Similarity among plants is explained by evolutionary history and can mediate the selection that human populations make of such resources. Ethnobotanical data were collected through semi-structured interviews with a total of 25 key informants. Locally important plants were evaluated by calculating their Use Value. A phylogenetic tree of the entire set of species cited by the participants was generated to analyze the phylogenetic signal of useful plants. A total of 41 species were cited and classified into nine uses. Our data set indicated that the cited plants are not randomly distributed among botanical families. The use of plants may be driven by the similarity of attributes between species. The phylogenetic signal test indicated that there is high representation of phylogenetic lineages among ethnobotanical uses. We suggest that similar plants tend to have similar utilitarian functions, and perhaps this is the criterion which directs plant selection by local populations.

O presente estudo registrou o uso de espécies medicinais da família Cactaceae, com o objetivo de realizar um levantamento sobre a versatilidade, consenso de uso e importância das espécies, em seis comunidades rurais do semiárido do nordeste do Brasil. Os usos medicinais foram registrados a partir de entrevistas semiestruturadas com 182 chefes de família. A avaliação do conhecimento foi realizada através dos índices de Importância Relativa (IR) e Frequência Relativa de Citação (FRC). Para avaliação dos sistemas corporais com maior importância local foi utilizado o Fator de Consenso dos Informantes (FCI). Foram registradas seis espécies de Cactaceae de uso medicinal: Cereus jamacaru jamacaru (115 citações), Melocactus sp. (120), Opuntia ficus indica (5), Pilosocereus gounellei (19), Pilosocereus sp. (4) e Tacinga inamoena (4). O cálculo da Importância Relativa demonstrou que a espécie mais versátil foi C. jamacaru jamacaru (IR = 2). Com relação ao índice FRC a espécie Melocactus sp. obteve destaque (FRC = 0,56). A partir do cálculo do FCI o Transtorno do sistema respiratório (FCI = 0,96) obteve o maior valor. Portanto, foi possível observar que as comunidades rurais estudadas compartilham de um conhecimento relativamente síncrono em relação às espécies medicinais de Cactaceae pois, a maioria das citações foram para usos medicinais semelhantes, como, por exemplo, o tratamento de problemas do sistema respiratório. Deste modo, é possível notar a importância de estudos com espécies de uso medicinal da Família Cactaceae, estudos estes que demonstram o poder terapêutico das plantas e valorizam o conhecimento popular das comunidades rurais do semiárido do nordeste do Brasil.

Ao longo dos anos tem se intensificado a busca por novos recursos pedagógicos e metodológicos que possam ser aplicados para o processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Atividades práticas em trilhas interpretativas podem ser uma forma de auxiliar nas atividades didáticas desenvolvidas pelos profissionais da educação. Neste contexto, o estudo buscou compreender a importância da trilha interpretativa como possível recurso didático voltado para todas as disciplinas que compõe a educação básica. O público participante da pesquisa foram oito professores lotados em três instituições públicas do Município de Areia, Paraíba (Nordeste do Brasil) e uma discente do curso de geografia. O estudo aconteceu em duas etapas, primeiramente em sala de aula para contextualização da temática e o segundo momento na trilha interpretativa localizada no Parque Estadual Mata do Pau Ferro. Foram realizadas análises do tipo descritiva e participante, a partir de uma abordagem qualitativa uma vez que as informações coletadas e tabuladas se deram através de questionários estruturados, observações e conversas. Notou-se que os docentes ainda não se apropriaram do espaço sugerido para incorporação do recurso, porém mostraram-se interessados em aderi-lo tanto para fins de educação ambiental quanto para colocar em prática os conteúdos explanados em suas aulas, por mais que não atuem em áreas das ciências ambientais. Para isso é necessário vinculo de maior intensidade entre as instituições de ensino superior - ensino básico - comunidade, a última por atuar como agente promissora de conhecimento local, pois as pessoas presentes nas áreas do entorno da unidade de conservação onde está presente a sugerida trilha participam efetivamente de sua gestão.

O estudo teve como objetivo intervir na construcao de uma acao de formacao continuada de professores para utilizacao de trilhas interpretativas como processo pedagogico, e analisar reflexivamente sobre os diferentes aspectos dessa intervencao. A formacao foi realizada com professores e professoras da rede estadual de ensino da cidade de Areia, estado da Paraiba. Caracterizando-se como uma pesquisa de abordagem qualitativa e como pesquisa participante. As atividades desenvolvidas com os professores (as) foram parte do projeto PROLICEN (Programa de Licenciaturas) e, foram realizadas em dois momentos distintos. Para coleta dos dados foi utilizado questionario, observacao e grupo focal. O primeiro momento teve a presenca de nove professores (as) e ocorreu por meio da formacao teorica em sala de aula mediado por discussoes sobre temas Educacao ambiental, Formacao Docente, Unidade de Conservacao, Metodologias Ativas, Trilhas interpretativas, Mata do Pau Ferro e exposicao dos recursos pedagogicos. O segundo momento de formacao ocorreu na Mata do Pau Ferro com a presenca de quatro professores (as) que participaram das trilhas interpretativas demarcada com pontos estrategicos e com temas pre-estabelecidos pelos monitores, a fim de estabelecer discussoes sobre diversos temas. A partir dessa formacao continuada foi possivel elucidar que formacoes continuadas que envolvam os professores e os facam refletir sobre suas metodologias em sala de aula, visto que, atualmente o percurso das formacoes tem enfadado os docentes, mas e notorio que os mesmos compreendem a necessidade de espacos formativos, principalmente, com temas relevantes para sociedade moderna e que tratam de contextos transdisciplinares.

Local knowledge and uses of forage resources are highly dynamic, and can be mediated by multiple factors, such as seasonality, floristic diversity and the morphophysiological characteristics of plants. We investigate how seasonality and vegetation cover mediate the use of forage resources. The study was carried out with agro-pastoralists from two areas of Brazilian semiarid region. To select the areas, we used the normalized difference vegetation index. We selected one area with low vegetation cover (Area I) and another with high vegetation cover (Area II). Respondents were selected using the snowball technique. Using semi-structured interviews, we collect the information about forage use in the dry and rainy seasons, preferences of ruminants and specific characteristics of plant species. A total of 57 informants were interviewed in the two areas. We used the Chi-square test to assess differences in the richness of species cited between areas, seasons (dry/rainy), origins (exotic/native) and strate (herbaceous/woody). Our results revealed that agro-pastoralists living in the area with the highest vegetation cover (Area II) cited a greater number of species. We found that the use and selection of species is guided by a series of functional characters, related to palatability and nutritional value, which change between seasons. These results highlight the vast knowledge of ecological characteristics of species and diet of ruminants acquired by agro-pastoralists during field experience, with seasonality defining the use of species. Different from what we expected, the richness of exotic species mentioned did not differ between areas. This diversity of information contributes to a better understanding of the use of forage resources and indicates the importance of including local experiences as strategies to ensure proper use and provide insights for the conservation of local resources.

The Brazilian Caatinga is one of the most threatened tropical dry forests in the world, mainly due to habitat fragmentation from anthropic activities. However, mountainous regions in the Caatinga are refuges of biodiversity, with high plant species richness, which are used for various purposes by local human populations. The present study sought to identify the local ecological knowledge of rural communities on a mountain in the semiarid region of Brazil, which is a refuge of biodiversity. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with key informants selected using the snowball sampling technique. According to the informants, the mountain helps recall memories of previous landscapes, which are linked to the biodiversity that it contains and its importance as a source of resources and influence on local rainfall regimes. For local populations, the conservation of Caatinga biodiversity represents the preservation of fauna and flora, the permanence of ecosystem functions and the resilience of intrinsic values related to maintaining their activities. A caatinga brasileira é uma das florestas tropicais secas mais ameaçadas do mundo, principalmente devido á fragmentação de habitats em função das pressões antrópicas. No entanto, as regiões montanhosas da Caatinga são consideradas refúgios de biodiversidade, com elevada riqueza de espécies vegetais, as quais são utilizadas para diversas finalidades por populações humanas locais. O presente estudo buscou identificar o conhecimento ecológico local das comunidades rurais no entorno de uma Serra na região semi-árida do Brasil, considerada um refúgio para a biodiversidade. O estudo foi realizado por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, com informantes-chave sendo selecionados pela técnica de amostragem de bola de neve. Segundo os informantes, a serra representa o resgate na memória de paisagens anteriores, ligadas à biodiversidade que ela contém e explicando a importância como fonte de recursos e influência nos regimes locais de chuvas. Para as populações locais, a conservação da biodiversidade da Caatinga representa mais do que apenas a preservação da fauna e flora, compreendendo também a permanência das funções dos ecossistemas para a manutenção de suas atividades.

Background: Cactaceae species are physiologically adapted to regions with arid and semi-arid climates, in which they are available and often used by traditional communities. This study aimed to analyze how ethnobotanical knowledge is influenced by socioeconomic factors such as age and gender in a semi-arid region of Paraiba, Brazil.Methods: This study was conducted in rural communities in the semi-arid region of Paraiba, northeastern Brazil. The data were collected by applying a semi-structured questionnaire to 44 informants (30 men and 14 women). The average age of the informants was 39 years; however, women were 39–77 and men were 31–80 years old. The chi-square test was used to analyze differences regarding knowledge, according to gender and age. The influence of gender (male and female) and age in the distribution of uses per category and species was assessed through the Poisson distribution model.Results: The following native species were recorded: Cereus jamacaru DC. subsp. jamacaru, Melocactus zehntneri, Pilosocereus gounellei (F.A.C. Weber) Byles & G.D. Rowley subsp. gounellei, Pilosocereus pachycladus F.Ritter, Tacinga inamoena (K. Schum.) N.P. Taylor & Stuppy, and Tacinga palmadora (Britton & Rose) N.P. Taylor & Stuppy, which had 436 citations in different categories of use (food, fuel, construction, fodder, medicinal, technology, and others). Our results indicated that residents cite more uses for fodder, food, and medicinal purposes. C. jamacaru had the highest UV and young men cited more uses for the species. Conclusions: Social variables tend to influence residents’ knowledge. Among the categories of use, the residents indicated a higher number of uses for fodder and C. jamacaru was the most prominent species.Keywords: Ethnobotany; Caatinga; Socioeconomic Factors; Use Value

Cactaceae species are important resources in the semi-arid region of Brazil and have been used and managed in a specific way by farmers to optimize and ensure the availability of cacti to rural communities. Thus, this study aimed to investigate management techniques used by residents of four rural communities in the municipality of Cabaceiras, Paraiba, Northeast Brazil. For this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 44 informants. Seventeen of them reported performing some type of management using the following cacti species: Pilosocereus gounellei (F.A.C. Weber) Byles & G.D. Rowley subsp. gounellei, Cereus jamacaru DC. subsp. Jamacaru, Pilosocereus pachycladus F. Ritter subsp. pernambucoensis (F. Ritter) Zappi, Tacinga palmadora (Britton & Rose) N.P. Taylor & Stuppy, and Melocactus zehntneri (Britton & Rose) Luetzelb. Ex situ and in situ management techniques were recorded. The first one performed by transplantation of propagules and the second one by tolerance. The species propagation is carried out using shoots and vegetative parts. Of the species identified, only Cereus jamacaru has more than one form of management. In addition to management, informants use rudimentary techniques such as burning the vegetative parts for fodder purposes.

Humans have used and coexisted with cacti in arid regions of North and South America for thousands of years. Species of the family Cactaceae possess physiological adaptations to arid and semi-arid climates that have allowed them to be used as a resource throughout the year by traditional peoples. The objective of this review is to present information on the uses and management of species of Cactaceae in the various regions of the Americas. This review provides information relevant to conservation policies regarding this important resource for local populations in semi-arid regions. To fully understand how management can influence cacti conservation, a knowledge gap regarding the traditional management of cacti needs to be addressed.

The present study tested the ecological apparency hypothesis in a Brazilian rural community. It used the use value to test the information gained through three types of calculations (UVchange, UVgeneral, UVpotential). A vegetation inventory was performed in two areas near Capivara, Paraiba, Brazil, and 112 informants were interviewed. For the hypothesis test, the Spearman correlation coefficient was used to correlate the phytosociological (vegetation) and ethnobotanical data (use value). The study recorded 25 useful species in the first site and 20 in the second site. Positive correlations were found in the first site, between the UVg to basal area and dominance, and between the UVc and basal area, dominance, and importance value. In the second site, between the UVg and both basal area and dominance and between UVc and basal area, density, and dominance. Apparency explained the local importance of useful plants in construction, technology, and fuel, but was not explanative of medicine. Also, important responses were observed for the different use values.
