Abstract

BACKGROUND: Mucositis is a common and highly impactful side effect of conventional and emerging cancer therapy and thus the subject of intense investigation. Although common practice, mucositis assessment is heterogeneously adopted and poorly guided, impacting evidence synthesis and translation. The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) Mucositis Study Group (MSG) therefore aimed to establish expert recommendations for how existing mucositis assessment tools should be used, in clinical care and trials contexts, to improve the consistency of mucositis assessment. METHODS: This study was conducted over two stages (January 2022-July 2023). The first phase involved a survey to MASCC-MSG members (January 2022-May 2022), capturing current practices, challenges and preferences. These then informed the second phase, in which a set of initial recommendations were prepared and refined using the Delphi method (February 2023-May 2023). Consensus was defined as agreement on a parameter by >80% of respondents. FINDINGS: Seventy-two MASCC-MSG members completed the first phase of the study (37 females, 34 males, mainly oral care specialists). High variability was noted in the use of mucositis assessment tools, with a high reliance on clinician assessment compared to patient reported outcome measures (PROMs, 47% vs 3%, 37% used a combination). The World Health Organization (WHO) and Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE) scales were most commonly used to assess mucositis across multiple settings. Initial recommendations were reviewed by experienced MSG members and following two rounds of Delphi survey consensus was achieved in 91 of 100 recommendations. For example, in patients receiving chemotherapy, the recommended tool for clinician assessment in clinical practice is WHO for oral mucositis (89.5% consensus), and WHO or CTCAE for gastrointestinal mucositis (85.7% consensus). The recommended PROM in clinical trials is OMD/WQ for oral mucositis (93.3% consensus), and PRO-CTCAE for gastrointestinal mucositis (83.3% consensus). INTERPRETATION: These new recommendations provide much needed guidance on mucositis assessment and may be applied in both clinical practice and research to streamline comparison and synthesis of global data sets, thus accelerating translation of new knowledge into clinical practice. Abstract

The use of deep learning (DL) for the analysis and diagnosis of biomedical and health care problems has received unprecedented attention in the last decade. The technique has recorded a number of achievements for unearthing meaningful features and accomplishing tasks that were hitherto difficult to solve by other methods and human experts. Currently, biological and medical devices, treatment, and applications are capable of generating large volumes of data in the form of images, sounds, text, graphs, and signals creating the concept of big data. The innovation of DL is a developing trend in the wake of big data for data representation and analysis. DL is a type of machine learning algorithm that has deeper (or more) hidden layers of similar function cascaded into the network and has the capability to make meaning from medical big data. Current transformation drivers to achieve personalized health care delivery will be possible with the use of mobile health (mHealth). DL can provide the analysis for the deluge of data generated from mHealth apps. This paper reviews the fundamentals of DL methods and presents a general view of the trends in DL by capturing literature from PubMed and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers database publications that implement different variants of DL. We highlight the implementation of DL in health care, which we categorize into biological system, electronic health record, medical image, and physiological signals. In addition, we discuss some inherent challenges of DL affecting biomedical and health domain, as well as prospective research directions that focus on improving health management by promoting the application of physiological signals and modern internet technology.

Abstract

Nickel ferrite have gathered a lot of research interest nowadays, because of their unique magnetic and structural traits, which makes appealing for a variety of scientific applications. In recent years, considerable attention has been placed towards the impact of rare-earth and transition elements doping on the magnetic as well as the structural traits of nickel spinel ferrite. This study delivers a concise summary of scientific advancements in this area. It discusses the processes used for fabricating doped nickel spinel ferrite, the influence of different dopants on the material's magnetic and structural traits, and the mechanisms that underlie these effects. The review also highlights the potential applications of doped nickel spinel ferrite in fields such as magnetic data storage, biomedical, and photocatalysis.

34. Low-Profile Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons Traveling-Wave Antenna for Endfire Radiation

Abstract

This paper proposes a low-profile and highly efficient endfire radiating travelling-wave antenna based on spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) transmission line. The aperture is approximately $0.32\lambda_0\times0.01\lambda_0$ where $\lambda_0$ is the space wavelength at the operational frequency 8 GHz. This antenna provides an endfire radiation beam within 7.5-8.5 GHz. The maximum gain and total efficiency reaches 9.2 dBi and $96\%$, respectively. In addition to the endfire operation, it also provides a beam scanning functionality within 9-12 GHz. Measurement results are finally given to validate the proposed SSPPs antenna.

Abstract

This letter proposes a new spoof surface plasmon transmission line (SSP-TL) using capacitor loading techniques. This new SSP-TL features flexible and reconfigurable dispersion control and highly selective filtering performance without resorting to configuration change. Moreover, it requires much smaller line width than the conventional SSP-TLs for achieving a extremely slow wave (or a highly confined field), which is quite useful for a compact system. To illustrate the design principle, several examples are designed within the frequency range of 2-8 GHz. Both numerical and experimental results are given in comparison with the conventional SSP-TL. It is demonstrated that the proposed technique provides a better performance in size reduction and dispersion reconfigurability.

Abstract

Breast cancer has become a global health burden, and therefore requires necessitating action against the development of affordable, target-oriented, and safe chemotherapeutic agents to mitigate its prevalence worldwide. In the present report, titanium oxide (TiO2) nanocrystals (NCs) were synthesized using the green route utilizing Ocimum basilicum leaf extract (OBLE). X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies revealed that TiO2 NCs exhibit tetragonal crystal configuration with anatase-type symmetry with space group. The phenolic groups (–OH) present in OBLE were detected as the bend appeared at 3420 cm− 1 in the infrared spectrum. The characteristic hump positioned at 331 nm in the UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectrum (UV–DRS) of biosynthesized TiO2 NCs confirmed the formation of nanoparticles and the optical band gap of TiO2 NCs was found to be 3.41 eV as evaluated from Tauc's plot. The surface morphology of TiO2 NCs showed minute agglomeration with an average particle size of 11.8 ± 0.66 nm as obtained from statistical analysis of the particle size distribution. The cytotoxic activity of TiO2 NCs was investigated against MDA–MB 231 cancer cells and dose-dependent cell inhibition was observed with a low IC50 value of 13.35 µg/mL after 48 h of incubation time. The present study underscores the remarkable cytotoxicity demonstrated by TiO2 NCs against breast cancer cell lines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The introduction of targeted therapy and immunotherapy has tremendously changed the clinical outcomes and prognosis of cancer patients. Despite innovative pharmacological therapies and improved radiotherapy (RT) techniques, patients continue to suffer from side effects, of which oral mucositis (OM) is still the most impactful, especially for quality of life. We provide an overview of current advances in cancer pharmacotherapy and RT, in relation to their potential to cause OM, and of the less explored and more recent literature reports related to the best management of OM. We have analyzed natural/antioxidant agents, probiotics, mucosal protectants and healing coadjuvants, pharmacotherapies, immunomodulatory and anticancer agents, photobiomodulation and the impact of technology. The discovery of more precise pathophysiologic mechanisms of CT and RT-induced OM has outlined that OM has a multifactorial origin, including direct effects, oxidative damage, upregulation of immunologic factors, and effects on oral flora. A persistent upregulated immune response, associated with factors related to patients' characteristics, may contribute to more severe and long-lasting OM. The goal is strategies to conjugate individual patient, disease, and therapy-related factors to guide OM prevention or treatment. Abstract

This study focuses on the development of superparamagnetic and multifunctional Dy doped ZnDyxFe2-xO4 (x = 0.0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03) ferrite using sol–gel auto-combustion (SG) technique to remove the crystal violet pollutant found in textile industry wastewater using the adsorption and photocatalysis processes. The pure phased spinel cubic crystal structure was achieved for the prepared ferrite nanoparticles, as confirmed through the XRD results. The calculated crystallite size employing the Scherrer formula by taking the high intensity (311) peak was in the range of 26–35 nm. FESEM pictures confirm the presence of spherically shaped grains with definite grain boundaries. With the increasing doping content of Dy, the band gap for the produced photocatalysts was decreased from 1.47 to 1.11 eV. We demonstrated that our prepared Dy doped zinc ferrite nanoparticles behave as a soft magnetic material based on the magnetic measurement data by exhibiting the hysteresis behaviour with low rentivity and coercivity. This indicates the tendency of zinc nanoparticles to exhibit superparamagnetic behaviour at ambient temperature under an external magnetic field. ZnDy0.03Fe1.97O4 (x = 0.03) sample exhibits greater reactivity with a discolouring rate of 92.30% as compared to the ZnFe2O4 degradation rate of 83.07% during 120 min of irradiation under the natural sunlight. Furthermore, the adsorption/photocatalytic activities are amplified as the content of the dopant (Dy) rises, suggesting that the dopants are crucial to the photocatalytic breakdown and the adsorption of crystal violet (CV) dye. Using the antibacterial analysis, it was noted that ZnFe2O4 (x = 0.00) shows the zone of inhibition (ZOI) for both the strains, Bacillus subtilis and Salmonella typhi. With all the excellent magnetic, adsorption, photocatalytic, and antibacterial behaviours, the multifunctional magnetic nanomaterials will be highly beneficial for environmental and biological usages.
