Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth infestation is one of the major constraints to maize production in the Nigeria savannas. The application of nitrogen fertilizer to Striga-resistant hybrids may reduce Striga infection and increase grain yields. The objective of this study was to assess the performance of six maize hybrids at low (30 kg ha−1) and high (120 kg ha−1) nitrogen application under natural infestation with Striga in northern Nigeria in 2014 and 2015. The two nitrogen rates and the six hybrids were arranged in a split-plot design with three replications. The nitrogen treatment was assigned to the main plot while the maize hybrids were assigned to the subplot. Data were collected on number of emerged Striga plants, Striga damage score, total dry matter and grain yield. Results showed that the application of nitrogen at 120 kg ha−1 reduced the number of Striga plants by 58% compared to application at 30 kg N ha−1 in Kafin Madaki and by 48% in Tudun Wada. Nitrogen application at 120 kg N ha−1 also reduced Striga damage rating by 22% in Kafin Madaki and by 33% in Tudun Wada. Both the commercial hybrid (OBASUPER 1) and the susceptible hybrid (8338-1) exhibited higher Striga damage ratings compared to the new hybrids at both locations. Grain yield was 86 and 98% higher in Kafin Madaki and Tudun Wada, respectively, when N was applied at 120 kg N ha−1 than at 30 kg N ha−1. The hybrids M1124-3 and M1227-14 produced grain yields that were significantly higher than those of the other hybrids in all locations. Our results showed that the application of 120 kg N ha−1 to Striga-resistant maize hybrids will reduce Striga infection and increase grain yield.

Engaging ten key informants through purposive sampling, the study employed NVivo version 10 for a detailed thematic analysis using Query and Coding to systematically identify, classify, and organize key themes regarding knowledge, diagnostics, management roles, and community impact.Results: The findings indicate a well-informed healthcare workforce but highlight gaps in early detection, diagnostic accuracy, and procedural standardization. Concerns were raised about the potential overestimation of disease incidence due to improved diagnostics, suggesting a historical under-detection of Lassa fever. The analysis underscores the need for a multifaceted management approach, emphasizing international collaboration and culturally sensitive community engagement to effectively tackle the disease. A significant concern identified is the high mortality rate resulting from delayed referrals and communication challenges within the health system, leading to actionable recommendations for enhancing Lassa fever response strategies. The study’s thematic analysis provides a nuanced understanding of the challenges and areas for improvement, emphasizing the critical role of healthcare professionals in combating Lassa fever.Conclusion: Combating Lassa fever in Sierra Leone demands an integrative strategy that extends beyond medical interventions to encompass educational and infrastructural enhancements. The purpose of the study is to investigate the prevalence of self-medication, the reasons behind it, and its potential consequences during the pandemic.Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Moriba Town, Bo City, Southern Sierra Leone. Using a multistage systematic sampling technique, 246 adult participants were selected. Data were collected using Kobo collect electronic platform and analyzed using SPSS version 26.0.Results: Out of the 246 adult residents who were sampled, 63 (26%) practiced self-medication. Among them, females (33 or 52%) were more prevalent than males (30 or 48%). The most dominant age groups for self-medication were 38– 47 (22 or 35%) and 28– 37 (18 or 29%). The major reasons for self-medication were fear of infection (189 or 77%), fear of quarantine (199 or 81%), and stigma (189 or 77%). Delays in treatment (113 or 46%) and unavailability of Covid-19 medications (92 or 37%) were also cited. However, a majority of respondents (162 or 66%) denied the influence of friends or media (168 or 68%) on their decision to self-medicate. Reasons like “delay in receiving treatment” and “influence of friends” showed significant association with self-medication (pValue < 0.05). More than half of the respondents 177 (72%) did not practice self-medication before the pandemic. Adverse reactions due to self-medication included skin rashes and blisters 29 (45%) and drowsiness 24 (38%).Conclusion: The prevalence of unsupervised medication before and after the pandemic was minimal suggesting little impact of the pandemic. Fear and social stigma were the main drivers for self-medication. To promote safety and informed health decisions, regulatory measures, and awareness campaigns are essential to control unsupervised medication sales, improve drug labeling, and educate the public about the dangers of self-medication.Keywords: COVID-19, self-medication, Moriba town, cross-sectional study, fear of infection

Yam (Dioscorea spp) occupies an important place in the diet of the populations of Côte d’Ivoire. It is a real source of starch and therefore generates enormous commercial potential. However, the decrease in production due to pest attacks represents a real threat to this crop. This study was conducted with the aim of improving yam production in Côte d’Ivoire. To do so, isolations carried out on yam leaves showing symptoms of foliar diseases have allowed us to identify 9 fungal genera. These were Colletotrichum sp., Fusarium sp., Pestalotiopsis sp., Pestalotia sp., Botryodiplodia sp., Aspergillus sp., Mucor sp., Curvularia sp. and Phytophtora sp. Among these fungi, the genus Colletotrichum sp. was the most isolated with a rate of 56% followed by the Fusarium and Pestalotia genera (8%). Pathogenicity tests performed on healthy leaves of two yam varieties revealed that the Dioscorea alata is more susceptible to fungi compared to Dioscorea rotundata. The largest average diameter of necrosis was caused by Pestalotiopsis sp. (5.97 cm) on the Dioscorea alata variety while the smallest was caused by Colletotrichum sp.9 on Dioscorea rotundata (0.5 cm). Combatting these fungi need to be developed for effective management of leaf diseases of yam in Côte d’Ivoire.

We aimed to analyze Ebola survivors’ laboratory biomarkers as compared to their non-infected household relatives to identify biomarkers that could guide the identification of survivors at increased risk of developing severe at odds with the non-severe post-Ebola syndrome.Materials and Methods: Data were extracted from medical records of the Ebola survivors clinic, and we included only Ebola survivor’s parameters recorded during the first baseline follow-up visit 2 weeks interval after their second negative PCR result. Moreover, household non-infected family contacts of survivors visiting the clinic during the same period were recruited as community control.Results: The mean age of survivors was 32.65 (IQR: 15.5, 38.25) years, and Ebola IgG immunoglobulin was detected in all, thus confirming their status. The statistical significance (all p < 0.05) observed in monocyte percentage (MONO%), cluster of differentiation 4 percentage (CD4%), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatinine (CREA), and creatinine kinase (C-kinase) proved to be clinically significant as compared to the household relatives’ group. Interestingly, the linear regression analysis indicated that the duration at ETU was negatively associated with lymphocyte percentage with a 5% lymphocyte decrease per day spent at ETU. Finally, there was a significant (p < 0.05) association between hematological (Hb, PCV, MCV, MCH), biochemical (ALT, CREA, C-kinase, T-cholesterol, triglycerides) parameters and the risk of developing severe complications.Conclusion: We recommend clinicians closely monitor Hb, PCV, MCV, MCH, ALT, CREA, C-kinase, T-cholesterol, triglycerides and lymphocytes as clinically relevant laboratory biomarkers to identify survivors at higher risk of developing severe post-acute syndrome upon discharge from Ebola treatment unit including headache, abdominal pain, chest pain, ocular complication, arthralgia, hearing difficulty and erectile dysfunction which can impact health-related quality of life among Ebola survivors.Keywords: Ebola virus disease, hematological, immunological, biochemical, biomarkers, post-acute syndrome

The project Cultrural+ (an Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership project in the field of Adult Education) is funding research and education to deal with major demographic challenges in some regions of the participant countries (Extremadura in Spain, Tràsos-Montes in Portugal, Central Massif in France, Thessaly in Greece and province of Latina in Italy). The paper will discuss the particular problems that European depopulated areas are facing and how cultural heritage and cultural tourism could act as resilience factors. Research is showing that though the different countries’ regions face similar demographic challenges, strategies and planned actions are different. The levels and indicators to measure and understand depopulation processes are also diverse, as are the levels of actualization of the data in each country. International comparative interdisciplinary research allows transfer of best practices cases and models as the “learning territories” and to deepen in the analysis and prospection of the socio-cultural major changes that are affecting the European countryside. This paper analyses the criteria that can help evaluate and acknowledge best practices.

Introduction: Historically, prehospital care of trauma patients has included nearly universal use of a cervical collar (C-collar) and long spine board (LSB). Due to recent evidence demonstrating harm in using LSBs, implementation of new spinal motion restriction (SMR) protocols in the prehospital setting should reduce LSB use, even among patients with spinal cord injury. Our goal in this study was to evaluate the rates of and reasons for LSB use in high-risk patients—those with hospital-diagnosed spinal cord injury (SCI)—after statewide implementation of SMR protocols.Methods: Applying data from a state emergency medical services (EMS) registry to a state hospital discharge database, we identified cases in which a participating EMS agency provided care for a patient later diagnosed in the hospital with a SCI. Cases were then retrospectively reviewed to determine the prevalence of both LSB and C-collar use before and after agency adoption of a SMR protocol. We reviewed cases with LSB use after SMR protocol implementation to determine the motivations driving continued LSB use. We used simple descriptive statistics, odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) to describe the results.Results: We identified 52 EMS agencies in the state of Arizona with 417,979 encounters. There were 225 patients with SCI, of whom 74 were excluded. The LSBs were used in 52 pre-SMR (81%) and 49 post-SMR (56%) cases. The odds of LSB use after SMR protocol implementation was 70% lower than it had been before implementation (OR 0.297, 95% CI 0.139–0.643; P = 0.002). Use of a C-collar after SMR implementation was not significantly changed (OR 0.51, 95% CI 0.23–1.143; P = 0.10). In the 49 cases of LSB use after agency SMR implementation, the most common reasons for LSB placement were ease of lifting (63%), placement by non-transporting agency (18%), and extrication (16.3%). High suspicion of SCI was determined as the primary or secondary reason for not removing LSB after assessment in 63% of those with LSB placement, followed by multiple transfers required (20%), and critical illness (10%).Conclusion: Implementation of selective spinal motion restriction protocols was associated with a statistically significant decrease in the utilization of long spine boards among prehospital patients with acute traumatic spinal cord injury.

Abstract Developing high-yielding and resilient maize hybrids is essential to ensure its sustainable production with the ongoing challenges of considerable shifts in global climate. This study aimed to explore genetic diversity among exotic and local maize inbred lines, evaluate their combining ability, understand the genetic mechanisms influencing ear characteristics and grain yield, and identify superior hybrids suited for timely and late sowing conditions. Seven local and exotic maize inbred lines were genotyped using SSR (Simple Sequence Repeat) markers to assess their genetic diversity. These diverse lines were utilized to develop 21 F1 hybrids using a diallel mating design. These hybrids, alongside a high-yielding commercial check (SC-10), were evaluated under field conditions across two growing seasons under timely and late sowing conditions. The results showed that sowing date, assessed hybrids, and their interaction significantly influenced all measured agronomic traits. Notably, late sowing reduced plant height, ear characteristics, and, ultimately, grain yield. Several hybrids, particularly L101 × L103, L101 × L105, L104 × L105, and L104 × L107 under timely sowing, and L101 × L105 and L104 × L107 under late sowing, surpassed the agronomic performance of check commercial hybrid. Inbred lines L101 and L103 emerged as superior combiners for ear traits and yield, while line L106 showed promise for breeding shorter-stature plants. Hybrid combinations L101 × L105, L104 × L107, and L106 × L107 were identified as specific good combiners for grain yield and related traits under both sowing conditions, indicating their potential for commercial development. Strong positive associations were observed between grain yield and certain agronomic traits highlighting their utility for indirect selection in early breeding generations.

BACKGROUND: The 2020 World Health Organization Guidelines on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior are the first to provide evidence-based recommendations for reducing both dimensions of languorous behavior. The relationship between sitting time and exercise remains understudied among diverse adolescent populations worldwide. METHODS: The 2017 Sierra Leone Global School-based Student Health Survey was a nationally representative cross-sectional study of secondary school students. RESULTS: Of the 2798 participants, 82% did not engage in moderate or vigorous physical activity for at least an hour every day, 25% sat for 3 or more hours each day outside of school and homework, and 87% were physically inactive and/or sedentary based on those thresholds. Girls who never or rarely exercised tended to maintain light physical activity outside of school rather than sitting, while boys who exercised daily tended to be sedentary when they were not playing sports. IMPLICATIONS FOR SCHOOL HEALTH POLICY, PRACTICE, AND EQUITY: Students spend their waking hours doing a mix of sitting, light physical activity, and moderate or vigorous physical activity. Schools can help reduce sedentarism and increase movement among students. CONCLUSIONS: Home, school, and community health interventions may be useful for increasing energy expenditure among adolescents in low- and middle-income countries.

Radishes, which are common root vegetables, are rich in vitamins and minerals, and contain low calories. This vegetable is known for its rapid growth. Nevertheless, the variety of leaf diseases where leaves get affected by various bacterial and fungal diseases can hinder the healthy growth of radish. Furthermore, there is a high risk of inaccurate identification of diseases if the farmers try to use traditional methods in recognizing these diseases. With the purpose of precise identification of radish leaf diseases for the finest growth of this vegetable, total of 2801 images of the radish leaves are collected from vegetable field in Bangladesh. The collected dataset includes comprehensive images of healthy leaves as well as four types of leaf affected by various diseases such as Black Leaf Spot, Downey Mildew, Flea Beetle and Mosaic. Utilizing this robust dataset, deep learning models can be trained to identify the leaf diseases which helps to detect the diseases in order to reduce the harm of the cultivation of radish. By identifying the diseases on radish leaves accurat-ely and maintaining healthy production of radish, this dataset contributes to the broader sustainability in the agricultural sector.

Background: Periprosthetic hip dislocation after total hip arthroplasty is a devastating postoperative complication. It is often associated with suboptimal orientation of the acetabular component, characterized by the acetabular abduction and anteversion angles obtained from anteroposterior pelvic radiographs. We introduce a novel automated web tool to streamline the subjective and lengthy process of this manual measurement and compare it to manual human measurements. Methods: One board-certified orthopaedic surgeon used the web tool to make automatic measurements of anteroposterior radiographs of 97 patients who underwent unilateral hip arthroplasty. Manual and web tool measurements included abduction angle and calculated anteversion angle by Liaw’s method. Differences between manual and web tool measurements were compared with a paired t-test and Bland-Altman analysis. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the average of manual measurements as compared to the web tool measurement in abduction angle (43.29 ± 7.05 vs 43.00 + 6.22, P = .85), anteversion angle (20.43 ± 7.62 vs 20.82 ± 7.37, P = .52), and ratio of the minor axis of the acetabular cup circumference in the AP radiograph to the total length of the acetabular head (0.42 ± 0.15 vs 0.44 ± 0.15, P = .18). The mean difference of average for abduction angle, anteversion angle, and ratio between the short axis of the transverse ellipse to the total length of the acetabular cup were −0.28, 0.39, and 0.02, respectively. Bland-Altman analysis for all 3 measurements displayed negligible systemic bias with random scattering. Conclusions: Automated measurements obtained with a novel web tool are in strong agreement with the manually obtained ground truth measurements. The web tool helps to eliminate interobserver differences that arise with manual annotation. The web tool has the potential to streamline acetabular measurements with enhanced accuracy.

Tuberculosis (TB) stigma remains a significant barrier to TB control efforts globally, especially in countries with a high TB burden. Studies about TB stigma done in Uganda so far have been limited in scope and focused on data collected health facilities. In this study we report TB related stigma at community level for the period 2021/2022. We used the 2021/22 Lot Quality Assurance Sampling (LQAS) data from a sample of 33,349 participants across 77 districts, to measure TB stigma determine factors associated. We included demographic characteristics, knowledge and participant perspectives as our study variables. Univariable and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify factors associated with TB stigma. TB stigma was assessed as a categorical variable (below or above the median) due to the skewness of the data when fitting the scores. The data set had equal proportions of males and females. The largest age group was 20-29 years old (38.47%). Most participants were married (62.94%) and had primary level education (65.80%). The TB stigma scores were assigned on a scale from 0 to 30, with an average score of 21.67 (±8.22) and a median score of 24 (19-28). Overall, 45.48% of participants had TB stigma scores above the median. Variations in TB stigma levels were observed across different districts. Factors associated with higher TB stigma included older age, higher education levels, urban residence, and TB knowledge. To reduce TB stigma and misinformation that can make an impact on TB response, community interventions should balance increasing awareness with minimizing fear. These interventions should be well-rounded and context-specific to address disparities within communities and bolster TB control efforts in the country.

Multiannual fruit bearing in fruit trees varies from regular bearing, with an almost steady yield from season to season, to alternate bearing, during which a year with a high fruit load (on-crop) is followed by a year of a low fruit load (off-crop). ‘Orri’ mandarin [Temple (Citrus temple hort. ex Y. Tanaka) × Dancy (Citrus tangerine hort. ex Tanaka)] exhibits a nonregular bearing pattern: steady for a few years and alternate for others. In nonregular or alternate-bearing cultivars, fruit load is thought to regulate flowering induction and development negatively the following year. In citrus, the bud meristem develops into a leafless inflorescence (generative), leafy inflorescence (mixed type, containing leaves and flowers in various ratios), or vegetative shoot, or remains dormant. Mixed-type inflorescences contribute to most of the final yield. Gibberellins inhibit flowering when applied at relatively high concentrations during the flowering induction period in the winter, but they are suggested to induce yield when applied at relatively low concentrations. We determined the effect of mild gibberellin application in an off-crop year on the productivity of ‘Orri’ mandarin, and whether it occurs through the induction of mixed-type inflorescences. Low-concentration, low-frequency gibberellin treatments were applied to trees during the winter when fruit load was high, resulting in a greater number of mixed vs. generative inflorescences at anthesis. An average increase of 40% in fruit number and yield weight was recorded in off-crop seasons at harvest, whereas no change was recorded in on-crop seasons. We discuss treatment efficiency in on-crop and off-crop years as a practical tool for increasing yield in low-crop seasons of ‘Orri’ mandarin.

Objective To explore the perceptions and experiences of mental health service users and healthcare workers regarding the implementation of district mental healthcare plans (DMHPs) in three district demonstration sites in Ghana.Design The study employed a qualitative design using reflexive thematic analysis. Interview data were analysed by combining inductive and deductive approaches.Setting The study was conducted in three DMHP districts in Ghana: Anloga (Volta), Asunafo North (Ahafo) and Bongo (Upper East). The districts were selected via national stakeholder consultations, using a DMHP framework. Data were collected between January 2023 and June 2023.Participants In-depth interviews were conducted with 28 primary healthcare workers who played key roles in the delivery of care in the demonstration districts. Thirty-two service users who are 18 years and above and have been receiving healthcare for the past year in the demonstration districts were also interviewed. Participants were purposively sampled.Findings Three main themes were identified: (1) factors supporting DMHP implementation, including capacity building, collaboration, awareness creation and acceptability; (2) challenges affecting DMHP implementation, such as inadequate resources and medication shortages and (3) perceived outcomes of the DMHPs, including improved well-being and daily functioning as well as changing attitudes towards mental health. Some district-level variations were noted in the intensity of challenges and outcomes.Conclusion The DMHPs have shown promise in improving mental healthcare in primary care settings in Ghana. However, addressing resource constraints and medication shortages and sustaining capacity building and awareness creation efforts will be crucial for successful scale-up. The perspectives of service users and healthcare providers offer valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners aiming to enhance integrated mental healthcare.
