoregions was produced. This exercise showed that the most widespread threat to soil biodiversity in the world was the loss of SOM and SOC, and that this could be associated with other threats such as deforestation and agricultural intensification (both linked withland use change) and with climate change (particularly in tundra). This clearly shows the importance of sustainable management and conservation practices, to maintain this resource in soils, which represents one of the bases for the soils food webs. Deforestation and agricultural intensification were also major threats worldwide, being important intropical and temperate broad leaf and mixed forests and temperate and montane grassland sand boreal forests/taiga, although the level of available information on the topic was highly variable, depending on the particular world regions where these ecoregions occur. The ecoregions with the highest number of threats were the deserts and dry shrublands, the tropical and subtropical grasslands, and the temperate broad leaf and mixed forests. Data collated from data provided by original data collectors or from data provided within published articles. The MetaData.csv provides information on each of the original data sources, including bibliographic information about the original article and information on how many sites were sampled. The SiteData.csv gives site-level variables, such as geographic coordinates, the environmental parameters as well as site-level community metrics (species richness, total abundance and total biomass). The SppOccData.csv provides the observation level data - the occurrence, abundance and/or biomass of individual species/morpho-species/life-stage at a particular site. Not every data source contained such observation level data. Metadata information about the variables in each file are provided in the files MetaData_info.csv, SiteData_info.csv and SppOccData_info.csv, respectively. - Abstract
Soil organisms, including earthworms, are a key component of terrestrial ecosystems. However, little is known about their diversity, their distribution, and the threats affecting them. We compiled a global dataset of sampled earthworm communities from 6928 sites in 57 countries as a basis for predicting patterns in earthworm diversity, abundance, and biomass. We found that local species richness and abundance typically peaked at higher latitudes, displaying patterns opposite to those observed in aboveground organisms. However, high species dissimilarity across tropical locations may cause diversity across the entirety of the tropics to be higher than elsewhere. Climate variables were found to be more important in shaping earthworm communities than soil properties or habitat cover. These findings suggest that climate change may have serious implications for earthworm communities and for the functions they provide.
