In this review article, we briefly outline our current understanding of the physics associated with the HI 21-cm signal from cosmic dawn. We discuss different phases of cosmic dawn as the ambient gas and the background radiations evolve with the redshift. We address the consequences of several possible heating sources and radiation background on the global 21-cm signal. We further review our present perspective of other important aspects of the HI 21-cm signal such as the power spectrum and imaging. Finally, we highlight the future key measurements of the Square Kilometre Array and other ongoing/upcoming experiments that will enlighten our understanding of the early Universe., 22 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in Journal of Astrophysics and Astronomy(JoAA)

Detecting the line-intensity mapping (LIM) signal from the galaxies of the Epoch of Reionization is an emerging tool to constrain their role in reionization. Ongoing and upcoming experiments target the signal fluctuations across the sky to reveal statistical and astrophysical properties of these galaxies via signal statistics, e.g., the power spectrum. Here, we revisit the [C II]$_{158 \mu \text{m}}$ LIM power spectrum under non-uniform line-luminosity scatter, which has a halo-mass variation of statistical properties. Line-luminosity scatter from a cosmological hydrodynamic and radiative transfer simulation of galaxies at $z=6$ is considered in this study. We test the robustness of different model frameworks that interpret the impact of the line-luminosity scatter on the signal statistics. We use a simple power-law model to fit the scatter and demonstrate that the mean luminosity-halo mass correlation fit cannot preserve the mean intensity of the LIM signal (hence the clustering power spectrum) under non-uniform scatter. In our case, the mean intensity changes by $\sim 48$ per cent compared to the mean correlation fit in contrast to the general case with semi-analytic scatter. However, we find that the prediction for the mean intensity from the most-probable fit can be modelled robustly, considering the generalized and more realistic non-uniform scatter. We also explore the possibility of diminishing luminosity bias under non-uniform scatter, affecting the clustering power spectrum, although this phenomenon might not be statistically significant. The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) remains a poorly understood cosmic era for the most part. Yet, efforts are still going on to probe and understand this epoch. We present a review of the latest developments in the techniques (especially line-intensity mapping) to study the EoR and try to highlight the contribution of the Indian community in this field. Line-emissions like [H I]$_{\rm 21cm}$, Lyman-$\alpha$, [C II]$_{\text{158}\mu\text{m}}$ and their role as tracers in probing the EoR are discussed. While the [H I]$_{\rm 21cm}$ is an excellent probe of the early IGM, the others are mainly targeted to do an unresolved and large-scale survey of the reionizing sources. Techniques to model these signals include simulations and machine learning approaches, along with the challenge to tackle foregrounds or interlopers. We also discuss synergy opportunities among the various tracers that we mention. Synergy addresses different aspects of the problem, which otherwise is difficult or impossible to tackle. They include statistics like cross-power spectrum, cross-bispectrum, and other techniques such as follow-up studies. We present updates on the relevant experiments; these include the upper limits on the [H I]$_{\rm 21cm}$ power spectrum, along with some highlights on high-redshift galaxy surveys. Finally, we highlight what can be improved further within the community: applying machine learning and simulations based on hydrodynamic and radiative-transfer techniques. It is extremely important to understand the processes through which the thermal state of the inter-galactic medium (IGM) evolved in the early universe in order to study the evolution of HI 21-cm signal during cosmic dawn. Here, we consider the heating of the IGM due to cosmic ray protons generated by the supernovae from both early Pop III and Pop II stars. The low energy cosmic ray protons from Pop III supernovae can escape from minihalos and heat the IGM via collision and ionization of hydrogen. Furthermore, high energy protons generated in Pop II supernovae can escape the hosting halos and heat the IGM via magnetosonic Alfv\'en waves. We show that the heating due to these cosmic ray particles can significantly impact the IGM temperature and hence the global 21-cm signal at $z\sim 14-18$. The depth, location, and duration of the 21-cm absorption profile are highly dependent on the efficiencies of cosmic ray heating. In particular, the EDGES signal can be well fitted by the cosmic ray heating along with the Lyman-$\alpha$ coupling, and the dark matter-baryon interaction that we consider to achieve a `colder IGM background'. Further, we argue that the properties of cosmic rays and the nature of first generation of stars could be constrained by accurately measuring the global 21-cm absorption signal during the cosmic dawn., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Understanding the low-frequency radio sky in depth is necessary to subtract foregrounds in order to detect the redshifted 21 cm signal of neutral hydrogen from the Cosmic Dawn, Epoch of Reionization (EoR) and post-reionization era. In this second paper of the series, we present the upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) observation of the ELAIS N1 field made at 300-500 MHz. The image covers an area of $\sim 1.8$ $\mathrm{deg}^{2}$ and has a central background rms noise of $\sim$ 15 $��\mathrm{Jy}$ $\mathrm{beam}^{-1}$. We present a radio source catalog containing 2528 sources (with flux densities > 100 $��$Jy) and normalized source counts derived from that. The detailed comparison of detected sources with previous radio observations is shown. We discuss flux scale accuracy, positional offsets, spectral index distribution and correction factors in source counts. The normalized source counts are in agreement with previous observations of the same field, as well as model source counts from the Square Kilometre Array Design Study (SKADS) simulation. It shows a flattening below $\sim$1 mJy which corresponds to rise in population of star forming galaxies and radio-quiet AGN. For the first time, we estimated the spectral characteristics of the angular power spectrum or Multi-Frequency Angular Power Spectrum (MFAPS) of diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission (DGSE) over the wide frequency bandwidth of $300-500$~MHz from radio interferometric observations. The HI 21-cm optical depth ($\tau_b$) can be considerably large as the kinetic and spin temperature of the inter-galactic medium (IGM) is expected to be very low during cosmic dawn. It will be particularly higher at regions with HI over-density. We revisit the validity of the widely used linearized equation for estimating the HI 21-cm differential brightness temperature ($T_b$) which assumes $\tau_b << 1$ and approximates $[1-\exp({-\tau_b})]$ as $\tau_b$. We consider two scenarios, one without any additional cooling mechanism or radio background (referred as the standard scenario) and the other (referred as the excess-cooling} scenario) assumes the EDGES-like absorption profile and an excess cooling mechanism. We find that given a measured global absorption signal, consistent with the standard (excess-cooling) scenario, the linearized equation overestimates the spin temperature by $\sim 5\%(10\%)$. Further, using numerical simulations, we study the impact that the large optical depth has on various signal statistics. We observe that the variance, skewness and kurtosis, calculated at simulation resolution ($\sim 0.5 h^{-1} \, {\rm Mpc}$), are over-predicted up to $\sim 30\%$, $30\%$ and $15\%$ respectively for the standard and up to $\sim 90\%$, $50\%$ and $50\%$ respectively for the excess-cooling scenario. Moreover, we find that the probability distribution function of $T_b$ is squeezed and becomes more Gaussian in shape if no approximation is made. The spherically averaged HI power spectrum is overpredicted by up to $\sim 25 \%$ and $80\%$ at all scales for the standard and excess-cooling scenarios respectively., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures. The EDGES experiment related to the observant of brightness temperature \(T_{21}\) of 21cm line arising from ground state of neutral Hydrogen atom, has shown an excess absorption feature ( \(− 500^ {+200}_{ − 500}\) mK) in \(T_{21}\) spectrum corresponds to the era of cosmic dawn (\(z \sim 17.2\)). In order to explain the observed excess trough of \(T_{21}\) we consider Interacting Dark Energy scenario (interaction of Dark Matter and Dark Energy) along with the scattering of baryon matter with Dark Matter. Three different Interacting Dark Energy (IDE) models are used and the viability of those models are tested in the context of EDGES experimental results. It is found that Dark Matter-Dark Energy interaction modifies the evolution process of the Universe and hence consequently affects the brightness temperature. Dark Matter-baryon interaction also affects the \(T_{21}\) temperature since baryon fluid would transfer heat to the colder Dark Matter due to the Dark Matter baryon collision. In addition we also give bounds on the model parameters of the IDE models and Dark Matter model from EDGES observational data. It is noted that Dark Matter-Dark Energy interaction enables to explore larger range of Dark Matter mass regimes that would satisfy the EDGES result.

The EDGES experiment has observed an excess trough ($-500^{+200}_{-500}$ mK) in the brightness temperature $T_{21}$ of the 21cm absorption line of neutral Hydrogen atom (HI) from the era of cosmic dawn ($z \simeq 17.2$). We consider possible interaction of Dark Matter and Dark Energy fluid along with the cooling off of the baryon matter by its collision with Dark Matter to explain the observed excess trough of $T_{21}$. We make use of three different Dark Matter-Dark Energy (DM-DE) interaction models to taste the viability of those models in explaining the EDGES results. The evolution of Hubble parameter is modified by DM-DE interactions and this is also addressed in this work. This in turn influences the optical depth of HI 21cm as well as the baryon temperature and thus effects the $T_{21}$ brightness temperature. In addition we also find that the DM-DE interaction enables us to explore Dark Matter with varied mass regimes and their viabilities in terms of satisfying the EDGES result., 19 pages, 10 figures

The recent EDGES measurements of the global 21-cm signal from the cosmic dawn suggest that the kinetic temperature of the inter-galactic medium (IGM) might be significantly lower compared to its expected value. The colder IGM directly affects the hydrogen recombination of the universe during the cosmic dawn and dark ages by enhancing the rate of recombinations. Here, we study and quantify, the impact of the colder IGM scenario on the recombination history of the universe in the context of DM-baryonic interaction model which is widely used to explain the depth of the EDGES 21-cm signal. We find that, in general, the hydrogen ionisation fraction gets suppressed during the dark ages and cosmic dawn and the suppression gradually increases at lower redshifts until X-ray heating turns on. However, accurate estimation of the ionisation fraction requires knowledge of the entire thermal history of the IGM, from the epoch of thermal decoupling of hydrogen gas and the CMBR to the cosmic dawn. It is possible that two separate scenarios which predict very similar HI differential temperature during the cosmic dawn and are consistent with the EDGES 21-cm signal might have very different IGM temperature during the dark ages. The evolutions of the ionisation fraction in these two scenarios are quite different. This prohibits us to accurately calculate the ionisation fraction during the cosmic dawn using the EDGES 21-cm signal alone. We find that the changes in the ionisation fraction w.r.t the standard scenario at redshift $z \sim 17 $ could be anything between $\sim 0 \%$ to $\sim 36 \%$. This uncertainty may be reduced if measurements of HI 21-cm differential temperature at multiple redshifts are simultaneously used., 10 pages, 8 figures. Three-dimensional radiative transfer simulations of the epoch of reionization can produce realistic results, but are computationally expensive. On the other hand, simulations relying on one-dimensional radiative transfer solutions are faster but limited in accuracy due to their more approximate nature. Here, we compare the performance of the reionization simulation codes grizzly and C2-ray which use 1D and 3D radiative transfer schemes respectively. The comparison is performed using the same cosmological density fields, halo catalogues and source properties. We find that the ionization maps, as well as the 21-cm signal maps from these two simulations are very similar even for complex scenarios which include thermal feedback on low mass halos. The comparison between the schemes in terms of the statistical quantities such as the power spectrum of the brightness temperature fluctuation agree with each other within 10% error throughout the entire reionization history. grizzly seems to perform slightly better than the semi-numerical approaches considered in Majumdar et al. (2014) which are based on the excursion set principle. The light-cone (LC) effect causes the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) 21-cm signal $T_{\rm b} (\hat{\bf{n}}, \nu)$ to evolve significantly along the line of sight (LoS) direction $\nu$. In the first part of this paper, we present a method to properly incorporate the LC effect in simulations of the EoR 21-cm signal that include peculiar velocities. Subsequently, we discuss how to quantify the second order statistics of the EoR 21-cm signal in the presence of the LC effect. We demonstrate that the 3D power spectrum $P({\bf{k}})$ fails to quantify the entire information because it assumes the signal to be ergodic and periodic, whereas the LC effect breaks these conditions along the LoS. Considering a LC simulation centered at redshift $8$ where the mean neutral fraction drops from $0.65$ to $0.35$ across the box, we find that $P({\bf{k}})$ misses out $\sim 40 \%$ of the information at the two ends of the $17.41 \, {\rm MHz}$ simulation bandwidth. The multi-frequency angular power spectrum (MAPS) ${\mathcal C}_{\ell}(\nu_1,\nu_2)$ quantifies the statistical properties of $T_{\rm b} (\hat{\bf{n}}, \nu)$ without assuming the signal to be ergodic and periodic along the LoS. We expect this to quantify the entire statistical information of the EoR 21-cm signal. Redshifted HI 21-cm signal from the cosmic dawn and epoch of reionization evolve considerably along the LoS. We study the impact of this evolution (so called the light cone effect) on the HI 21-cm power spectrum. It is found that the LC effect has a significant impact on the 3D power spectrum and the change could be up to a factor of few. The LC effect is particularly strong during the cosmic dawn near the ‘peaks’ and ‘dips’ in the power spectrum when plotted with redshift. We also show that the 3D power spectrum, which could fully describe ergodic and periodic signal, losses out some information regarding the second order statistics of the signal as the EoR/CD 21-cm signal is non-ergodic and non-periodic along the line of sight. We show that the multi-frequency angular power spectrum (MAPS)${\mathcal {C}}_{\ell }(\nu _1, \nu _2)$captures all the information regarding the second order statistics of the signal even in the presence of the LC effect.

The matched filtering technique is an efficient method to detect H ii bubbles and absorption regions in radio interferometric observations of the redshifted 21-cm signal from the epoch of reionization and the Cosmic Dawn. Here, we present an implementation of this technique to the upcoming observations such as the SKA1-low for a blind search of absorption regions at the Cosmic Dawn. The pipeline explores four dimensional parameter space on the simulated mock visibilities using a MCMC algorithm. The framework is able to efficiently determine the positions and sizes of the absorption/H ii regions in the field of view.

We investigate the cross-correlation between the spatial distribution of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) and the 21cm intensity mapping signal at $z\sim[3-5]$. At these redshifts, galactic feedback is supposed to only marginally affect the matter power spectrum, and the neutral hydrogen distribution is independently constrained by quasar spectra. Using a high resolution N-body simulation, populated with neutral hydrogen a posteriori, we forecast for the expected LBG-21cm cross-spectrum and its error for a 21cm field observed by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA1-LOW and SKA1-MID), combined with a spectroscopic LBG survey with the same volume. The cross power can be detected with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) up to ~10 times higher (and down to ~4 times smaller scales) than the 21cm auto-spectrum for this set-up, with the SNR depending only very weakly on redshift and the LBG population. We also show that while both the 21cm auto- and LBG-21cm cross-spectra can be reliably recovered after the cleaning of smooth-spectrum foreground contamination, only the cross-power is robust to problematic non-smooth foregrounds like polarized synchrotron emission., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures. In this first paper of the series, we present initial results of newly upgraded Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) observation of European Large-Area ISO Survey-North 1 (ELAIS-N1) at 325 MHz with 32 MHz bandwidth. Precise measurement of fluctuations in Galactic and extragalactic foreground emission as a function of frequency as well as angular scale is necessary for detecting redshifted 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen from Cosmic Dawn, Epoch of Reionization (EoR) and post-reionization epoch. Here, for the first time we have statistically quantified the Galactic and extragalactic foreground sources in the ELAIS-N1 field in the form of angular power spectrum using the newly developed Tapered Gridded Estimator (TGE). We have calibrated the data with and without direction-dependent calibration techniques. We have demonstrated the effectiveness of TGE against the direction dependent effects by using higher tapering of field of view (FoV). We have found that diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission (DGSE) dominates the sky, after point source subtraction, across the angular multipole range $ 1115 \leqslant \mathcal{\ell} \leqslant 5083 $ and $ 1565 \leqslant \mathcal{\ell} \leqslant 4754 $ for direction-dependent and -independent calibrated visibilities respectively. The statistical fluctuations in DGSE has been quantified as a power law of the form $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{\ell}}= A \mathcal{\ell}^{-\beta} $. The best fitted values of (A, $\beta$) are ($ 62 \pm 6$ $mK^{2}$, $2.55 \pm 0.3 $) and ($ 48 \pm 4$ $mK^{2}$, $2.28 \pm 0.4 $ ) for the two different calibration approaches. The light-cone (LC) effect causes the mean as well as the statistical properties of the redshifted 21-cm signal $T_{\rm b}(\hat{\bf n},\nu)$ to change with frequency $\nu$ (or cosmic time). Consequently, the statistical homogeneity (ergodicity) of the signal along the line of sight (LoS) direction is broken. This is a severe problem particularly during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) when the mean neutral hydrogen fraction ($\bar{x}_{\rm HI}$) changes rapidly as the universe evolves. This will also pose complications for large bandwidth observations. These effects imply that the 3D power spectrum $P(k)$ fails to quantify the entire second-order statistics of the signal as it assumes the signal to be ergodic and periodic along the LoS. As a proper alternative to $P(k)$, we use the multi-frequency angular power spectrum (MAPS) ${\mathcal C}_{\ell}(\nu_1,\nu_2)$ which does not assume the signal to be ergodic and periodic along the LoS. Here, we study the prospects for measuring the EoR 21-cm MAPS using future observations with the upcoming SKA-Low. Ignoring any contribution from the foregrounds, we find that the EoR 21-cm MAPS can be measured at a confidence level $\ge 5\sigma$ at angular scales $\ell \sim 1300$ for total observation time $t_{\rm obs} \ge 128\,{\rm hrs}$ across $\sim 44\,{\rm MHz}$ observational bandwidth. We also quantitatively address the effects of foregrounds on MAPS detectability forecast by avoiding signal contained within the foreground wedge in $(k_\perp, k_\parallel)$ plane. The light-cone (LC) effect imprints the cosmological evolution of the redshifted 21-cm signal $T_{\rm b} ({\hat{\bf{n}}}, \nu)$ along the frequency axis which is the line of sight (LoS) direction of an observer. The effect is particularly pronounced during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) when the mean hydrogen neutral fraction ${\bar{x}_{\rm HI}}(\nu)$ falls rapidly as the universe evolves. The multi-frequency angular power spectrum (MAPS) ${{\mathcal C}_{\ell}}(\nu_1,\nu_2)$ quantifies the entire second-order statistics of $T_{\rm b} ({\hat{\bf{n}}}, \nu)$ considering both the systematic variation along $\nu$ due to the cosmological evolution and also the statistically homogeneous and isotropic fluctuations along all the three spatial directions encoded in ${\hat{\bf{n}}}$ and $\nu$. Here we propose a simple model where the systematic frequency $(\nu_1,\nu_2)$ dependence of ${{\mathcal C}_{\ell}}(\nu_1,\nu_2)$ arises entirely due to the evolution of ${\bar{x}_{\rm HI}}(\nu)$. This provides a new method to observationally determine the reionization history. Considering a LC simulation of the EoR 21-cm signal, we use the diagonal elements $\nu_1=\nu_2$ of ${{\mathcal C}_{\ell}}(\nu_1,\nu_2)$ to validate our model. We demonstrate that it is possible to recover the reionization history across the entire observational bandwidth provided we have the value ${\bar{x}_{\rm HI}}$ at a single frequency as an external input., Comment: Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS) Letters. Observations of redshifted 21-cm signal from neutral hydrogen (HI) appear to be the most promising probe of the cosmic dark ages. The signal carries information about the thermal state along with density distribution of the intergalactic medium (IGM). The cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR), through its interaction with charged particles, plays a major role in determining the kinetic and spin temperature of HI gas in the IGM during dark ages. A Spatially fluctuating ionization fraction, which is caused by inhomogeneous recombinations, causes heat transfer from the CMBR to the IGM gas inhomogeneous. We revisit the impact of this inhomogeneous heat transfer on spatial fluctuations in the observed HI 21-cm signal over a large redshift range during dark ages. Our study shows that the effect negatively impacts fluctuations in the HI spin temperature and results in an enhanced HI 21-cm power spectrum. We find that the effect is particularly important during the transition of the gas kinetic temperature being coupled to the CMBR to fully decoupled from it, i.e., in the redshift range $30 \lesssim z \lesssim 300$. It is found that, on the average the HI power spectrum, $P_{T_b}(k, z)$ is enhanced by $\sim 4\%$, $\sim10 \%$ , $\sim 20\%$, and $\sim 30 \%$ at redshifts $60$, $90$, $140$, and $200$ respectively at $k=0.1 \, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. The effect becomes even more significant at lower values of $k_{\parallel}^2/k^2$ due to the reduced dominance of the peculiar velocity. It is observed that the power spectrum is enhanced by $\sim 49\%$ and $\sim 93\%$ at redshifts $140$ and $200$ respectively at $k=0.1 \, {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ for $k_{\parallel}^2/k^2=0$. Measurement of fluctuations in diffuse HI 21 cm background radiation from the post-reionization epoch (z < 6) is a promising avenue to probe the large-scale structure of the Universe and understand the evolution of galaxies. We observe the European Large-Area ISO Survey-North 1 (ELAIS-N1) field at 300-500 MHz using the upgraded Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) and employ the 'foreground avoidance' technique to estimate the HI 21 cm power spectrum in the redshift range z = 1.96-3.58. Given the possible systematics that may remain in the data, we find the most stringent upper limits on the spherically averaged 21 cm power spectra at k~1.0 Mpc$^{-1}$ are (58.87 mK)$^2$, (61.49 mK)$^2$, (60.89 mK)$^2$, (105.85 mK)$^2$ at z = 1.96,2.19,2.62 and 3.58, respectively. We use this to constrain the product of neutral HI mass density (Omega_HI) and HI bias (b_HI) to the underlying dark matter density field, [Omega_HI*b_HI], as 0.09,0.11,0.12,0.24 at z=1.96,2.19,2.62,3.58, respectively. To the best of our knowledge these are the first limits on the HI 21 cm power spectra at the redshift range z = 1.96 - 3.58 and would play a significant role to constrain the models of galaxy formation and evolution., Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters (APJL)

We present a detailed comparison of three different simulations of the epoch of reionization (EoR). The radiative transfer simulation (${\rm C}^2$-RAY) among them is our benchmark. Radiative transfer codes can produce realistic results, but are computationally expensive. We compare it with two semi-numerical techniques: one using the same halos as ${\rm C}^2$-RAY as its sources (Sem-Num), and one using a conditional Press-Schechter scheme (CPS+GS). These are vastly more computationally efficient than ${\rm C}^2$-RAY, but use more simplistic physical assumptions. We evaluate these simulations in terms of their ability to reproduce the history and morphology of reionization. We find that both Sem-Num and CPS+GS can produce an ionization history and morphology that is very close to ${\rm C}^2$-RAY, with Sem-Num performing slightly better compared to CPS+GS. We also study different redshift space observables of the 21-cm signal from EoR: the variance, power spectrum and its various angular multipole moments. We find that both semi-numerical models perform reasonably well in predicting these observables at length scales relevant for present and future experiments. However, Sem-Num performs slightly better than CPS+GS in producing the reionization history, which is necessary for interpreting the future observations., 20 pages, 14 figures, 1 table. Studying the cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization through the redshifted 21 cm line are among the major science goals of the SKA1. Their significance lies in the fact that they are closely related to the very first stars in the universe. Interpreting the upcoming data would require detailed modelling of the relevant physical processes. In this article, we focus on the theoretical models of reionization that have been worked out by various groups working in India with the upcoming SKA in mind. These models include purely analytical and semi-numerical calculations as well as fully numerical radiative transfer simulations. Tomographic intensity mapping of the HI using the redshifted 21 cm observations opens up a new window towards our understanding of cosmological background evolution and structure formation. This is a key science goal of several upcoming radio telescopes including the Square Kilometer Array (SKA). In this article we focus on the post-reionization signal and investigate the of cross correlating the 21 cm signal with other tracers of the large scale structure. We consider the cross-correlation of the post-reionization 21 cm signal with the Lyman-alpha forest, Lyman-break galaxies and late time anisotropies in the CMBR maps like weak lensing and the Integrated Sachs Wolfe effect. The observed 21-cm signal from the epoch of reionization will be distorted along the line-of-sight by the peculiar velocities of matter particles. These redshift-space distortions will affect the contrast in the signal and will also make it anisotropic. This anisotropy contains information about the cross-correlation between the matter density field and the neutral hydrogen field, and could thus potentially be used to extract information about the sources of reionization. In this paper, we study a collection of simulated reionization scenarios assuming different models for the sources of reionization. We show that the 21-cm anisotropy is best measured by the quadrupole moment of the power spectrum. We find that, unless the properties of the reionization sources are extreme in some way, the quadrupole moment evolves very predictably as a function of global neutral fraction. This predictability implies that redshift-space distortions are not a very sensitive tool for distinguishing between reionization sources. However, the quadrupole moment can be used as a model-independent probe for constraining the reionization history. We show that such measurements can be done to some extent by first-generation instruments such as LOFAR, while the SKA should be able to measure the reionization history using the quadrupole moment of the power spectrum to great accuracy., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 1 table. The line-of-sight direction in the redshifted 21-cm signal coming from the cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization is quite unique in many ways compared to any other cosmological signal. Different unique effects, such as the evolution history of the signal, non-linear peculiar velocities of the matter etc. will imprint their signature along the line-of-sight axis of the observed signal. One of the major goals of the future SKA-LOW radio interferometer is to observe the cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization through this 21-cm signal. It is thus important to understand how these various effects affect the signal for its actual detection and proper interpretation. For more than one and half decades, various groups in India have been actively trying to understand and quantify the different line-of-sight effects that are present in this signal through analytical models and simulations. In many ways the importance of this sub-field under 21-cm cosmology have been identified, highlighted and pushed forward by the Indian community. In this article, we briefly describe their contribution and implication of these effects in the context of the future surveys of the cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization that will be conducted by the SKA-LOW.

Detection of individual luminous sources during the reionization epoch and cosmic dawn through their signatures in the HI 21-cm signal is one of the direct approaches to probe the epoch. Here, we summarize our previous works on this and present preliminary results on the prospects of detecting such sources using the SKA1-low experiment. We first discuss the expected HI 21-cm signal around luminous sources at different stages of reionization and cosmic dawn. We then introduce two visibility based estimators for detecting such signal: one based on the matched filtering technique and the other relies on simply combing the visibility signal from different baselines and frequency channels. We find that that the SKA1-low should be able to detect ionized bubbles of radius $R_b \gtrsim 10$ Mpc with $\sim 100$ hr of observations at redshift $z \sim 8$ provided that the mean outside neutral Hydrogen fraction $ x_{\rm HI} \gtrsim 0.5$. We also investigate the possibility of detecting HII regions around known bright QSOs such as around ULASJ1120+0641 discovered by Mortlock et al. 2011. We find that a $5 \sigma$ detection is possible with $600$ hr of SKA1-low observations if the QSO age and the outside $ x_{\rm HI} $ are at least $\sim 2 \times 10^7$ Myr and $\sim 0.2$ respectively. Finally, we investigate the possibility of detecting the very first X-ray and Ly-$\alpha$ sources during the cosmic dawn. We consider mini-QSOs like sources which emits in X-ray frequency band. We find that with a total $\sim 1000$ hr of observations, SKA1-low should be able to detect those sources individually with a $\sim 9 \sigma$ significance at redshift $z=15$. We summarize how the SNR changes with various parameters related to the source properties.

Observations of redshifted 21-cm radiation from neutral hydrogen during the epoch of reionization (EoR) are considered to constitute the most promising tool to probe that epoch. One of the major goals of the first generation of low frequency radio telescopes is to measure the 3D 21-cm power spectrum. However, the 21-cm signal could evolve substantially along the line of sight (LOS) direction of an observed 3D volume, since the received signal from different planes transverse to the LOS originated from different look-back times and could therefore be statistically different. Using numerical simulations we investigate this so-called light cone effect on the spherically averaged 3D 21-cm power spectrum. For this version of the power spectrum, we find that the effect mostly `averages out' and observe a smaller change in the power spectrum compared to the amount of evolution in the mean 21-cm signal and its rms variations along the LOS direction. Nevertheless, changes up to 50% at large scales are possible. In general the power is enhanced/suppressed at large/small scales when the effect is included. The cross-over mode below/above which the power is enhanced/suppressed moves toward larger scales as reionization proceeds. When considering the 3D power spectrum we find it to be anisotropic at the late stages of reionization and on large scales. The effect is dominated by the evolution of the ionized fraction of hydrogen during reionization and including peculiar velocities hardly changes these conclusions. We present simple analytical models which explain qualitatively all the features we see in the simulations.

After the era of recombination, roughly 360 000 years after the big bang (redshift 1100), the universe was neutral, continued to expand and eventually the first gravitationally collapsed structures capable of forming stars, formed. Observations show that approximately 1 billion years later (redshift 6), the Universe had become highly ionized. The transition from a neutral intergalactic medium to a highly ionized one, is called the epoch of Reionization (EoR). Although quasar spectra and polarization power-spectra from cosmic microwave background experiments set some time-constrains on this epoch, the details of this process are currently not known. New radio telescopes operating at low frequencies aim at measuring directly the neutral hydrogen content between redshifts 6 - 10 via the HI spin-flip line at 21cm. The interpretation of these first measurements is not going to be trivial. Therefore, simulations of the EoR are useful to test the many ill-constrained parameters such as the properties of the sources responsible for reionization. This thesis contributes to such simulations. It addresses different source models and discusses different measures to quantify their effect on the shapes and sizes of the emerging H II regions. It also presents a new version of the widely used radiative transfer code C2-Ray which is capable of handling the ionizing radiation produced by energetic sources such as quasars. Using this new version we study whether 21cm experiments could detect the signature of a quasar. We find that different size measures of ionized regions can distinguish between different source models in the simulations and that a topological measure of the ionized fraction field confirms the inside-out (i.e. overdense regions ionize first) reionization scenario. We find that the HII regions from luminous quasars may be detectable in 21cm, but that it might not be possible to distinguish them from the largest HII regions produced by clustered galaxies.

Currently several low-frequency experiments are being planned to study the nature of the first stars using the redshifted 21-cm signal from the cosmic dawn and epoch of reionization. Using a one-dimensional radiative transfer code, we model the 21-cm signal pattern around the early sources for different source models, i.e., the metal-free Population III (PopIII) stars, primordial galaxies consisting of Population II (PopII) stars, mini-QSOs and high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). We investigate the detectability of these sources by comparing the 21-cm visibility signal with the system noise appropriate for a telescope like the SKA1-low. Upon integrating the visibility around a typical source over all baselines and over a frequency interval of 16 MHz, we find that it will be possible to make a $\sim 9-\sigma$ detection of the isolated sources like PopII galaxies, mini-QSOs and HMXBs at $z \sim 15$ with the SKA1-low in 1000 hours. The exact value of the signal to noise ratio (SNR) will depend on the source properties, in particular on the mass and age of the source and the escape fraction of ionizing photons. The predicted SNR decreases with increasing redshift. We provide simple scaling laws to estimate the SNR for different values of the parameters which characterize the source and the surrounding medium. We also argue that it will be possible to achieve a SNR $\sim 9$ even in the presence of the astrophysical foregrounds by subtracting out the frequency-independent component of the observed signal. The detection of ionized bubbles around quasars in redshifted 21-cm maps is possibly one of the most direct future probes of reionization. We consider two models for the growth of spherical ionized bubbles to study the apparent shapes of the bubbles in redshifted 21-cm maps, taking into account the finite light travel time (FLTT) across the bubble. We find that the FLTT, whose effect is particularly pronounced for large bubbles, causes the bubble's image to continue to grow well after it's actual growth is over. There are two distinct FLTT distortions in the bubble's image: (i) its apparent center is shifted along the line of sight (LOS) towards the observer from the quasar; (ii) it's shape is anisotropic along the LOS. The bubble initially appears elongated along the LOS. This is reversed in the later stages of growth where the bubble appears compressed. The FLTT distortions are expected to have an impact on matched filter bubble detection where it is most convenient to use a spherical template for the filter. We find that the best matched spherical filter gives a reasonably good estimate of the size and the shift in the center of the anisotropic image. The mismatch between the spherical filter and the anisotropic image causes a 10 - 20% degradation in the SNR relative to that of a spherical bubble. We conclude that a spherical filter is adequate for bubble detection. The FLTT distortions do not effect the lower limits for bubble detection with 1000 hr of GMRT observations. The smallest spherical filter for which a detection is possible has comoving radii 24 Mpc and 33 Mpc for a 3-sigma and 5-sigma detection respectively, assuming a neutral fraction 0.6 at z \sim 8.

Separating the cosmological redshifted 21-cm signal from foregrounds is a major challenge. We present the cross-correlation of the redshifted 21-cm emission from neutral hydrogen (HI) in the post-reionization era with the Ly-alpha forest as a new probe of the large scale matter distribution in the redshift range z=2 to 3 without the problem of foreground contamination. Though the 21-cm and the Ly-alpha forest signals originate from different astrophysical systems, they are both expected to trace the underlying dark matter distribution on large scales. The multi-frequency angular cross-correlation power spectrum estimator is found to be unaffected by the discrete quasar sampling, which only affects the noise in the estimate. We consider a hypothetical redshifted 21-cm observation in a single field of view 1.3 degrees (FWHM) centered at z=2.2 where the binned 21-cm angular power spectrum can be measured at an SNR of 3 sigma or better across the range 500 < l < 4000 . Keeping the parameters of the 21-cm observation fixed, we have estimated the SNR for the cross-correlation signal varying the quasar angular number density n of the Ly-alpha forest survey. Assuming that the spectra have SNR ~5 in pixels of length 44 km/s, we find that a 5 sigma detection of the cross-correlation signal is possible at 600 < l < 2000 with n=4 deg^{-2}. This value of n is well within the reach of upcoming Ly-alpha forest surveys. The cross-correlation signal will be a new, independent probe of the astrophysics of the diffuse IGM, the growth of structure and the expansion history of the Universe.

We model the distribution of neutral Hydrogen (HI hereafter) in the post-reionization universe. This model uses gravity only N-Body simulations and an ansatz to assign HI to dark matter haloes that is consistent with observational constraints and theoretical models. We resolve the smallest haloes that are likely to host HI in the simulations, care is also taken to ensure that any errors due to the finite size of the simulation box are small. We then compute the smoothed one point probability distribution function and the power spectrum of fluctuations in HI. This is compared with other predictions that have been made using different techniques. We highlight the significantly high bias for the HI distribution at small scales. This aspect has not been discussed before. We then discuss the prospects for detection with the MWA, GMRT and the hypothetical MWA5000. The MWA5000 can detect visibility correlations at large angular scales at all redshifts in the post-reionization era. The GMRT can detect visibility correlations at lower redshifts, specifically there is a strong case for a survey at z=1.3. We also discuss prospects for direct detection of rare peaks in the HI distribution using the GMRT. We show that direct detection should be possible with an integration time that is comparable to, or even less than, the time required for a statistical detection. Specifically, it is possible to make a statistical detection of the HI distribution by measuring the visibility correlation, and, direct detection of rare peaks in the HI distribution at z = 1.3 with the GMRT in less than 1000 hours of observations.

Extending the formalism of Datta, Bharadwaj & Choudhury (2007) for detecting ionized bubbles in redshifted 21 cm maps using a matched-filtering technique, we use different simulations to analyze the impact of HI fluctuations outside the bubble on the detectability of the bubble. In the first three kinds of simulations there is a spherical bubble of comoving radius R_b, the one that we are trying to detect, located at the center, and the neutral hydrogen (HI) outside the bubble traces the underlying dark matter distribution. We consider three different possible scenarios of reionization, i.e., (i) there is a single bubble (SB) in the field of view (FoV) and the hydrogen neutral fraction is constant outside this bubble (ii) patchy reionization with many small ionized bubbles in the FoV (PR1) and (iii) many spherical ionized bubbles of the same radius $R_b$ (PR2). The fourth kind of simulation uses more realistic maps based on semi-numeric modelling (SM) of ionized regions. We find that for both the SB and PR1 scenarios the fluctuating IGM restricts bubble detection to size R_b, 14 pages, 15 Postscript figures, Revised to incorporate ionization maps produced by the semi-numeric approach. Observations of redshifted 21cm radiation from HI at high redshifts is an important future probe of reionization. We consider the Multi-frequency Angular Power Spectrum (MAPS) to quantify the statistics of the HI signal as a joint function of the angular multipole l and frequency separation \Delta\nu. The signal at two different frequencies is expected to get decorrelated as \Delta\nu is increased, and quantifying this decorrelation is particularly important in deciding the frequency resolution for future HI observations. This is also expected to play a very crucial role in extracting the signal from foregrounds as the signal is expected to decorrelate much faster than the foregrounds (which are largely continuum sources) with increasing \Delta\nu. In this paper we develop formulae relating the MAPS to different components of the three dimensional HI power spectrum taking into account HI peculiar velocities. We show that the flat-sky approximation provides a very good representation over the angular scales of interest, and a final expression which is very simple to calculate and interpret. We present results considering two models for the HI distribution, namely, (i) DM: where the HI traces the dark matter and (ii) PR: where the effects of patchy reionization are incorporated through two parameters. We find that while the DM signal is largely featureless, the PR signal peaks at the angular scales of the individual bubbles, and the signal is considerably enhanced for large bubble size. For most cases of interest at l \sim 100 the signal is uncorrelated beyond \Delta\nu \sim 1 MHz or even less, whereas it occurs around \sim 0.1 MHz at l \sim 10^3. We provide an overview of 21cm tomography of the Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization as possible with SKA-Low. We show why tomography is essential for studying CD/EoR and present the scales which can be imaged at different frequencies for the different phases of SKA- Low. Next we discuss the different ways in which tomographic data can be analyzed. We end with an overview of science questions which can only be answered by tomography, ranging from the characterization of individual objects to understanding the global processes shaping the Universe during the CD/EoR, 14 pages, 3 figures. We investigate the possibility of detecting the 3D cross correlation power spectrum of the Ly-$\alpha$ forest and HI 21 cm signal from the post reionization epoch. The cross-correlation signal is directly dependent on the dark matter power spectrum and is sensitive to the 21-cm brightness temperature and Ly-$\alpha$ forest biases. These bias parameters dictate the strength of anisotropy in redshift space. We find that the cross-correlation power spectrum can be detected using $400 ~ \, \rm hrs$ observation with SKA-mid (phase 1) and a futuristic BOSS like experiment with a quasar (QSO) density of $30 ~ \rm deg^{-2}$ at a peak SNR of $15$ for a single field experiment at redshift $z = 2.5$. We also study the possibility of constraining various bias parameters using the cross power spectrum. We find that with the same experiment $1 \sigma$ conditional errors on the 21-cm linear redshift space distortion parameter $\beta_T$ and $\beta_{F}$ corresponding to the Ly-$\alpha $ forest are $\sim 2.7\%$ and $\sim 1.4 \%$ respectively for $10$ independent pointings of the SKA-mid (phase 1). This prediction indicates a significant improvement over existing measurements. We claim that the detection of the 3D cross correlation power spectrum will not only ascertain the cosmological origin of the signal in presence of astrophysical foregrounds but will also provide stringent constraints on large scale HI biases. Concerted effort is currently ongoing to open up the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) ($z\sim$15-6) for studies with IR and radio telescopes. Whereas IR detections have been made of sources (Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters, quasars and drop-outs) in this redshift regime in relatively small fields of view, no direct detection of neutral hydrogen, via the redshifted 21-cm line, has yet been established. Such a direct detection is expected in the coming years, with ongoing surveys, and could open up the entire universe from $z\sim$6-200 for astrophysical and cosmological studies, opening not only the EoR, but also its preceding Cosmic Dawn ($z\sim$30-15) and possibly even the later phases of the Dark Ages ($z\sim$200-30). All currently ongoing experiments attempt statistical detections of the 21-cm signal during the EoR, with limited signal-to-noise. Direct imaging, except maybe on the largest (degree) scales at lower redshifts, as well as higher redshifts will remain out of reach. The Square Kilometre Array(SKA) will revolutionize the field, allowing direct imaging of neutral hydrogen from scales of arc-minutes to degrees over most of the redshift range $z\sim$6-28 with SKA1-LOW, and possibly even higher redshifts with the SKA2-LOW. In this SKA will be unique, and in parallel provide enormous potential of synergy with other upcoming facilities (e.g. JWST). In this chapter we summarize the physics of 21-cm emission, the different phases the universe is thought to go through, and the observables that the SKA can probe, referring where needed to detailed chapters in this volume (Abridged).

Details of various unknown physical processes during the cosmic dawn and the epoch of reionization can be extracted from observations of the redshifted 21-cm signal. These observations, however, will be affected by the evolution of the signal along the line-of-sight which is known as the "light-cone effect". We model this effect by post-processing a dark matter $N-$body simulation with an 1-D radiative transfer code. We find that the effect is much stronger and dramatic in presence of inhomogeneous heating and Ly$\alpha$ coupling compared to the case where these processes are not accounted for. One finds increase (decrease) in the spherically averaged power spectrum up to a factor of 3 (0.6) at large scales ($k \sim 0.05\, \rm Mpc^{-1}$) when the light-cone effect is included, though these numbers are highly dependent on the source model. The effect is particularly significant near the peak and dip-like features seen in the power spectrum. The peaks and dips are suppressed and thus the power spectrum can be smoothed out to a large extent if the width of the frequency band used in the experiment is large. Measurements of the HI 21-cm power spectra from the reionization epoch will be influenced by the evolution of the signal along the line-of-sight direction of any observed volume. We use numerical as well as semi-numerical simulations of reionization in a cubic volume of 607 Mpc across to study this so-called light cone effect on the HI 21-cm power spectrum. We find that the light cone effect has the largest impact at two different stages of reionization: one when reionization is $\sim 20\%$ and other when it is $\sim 80\%$ completed. We find a factor of $\sim 4$ amplification of the power spectrum at the largest scale available in our simulations. We do not find any significant anisotropy in the 21-cm power spectrum due to the light cone effect. We argue that for the power spectrum to become anisotropic, the light cone effect would have to make the ionized bubbles significantly elongated or compressed along the line-of-sight, which would require extreme reionization scenarios. We also calculate the two-point correlation functions parallel and perpendicular to the line-of-sight and find them to differ. Finally, we calculate an optimum frequency bandwidth below which the light cone effect can be neglected when extracting power spectra from observations. We find that if one is willing to accept a $10 \%$ error due to the light cone effect, the optimum frequency bandwidth for $k= 0.056 \, \rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ is $\sim 7.5$ MHz. For $k = 0.15$ and $0.41 \, \rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ the optimum bandwidth is $\sim 11$ and $\sim 16$ MHz respectively., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS, minor changes

The 21 cm brightness temperature $\delta T_{\rm b}$ fluctuations from reionization promise to provide information on the physical processes during that epoch. We present a formalism for generating the $\delta T_{\rm b}$ distribution using dark matter simulations and an one-dimensional radiative transfer code. Our analysis is able to account for the spin temperature $T_{\rm S}$ fluctuations arising from inhomogeneous X-ray heating and Ly$\alpha$ coupling during cosmic dawn. The $\delta T_{\rm b}$ power spectrum amplitude at large scales ($k \sim 0.1$ Mpc$^{-1}$) is maximum when $\sim 10\%$ of the gas (by volume) is heated above the CMB temperature. The power spectrum shows a "bump"-like feature during cosmic dawn and its location measures the typical sizes of heated regions. We find that the effect of peculiar velocities on the power spectrum is negligible at large scales for most part of the reionization history. During early stages (when the volume averaged ionization fraction $\lesssim 0.2$) this is because the signal is dominated by fluctuations in $T_{\rm S}$. For reionization models that are solely driven by stars within high mass ($\gtrsim 10^9\, \rm M_{\odot}$) haloes, the peculiar velocity effects are prominent only at smaller scales ($k \gtrsim 0.4$ Mpc$^{-1}$) where patchiness in the neutral hydrogen density dominates the signal. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) will have a low frequency component (SKA-low) which has as one of its main science goals the study of the redshifted 21cm line from the earliest phases of star and galaxy formation in the Universe. This 21cm signal provides a new and unique window on both the formation of the first stars and accreting black holes and the later period of substantial ionization of the intergalactic medium. The signal will teach us fundamental new things about the earliest phases of structure formation, cosmology and even has the potential to lead to the discovery of new physical phenomena. One of the most promising ways to study the epoch of reionization (EoR) is through radio observations of the redshifted 21-cm line emission from neutral hydrogen. These observations are complicated by the fact that the mapping of redshifts to line-of-sight positions is distorted by the peculiar velocities of the gas. Such distortions can be a source of error if they are not properly understood, but they also encode information about cosmology and astrophysics. We study the effects of redshift space distortions on the power spectrum of 21-cm radiation from the EoR using large scale $N$-body and radiative transfer simulations. We quantify the anisotropy introduced in the 21-cm power spectrum by redshift space distortions and show how it evolves as reionization progresses and how it relates to the underlying physics. We go on to study the effects of redshift space distortions on LOFAR observations, taking instrument noise and foreground subtraction into account. We find that LOFAR should be able to directly observe the power spectrum anisotropy due to redshift space distortions at spatial scales around $k \sim 0.1$ Mpc$^{-1}$ after $\gtrsim$ 1000 hours of integration time. At larger scales, sample errors become a limiting factor, while at smaller scales detector noise and foregrounds make the extraction of the signal problematic. Finally, we show how the astrophysical information contained in the evolution of the anisotropy of the 21-cm power spectrum can be extracted from LOFAR observations, and how it can be used to distinguish between different reionization scenarios., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The 21cm background from the epoch of reionization is a promising cosmological probe: line-of-sight velocity fluctuations distort redshift, so brightness fluctuations in Fourier space depend upon angle, which linear theory shows can separate cosmological from astrophysical information. Nonlinear fluctuations in ionization, density and velocity change this, however. The validity and accuracy of the separation scheme are tested here for the first time, by detailed reionization simulations. The scheme works reasonably well early in reionization (< 40% ionized), but not late (> 80% ionized)., 2 figures, matches published PRL version

Large-scale reionization simulations are described which combine the results of cosmological N-body simulations that model the evolving density and velocity fields and identify the galactic halo sources, with ray-tracing radiative transfer calculations which model the nonequilibrium ionization of the intergalactic medium. These simulations have been used to predict some of the signature effects of reionization on cosmic radiation backgrounds, including the CMB, near-IR, and redshifted 21cm backgrounds. Dark halo substructure may reveal itself through secondary, small-scale gravitational lensing effects on light sources that are macrolensed by a foreground galaxy. Here, we explore the prospects of using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations of multiply-imaged quasar jets to search for submilliarcsecond-scale image distortions produced by various forms of dark substructures in the 1e3-1e8 Msolar mass range. We present lensing simulations relevant for the angular resolutions attainable with the existing European VLBI Network (EVN), the global VLBI array, and an upcoming observing mode in which the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) is connected to the global VLBI array. While observations of this type would not be sensitive to standard cold dark matter subhalos, they can be used to detect more compact forms of halo substructure predicted in alternative structure formation scenarios. By mapping ~5 strongly lensed systems, it should be possible to detect or robustly rule out primordial black holes in the 1e3-1e6 Msolar mass range if they constitute >1% percent of the dark matter in these lenses. Ultracompact minihalos are harder to detect using this technique, but 1e6-1e8 Msolar ultracompact minihalos could in principle be detected if they constitute >10% of the dark matter., 13 pages, 8 figures; v.2 accepted for publication in MNRAS

The detection of individual ionized bubbles in HI 21-cm maps is one of the most promising, direct probes of the epoch of reionization(EoR). Atleast 1000 hrs of observation would be required for such a detection with either the currently functioning GMRT or the upcoming MWA. Considering the large investment of telescope time it is essential to identify the``optimal redshift'' where the prospects of a detection are most favourable. We find that the optimal redshift is determined by a combination of instrument dependent factors and the evolution of the neutral fraction x_HI. We find that the redshift range 8.1 +/- 1.1 and 9.8 +/- 1 are optimum for detecting ionized bubbles with the GMRT and MWA respectively. The prospects of a detection, we find, are more favourable in a scenario with late reionization with x_HI \approx 0.5 at z \approx 7.5 as compared to an early reionization model where x_HI \approx 0.5 at z \approx 10. In the late reionization scenario, for both instruments a 3 \sigma detection is possible for bubbles of comoving radius R_b>= 30 Mpc with 1000 hrs of observation. Future observations will either lead to the detection of ionized bubbles, or in the event of non-detection, lead to constraints on the product x_HI R_b^\gamma for the observational volume, where \gamma=1.5 and 2 for GMRT and MWA respectively., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, minor changes, typos corrected, accepted by MNRAS LETTERS

The reionization of the Universe, it is believed, occurred by the growth of ionized regions (bubbles) in the neutral intergalactic medium (IGM). We study the possibility of detecting these bubbles in radio-interferometric observations of redshifted neutral hydrogen (HI) 21 cm radiation. The signal 1 mJy will be buried in noise and foregrounds, the latter being at least a few orders of magnitude stronger than the signal. We develop a visibility based formalism that uses a filter to optimally combine the entire signal from a bubble while minimizing the noise and foreground contributions. This formalism makes definite predictions on the ability to detect an ionized bubble or conclusively rule out its presence in a radio- interferometric observation. We make predictions for the currently functioning GMRT and a forthcoming instrument, the MWA at a frequency of 150 MHz (corresponding to a redshift of 8.5). For both instruments, we show that a 3 sigma detection will be possible for a bubble of comoving radius R_b > 40 Mpc (assuming it to be spherical) in 100 hrs of observation and R_b 22 Mpc in 1000 hrs of observation, provided the bubble is at the center of the field of view. In both these cases the filter effectively removes the expected foreground contribution so that it is below the signal, and the system noise is the deciding criteria. We find that there is a fundamental limitation on the smallest bubble that can be detected arising from the statistical fluctuations in the HI distribution. Assuming that the HI traces the dark matter we find that it will not be possible to detect bubbles with R_b < 8 Mpc using the GMRT and R_b < 16 Mpc using the MWA, however large be the integration time., 11 pages, 10 figures, 1 table.
