The magnetism of Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ from $x$ = 0.09 to $x$ = 0.91 with andalusite structure was examined. The magnetic properties of Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ at low temperatures were found to be weak ferromagnetic-like state for $x$ $<$ 0.3 and spin-glass state for $x$ $>$ 0.3. The small spontaneous magnetization that appears in the weak ferromagnetic-like phase would be due to the presence of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction or to the difference in the magnitude of the magnetic moment of Fe$^{3+}$ in the octahedral and trigonal bipyramidal sites. The appearance of the spin-glass phase indicates that the dilution of Fe ions by Al ions in Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ causes the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. The $x$ dependence of the site occupancy of Fe ions suggests that Fe$_2$GeO$_5$ with andalusite structure cannot be synthesized., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figure

In the quest of finding novel and efficient batteries, a great interest has raised in K-based honeycomb layer oxide materials both for their fundamental properties and potential applications. A key issue in the realization of efficient batteries based on such compounds, is to understand the K-ion diffusion mechanism. However, investigation of potassium-ion (K$^+$) dynamics in materials using magneto-spin properties has so far been challenging, due to its inherently weak nuclear magnetic moment, in contrast to other alkali ions such as lithium and sodium. Spin-polarised muons, having a high gyromagnetic ratio, make the muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$+SR) technique ideal for probing ions dynamics in weak magneto-spin moment materials. Here we report the magnetic properties and K+ dynamics in honeycomb layered oxide material of the K$_2$Ni$_2$TeO$_6$ using $\mu$+SR measurements. Our low-temperature $\mu$+SR results together with, with complementary magnetic susceptibility, find an antiferromagnetic transition at 26 K. Further $\mu$+SR studies performed at higher temperatures reveal that potassium ions (K$^+$) become mobile above 250 K and the activation energy for the diffusion process is Ea = 121(13) meV. This is the first time that K+ dynamics in potassium-based battery materials has been measured using $\mu$+SR. Finally our results also indicate an interesting possibility that K-ion self diffusion occurs predominantly at the surface of the powder particles. High-resolution time-of-flight powder neutron diffraction and high-field magnetization were measured to investigate the magnetic structure and existence of a field-induced magnetic phase transition in the distorted kagome antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Upon cooling from room temperature, the compound undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_\textrm{t}=185$ K from the rhombohedral space group $R\bar{3}m$ with the perfect kagome spin network to the monoclinic space group $P2_1/n$ with the distorted kagome planes. The distortion results in three inequivalent exchange interactions among the $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ spins that magnetically order below $T_\textrm{N}=20.2$ K. Magnetization measured with a magnetic field applied within the kagome plane reveals small in-plane ferromagnetism resulting from spin canting. On the other hand, the out-of-plane magnetization does not show a clear hysteresis loop of the ferromagnetic component nor a prominent anomaly up to 170 T, with the exception of the subtle knee-like bend around 90 T, which could indicate the 1/3 magnetization plateau. The combined analysis using the irreducible representations of the magnetic space groups and magnetic structure refinement on the neutron powder diffraction data suggests that the magnetic moments order in the magnetic space group $P2_1'/n'$ with the all-in-all-out spin structure, which by symmetry allows for the in-plane canting, consistent with the in-plane ferromagnetism observed in the magnetization., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, published version with typos corrected

We determined the magnetic structure of CuCr$_2$O$_4$ using neutron diffraction and irreducible representation analysis. The measurements identified a new phase between 155 K and 125 K as nearly collinear magnetic ordering in the Cr pyrochlore lattice. Below 125 K, a Cu-Cr ferrimagnetic component develops the noncollinear order. Along with the simultaneously obtained O positions and the quantum effect of spin-orbit coupling, the magnetic structure is understood to involve spin-orbit ordering, accompanied by an appreciably deformed orbital of presumably spin-only Cu and Cr.

Spin-state transition, also known as spin crossover, plays a key role in diverse systems, including minerals and biological materials. In theory, the boundary range between the low- and high-spin states is expected to enrich the transition and give rise to unusual physical states. However, no compound that realizes a nearly degenerate critical range as the ground state without requiring special external conditions has yet been experimentally identified. This study reports that, by comprehensive measurements of macroscopic physical properties, X-ray diffractometry, and neutron spectroscopy, the Sc substitution in LaCoO$_3$ destabilizes its nonmagnetic low-spin state and generates an anomalous paramagnetic state accompanied by the enhancement of transport gap and magneto-lattice-expansion as well as the contraction of Co--O distance with the increase of electron site-transfer. These phenomena are not well described by the mixture of conventional low- and high-spin states, but by their quantum superposition occurring on the verge of a spin-state transition. We have investigated the crystal structure of LaOBiPbS3 using neutron diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. From structural refinements, we found that the two metal sites, occupied by Bi and Pb, were differently surrounded by the sulfur atoms. Calculated bond valence sum suggested that one metal site was nearly trivalent and the other was nearly divalent. Neutron diffraction also revealed site selectivity of Bi and Pb in the LaOBiPbS3 structure. These results suggested that the crystal structure of LaOBiPbS3 can be regarded as alternate stacks of the rock-salt-type Pb-rich sulfide layers and the LaOBiS2-type Bi-rich layers. From band calculations for an ideal (LaOBiS2)(PbS) system, we found that the S bands of the PbS layer were hybridized with the Bi bands of the BiS plane at around the Fermi energy, which resulted in the electronic characteristics different from that of LaOBiS2. Stacking the rock-salt type sulfide (chalcogenide) layers and the BiS2-based layered structure could be a new strategy to exploration of new BiS2-based layered compounds, exotic two-dimensional electronic states, or novel functionality., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

DyB4 has a two-dimensional Shastry-Sutherland (Sh-S) lattice with strong Ising character of the Dy ions. Despite the intrinsic frustrations, surprisingly, it undergoes two successive transitions: a magnetic ordering at TN = 20K, and a quadrupole ordering at TQ=12.5 K. From high-resolution neutron and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction studies, we have obtained full structural information on this material in all phases, and demonstrate that structural modifications occurring at quadrupolar transition lead to the lifting of frustrations inherent in the Sh-S model. Our study thus provides a complete experimental picture of how the intrinsic frustration of the Sh-S lattice can be lifted by the coupling to quadrupole moments. Pb(Fe$_{0.5}$Nb$_{0.5}$)O$_3$ (PFN), one of the few relaxor multiferroic systems, has a $G$-type antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N$ = 143 K and a ferroelectric transition at $T_C$ = 385 K. By using high-resolution neutron-diffraction experiments and a total scattering technique, we paint a comprehensive picture of the long- and short-range structures of PFN: (i) a clear sign of short-range structural correlation above $T_C$, (ii) no sign of the negative thermal expansion behavior reported in a previous study, and (iii) clearest evidence thus far of magnetoelectric coupling below $T_N$. We conclude that at the heart of the unusual relaxor multiferroic behavior lies the disorder between Fe$^{3+}$ and Nb$^{5+}$ atoms. SrRuO3 is a ferromagnetic metal with several unusual physical properties such as zero thermal expansion below Tc, so-called Invar behavior. Another anomalous feature is that the a-axis lattice constant is larger than the b-axis lattice constant, a clear deviation from the predictions of the Glazer structural description with rigid RuO6 octahedron motion. Using high resolution neutron diffraction techniques, we show how these two structural anomalies arise from the irregular in-plane deformation, i.e. plastic behavior of the RuO6 octahedron, a weak band Jahn-Teller distortion. We further demonstrate that the ferromagnetic instability of SrRuO3 is related to the temperature-induced localization of Ru 4d bands., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. J. Phys.: Condens.
