Abstract

Climate change is one of the trending terms in the world nowadays due to its profound impact on human health and activity. Extreme drought events and desertification are some of the results of climate change. This study utilized the power of AI tools by using the long short-term memory (LSTM) model to predict the drought index for Anbar Province, Iraq. The data from the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) for 118 years have been used for the current study. The proposed model employed seven different optimizers to enhance the prediction performance. Based on different performance indicators, the results show that the RMSprop and Adamax optimizers achieved the highest accuracy (90.93% and 90.61%, respectively). Additionally, the models forecasted the next 40 years of the SPEI for the study area, where all the models showed an upward trend in the SPEI. In contrast, the best models expected no increase in the severity of drought. This research highlights the vital role of machine learning models and remote sensing in drought forecasting and the significance of these applications by providing accurate climate data for better water resources management, especially in arid regions like that of Anbar province. Abstract

A spillway is a significant structure that releases the exceeded water during extreme flood events. It is considered as a safety valve during dams operating. Spillway location at dam body is one of the most important requirements of dam design. Different locations may influence the flow patterns which lead to change in the hydraulic performance of the spillway. In this paper, a numerical model was presented utilizing the Ansys fluent software using the realizable k-ɛ turbulence model to investigate the flow patterns of Mandali Dam's spillway at different locations. The interaction between air and water phases was simulated by using volume of fluid (VOF) model. Moreover, cavitation damage was studied for different flow discharges values. the validation of the numerical model was executed in compression with the measurement of the physical model. A discharge of 1800 m3/s was utilized for validation, while five different discharges; 1800, 1300, 1040, 440, and 67 m3/s were employed to investigate the hydraulic properties. The results show an agreement between numerical model and the physical model. According to the hydraulic properties, the spillway location at the center of the dam is better than its location at the edge of the dam. The discharge coefficient value in scenario one was found to be closer to the physical model value compared to the second scenario. At discharge 1800 and 1300, the discharge coefficient was 2.02 and 1.72, while in scenario two it was 1.46 and 1.21 in comparison with physical model which was 2.06 and 1.99. For cavitation investigations, the numerical model shows that the spillway is safe with no cavitation effects for the whole applied discharge values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Groundwater is a better long-term water supply option when the weather is dry. An evaluation, development and suitable usage of it should be given more attention. In dry and semi-arid locations, groundwater is the primary source of water. Groundwater management becomes much more difficult in these places since there is a dearth of data. In order to determine how much groundwater may be used, groundwater recharge is critical to the process. Groundwater recharge rates have been studied extensively using a variety of approaches. This page offers an overview of the criteria that have been accepted and how they affect the outcomes. A review of previous research on methods for calculating the quantity of groundwater recharged, as well as an explanation of the features of each approach, is then presented. Prior research focused mostly on the geology and slope of the land, soil, land use/cover, lineaments, and drainage. The water table fluctuation (WTF) approach was determined to be the most widely employed method in the prior research evaluated. There is a high degree of accuracy in the data, although digging wells in the region is required to determine the depth of the ground water. In addition, it is considered the soil water balance method, a common method, and it gives accurate results and does not require drilling wells in the study area. It is the goal of this study to advise on the most appropriate methods for future groundwater recharge research. Abstract

Water resources are of great importance in the world's agriculture, especially regarding the scarcity of these resources. That calls for attention appropriate for analysis, study, and research in all issues and aspects that would contribute to the development and maintenance of those resources and achieve the maximum possible levels of quality and efficiency of use. The study was conducted during the fall season of 2020 to study groundwater quality (well water) in the city of Al-Qaim of Anbar Province to explain its suitability for agricultural exploitation in the region. The study included seven sites in Al-Qaim (Rtemi, Medicis, Eastern Akash, Okesha, Sawab, Albu-Hayat, and Al-Karah) to assess the validity of irrigation. The pH, Electrical conductivity (EC), positive ions (K+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+), and negative ions (HCO3, Cl-2, SO4) and CO3 were measured. The results showed that the studied well water is acceptable for irrigation purposes in terms of pH value, as for the electrical connection, it was six wells within the class (C2), which is adequate for irrigation for medium-salty crops, except for one well, which is a fine well within class C3 suitable for irrigation of high salinity crops. The total hardness values were low and did not pose any risk; as for the positive and negative ions, they were within the permissible limits within the specified classifications. Abstract

Hydrological soil group is essential to soil information for several fields of modeling and applications. This information can affect suitable environmental, agricultural, and hydrological development. Laboratory analysis for soil sampling cannot efficiently provide the needed information because these analyses are commonly costly, time-consuming, and limited in retrieving the temporal and spatial variability. In this context, remote sensing is now solid to offer meaningful spatial data for studying soil characteristics on various spatial scales utilizing the different spectral reflectance. For this study, the integration of Geographic Information System (GIS) remote sensing data and survey data with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) were used to generate a hydrological soil group map and to infer spatial patterns of soils across complete area converges for Alghadaf Wadi in the Western Desert of Iraq. The generated soil information was tested based on the sand, silt, and clay content. The testing result indicated that the differences between actual and predicted values to determine soil classes are agreed well. Abstract

Water is an essential source of sustaining life and used in generating electricity, agriculture, industry, and the daily domestic uses. This study was prepared to determine the water consumption of Anbar Province in the west of Iraq according to agricultural, industrial, and domestic demand. In addition, the study is evaluating the expected future water consumption by demand sites within study area. The results showed the domestic water demand will increases by 32% from 267.30 million m3 /year in 2021 to 352.70 million m3 per year in 2035, with a deficit of 24.5% in the year 2035. Furthermore, the study had appeared the agricultural demand was 1404.38 million m3 /year according to the limited cultivated area, which equals 42.93% from the total available area of 221,250 hectares. The agricultural demand increases to 2611 million m3 /year when uses all available area, and this cause occurs deficit in water demand reach to 1591 and 1715 million m3 /year in the years 2030 and 2035 respectively. In contrast, the study referred to necessary apply other irrigation methods as drip and sprinkler irrigation, which has high irrigation efficiency. 30. The Evaluation of the SWAT Model Performance to Predict the Runoff Values in the Iraqi Western Desert

Abstract

In the present research, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used for the prediction of surface runoff amounts of the catchment of Al-Masad, in the Western Desert of Iraq. The prediction period was from September 2020 to January 2030. The calibration and verification of this model were performed according to the daily surface runoff data that were measured between 2010 and 2014. Statistical parameters were employed to determine the performance of the model. These parameters were RSR (ratio of the root mean square error to the standard deviation of measured data), NSE (Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency), and PBias (percent Bias), which were calculated as 0.58%, 0.71%, and 13% for calibration and 0.55%, 0.74% and 11% for verification, respectively. The results from the model verification and calibration prove that this model was sufficient in simulating the catchment surface runoff. Furthermore, the SWAT model was applied for the prediction of daily, monthly, and yearly surface runoff value of the catchment from 2021 to 2030. The results obtained from the model showed that the annual surface runoff volume of the catchment, throughout the period of the simulation, was between 0.65 and 8.3 million m3 with an average value of 2.622 million m3. Abstract

Currently, desertification is a major problem in the western desert of Iraq. The harsh nature, remoteness, and size of the desert make it difficult and expensive to monitor and mitigate desertification. Therefore, this study proposed a comprehensive and cost-effective method, via the integration of geographic information systems (GISs) and remote sensing (RS) techniques to estimate the potential risk of desertification, to identify the most vulnerable areas and determine the most appropriate sites for rainwater conservation. Two indices, namely, the Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Degradation Index (LDI), were used for a cadastral assessment of land degradation. The findings of the combined rainwater harvesting appropriateness map, and the maps of NDVI and LDI changes found that 65% of highly suitable land for rainwater harvesting lies in the large change and 35% lies in the small change of NDVI, and 85% of highly suitable land lies in areas with a moderate change and 12% lies in strong change of LDI. The adoption of the weighted linear combination (WLC) and Boolean methods within the GIS environment, and the analysis of NDVI with LDI changes can allow hydrologists, decision-makers, and planners to quickly determine and minimize the risk of desertification and to prioritize the determination of suitable sites for rainwater harvesting., Validerad;2021;Nivå 2;2021-07-27 (beamah)
