Abstract

Remote control systems are becoming more and more important to give us the flexibility to control facilities, provide assistance and intervene in case of problems at any time and from every place. As a global operating group CALICE [2] with approx. 220 members worldwide is dependent on using a remote control system for shifts and monitoring of the data taking. CALICE has at present installed its detector at Fermilab, Chicago, where will run test beam experiments for the next year. Abstract

Free electron LASer in Hamburg (FLASH) at DESY is a user facility with laser-like radiation source in the VUV and soft X-ray range. It is also a pilot facility for the future XFEL. A fast data acquisition system (DAQ) to support the accelerator operation and the user experiments was developed. The system collects data from hundreds of ADC channels in the range of 1M up to 2G samples per second. In addition it allows collecting images from digital video cameras. All the data is collected in a shared memory of a central multiprocessor computer. Several processes are used to calculate e.g., the orbit, energy or photon flux, or are used as feedback loops to improve the stability of the linac. A long time archiving of the collected data from the accelerator and from the FEL experiments on a 24 TB disk and finally on a tape is provided. The whole system is integrated in the DOOCS control system of FLASH. It is a novel approach to combine a fast DAQ system with a accelerator control system. Abstract

Extreme-ultraviolet to x-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) in operation for scientific applications are up to now single-user facilities. While most FELs generate around 100 photon pulses per second, FLASH at DESY can deliver almost two orders of magnitude more pulses in this time span due to its superconducting accelerator technology. This makes the facility a prime candidate to realize the next step in FELs—dividing the electron pulse trains into several FEL lines and delivering photon pulses to several users at the same time. Hence, FLASH has been extended with a second undulator line and self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) is demonstrated in both FELs simultaneously. FLASH can now deliverMHzpulse trains to two user experiments in parallel with individually selected photon beam characteristics. First results of the capabilities of this extension are shown with emphasis on independent variation of wavelength, repetition rate, and photon pulse length.

Abstract

We report results on the performance of a free electron laser operating at a wavelength of 13.7 nm where unprecedented peak and average powers for a coherent EUV radiation source have been measured. In the saturation regime the peak energy approached 170 μJ for individual pulses while the average energy per pulse reached 70 μJ. The pulse duration was in the region of 10 femtoseconds and peak powers of 10 GW were achieved. At a pulse repetition frequency of 700 pulses per second, the average EUV power reached 20 mW. The output beam also contained a significant contribution from odd harmonics of approximately 0.6% and 0.03% for the 3rd (4.6 nm) and the 5th (2.75 nm) harmonics, respectively. At 2.75 nanometers the 5th harmonic of the radiation reaches deep into the water window – a wavelength range that is crucially important for the investigation of biological samples.

Abstract

This report contains a comprehensive technical description of a new international research infrastructure, the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) Facility. It was written between October 2005 and June 2006 and provides a realistic cost estimate and a compelling assessment of the scientific pay-off. The report has been prepared with the contribution of hundreds of people from many laboratories in Europe and even beyond. Their contributions have been harmonised and merged by many editors, and the whole effort has been coordinated by the European Project Team, generously supported and hosted by the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) laboratory.

Abstract

5 pp. (2002)., The Free-Electron Laser (FEL) at the TESLA Test Facility at DESY operates in the self-amplified spontaneous emission mode and generates sub-100-fs radiation pulses in the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region. During operation in the saturation regime, radiation pulses with GW peak power are produced. The statistical properties of the FEL radiation have been studied for different amplification regimes as well as behind a narrow-band monochromator and found to be in good agreement with the results of numerical simulations. Information about the spectral and temporal structure of the FEL radiation has been deduced from the statistical properties. The pulse duration of the FEL radiation can be varied by tailoring the electron bunch that drives the FEL.

Abstract

Many coherent imaging applications that utilize ultrafast X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) radiation pulses are highly sensitive to fluctuations in the shot-to-shot statistical properties of the source. Understanding and modelling these fluctuations are key to successful experiment planning and necessary to maximize the potential of XFEL facilities. Current models of XFEL radiation and their shot-to-shot statistics are based on theoretical descriptions of the source and are limited in their ability to capture the shot-to-shot intensity fluctuations observed experimentally. The lack of accurate temporal statistics in simulations that utilize these models is a significant barrier to optimizing and interpreting data from XFEL coherent diffraction experiments. Presented here is a phenomenological model of XFEL radiation that is capable of capturing the shot-to-shot statistics observed experimentally using a simple time-dependent approximation of the pulse wavefront. The model is applied to reproduce non-stationary shot-to-shot intensity fluctuations observed at the European XFEL, whilst accurately representing the single-shot properties predicted by FEL theory. Compared with previous models, this approach provides a simple, robust and computationally inexpensive method of generating statistical representations of XFEL radiation., (open access.)

Abstract

Characterizing the properties of X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) sources is a critical step for optimization of performance and experiment planning. The recent availability of MHz XFELs has opened up a range of new opportunities for novel experiments but also highlighted the need for systematic measurements of the source properties. Here, MHz-enabled beam imaging diagnostics developed for the SPB/SFX instrument at the European XFEL are exploited to measure the shot-to-shot intensity statistics of X-ray pulses. The ability to record pulse-integrated two-dimensional transverse intensity measurements at multiple planes along an XFEL beamline at MHz rates yields an improved understanding of the shot-to-shot photon beam intensity variations. These variations can play a critical role, for example, in determining the outcome of single-particle imaging experiments and other experiments that are sensitive to the transverse profile of the incident beam. It is observed that shot-to-shot variations in the statistical properties of a recorded ensemble of radiant intensity distributions are sensitive to changes in electron beam current density. These changes typically occur during pulse-distribution to the instrument and are currently not accounted for by the existing suite of imaging diagnostics. Modulations of the electron beam orbit in the accelerator are observed to induce a time-dependence in the statistics of individual pulses - this is demonstrated by applying radio-frequency trajectory tilts to electron bunch-trains delivered to the instrument. We discuss how these modifications of the beam trajectory might be used to modify the statistical properties of the source and potential future applications., (open access.)
