Abstract

A thin layer was formed on the surface of the AISI 316L substrate by the process of nitrogen ion implantation at a vacuum pressure of 10-6 torr, a current of 50 mA for 90 minutes with the implantation energy of 20, 40 and 60 keV. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of nitrogen ion implantation on corrosion fatigue resistance in Simulated Body Fluid solution as a corrosion medium. The results show that the nitrogen ion implantation could increase corrosion resistance by reducing the corrosion rate and increasing the number of fatigue cycles.

Abstract

Low energy ion recoil spectroscopy is a powerful technique for the determination of adsorbate position on metal surfaces. In this study, this technique is employed to compare the adsorption sites of hydrogen and deuterium on Pd(100) by detection of either H or D recoil ions produced by Ne+ bombardment. Comparisons of experimental and Kalypso simulated azimuthal yield distributions show that, at room temperature, both hydrogen isotopes are adsorbed in the fourfold hollow site of Pd(100), however, at different heights above the surface (H—0.20 Å and D—0.25 Å). The adsorbates remain in the hollow site at all temperatures up to 383 K even though they move up to 0.40–0.45 Å above the surface. Density functional theory calculations show a similar coverage dependent adsorption height for both H and D and confirm a real difference between the H and D adsorption heights based on zero point energies. 30. Understanding the behavior of laser-produced tin plasma by time-resolved spectroscopy and simulations of their spectra

Abstract

Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectra from laser-produced tin plasmas have been recorded as a function of time using an ISAN grazing incidence spectrograph to study the temporal evolution of the tin unresolved transition array (UTA) responsible for the peak EUV emission. This paper reports the experimental as well as simulated results for a 10 ns gate width with 2 ns time steps which confirm that the development and collapse of the UTA follow the temporal behavior of the laser pulse. The self-absorption features at longer wavelengths are observed particularly during plasma cooling and arise from lower ion stages ranging from Sn VI to Sn XI.
