Search

The study of magnetic frustration in classical spin systems was motivated by the prediction and discovery of classical spin liquid states. These uncommon magnetic phases are characterized by a massive degeneracy of their ground state implying a finite magnetic entropy at zero temperature. While the classical spin liquid state was originally predicted in the Ising triangular lattice antiferromagnet in 1950, this state has never been experimentally observed in any triangular magnets. We report here the discovery of an electric analogue of classical spin liquids on a triangular lattice of uniaxial electric dipoles in EuAl12O19 . This new type of frustrated antipolar phase is characterized by a highly degenerate state at low temperature implying an absence of long-range antiferroelectric order, despite short-range antipolar correlations. Its dynamics are governed by a thermally activated process, slowing down upon cooling towards a complete freezing at zero temperature.

Microwave (MW) transmission, absorption, and reflection loss spectra of the ferrimagnetic U-type hexaferrite Sr$_4$CoZnFe$_{36}$O$_{60}$ ceramics were studied from 100 MHz to 35 GHz at temperatures between 10 and 390 K. 9 MW magnetic excitations with anomalous behavior near the ferrimagnetic phase transitions were revealed. They also change under the application of weak bias magnetic field (0 - 700 Oe) at room temperature. 6 pure magnetic modes are assigned to dynamics of the magnetic domain walls and inhomogeneous magnetic structure of the ceramics, to the natural ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and to the higher-frequency magnons. Three modes are considered as the magnetodielectric ones with dominating influence of the magnetic properties on their temperature and field dependences. Presence of the natural FMR in all ferrimagnetic phases proves existence of the non-zero internal magnetization and magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Splitting of the FMR into the two components without magnetic bias was observed in the collinear phase and is attributed to a change of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy during the phase transition. The high-frequency FMR component critically slows down to the phase transition. At room temperature, the FMR splitting and essential suppression of the higher-frequency modes was revealed under the weak bias field (300 - 700 Oe). The highly nonlinear MW response and the FMR splitting are caused by the gradual evolution of the polydomain magnetic structure to a monodomain one. The high number of magnetic excitations observed in the MW region confirms the suitability of using hexaferrite Sr$_4$CoZnFe$_{36}$O$_{60}$ ceramics as MW absorbers, shielding materials and highly tunable filters., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures in the main text; 10 pages, 7 figures in the supplementary material

We report on the microwave, terahertz (THz), infrared and Raman spectroscopic studies of $BiMn_{7}O_{12}$ ceramics, shedding more light into the nature of two structural phase transitions and their possible relation with ferroelectricity in this compound. We observed a softening of one polar phonon in the THz range on cooling towards 460 and 300 K, i.e., temperatures at which $BiMn_{7}O_{12}$ undergoes subsequent structural phase transitions from monoclinic $\textit{I2/m}$ to polar monoclinic $\textit{Im}$ and triclinic $\textit{P1}$ phases. The soft phonon causes dielectric anomalies typical for displacive ferroelectric phase transitions. Microwave measurements performed at 5.8 GHz up to 400 K qualitatively confirmed not only the dielectric anomaly at 300 K, but also revealed two other weak dielectric anomalies near the magnetic phase transitions at 60 K and 28 K. This evidences the multiferroic nature of the low-temperature phases, although the relatively high conductivity in the kHz and Hz spectral range prevented us from directly measuring the permittivity and ferroelectric polarization. Some Raman modes sense the magnetic phase transitions occurring near 60 and 25 K, showing that spin-phonon coupling is relevant in this compound and in this temperature range. The deviation of the Mn-O stretching mode frequency from the anharmonic temperature behavior was successfully explained by the spin correlation function calculated from the magnetic contribution to the specific heat.

The correlation between static magnetoelectric coupling and magnetic structure was investigated in $TbMn_{0.98}Fe_{0.02}O_{3}$ with magnetic field up to 8 T and down to 2 K. Single-crystal neutron diffraction experiments reveal a substantial increase in the temperature dependence of the incommensurate modulation wave vector of the antiferromagnetic phase as the magnetic field strength increases. Magnetic field-dependent pyroelectric current measurements revealed significantly higher magnetoelectric coupling at magnetic fields below 4 T than in pure TbMnO3. This is due to the higher sensitivity of the incommensurably modulated cycloid structure to weak magnetic fields. Detailed analysis of our data confirmed that the ferroelectric polarization is induced by inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction for magnetic field strength up to 4 T, but at higher fields a departure from theoretical predictions is ascertained, giving evidence for an additional, as yet misunderstood, contribution to magnetoelectric coupling. It shows that a small 2% substitution of Mn3+ by Fe3+ has a strong impact on the magnetic structure, promoting the destabilization of the incommensurably modulated magnetic cycloidal structure of $TbMnO_{3}$ in a magnetic field above 5 T. We demonstrate that the magnetoelectric coupling magnitude can be tuned through suitable substitutional elements, even at low level, inducing local lattice distortions with different electronic and magnetic properties.

We report a comprehensive study of the low-level substitution of Mn$^{3+}$ by Fe$^{3+}$ effect on the static and dynamic magnetoelectric coupling in TbMn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$O$_3$ ($x=0$, 0.02 and 0.04). The cationic substitution has a large impact on the balance between competitive magnetic interactions and, as a result, on the stabilization of the magnetic structures and ferroelectric phase at low temperatures. Low-lying electromagnon excitation is activated in the cycloidal modulated antiferromagnetic and ferroelectric phase in TbMnO$_3$, while it is observed up to TN in the Fe-substituted compounds, pointing for different mechanisms for static and dynamic magnetoelectric coupling. A second electrically active excitation near 40 cm$^{-1}$ is explained by means of Tb3+ crystal-field effects. This excitation is observed up to room temperature, and exhibits a remarkable 15 cm$^{-1}$ downshift on cooling in Fe-substituted compounds. Both electromagnon and crystal-field excitations are found to be coupled to the polar phonons with frequencies up to 250 cm$^{-1}$. Raman spectroscopy reveals a spin-phonon coupling below TN in pure TbMnO$_3$, but the temperature where the coupling start to be relevant increases with Fe concentration and reaches 100 K in TbMn$_{0.96}$Fe$_{0.04}$O$_3$. The anomalies in the T-dependence of magnetic susceptibility above TN are well accounted by spin-phonon coupling and crystal-field excitation, coupled to oxygen motions.

From the new infrared (IR) reflectivity and time-domain terahertz (THz) spectra combined with available high-frequency dielectric data above the MHz range in a broad temperature range of 10-900 K, a full picture of the soft and central mode behavior in the classical relaxor ferroelectric Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 (PMN) is suggested. A detailed comparison is given with the recent hyper-Raman spectroscopy data (Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 155501 (2016)), and also with other available experiments based on inelastic light and neutron scattering. The closest agreement is with the hyper-Raman data, both techniques yield the same number of soft-mode components and the same high-temperature softening towards the temperature T* ~ 400 K. In addition to evaluation of the IR-THz data using fitting with standard factorized form of the dielectric function, we performed a successful fitting of the same data using the effective medium approach (EMA), originally based on the assumption that the mesoscopic structure of PMN consists of randomly oriented uniaxially anisotropic polar nanodomains (PNDs) with somewhat harder TO polar modes in the direction along the local PND dipole (Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 027601 (2006)). Evaluation using the Bruggeman EMA modelling has been successfully applied in the entire investigated temperature range. These results suggest that the response perpendicular to the local dipole moment, at high temperatures induced by random fields rather than PNDs, undergoes a classical softening from high temperatures with permittivity obeying the Curie-Weiss law, eps_per = C/(T-Tc), C = 1.7 x 10^5 K and Tc = 380 K. Below the Burns temperature ~620 K, a GHz relaxation ascribed to flipping of the PNDs emerges from the soft mode response, slows down and broadens, remaining quite strong towards the cryogenic temperatures, where it can be assigned to fluctuations of the PND boundaries.

Magnetic resonance spectra of EuTiO3 in both bulk and thin film form were taken at temperatures from 3-350 K and microwave frequencies from 9.2-9.8 and 34 GHz. In the paramagnetic phase, magnetic resonance spectra are determined by magnetic dipole and exchange interactions between Eu2+ spins. In the film, a large contribution arises from the demagnetization field. From detailed analysis of the linewidth and its temperature dependence, the parameters of spin-spin interactions were determined: the exchange frequency is 15-15.5 GHz and the estimated critical exponent of the spin correlation length is ~ 0.5. In the bulk samples, the spectra exhibited a distinct minimum in the linewidth at the N\'eel temperature, T_N = 5.5 K, while the resonance field practically does not change even on cooling below T_N. This is indicative of a small magnetic anisotropy ~ 320 G in the antiferromagnetic phase. In the film, the magnetic resonance spectrum is split below T_N into several components due to excitation of the magnetostatic modes, corresponding to a non-uniform precession of magnetization. Moreover, the film was observed to degrade over two years. This was manifested by an increase of defects and a change in the domain structure. The saturated magnetization in the film, estimated from the magnetic resonance spectrum, was about 900 emu/cm3 or 5.5 mu_B/unit cell at T = 3.5 K.

Dielectric properties of BTZ-BCT ceramics were probed in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 100 THz in a broad temperature range (10-900 K). Polar soft phonon observed in infrared spectra softens with cooling, however below 500 K its frequency becomes temperature independent. Simultaneously, a central mode activates in terahertz and microwave spectra; and it actually drives the ferroelectric phase transitions. Consequently, the phase transition strongly resemble a crossover between the dispacive and order-disorder type. The central mode vanishes below 200 K. The dielectric relaxation in the radiofrequency and microwave range anomalously broadens on cooling below T$_{C1}$ resulting in the nearly frequency independent dielectric loss bleow 200 K. This broadening comes from a broad frequency distribution of ferroelectric domain wall vibrations. Raman spectra reveal new phonons below 400 K, i.e. already 15 K above T$_{C1}$. Several weak modes are detected in the paraelectric phase up to 500 K in the Raman spectra. We present a comprehensive study of polar and magnetic excitations in BiFeO3 ceramics and a thin film epitaxially grown on an orthorhombic (110) TbScO3 substrate. Infrared reflectivity spectroscopy was performed at temperatures from 5 to 900 K for the ceramics and below room temperature for the thin film. All 13 polar phonons allowed by the factor-group analysis were observed in theceramic samples. The thin-film spectra revealed 12 phonon modes only and an additional weak excitation, probably of spin origin. On heating towards the ferroelectric phase transition near 1100 K, some phonons soften, leading to an increase in the static permittivity. In the ceramics, terahertz transmission spectra show five low-energy magnetic excitations including two which were not previously known to be infrared active; at 5 K, their frequencies are 53 and 56 cm-1. Heating induces softening of all magnetic modes. At a temperature of 5 K, applying an external magnetic field of up to 7 T irreversibly alters the intensities of some of these modes. The frequencies of the observed spin excitations provide support for the recently developed complex model of magnetic interactions in BiFeO3 (R.S. Fishman, Phys. Rev. B 87, 224419 (2013)). The simultaneous infrared and Raman activity of the spin excitations is consistent with their assignment to electromagnons.

Infrared reflectivity spectra of cubic SrMnO$_{3}$ ceramics reveal 18 % stiffening of the lowest-frequency phonon below the antiferromagnetic phase transition occurring at T$_{N}$ = 233 K. Such a large temperature change of the polar phonon frequency is extraordinary and we attribute it to an exceptionally strong spin-phonon coupling in this material. This is consistent with our prediction from first principles calculations. Moreover, polar phonons become Raman active below T$_{N}$, although their activation is forbidden by symmetry in $Pm\bar{3}m$ space group. This gives evidence that the cubic $Pm\bar{3}m$ symmetry is locally broken below T$_{N}$ due to a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Multiphonon and multimagnon scattering is also observed in Raman spectra. Microwave and THz permittivity is strongly influenced by hopping electronic conductivity, which is caused by small non-stoichiometry of the sample. Thermoelectric measurements show room-temperature concentration of free carriers $n_{e}=$3.6 10$^{20}$ cm$^{-3}$ and the sample composition Sr$^{2+}$Mn$_{0.98}^{4+}$Mn$_{0.02}^{3+}$O$_{2.99}^{2-}$. The conductivity exhibits very unusual temperature behavior: THz conductivity increases on cooling, while the static conductivity markedly decreases on cooling. We attribute this to different conductivity of the ceramic grains and grain boundaries., Comment: subm. to PRB

The phase purity and the lattice dynamics in bulk EuTiO3 were investigated both microscopically, using X-ray and neutron diffraction, 151-Eu-M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, and 151-Eu nuclear inelastic scattering, and macroscopically using calorimetry, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, and magnetometry. Furthermore, our investigations were corroborated by ab initio theoretical studies. The perovskite symmetry, Pm-3m, is unstable at the M- and R- points of the Brillouin zone. The lattice instabilities are lifted when the structure relaxes in one of the symmetries: I4/mcm, Imma, R-3c with relative relaxation energy around -25 meV. Intimate phase analysis confirmed phase purity of our ceramics. A prominent peak in the Eu specific density of phonon states at 11.5 meV can be modelled in all candidate symmetries. A stiffening on heating around room temperature is indicative of a phase transition similar to the one observed in SrTiO3, however, although previous studies reported the structural phase transition to tetragonal I4/mcm phase our detailed sample purity analysis and thorough structural studies using complementary techniques did not confirm a direct phase transition. Instead, in the same temperature range, Eu delocalization is observed which might explain the lattice dynamical instabilities.

We performed factor-group analysis of all phonons in possible monoclinic C2/c and C2 structures of BiMnO3 and compared it with our experimental infrared and Raman spectra. We conclude that the crystal structure is centrosymmetric C2/c in the whole investigated temperature range from 10 to 550 K, therefore BiMnO3 cannot be ferroelectric. We revealed a dielectric relaxation in THz spectra above the structural phase transition taking place at T_C1=475 K giving evidence in strong lattice anharmonicity and a large dynamical disorder of Bi cations above T_C1. Step-like dielectric anomaly observed at T_C1 in THz permittivity reminds antiferroelectric phase transition. Nevertheless, the low-temperature dielectric studies did not reveal any antiferroelectric or ferroelectric hysteresis loop. Our experimental results support theoretical paper of P. Baettig et al. (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 129, 9854 (2007)) claiming that BiMnO3 is not multiferroic, but only antipolar ferromagnet., Comment: accepted to JAP

We report measurements of the optical response of polycrystalline DyN thin films. The frequency-dependent complex refractive index in the near IR-visible-near UV was determined by fitting reflection/transmission spectra. In conjunction with resistivity measurements these identify DyN as a semiconductor with 1.2 eV optical gap. When doped by nitrogen vacancies it shows free carrier absorption and a blue-shifted gap associated with the Moss-Burstein effect. The refractive index of 2.0+/-0.1 depends only weakly on energy. Far infrared reflectivity data show a polar phonon of frequency 280 cm-1 and dielectric strength delta epsilon= 20.

X-ray diffraction, dynamical mechanical analysis and infrared reflectivity studies revealed an antiferrodistortive phase transition in EuTiO3 ceramics. Near 300K the perovskite structure changes from cubic Pm-3m to tetragonal I4/mcm due to antiphase tilting of oxygen octahedra along the c axis (a0a0c- in Glazer notation). The phase transition is analogous to SrTiO3. However, some ceramics as well as single crystals of EuTiO3 show different infrared reflectivity spectra bringing evidence of a different crystal structure. In such samples electron diffraction revealed an incommensurate tetragonal structure with modulation wavevector q ~ 0.38 a*. Extra phonons in samples with modulated structure are activated in the IR spectra due to folding of the Brillouin zone. We propose that defects like Eu3+ and oxygen vacancies strongly influence the temperature of the phase transition to antiferrodistortive phase as well as the tendency to incommensurate modulation in EuTiO3., Comment: PRB, in press

Compressively strained epitaxial (001) EuTiO3 thin films of tetragonal symmetry have been deposited on (001) (LaAlO3)_0.29-(SrAl_{1/2}Ta_{1/2}O3)_0.71 (LSAT) substrates by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. Enhancement of the Neel temperature by 1 K with 0.9% compressive strain was revealed. The polar phonons ofthe films have been investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field by means of infrared reflectance spectroscopy. All three infrared active phonons show strongly stiffened frequencies compared to bulk EuTiO3 in accordance with first principles calculations. The phonon frequencies exhibit gradual softening on cooling leading to an increase in static permittivity. A new polar phonon with frequency near the TO1 soft mode was detected below 150 K. The new mode coupled with the TO1 mode was assigned as the optical phonon from the Brillouin zone edge, which is activated in infrared spectra due to an antiferrodistortive phase transition and due to simultaneous presence of polar and/or magnetic nanoclusters. In the antiferromagnetic phase we have observed a remarkable softening of the lowest-frequency polar phonon under an applied magnetic field, which qualitatively agrees with first principles calculations. This demonstrates the strong spin-phonon coupling in EuTiO3, which is responsible for the pronounced dependence of its static permittivity on magnetic field in the antiferromagnetic phase., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Terahertz and far-infrared electric and magnetic responses of hexagonal piezomagnetic YMnO3 single crystals are investigated. Antiferromagnetic resonance is observed in the spectra of magnetic permeability mu_a [H(omega) oriented within the hexagonal plane] below the Neel temperature T_N. This excitation softens from 41 to 32 cm-1 on heating and finally disappears above T_N. An additional weak and heavily-damped excitation is seen in the spectra of complex dielectric permittivity epsilon_c within the same frequency range. This excitation contributes to the dielectric spectra in both antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases. Its oscillator strength significantly increases on heating towards room temperature thus providing evidence of piezomagnetic or higher-order couplings to polar phonons. Other heavily-damped dielectric excitations are detected near 100 cm-1 in the paramagnetic phase in both epsilon_c and epsilon_a spectra and they exhibit similar temperature behavior. These excitations appearing in the frequency range of magnon branches well below polar phonons could remind electromagnons; however, their temperature dependence is quite different. We have used density functional theory for calculating phonon dispersion branches in the whole Brillouin zone. A detailed analysis of these results and of previously published magnon dispersion branches brought us to the conclusion that the observed absorption bands stem from phonon-phonon and phonon- paramagnon differential absorption processes. The latter is enabled by a strong short-range in-plane spin correlations in the paramagnetic phase., Comment: subm. to PRB

High-frequency dielectric studies of Bi_0.85Nd_0.15FeO_3 ceramics performed betweeen 100 and 900 K reveal hardening of most polar phonons on cooling below antiferroelectric phase transition, which occurs near 600 K. Moreover, a strong THz dielectric relaxation is seen in paraelectric phase. Its relaxation frequency softens on cooling towards Tc ~ 600 K, its dielectric strength simultaneously decreases and finaly the relaxation disappears from the spectra below 450 K. Both phonon and dielectric relaxation behavior is responsible for a decrease in the dielectric permittivity at the antiferroelectric phase transition. Origin of unusual strong THz dielectric relaxation in paraelectric phase is discussed. Bi_0.85Nd_0.15FeO_3 structrure lies on the phase boundary between polar rhombohedral and non-polar orthorhombic phase and owing to this the polarization rotation and polarization extension can enhance the piezoelectric response of this system. Similarities and discrepancies with lead-based piezoelectric perovskites, exhibiting morphotrophic phase boundary between two ferroelectric phases, are discussed., Comment: JAP, in print

We report an investigation of hexagonal Y_(1-x)Eu_xMnO_3 ceramics with x=0, 0.1 and 0.2 using infrared and THz spectroscopies in the temperature range between 5 and 900 K. The temperature dependence of the THz permittivity reveals a kink near the antiferromagnetic phase transition temperature T_N ~ 70 K giving evidence of a strong spin-lattice coupling. Below T_N two absorption peaks were revealed in the THz spectra close to 43 and 73 cm-1. While the first peak corresponds to a sharp antiferromagnetic resonance exhibiting softening on heating towards TN, the second one may be attributed to an impurity mode or a multiphonon absorption peak. High-temperature THz spectra measured up to 900 K reveal only small gradual increase of the permittivity in agreement with a weak phonon softening observed in the infrared reflectance spectra upon heating. This corresponds to an improper ferroelectric character of the phase transition proposed from first principle calculations by Fennie and Rabe [Phys. Rev. We describe the first-principles design and subsequent synthesis of a new material with the specific functionalities required for a solid-state-based search for the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron. We show computationally that perovskite-structure europium barium titanate should exhibit the required large and pressure-dependent ferroelectric polarization, local magnetic moments, and absence of magnetic ordering even at liquid helium temperature. Subsequent synthesis and characterization of Eu$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$TiO$_3$ ceramics confirm the predicted desirable properties., Comment: Nature Materials, in press

Several SrTiO3 (STO) thin films without electrodes processed by pulsed laser deposition, of thicknesses down to 40 nm, were studied using infrared transmission and reflection spectroscopy. The complex dielectric responses of polar phonon modes, particularly ferroelectric soft mode, in the films were determined quantitatively. The compressed epitaxial STO films on (100) La0.18Sr0.82Al0.59-Ta0.41O3 substrates (strain 0.9%) show strongly stiffened phonon responses, whereas the soft mode in polycrystalline film on (0001) sapphire substrate shows a strong broadening due to grain boundaries and/or other inhomogeneities and defects. The stiffened soft mode is responsible for a much lower static permittivity in the plane of the compressed film than in the bulk samples., Comment: 11 pages

Dielectric response e*(f,T) and polar phonon spectra of coarse grain (grain size ~ 4 mkm) and fine grain (grain size ~ 150 nm) ceramics of PbMg_(1/3)Nb_(2/3)O3-35%PbTiO3 were investigated at temperatures 10 - 900 K. e*(f,T) in coarse-grain ceramics exhibits relaxor behavior at high temperatures and a sharp anomaly at the ferroelectric phase transition. The fine-grain ceramics exhibit mainly relaxor ferroelectric behavior with a smaller dielectric constant. The difference is explained by different relaxational dynamics of polar nanoclusters, which appear to be more stabilized at high temperatures in the fine-grain ceramics by pinning at grain boundaries. Below Tc, the growth of ferroelectric domains is suppressed in fine-grain ceramics as supported also by a second harmonic generation. On the other hand, polar phonon frequencies and their temperature dependences are almost independent of the grain size, but the selection rules for the cubic symmetry are not obeyed and all phonons are split due to a locally broken symmetry by polar nanoregions and chemical disorder. The lowest-frequency polar phonon undergoes partial softening down to ~ 0.1 THz near Tc = 440 K in both ceramics, but the dielectric anomaly is caused predominantly by flipping and breathing of polar nanoclusters. Due to contribution of both the soft phonon mode and dielectric relaxations into the dielectric constant, the ferroelectric phase transition, which corresponds to the percolation threshold of the polar nanoregions into macroscopic domains, can be considered as a special case of crossover between the displacive and order-disorder type., Comment: subm. to PRB

Infrared reflectance spectra of an epitaxial Bi2FeCrO6 thin film prepared by pulsed laser deposition on LaAlO3 substrate were recorded between 10 and 900 K. No evidence for a phase transition to the paraelectric phase was observed, but some phonon anomalies were revealed near 600 K. Most of the polar modes exhibit only a gradual softening, which results in a continuous increase of the static permittivity on heating. It indicates that the ferroelectric phase transition should occur somewhere above 900 K. Magnetic measurements performed up to 1000 K, revealed a possible magnetic phase transition between 600 and 800 K, but the exact critical temperature cannot be determined due to a strong diamagnetic signal from the substrate. Nevertheless, our experimental data show that the B-site ordered Bi2FeCrO6 is one of the rare high-temperature multiferroics., Comment: subm. to PRB

Relaxor ferroelectric PbMg_1/3Ta_2/3O_3 ceramics and thin films were investigated by means of broad-band dielectric, time-domain terahertz (THz) and Fourier-transform infrared (IR) spectroscopy in the frequency range 100 Hz - 90 THz at temperatures 100 - 490 K, the THz and IR spectra were studied from 20 to 900K. Diffused and strongly temperature dependent peak in the complex permittivity is caused by a dielectric relaxation due to the dynamics of polar clusters. The relaxation appears below Burns temperature T_d in the THz range, slows down on cooling through the microwave and MHz range and anomalously broadens. The shortest and longest relaxation times of the distribution of relaxation times follow Arrhenius and Vogel-Fulcher law, respectively. The degree of B-site order has only a small influence on the parameters of the dielectric relaxation and almost no influence on the phonon parameters. Below T_m ~ 180K, the distribution of relaxation frequencies becomes broader than our experimental spectral range and frequency independent dielectric losses develop below 100 GHz in the spectra. Although the macroscopic crystal structure is cubic, IR spectra give evidence about the lower local symmetry which can be assigned to the presence of polar clusters below T_d. Infrared spectra above T_d still reveal more modes than predicted by selection rules in the paraelectric phase of the Fm-3m space group so that we suggest selection rules which take into account chemical inhomogeneity in the beta''-perovskite sublattice., Comment: subm. to J. Infrared reflectivity and time-domain terahertz transmission spectra of EuTiO3 ceramics revealed a polar optic phonon at 6 - 300K, whose softening is fully responsible for the recently observed quantum paraelectric behaviour. Even if our EuTiO3 ceramics show lower permittivity than the single crystal due to a reduced density and/or small amount of secondary pyrochlore Eu2Ti2O7 phase, we confirmed the magnetic field dependence of the permittivity, also slightly smaller than in single crystal. Attempt to reveal the soft phonon dependence at 1.8K on the magnetic field up to 13T remained below the accuracy of our infrared reflectivity experiment.

Pb_1.83Mg_0.29Nb_1.71O_6.39 (PMN) crystallizing in a cubic pyrochlore structure exhibits, as the first dielectrics with pyrochlore structure, typical feature of quantum paraelectrics - its permittivity continuously increases on cooling and levels off below ~ 30K, without any signature of a structural phase transition. Broad-band dielectric spectra do not show any dielectric dispersion in the real part of permittivity up to 8.8 GHz. THz and infrared spectra reveal a soft polar optic mode which is responsible for the temperature dependence of the permittivity. The leveling-off of the permittivity at low temperatures obeys the Barrett formula and the fitted vibrational zero-point energy 1/(2*k_B*T_1) corresponds to the measured soft mode frequency. The number of observed infrared phonons exceeds that predicted from the factor-group analysis which indicates that the structure is at least locally non-cubic., Comment: subm. to PRB, revised version according to referees' reports

Ferroelectric soft mode properties in ceramics and thin films are reviewed and compared with single crystals. In general, the permittivity in ceramics and thin films is markedly reduced compared to the single crystals mainly because of low-permittivity grain boundaries - dead layers - (sometimes also nano-cracks) present in the samples. In SrTiO3 and BaTiO3, this dielectric reduction is fully explained by stiffening of the soft mode frequency. In most other ferroelectrics, the soft mode accounts only partly for such a permittivity reduction, since the transition is only partially driven by the phonon mode softening. In these cases, additional relaxational dispersion below the optical phonon range (central mode) accounts for the main part of the dielectric anomaly near Tc. BFO3 ceramics were investigated by means of infrared reflectivity and time domain THz transmission spectroscopy at temperatures 20 - 950 K, and the magnetodielectric effect was studied at 10 - 300 K, with the magnetic field up to 9 T. Below 175 K, the sum of polar phonon contributions into the permittivity corresponds to the value of measured permittivity below 1 MHz. At higher temperatures, a giant low-frequency permittivity was observed, obviously due to the enhanced conductivity and possible Maxwell-Wagner contribution. Above 200 K the observed magnetodielectric effect is caused essentially through the combination of magnetoresistance and the Maxwell-Wagner effect, as recently predicted by Catalan (Appl. Phys. Lett. 88, 102902 (2006)). Since the magnetodielectric effect does not occur due to a coupling of polarization and magnetization as expected in magnetoferroelectrics, we call it improper magnetodielectric effect. Below 175 K the magnetodielectric effect is by several orders of magnitude lower due to the decreased conductivity. Several phonons exhibit gradual softening with increasing temperature, which explains the previously observed high-frequency permittivity increase on heating. The paper suggests to treat the infrared reflectivity spectra of single crystal perovskite relaxors as fine-grained ferroelectric ceramics: locally frozen polarization makes the dielectric function strongly anisotropic in the phonon frequency range and the random orientation of the polarization at nano-scopic scale requires to take into account the inhomogeneous depolarization field. Employing a simple effective medium approximation (Bruggeman symmetrical formula) to dielectric function describing the polar optic modes as damped harmonic oscillators turns out to be sufficient for reproducing all principal features of room temperature reflectivity of PMN. One of the reflectivity bands is identified as a geometrical resonance entirely related to the nanoscale polarization inhomogeneity. The approach provides a general guide for systematic determination of the polar mode frequencies split by the inhomogeneous polarization at nanometer scale., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Temperature dependences of the optic phonons in $\rm PbSc_{1/2}Ta_{1/2}O_3$ sol-gel films deposited on sapphire substrates were studied by means of Fourier transform far-infrared transmission spectroscopy in the temperature range 20-900\K. Four films displaying different B-site order with both ferroelectric and relaxor behavior were studied. In all cases the TO mode near 80\icm{} at 10\K{} softens on heating to $\approx$45\icm{} following the Cochran law with extrapolated critical temperature near 700\K{} (400\K{} above the temperature of dielectric maximum, $T_{\rm m}$), but above 600\K{} its frequency remains stabilized. It can be assigned to the A$_{1}$ component of the ferroelectric soft mode inside polar clusters which form below the Burns temperature near 700\K. In the ordered PST film another mode activates below T$_{m}$ in infrared spectra near 60\icm exhibiting also anomalous temperature dependence due to its coupling with the former mode. It is assigned to the A$_{1}$ component of the F$_{2g}$ Raman active mode. Central mode, which appears below the Burns temperature in the THz range, is assigned to the dynamics of polar clusters. It slows down on cooling and vanishes from our spectral range below $T_{\rm m}$. The relaxor ferroelectric PbMg1/Nb2/3O3 was investigated by means of broad-band dielectric and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) transmission spectroscopy in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 15 THz at temperatures between 20 and 900 K using PMN films on infrared transparent sapphire substrates. While thin film relaxors display reduced dielectric permittivity at low frequencies, their high frequency intrinsic or lattice response is shown to be the same as single crystal/ceramic specemins. It was observed that in contrast to the results of inelastic neutron scattering, the optic soft mode was underdamped at all temperatures. On heating, the TO1 soft phonon followed the Cochran law with an extrapolated critical temperature equal to the Burns temperature of 670 K and softened down to 50 cm-1. Above 450 K the soft mode frequency leveled off and slightly increased above the Burns temperature. A central mode, describing the dynamics of polar nanoclusters appeared below the Burns temperature at frequencies near the optic soft mode and dramatically slowed down below 1 MHz on cooling below room temperature. It broadened on cooling, giving rise to frequency independent losses in microwave and lower frequency range below the freezing temperature of 200 K. In addition, a new heavily damped mode appeared in the FTIR spectra below the soft mode frequency at room temperature and below. Time-domain THz transmission experiment was performed on a $\rm SrBi_2Ta_2O_9$ film deposited on sapphire substrate. Temperatures between 300 and 923 K were investigated and complex permittivity spectra of the film were determined. The lowest frequency optic phonon near 28 cm$^{-1}$ reveals a slow monotonic decrease in frequency on heating with no significant anomaly near the phase transitions. We show that the dielectric anomaly near the ferroelectric phase transition can be explained by slowing down of a relaxational mode, observed in the THz spectra. A second harmonic generation signal observed in a single crystal confirms a loss of center of symmetry in the ferroelectric phase and a presence of polar clusters in the intermediate ferroelastic phase., Comment: subm. to J. New relaxor ferroelectric system has been synthesized. BLTN exhibits a smeared maximum of permittivity, characteristic of classic relaxor behaviour, with a peak shift from 185 K at 100 Hz to 300 K at 1 GHz. BNTN undergoes a first order ferroelectric phase transition at 389 K and BLNTN exhibits both a ferroelectric phase transition at 274 K and relaxor behaviour at higher temperatures., Comment: subm. to J. Lattice dynamics for five ordered PMN supercells were calculated from first principles by the frozen phonon method. Maximal symmetries of all supercells are reduced by structural instabilities. Lattice modes corresponding to these instabilities, equilibrium ionic positions, and infrared reflectivity spectra were computed for all supercells. The microwave, near-millimetre and infrared (IR) dielectric response of Srn+1TinO3n+1 (n=1-4) Ruddlesden-Popper homologous series was studied in the temperature range 10 to 300 K. Remarkable softening of the polar optical mode was observed in Sr4Ti3O10 and Sr5Ti4O13 which explains the increase in microwave permittivity and dielectric loss upon cooling. However, both samples have a distinct content of SrTiO3 dispersed between SrO layers. Inelastic neutron scattering study of the perovskite relaxor ferroelectric PZN:8%PT elucidates the origin of the previously reported unusual kink on the low frequency transverse phonon dispersion curve (known as "waterfall" effect). We show that its position depends on the choice of the Brillouin zone and that the relation of its position to the size of the polar nanoregions is highly improbable.
