Background: The COVID‐19 pandemic adversely affected children's mental health (MH) and changed patterns of MH emergency department (ED) utilization. Our objective was to assess how pediatric MH ED visits during the COVID‐19 pandemic differed from expected prepandemic trends. Methods: We retrospectively studied MH ED visits by children 5 to <18 years old at nine U.S. hospitals participating in the Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network Registry from 2017 to 2022. We described visit length by time period: prepandemic (January 2017–February 2020), early pandemic (March 2020–December 2020), midpandemic (2021), and late pandemic (2022). We estimated expected visit rates from prepandemic data using multivariable Poisson regression models. We calculated rate ratios (RRs) of observed to expected visits per 30 days during each pandemic time period, overall and by sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. Results: We identified 175,979 pediatric MH ED visits. Visit length exceeded 12 h for 7.3% prepandemic, 8.4% early pandemic, 15.0% midpandemic, and 19.2% late pandemic visits. During the early pandemic, observed visits per 30 days decreased relative to expected rates (RR 0.80, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.78–0.84), were similar to expected rates during the midpandemic (RR 1.01, 95% CI 0.96–1.07), and then decreased below expected rates during the late pandemic (RR 0.92, 95% CI 0.86–0.98). During the late pandemic, visit rates were higher than expected for females (RR 1.10, 95% CI 1.02–1.20) and for bipolar disorders (RR 1.83, 95% CI 1.38–2.75), schizophrenia spectrum disorders (RR 1.55, 95% CI 1.10–2.59), and substance‐related and addictive disorders (RR 1.50, 95% CI 1.18–2.05). Conclusions: During the late pandemic, pediatric MH ED visits decreased below expected rates; however, visits by females and for specific conditions remained elevated, indicating a need for increased attention to these groups. A retrospective analysis comparing a teriparatide biosimilar (RGB-10) with reference teriparatide for osteoporosis treatment in postmenopausal women at high fracture risk found them to be therapeutically equivalent. Both provided significant improvements in lumber spine BMD, TBS, and other parameters of bone health, assessed using multiple diagnostic methods., Purpose: To compare the therapeutic efficacy of a teriparatide biosimilar (RGB-10) with reference teriparatide for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at very high fracture risk., Methods: A retrospective analysis of 25 postmenopausal female patients treated for osteoporosis with RGB-10 for 24 months and a matched cohort of 25 patients treated with reference teriparatide. The following outcomes were assessed at baseline, 12 and 24 months: bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and integral, trabecular and cortical volumetric and surface BMD using 3D-SHAPER ® imaging, trabecular bone score (TBS), quantitative ultrasound (QUS) measurements, and high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HRpQCT) imaging of the radius and tibia., Results: No significant differences were observed between treatment groups in any of the measured parameters of BMD or bone health at baseline as well as in any timepoint when assessed using these various diagnostic methods. Increasingly, public health programs are recommending the use of information and communication technologies to address the psychosocial needs of Older Adults (OAs). Recently, several applications that allow access to communication and stimulation functionalities using digital interactive television (DiTV) have been developed. The use of the television interface to access digital services seems to help meet several accessibility and usability needs of OAs. However, its use entails other challenges related to different dimensions (organizational, technological, ethical, etc.). This study aims to identify the factors that enable or hinder the use of DiTV by OAs living in geriatric institutions. A qualitative interview case study was conducted in three French geriatric facilities. A total of 25 semi-structured interviews were carried out with residents and care professionals, between February and April 2022, to identify enablers and barriers to DiTV use. Data were processed using a thematic deductive analysis inspired by a multidimensional Health Technology Assessment model. The analysis showed that DiTV use may be limited by organizational (e.g., workload), technological (e.g., ergonomic issues), human (e.g., health issues), ethical (e.g., privacy), and safety factors (e.g., frustration due to technical problems). A summary of these factors and five recommendations for DiTV implementation in geriatric settings are presented in this paper.

Background: Fatty liver disease is a common hepatic disorder that remains undiagnosed due to the high number of asymptomatic patients and lack of a proper noninvasive diagnostic tool. Liver biopsy, the gold standard of liver steatosis diagnosis, is an invasive method that can be replaced by fibroscan. Fibroscan can detect liver steatosis with high sensitivity and specificity, but it is not accessible around the world. In this study, we compared ultrasonography (US) as a cheap and accessible device with fibroscan method in detecting patients with liver steatosis., Materials and Methods: We enrolled 77 patients in this study. US and fibroscan were done in each patient at a single day. Liver steatosis stages were recorded using US and fibroscan. The diagnostic performance of US was calculated, using fibroscan as the reference method., Results: The sensitivity and specificity of US in detecting fatty liver disease using fibroscan as a standard method were 73% and 69%, respectively., Conclusion: Based on sensitivity and specificity achieved from US, this study suggests that ultrasound is a suitable method for detecting patients with liver steatosis obviating liver biopsy and fibroscan., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts of interest., (Copyright: © 2019 Advanced Biomedical Research.)

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder, which is associated with memory loss and behavioral abnormalities. The cellular and molecular mechanisms that led to hippocampal dysfunction in bile duct ligation (BDL)-induced HE and neuroprotective mechanisms of FTY720 administration were evaluated using whole-cell patch clamp, field-potential recording, western blot, stereology and behavioral experiments. The animals were divided into 4 groups of control (n = 24), sham (n = 21), BDL + V (n = 21) and BDL + FTY720 (n = 20), each having three subgroups. The first subgroup was used for field potential, western blot and stereology experiments. The second and third subgroups were used for behavioral experiments and whole cell patch clamp recording, respectively. The BDL led to considerable loss of hippocampal neurons and apoptosis, along with large impairments in their intrinsic electrophysiological properties, including decrease of firing frequency and increases of first spike latency (FSL), AHP amplitude, irregularity of firing, and half-width, as well as impaired long-term synaptic plasticity and memory. Importantly, FTY720 decreased AHP amplitude probably by direct inhibition of Ca 2+ channels and/or KCa 2+ currents and improved the FSL and firing irregularity and frequency possibly by decreasing A-type K + currents in the BDL + FTY720 group. FTY720 administration in the BDL rats also decreased the release probability, which was evident by the increased paired-pulse ratio, but the increased number of readily releasable pool (RRP) of neurotransmitter. Moreover, the AHP improvement and RRP increment most likely led to recovery of LTP and memory performance.
