5. Global HI profiles of spiral galaxies

Abstract

In this paper we present short HI synthesis observations of 57 galaxies without HI information in the RC3. These are a by-product of a large survey with the WSRT of the neutral hydrogen gas in spiral and irregular galaxies. Global profiles and related quantities are given for the 42 detected galaxies and upper limits for the remaining 15. A number of galaxies have low values of HI mass-to-blue luminosity ratio., Comment: A LATEX file without figures. Abstract

Collaborative assessment methods (CAMs) involve working with clients during all phases of the assessment process, from goal definition to interpretation of the testing results to the recommendations and conclusions. In this article, we define CAMs, provide clinical examples, and then meta-analyze the published literature to assess their effectiveness on distal treatment outcomes. Our meta-analytic results indicate that CAMs have positive effects on three outcome domains: a moderate effect on treatment processes, a small-to-moderate effect on personal growth, and a small effect on symptom reduction. There is little research evidence on the immediate, in-session effects of CAMs. We include diversity considerations, training implications. and therapeutic practices grounded in this research evidence.

11. Maintenance ketamine treatment for depression: A systematic review of efficacy, safety, and tolerability

Item does not contain fulltext, Ketamine has rapid yet often transient antidepressant effects in patients with treatment-resistant depression. Different strategies have been proposed to prolong these effects. Maintenance ketamine treatment appears promising, but little is known about its efficacy, safety, and tolerability in depression. We searched Pubmed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library and identified three randomised controlled trials, eight open-label trials, and 30 case series and reports on maintenance ketamine treatment. We found intravenous, intranasal, oral, and possibly intramuscular and subcutaneous maintenance ketamine treatment to be effective in sustaining antidepressant effect in treatment-resistant depression. Tachyphylaxis, cognitive impairment, addiction, and serious renal and urinary problems seem uncommon. Despite the methodological limitations, we conclude that from a clinical view, maintenance ketamine treatment seems to be of therapeutic potential. We recommend both controlled and naturalistic studies with long-term follow-up and sufficient power to determine the position of maintenance ketamine treatment within routine clinical practice.

20. Ketamine treatment for depression in patients with a history of psychosis or current psychotic symptoms: A systematic review

Item does not contain fulltext, Objective: Ketamine shows rapid and robust antidepressant effects in clinical studies. Psychotic features are an exclusion criterion in most ketamine treatment studies based on the assumption that psychosis will increase with ketamine administration. As patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) often have psychotic features, and treatment-resistant depressive symptoms are also common in patients with schizophrenia, the aim of this systematic review is to determine whether this assumption holds true. Data Sources: The literature was searched for data on ketamine treatment for depression or negative symptomatology in patients with a history of psychosis or current psychotic symptoms (PubMed/MEDLINE) from inception to March 2020 without date or language restrictions. The following terms were used: ketamine and psychosis, psychotic or schizo*. A filter for human studies was applied. Study Selection: A total of 482 articles were identified; 473 articles were excluded because they did not report on the effect of ketamine treatment in patients with a history of psychosis or current psychotic symptoms. Data Extraction: The remaining 9 articles were reviewed. Results: Nine reports of pilot studies and case reports with a total of 41 patients have been published. These studies suggest that short-term ketamine treatment for depression and even negative symptoms in patients with a history of psychosis or current psychotic features can be both safe and effective, as side effects were mild and self-limiting. Conclusions: The currently available literature does not support the assumption that ketamine will exacerbate psychotic symptoms in predisposed patients. Data, however, are limited, and further trials are needed in this patient group.

Abstract

Background: The relative new subspecialty ‘cardio-oncology’ was established to meet the growing demand for an interdisciplinary approach to the management of cancer therapy–related cardiovascular adverse events. In recent years, specialised cardio-oncology services have been implemented worldwide, which all strive to improve the cardiovascular health of cancer patients. However, limited data are currently available on the outcomes and experiences of these specialised services, and optimal strategies for cardio-oncological care have not been established. Aim: The ONCOR registry has been created for prospective data collection and evaluation of cardio-oncological care in daily practice. Methods: Dutch hospitals using a standardised cardio-oncology care pathway are included in this national, multicentre, observational cohort study. All patients visiting these cardio-oncology services are eligible for study inclusion. Data collection at baseline consists of the (planned) cancer treatment and the cardiovascular risk profile, which are used to estimate the cardiotoxic risk. Information regarding invasive and noninvasive tests is collected during the time patients receive cardio-oncological care. Outcome data consist of the incidence of cardiovascular complications and major adverse cardiac events, and the impact of these events on the oncological treatment. Discussion: Outcomes of the ONCOR registry may aid in gaining more insight into the incidence of cancer therapy–related cardiovascular complications. The registry facilitates research on mechanisms of cardiovascular complications and on diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic strategies. In addition, it provides a platform for future (interventional) studies. Centres with cardio-oncology services that are interested in contributing to the ONCOR registry are hereby invited to participate.

ACHTERGROND Therapieresistentie komt voor bij ongeveer 30% van de patiënten met een depressie. Er is dan ook grote behoefte aan nieuwe behandelmogelijkheden. Ketamine, oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld als anestheticum, wordt onderzocht en incidenteel reeds toegepast bij patiënten met een therapieresistente depressieve stoornis. DOEL Kritische beschouwing over het huidige gebruik van ketamine als antidepressivum. METHODE Literatuuronderzoek. RESULTATEN Een kortdurend antidepressief effect van ketamine is aangetoond. Veel minder is bekend over het in stand houden van dit effect, de potentiële risico’s van herhaalde toediening, en de effectiefste toedieningsmethoden en behandelschema’s. CONCLUSIE Aanvullend onderzoek naar ketamine als antidepressivum blijft noodzakelijk. Eventuele (offlabel-) behandeling dient in de tussentijd alleen onder voorbehoud van zorgvuldige patiëntselectie en strikte monitoring te worden toegepast. BACKGROUND Treatment-resistance occurs in about 30% of patients with depression. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify new treatment strategies. Ketamine, originally developed as an anesthetic, is studied and applied as treatment for patients with treatment-resistant depression. AIM A critical review of the current use of ketamine as an antidepressant. METHOD Literature study. RESULTS Ketamine is a proven effective acute antidepressant. However, limited information is available about maintenance of effect of ketamine, potential risks of repeated administration, and different routes of administration and treatment schedules. CONCLUSION Additional research on ketamine as an antidepressant is needed. Meanwhile, (off-label) treatment should only be applied after careful patient selection and under close monitoring.

Abstract

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and obesity are associated with frequent exacerbations and poor quality of life in asthmatics. Multiple mechanisms have been proposed for the effect of obesity, including modification of inflammation affecting epithelial cell proliferation and wound repair, while the role of GORD is poorly understood and proton pump inhibitor (PPI) are of variable efficacy. GORD might exert a deleterious effect by inducing vagal reflex, neuroinflammation and directly ( via microaspiration) triggering airway inflammation. Studies of reflux in animal models and human bronchial epithelial cell culture show varying impact on inflammation and airway remodelling. Abstract

Introduction: Both guided online and individual face-to-face cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) are effective in improving insomnia symptoms and sleep efficiency. Little is known about the underlying mechanisms generating this effect. The present study tests the assumption that pre-sleep arousal, sleep-related worry and dysfunctional beliefs about sleep are mediators in the effect of cognitive behavioral treatment for insomnia. Methods: A secondary analysis was performed on data previously collected from a randomized controlled trial (N = 90). In this trial, participants were randomized to either a face-to-face CBT-I condition, an internet-delivered CBT-I condition, or a wait-list group. This article reports on the efficacy of these interventions on pre-sleep arousal, sleep-related worry, and dysfunctional beliefs. Furthermore, we investigated whether these measures mediated the treatment effect on insomnia severity and sleep efficiency. Results: Both treatment modalities were efficacious for these cognitive measures; however, face-to-face treatment showed superiority over the online treatment. All three cognitive measures mediated the effect on insomnia severity. Sleep-related worry and pre-sleep arousal mediated the effect on sleep efficiency, but dysfunctional beliefs did not. Conclusion: Overall, these results point toward the importance of cognitive processes in the treatment of insomnia, implying that psychological treatments for insomnia may best be guided by (also) targeting these cognitive processes.

39. Comparison of two-dimensional and three-dimensional beach profiles

Abstract

Scale effects are always a major concern in mobile-bed hydraulic-model studies. These scale effects can be minimized by using large models (i.e., almost prototype size), but large models require large and costly modeling facilities. Several large 'super flumes' have been built for two-dimensional (2D) testing, but right now a comparable large 'super basin' does not exist. Thus, beach processes can be tested in large 2D models, but not yet in three-dimensional (3D) models. The research in super flumes assumes that 2D-wave-flume experiments are representative of the 3D prototypes. Two aspects of that assumption are tested in this paper. Six sets of parallel tests were performed in both a 3D wave basin and a 2D wave flume. It was found that the time scales for morphological development are adequately modeled in the 2D flume, and that there are some differences in the resulting beach profile shapes. The 3D profiles correspond closely with the prototype observations; the 2D profiles are affected by exaggerated turbulence generated when the incoming wave and the downrush of the previous waves meet head-on. The use of the term equilibrium for fluid flow, sediment flow, and profile formation is also discussed in this paper.

Abstract

For a large series of hydraulic model tests performed at Queen's University, wave heights from deep water through the breaking zone can be described quite simply by linear shoaling, refraction, and friction, combined with a breaking criterion and one single-wave-decay calculation based on excess energy. This wave-decay model was verified with other hydraulic-model tests and applied to field results. Comparison with prototype results showed several inconsistencies. The field data indicated that nonlinear shoaling is sometimes required while linear shoaling is perfectly adequate for other cases. It was not possible to determine clearly when to use nonlinear shoaling. The energy dissipation rate for some field data was similar to that found in the hydraulic models, while for other field data sets the energy dissipation rate was much smaller. The difference in behavior of seemingly similar data sets cannot be readily explained by common parameters such as wave steepness and surf similarity. The field data also showed the need to incorporate spectral saturation in the calculations.

Abstract

L-aminopeptidase from Pseudomonas putida ATCC 12633 is purified to homogeneity, and the analysis of its characteristic features reveals that this enzyme exhibits exceptional physiochemical properties, substrate specificity and enhanced emantioselectivity. Increased L-emantioselectivity is shown by the enzyme system toward both aromatic and aliphatic alpha-H amino acid amide. It has enhanced substrate specificity for alpha-H amino acid amides and dipeptides.

De data zijn afkomstig van 377 overwegend vrouwelijke deelnemers aan een randomized waiting-list controlled trial naar de effectiviteit van een mindfulness-app. De 15-item totaalschaal vertoonde een goede test-hertestbetrouwbaarheid en een acceptabele interne consistentie, en hing samen met vragenlijsten voor mindfulness en algemene psychiatrische klachten, zoals a priori werd verwacht. Geconcludeerd wordt dat de totaalschaal voorlopig geschikt lijkt voor gebruik als (bij voorkeur nog secundaire) uitkomstmaat in onderzoek naar interventies die bredere effecten beogen dan verbeteringen van symptomen of stoornissen alleen. Het klinisch gebruik op individueel niveau en het gebruik van subschalen raden wij in afwachting van verder onderzoek vooralsnog af. -- The present study investigated several psychometric characteristics of the Dutch translation of the Short Index of Self-Actualization (SISA-NL). Data were obtained from 377 predominantly female participants in a randomized waiting-list controlled trial that investigated the effectiveness of a mindfulness-app. The 15-item total scale demonstrated good test-retest reliability and acceptable internal consistency, and correlated with measures of mindfulness and general psychiatric complaints as a priori expected. It is concluded that the total scale of the SISA-NL can be used as a (preferably secondary) outcome measure in studies of interventions that aim to achieve broader effects than improvements of symptoms or disorders. Pending further research, we do not recommend its clinical use in individual cases or the use of subscales.
