The Nekor Watershed, situated in the northwest corner of Africa, experiences significant climatic variability, posing challenges for water management. This study assesses hydrological drought in the Nekor Watershed from 1945 to 2016 and analyzes its socio-economic impacts on agriculture and population distribution. The purpose of this research is to understand the extent and trends of hydrological drought in the Nekor Watershed and its socio-economic consequences, particularly on agriculture and population dynamics. The study employs the Standardized Runoff Efficiency Index (SDI), drought duration, severity (S), magnitude (M), and relative frequency (RF) metrics, along with the Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's Slope analysis to evaluate hydrological drought. It integrates statistically representative data on cereal crop yields, livestock populations, and results from the General Population and Housing Census to understand the socio-economic impacts. Analysis reveals substantial climatic variability with pronounced dry and wet periods. Notably, the autumn season exhibits a weak positive trend in hydrological drought, indicating a slight increase in severity over the years. Conversely, the spring season shows a negative trend in hydrological drought, indicating a decrease in severity over the years, especially in the month of May. A broader trend towards increasing hydrological drought emerges, particularly since the 1980s. These dry decades pose significant challenges for the region's socio-economic sectors, including agriculture and population distribution. The study is limited by the availability and quality of historical hydrological and socio-economic data, which may affect the precision of trend analyses and impact assessments. Future research could benefit from more granular and continuous data sets. Understanding the trends and impacts of hydrological drought in the Nekor Watershed provides critical insights for water management policies and strategies, helping to mitigate socio-economic risks associated with drought. This study is novel in its comprehensive analysis of long-term hydrological drought trends in the Nekor Watershed and their socio-economic impacts. The integration of diverse data sets and advanced statistical methods enhances the robustness of the findings, contributing significantly to the scientific understanding of drought dynamics in this region.

Crop production stands as a pivotal pillar of global food security, but its sustainability faces complex challenges from plant diseases, which pose a substantial threat to agricultural productivity. Climate change significantly alters the dynamics of plant pathogens, primarily through changes in temperature, humidity, and precipitation patterns, which can enhance the virulence and spread of various plant diseases. Indeed, the increased frequency of extreme weather events, which is a direct consequence of climate change, creates favorable conditions for outbreaks of plant diseases. As global temperatures rise, the geographic range of many plant pathogens is expanding, exposing new regions and species to diseases previously limited to warmer climates. Climate change not only affects the prevalence and severity of plant diseases but also influences the effectiveness of disease management strategies, necessitating adaptive approaches in agricultural practices. This review presents a thorough examination of the relationship between climate change and plant pathogens and carefully provides an analysis of the interplay between climatic shifts and disease dynamics. In addition to insights into the development of effective strategies for countering the adverse impacts of climate change on plant diseases, these insights hold significant promise for bolstering global crop production resilience against mounting environmental challenges.

The LMWL was re-plotted from the isotopic analysis data (δ2H and δ18O) for rainwater samples collected from three stations in Baghdad city in the current study and data from previous studies. Four samples of shallow groundwater and five samples from the Tigris River were isotopically analyzed for 2H and 18O using a Liquid-Water Stable Isotope Analyzer (LWSIA). The samples were collected from the Al-Jaderia area within the University of Baghdad. The analysis was done against Vienna Standard Main Oceanic Water (VSMOW). The isotopic composition of groundwater ranges between -43.91‰ and -37.57 ‰ for 2H with an average of -40.06±2.7 ‰, while it ranges between -6.28‰ and -6.01‰ for 18O with an average of -6.14±0.1‰. These values are slightly more depleted compared to the isotopic composition of the Tigris River water (-38.79 ‰ to -37.87 ‰) for 2H with an average of -38.05±0.9‰ and between -6.23‰ to -5.11 ‰ for 18O with an average of -5.74±0.4 ‰. This is a logical result since the river is usually fed with fresh new rainwater, which isotopically is relatively more enriched. The current study confirms that the Local Meteoric Water Line (LMWL) has a formula of δ 2H‰ = 7.5 δ 18O‰ + 13. The LMWL is located above the Global MWL by +13.9‰ toward the Eastern Mediterranean (EMMWL δ2H‰ = 8 δ 18O‰ + 22), indicating the origin rainwater from the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The groundwater and surface water isotopic compositions were below the LMWL due to the evaporation of shallow groundwater. There is interconnection between river water and groundwater, directly or by recharge from irrigation water. Iraq may have two different MWLs, one for the northeastern region and the other for the middle, western and southern Iraq. The MWL for the northern eastern region of Iraq is close to that of the EMMWL, indicating Mediterranean climate and vapor source, while the rest of the areas of Iraq have MWL with various isotopic compositions affected by more hot climate in these regions and by the continental tropical air masses.

Abstract Abu Marawat area in the Central Eastern Desert of Egypt is a very promising mineralization district located in the Golden Triangle area. The current study provides an integrated approach from multisource datasets including; remote sensing, airborne geophysical spectrometry and magnetic data supported by field studies and spectroscopic analyses for delineating potential mineralization localities. Several remote sensing techniques were adopted including; Band Ratios, Relative Band Depth, Mineralogical Indices, Spectral Angle Mapper, and Constrained Energy Minimization. These techniques showed that the alteration mineral assemblage is mainly, kaolinite, sericite, and iron oxides, with less abundant chlorite, epidote, and carbonates. In addition, the radiometry data were processed to map the localities with the highest possibility of potassic alteration abundance by integrating the potassium distribution, K/eTh ratio, and the F-parameter maps. The surface and subsurface linear structural features were also mapped using Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and aeromagnetic data, respectively. The surface linear structures were found exhibiting E-W and NE-SW trends, while, the subsurface structures showed dominant NW–SE trend. All the depicted fault trends match well with the local and regional geological and tectonic setting of the study area suggesting structural control on the mineralization in this area. Integration between the results obtained from both the remote sensing and the geophysical data was conducted by a GIS weighted overlay model. The obtained mineralization potentiality map highlights eight potential localities for mineralization. The accuracy of the adopted methodology was demonstrated through fieldwork and spectral analyses; several alteration indicators were observed, including quartz veins, iron oxides, kaolinite, malachite, montmorillonite, chlorite, talc, and sericite alteration indicator minerals. The adopted remote sensing-geophysical approach showed being very effective for mapping the hydrothermal gold-related alteration zones, and is recommended for other similar investigations.

Abstract Background Social network analysis of animal societies allows scientists to test hypotheses about social evolution, behaviour, and dynamic processes. However, the accuracy of estimated metrics depends on data characteristics like sample proportion, sample size, and frequency. A protocol is needed to assess for bias and robustness of social network metrics estimated for the animal populations especially when a limited number of individuals are monitored. Methods We used GPS telemetry datasets of five ungulate species to combine known social network approaches with novel ones into a comprehensive five-step protocol. To quantify the bias and uncertainty in the network metrics obtained from a partial population, we presented novel statistical methods which are particularly suited for autocorrelated data, such as telemetry relocations. The protocol was validated using a sixth species, the fallow deer, with a known population size where $$\sim 85\%$$ ∼ 85 % of the individuals have been directly monitored. Results Through the protocol, we demonstrated how pre-network data permutations allow researchers to assess non-random aspects of interactions within a population. The protocol assesses bias in global network metrics, obtains confidence intervals, and quantifies uncertainty of global and node-level network metrics based on the number of nodes in the network. We found that global network metrics like density remained robust even with a lowered sample size, while local network metrics like eigenvector centrality were unreliable for four of the species. The fallow deer network showed low uncertainty and bias even at lower sampling proportions, indicating the importance of a thoroughly sampled population while demonstrating the accuracy of our evaluation methods for smaller samples. Conclusions The protocol allows researchers to analyse GPS-based radio-telemetry or other data to determine the reliability of social network metrics. The estimates enable the statistical comparison of networks under different conditions, such as analysing daily and seasonal changes in the density of a network. The methods can also guide methodological decisions in animal social network research, such as sampling design and allow more accurate ecological inferences from the available data. The R package aniSNA enables researchers to implement this workflow on their dataset, generating reliable inferences and guiding methodological decisions.

Abstract Machine learning and remote sensing techniques are widely accepted as valuable, cost-effective tools in lithological discrimination and mineralogical investigations. The current study represents an attempt to use machine learning classification along with several remote sensing techniques being applied to Landsat-8/9 satellite data to discriminate the various outcropping lithological rock units at the Duwi Shear Belt (DSB) area in the Central Eastern Desert of Egypt. Multi-class machine learning classification, multiple conventional remote sensing mapping techniques, spectral separability analysis based on the Jeffries-Matusita (J-M) distance measure, fieldwork, and petrographic investigations were integrated to enhance the lithological discrimination of the exposed rock units at DSB area. The well-recognized machine learning classifier (Support Vector Machine—SVM) was adopted in this study, with training data determined carefully based on enhancing the lithological discrimination attained from various remote sensing techniques of False Color Composites (FCC), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and Minimum Noise Fraction (MNF), along with the fieldwork data and the previously published geologic maps. High overall accuracy of the SVM classification was obtained, however, inspection of the individual rock unit classes’ accuracies revealed lower accuracy for certain types of rock units which were also found associated with lower separability scores as well. Among the least separable rock units were; metagabbro rocks that showed high spectral similarity with the volcaniclastic metasediments rocks, and the metaultramafics of the ophiolitic mélange showed spectral attitude of high correlation to that of the Hammamat volcanosedimentary rocks. Target-oriented Color Ratio Composites (CRC) technique was implemented to better discriminate these hardly separable rock units. A final integrated geological map was obtained comprising the various discriminated Neoproterozoic basement rock units of the DSB area. The successfully mapped litho-units include; Meatiq Group (amphibolites, gneissic granitoids, and mylonitized granitoids), ophiolitic mélange (metaultramafics, metagabbro-amphibolites, and volcaniclastic metasediments), Dokhan volcanics, Hammamat sediments, and granites. An adequate description of these rock units was also given in light of the conducted intense fieldwork and petrographic investigations.

Abstract Groundwater is considered the most important natural resource to mankind. Groundwater constitutes an important part of the hydrological cycle and is more prone to pollution. Dumpsite located in close proximity to groundwater resources is highly susceptible to leachates pollution. Predicting the susceptibility of groundwater pollution is crucial to address industry-standard codes for groundwater flow, contaminant transport, local to regional-scale water quality, and source water protection issues. Therefore, predicting heavy metal transport in groundwater around Lemna dumpsite in Cross River State, Nigeria, was examined. Soil samples were purposively collected with a soil Auger, along a straight line at (5 m, 25 m and 50 m) in the dumpsite. Water samples were purposively collected from five (5) boreholes close to Lemna dumpsite. The study utilized pumping test method to obtain data for the analysis of heavy metal transport in groundwater. Data analysis of the laboratory results of soil and borehole water quality focuses on arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, and mercury. Drought had affected the crops production in Morocco, during the last decade. Plants breeding is still a solution to increase crops tolerance for water scarcity. Using natural biofertilizer based on microorganisms still a good practice to enhance the resilience of agriculture to drought. The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of water shortage and use of a biofertilizer based on the strain of Pseudomonas putida on five genotypes of eggplants selected for drought tolerance under the semi-arid of the northeast of Morocco. Two irrigations regimes: 100% (amount of water irrigation made by growers) and 50% of this amount with and without the biofertilizer (1x108 UFC/g). The biofertilizer was applied three times during the plant growth stages. The experiment was conducted at commercial farm production and using a randomized complete block design. Plants were organized in blocks containing 3 plants for each genotype and repeated in 5 repetitions. Crops were planted on August 3rd, 2022, and experiments ended on January 2d, 2023. The results showed different responses among the genotypes in terms of growth. The effect of Pseudomonas on plant height showed that there was a significant increase, at 100% irrigation for C14, B3, C8, B5 and C11 with 20%, 19%, 17%, 14,29% and 12,5%, respectively compared with the control. For C8 and B3, when subjected to 100% water with biofertilizer, there was an increase in the average number of fruits compared to 100% water without the biofertilizer. The highest yield was recorded with B5 under 100% irrigation + fertilizer (1,35 kg/plant). Water shortage impacted the productivity of all genotypes and the fruit number and yield increased with the use of the biofertilizer. Our study is still valuable under the conditions of this trial and more experiments will be needed at several seasons and at different growing conditions.

PURPOSEMost research on artificial intelligence–based auto-contouring as template (AI-assisted contouring) for organs-at-risk (OARs) stem from high-income countries. The effect and safety are, however, likely to depend on local factors. This study aimed to investigate the effects of AI-assisted contouring and teaching on contouring time and contour quality among radiation oncologists (ROs) working in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).MATERIALS AND METHODSNinety-seven ROs were randomly assigned to either manual or AI-assisted contouring of eight OARs for two head-and-neck cancer cases with an in-between teaching session on contouring guidelines. Thereby, the effect of teaching (yes/no) and AI-assisted contouring (yes/no) was quantified. Second, ROs completed short-term and long-term follow-up cases all using AI assistance. Contour quality was quantified with Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) between ROs' contours and expert consensus contours. Groups were compared using absolute differences in medians with 95% CIs.RESULTSAI-assisted contouring without previous teaching increased absolute DSC for optic nerve (by 0.05 [0.01; 0.10]), oral cavity (0.10 [0.06; 0.13]), parotid (0.07 [0.05; 0.12]), spinal cord (0.04 [0.01; 0.06]), and mandible (0.02 [0.01; 0.03]). Contouring time decreased for brain stem (–1.41 [–2.44; –0.25]), mandible (–6.60 [–8.09; –3.35]), optic nerve (–0.19 [–0.47; –0.02]), parotid (–1.80 [–2.66; –0.32]), and thyroid (–1.03 [–2.18; –0.05]). Without AI-assisted contouring, teaching increased DSC for oral cavity (0.05 [0.01; 0.09]) and thyroid (0.04 [0.02; 0.07]), and contouring time increased for mandible (2.36 [–0.51; 5.14]), oral cavity (1.42 [–0.08; 4.14]), and thyroid (1.60 [–0.04; 2.22]).CONCLUSIONThe study suggested that AI-assisted contouring is safe and beneficial to ROs working in LMICs. Prospective clinical trials on AI-assisted contouring should, however, be conducted upon clinical implementation to confirm the effects.

Abstract Expansive soils are known to be hazardous materials for infrastructure due to their high shrinking or swelling potential. Understanding the shrinking factors of expansive soils such as montmorillonite (MMT) is essential for predicting their mechanical properties. The interactions between the components of Na-MMT clays, e.g., MMT layer–layer (LL), layer–cation (LC), layer–water (LW) and water–cation (WC), are responsible for its shrinking behavior. In this study, molecular dynamics simulation and grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the interaction energy evolution in the layered structure of Na-MMT for the shrinkage mechanisms analysis of clay. The results of simulation indicate that the magnitude of the interaction energy contributed by the interlayer cations dehydration is the driving force of the interlayer shrinkage. Furthermore, in the hydrated state, with one water layer, two water layers and three water layers, the attractive interactions between WC and LW, maintain the stability of the clay layers. However, at the dry state, the interaction energy between layers and cations appears to be the most essential component in holding the stacked layers together, which provides structural stability to the clay sheets. Finally, the study reveals that intermolecular interactions contribute to the mechanical properties of clays such as cohesive and elastic properties.

Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology and unpredictable course. The aim of the work was to assess the levels of adropin, fibroblast growth factor-1 (FGF-1), and Toll-like receptor-1 (TLR1) biomarkers in IBD patients compared to controls and evaluate the gene expression of TNF-α as a marker of disease severity. Methods Adropin, fasting serum FGF-1 levels, TLR1, and TNF-α were measured in 60 IBD patients. They were also compared with 58 healthy controls matching age and gender. Moreover, the blood cells cDNA copy number of TNF-α were determined as a marker of severity. Results Adropin and TLR1 levels were significantly lower in patients than controls. Abstract Background The reduced rate of potato production may occur under different conditions such as field, transit, storage, and marketing. Potato cultivation is frequently affected by various pathogens, among which Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum is a notorious bacterial pathogen responsible for causing bacterial soft rot disease. This pathogen poses a significant threat to potato production worldwide, resulting in substantial economic losses and food security concerns. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of three bacterial bioagents, namely Brevundimonas bullata, Bacillus siamensis, and Bacillus velezensis, against P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, a notorious bacterium responsible for causing potato tuber soft rot disease. Results Fifteen isolates were isolated from rhizosphere of potato plants. Out of 15 isolates, 3 isolates, No. 1, 11, and 12, showed highly antagonistic property to control the growth of P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum in vitro. They were identified as B. bullata, B. velezensis, and B. siamensis, by using 16S rRNA nucleotide sequence analysis. Results from these experiments revealed that three bioagents exhibited notable inhibitory effects on the growth of the pathogenic bacterium. However, B. velezensis stood out as the most effective inhibitor among the tested bioagents, showcasing the highest level of bacteriostatic activity (2.6 cm). The findings from the in vitro experiments provided promising insights into the potential of these bacterial bioagents as natural antagonists against potato tuber soft rot disease. Building upon these promising results, the study recommended the utilization of all tested bioagents for controlling soft rot disease in potato tubers, especially during storage conditions where the risk of bacterial proliferation is heightened. Treatment with B. bullata, B. siamensis, and B. velezensis demonstrates varying degrees of efficacy in controlling the progression of soft rot disease. Notably, B. velezensis shows promising results with relatively low disease severity scores across all time points compared to the other treatments. B. velezensis demonstrates the lowest disease severity percentage at 7.00% compared to the other treatments. Conclusions The study underscores the significant potential of B. bullata, B. siamensis, and B. velezensis as effective biological control agents against potato tuber soft rot disease. By targeting the causative agent directly, these bioagents offer a promising avenue for mitigating the detrimental impact of soft rot disease on potato production, thereby contributing to improved crop yield and quality.

Introduction: Acute accidental poisoning in children remains a significant public health issue and a predictable cause of morbidity around the world. To take preventive measures, it is necessary to identify the pattern of this problem. Objective: To determine the extent and characteristics of paediatric poisoning, an epidemiological investigation specific to each country is required. The goal of our research was to determine the current pattern of acute poisoning in children between (0−5) years old in Jordan. Methods: This retrospective study performs a descriptive analysis of the Jordan University Hospital’s National Poison Information Center (NPIC) database and describes the epidemiology of acute poisoning in children between (0−5) years old during a period of two years (2018–2019). Results: Paediatric poisoning (0−5) years old accounts for approximately 88% of poisoning cases in Jordan between 2018 and 2019.Out of 3531 paediatric poisoning cases, 44.9% of cases were in children between (2−3) years old, 63.4% of subjects were male. 40.9% of calls were from governmental hospitals. Most cases occurred at home (98.7%) and were unintentional (98.6%). Medication poisoning was the commonest among cases (71.0%). Besides, 89.4% were asymptomatic at the time of call, and Central Nervous System (CNS) symptoms being the most common (3.6%) among the symptomatic cases. Conclusions: Most cases of paediatric poisoning handled by the NPIC was due to medications. To prevent or minimize these cases, it is necessary to educate parents and other caregivers about proper medication storage and use, and in case of poisoning, urgent referral to health facilities is required.

Introduction: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited single-gene autosomal recessive disorder. Red cell exchange (RCE) refers to the removal of diseased red blood cells (RBCs) in exchange for healthy donor RBCs. In the present study, RCE was performed in patients with SCD with different crises such as acute chest syndrome, vaso-occlusive crisis, and sequestration crisis. The study was conducted to determine the clinical efficacy of RCE in SCD and to study the clinical profile of the study population. The study will help generate data to support and improve existing knowledge on the clinical efficacy of RCE in SCD. Methods: A prospective observational study of RBC exchange in patients of SCD with the acute crisis was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in South Gujarat including the effect of RCE as a treatment modality in patients of SCD. The study was conducted following guidelines given by the American Society for Apheresis. Results: This study was conducted among 8 patients (7 female and 1 male) with varying age groups from 10 to 29 years. Clinical findings of patients, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation got improved after the procedure. There was an improvement in PaO2 from 51.63 to 73 after the procedure. There was a decrease in mean sickle hemoglobin (Hb S) level (from 68.452% to 16.438% after procedure) and Hb F level (from 11.938% to 3.063% after procedure) with an increase in Hb A level (from 13.862% to 70.152% after procedure). Conclusion: In the present study, automated RCE procedures in patients with SCD were well tolerated and effective for both acute and chronic complications of SCD in terms of relieving the symptoms by reducing the Hb S level postprocedures.

Abstract Groundwater is a valuable shared resource in the Moulouya Basin, but it has been in decline due to recent years of low rainfall and rapid population growth. To support socio-economic development, there is increased demand for this precious resource. This paper presents a standard methodology for delimiting potential groundwater zones using geographic information systems (GIS), an integrated analytical hierarchy process (AHP), and remote sensing techniques. Seven parameters that monitor the presence and mobility of groundwater, including drainage density, lithology, slope, precipitation, land use/land cover, distance to river, and lineament density, were incorporated into a raster data model using ArcGIS software. AHP-based expert knowledge was used to prepare a groundwater potential index and assign weights to the thematic layers. The study classified the area into five zones of varying groundwater potential: very high (26%), high (51%), moderate (13%), poor (9%), and very poor (1%). The accuracy of the model was validated by comparing the Groundwater Potential Zones map with data from 96 wells and boreholes across the basin. The validity of the results was confirmed by comparing them with the specific yield of the aquifer in the study area, yielding a high correlation coefficient (R 2) of 0.79. The analysis revealed that 89.5% of the boreholes were situated in the high and very high potential zones, demonstrating the reliability and robustness of the employed approach. These findings can aid decision-making and planning for sustainable groundwater use in the water-stressed region.

Recent advances in nanoscience and nanotechnology have revolutionized the medical field, particularly in the treatment and prevention of disease. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are considered one of the best supreme and most important nanomaterials with a variety of compulsive nanomaterial having diverse array of multifunctional bioapplications. The current study focuses on the green biosynthesis of AgNPs using polysaccharides extracted from Olea europaea leaves. The synthesized AgNPs were thoroughly analyzed and characterized using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques including, UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction, Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The absorption peak at 440 nm showed a high plasmon resonance band, confirming the formation of green AgNPs by the reduction of Ag+ ions to Ag0. FTIR analysis showed the appearance and extension of different functional groups. The results of EDX and SEM confirmed the synthesis of AgNPs with spherical shape, crystalline structure, and an average size of 64.42 nm. The biosynthesized AgNPs possessed improved antimicrobial activities, indicating the importance of biosynthesized NPs in the pharmaceutical industry. In addition, the biosynthesized AgNPs were biocompatible and exhibited anti-inflammatory activity (86.29%), almost similar to that of a standard drug (87.78%) at a concentration of 500 µL/mL. The polysaccharides obtained from O. europaea could be considered as effective reducing agent, leading to an environmentally friendly synthesis of stable and biologically important AgNPs with a wide range of applications.

Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) continues to pose a threat to communities worldwide and remains a significant public health issue in several countries. We assessed the role of heteroresistance and efflux pumps in bedaquiline (BDQ)-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates. Methods Nineteen clinical isolates were included in the study, of which fifteen isolates were classified as MDR or XDR, while four isolates were fully susceptible. To evaluate BDQ heteroresistance, the Microplate Alamar Blue Assay (MABA) method was employed. For screening mixed infections, MIRU-VNTR was performed on clinical isolates. Mutations in the atpE and Rv0678 genes were determined based on next-generation sequencing data. Additionally, real-time PCR was applied to assess the expression of efflux pump genes in the absence and presence of verapamil (VP). Results All 15 drug-resistant isolates displayed resistance to BDQ. Among the 19 total isolates, 21.05% (4/19) exhibited a heteroresistance pattern to BDQ. None of the isolates carried a mutation of the atpE and Rv0678 genes associated with BDQ resistance. Regarding the MIRU-VNTR analysis, most isolates (94.73%) showed the Beijing genotype. Fifteen (78.9%) isolates showed a significant reduction in BDQ MIC after VP treatment. The efflux pump genes of Rv0676c, Rv1258c, Rv1410c, Rv1634, Rv1819, Rv2459, Rv2846, and Rv3065 were overexpressed in the presence of BDQ. Conclusions Our results clearly demonstrated the crucial role of heteroresistance and efflux pumps in BDQ resistance. Additionally, we established a direct link between the Rv0676c gene and BDQ resistance. The inclusion of VP significantly reduced the MIC of BDQ in both drug-susceptible and drug-resistant clinical isolates.

Introduction: Alemtuzumab, a humanized monoclonal antibody indicated for the treatment of adult patients with active relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS), has been associated with increased risk of autoimmune adverse events, including thyroid disorders, immune thrombocytopenia, and renal diseases. Renal immune-mediated adverse events, which have been reported in 0.3% of patients treated with alemtuzumab in MS clinical trials, typically occur within 39 months after the last drug administration. However, no consensus has been reached regarding the management of patients who develop glomerulonephritis after treatment with alemtuzumab. Case Presentation: We report the cases of two young adults with MS who developed biopsy-proven severe glomerulonephritis after alemtuzumab treatment. Both patients, including a 32-year-old female patient who developed membranous nephropathy and a 31-year-old male who developed drug-induced podocytopathy, were treated successfully with the calcineurin inhibitor tacrolimus followed by the anti-CD20 antibody rituximab. Conclusion: Regular renal function monitoring is required in patients who may rarely develop glomerulonephritis following treatment with alemtuzumab. There is no clear consensus on case management. In both cases, immunosuppressive therapy, which was necessary due to disease severity, resulted in successful remission, highlighting the potential utility of this approach.

Reliable information plays a pivotal role in sustainable urban planning. With advancements in computer technology, geoinformatics tools enable accurate identification of land use and land cover (LULC) in both spatial and temporal dimensions. Given the need for precise information to enhance decision-making, it is imperative to assess the performance and reliability of classification algorithms in detecting LULC changes. While research on the application of machine learning algorithms in LULC evaluation is widespread in many countries, it remains limited in Zambia and Sri Lanka. Hence, we aimed to assess the reliability and performance of support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms for detecting changes in land use and land cover taking Lusaka and Colombo City as the study area from 1995 to 2023 using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), and Operational Land Imager (OLI). The results reveal that the RF and ANN models exhibited superior performance, both achieving Mean Overall Accuracy (MOA) of 96% for Colombo and 96% and 94% for Lusaka, respectively. Meanwhile, the SVM model yielded Overall Accuracy (OA) ranging between 77% and 94% for the years 1995 and 2023. Further, RF algorithm notably produced slightly higher OA and kappa coefficients, ranging between 0.92 and 0.97, when compared to both the ANN and SVM models, across both study areas. A predominant land use change was observed as the expansion of vegetation by 11,990 ha (60.4%), primarily through the conversion of 1,926 ha of bare lands into vegetation in Lusaka during 1995–2005. However, a noteworthy shift was observed as built-up areas experienced significant growth from 2005 to 2023, with a total increase of 25,110 ha (71%). However, despite the conversion of vegetation to built-up areas during the entire period from 1995 to 2023, there was still a net gain of over 11,000 ha (53.4%) in vegetation cover. In case of Colombo, built-up areas expanded by 1,779 ha (81.5%), while vegetation land decreased by 1,519 ha (62.3%) during concerned period. LULC simulation also indicated a 160-ha expansion of built-up areas during the 2023–2035 period in Lusaka. Likewise, Colombo saw a rise in built-up areas by 337 ha within the same period. Overall, the RF algorithm outperformed the ANN and SVM algorithms. Additionally, the prediction and simulation results indicate an upward trend in built-up areas in both scenarios. The resultant land cover maps provide a crucial baseline that will be invaluable for urban planning and policy development agencies in both countries.

BackgroundChimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has attracted considerable attention since its recent endorsement by the Food and Drug Administration, as it has emerged as a promising immunotherapeutic modality within the landscape of oncology. This study explores the prognostic utility of [18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography ([18F]FDG PET) in lymphoma patients undergoing CAR T-cell therapy. Through meta-analysis, pooled hazard ratio (HR) values were calculated for specific PET metrics in this context.MethodsPubMed, Scopus, and Ovid databases were explored to search for relevant topics. Dataset retrieval from inception until March 12, 2024, was carried out. The primary endpoints were impact of specific PET metrics on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) before and after treatment. Data from the studies were extracted for a meta-analysis using Stata 17.0.ResultsOut of 27 studies identified for systematic review, 15 met the criteria for meta-analysis. Baseline OS analysis showed that total metabolic tumor volume (TMTV) had the highest HR of 2.66 (95% CI: 1.52-4.66), followed by Total-body total lesion glycolysis (TTLG) at 2.45 (95% CI: 0.98-6.08), and maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) at 1.30 (95% CI: 0.77-2.19). TMTV and TTLG were statistically significant (p < 0.0001), whereas SUVmax was not (p = 0.33). For PFS, TMTV again showed the highest HR at 2.65 (95% CI: 1.63-4.30), with TTLG at 2.35 (95% CI: 1.40-3.93), and SUVmax at 1.48 (95% CI: 1.08-2.04), all statistically significant (p ≤ 0.01). The ΔSUVmax was a significant predictor for PFS with an HR of 2.05 (95% CI: 1.13-3.69, p = 0.015).Conclusion[18F]FDG PET parameters are valuable prognostic tools for predicting outcome of lymphoma patients undergoing CAR T-cell therapy.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in business settings is rapidly increasing, yet significant limitations hinder its effective use and adoption. Understanding these limitations and their interrelationships is crucial for enhancing AI implementation. Despite growing research, there is a lack of a comprehensive model that systematically identifies and elucidates the factors influencing AI limitations in business environments. This study employs Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM), combined with MICMAC analysis and an extensive literature review, to develop such a model. We identified 15 key factors and analyzed their driving and dependence powers to understand their interrelationships. Most factors, such as contextual understanding, transparency, intuition, emotional intelligence, ethics, bias, tacit knowledge, creativity, credibility, and reliability, were found to be autonomous. Accountability and privacy emerged as the strongest driving forces, while trust and adaptability exhibited the highest dependence and lowest driving power. This research offers a comprehensive understanding of AI limitations and their interrelationships, providing valuable insights for managers and businesses. The findings can aid in making more informed decisions about AI implementation and in developing strategies to mitigate these limitations. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of combining AI with human insight to overcome these challenges. However, using the ISM technique could involve subjective judgment from the experts.

Regional magnetic data in the southeastern segment of the Nigerian Niger Delta were evaluated with the aim of mapping deep-seated tectonic elements. Enhanced filtering operations and 3D forward modelling were applied on the magnetic data. These geologic features triggered the formation of rollover anticlines and faults that serve as structural traps in the study area. The filtered residual magnetic data revealed geologic structures characterized with NE - SW, N - S, and E - W orientations. The 3-D models detected the faulted crustal blocks, gradient zones, and intra-basement compositional magnetic variations. Furthermore, some prominent horst and graben structures as well as related normal faults characterized with distinct magnetic signatures were observed. Faults of base magnetic (of various compositions) were observed to be the fabricating mechanisms of the magnetic anomalies. Collectively, these structures influenced the patterns of magnetic anomalies with direct effects on the hydrocarbon trapping systems, as well as the pathways and accumulation zones for hydrothermal minerals. On the whole, the interpreted results revealed that the basement surface is rippling. Additionally, the depth result showed sedimentary thicknesses that ranged from 4–10 km. Again, the estimated crustal thickness varied from 14 to 19 km. This study has displayed the capabilities of the magnetic method in mapping the depth and configuration of basement rocks, which are crucial in controlling the formation of structural traps. Identifying these basement structures early helps in understanding the overall geological framework and potential hydrocarbon systems.

The current study inspects the therapeutic effects of orally ingested insulin-loaded chitosan nanobeads (INS-CsNBs) with a pectin-dextrin (PD) coating on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes in Wistar rats. The study also assessed antioxidant effects in pancreatic tissue homogenate, insulin, C-peptide, and inflammatory markers interleukin-1 beta and interleukin-6 (IL-1β and IL-6) in serum. Additionally, histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of insulin granules, oxidative stress, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB P65), and sirtuin-1 (SIRT-1) protein detection, as well as gene expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2 (Nrf2), heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl2), and Bcl-2-associated X protein (Bax) in pancreatic tissue were investigated. After induction of diabetes with STZ, rats were allocated into 6 groups: the normal control (C), the diabetic control (D), and the diabetic groups treated with INS-CsNBs coated with PD shell (50 IU/kg) (NF), free oral insulin (10 IU/kg) (FO), CsNBs-PD shell (50 IU/kg) (NB), and subcutaneous insulin (10 IU/kg) (Sc). The rats were treated daily for four weeks. Treatment of diabetic rats with INS-CsNBs coated with PD shell resulted in a significant improvement in blood glucose levels, elevated antioxidant activities, decreased NF-κB P65, IL-1β, and IL-6 levels, upregulated Nrf-2 and HO-1, in addition to a marked improvement in the histological architecture and integrity compared to the diabetic group. The effects of oral INS-CsNBs administration were comparable to those of subcutaneous insulin. In conclusion, oral administration of INS-loaded Cs-NBs with a pectin-dextrin shell demonstrated an ameliorative effect on STZ-induced diabetes, avoiding the drawbacks of subcutaneous insulin.

Groundwater potential in Morocco’s Souss-Massa mountainous basin (SMMB) is being identified using geospatial tools and geological data. We deployed four mathematical models, namely Data-Driven Multi-index Overlay (DMIO), Geometric Average (GA), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Logistic Regression (LR), to establish data-driven patterns among the nine influencing factors, primarily drainage density, permeability, slope, distance to rivers, elevation, lineament density, distance to lineaments, intersection node density, and rainfall. Based on the Concentration-Area (C-A) fractal approach, the findings of the four models were developed and classified into five levels of potentiality ranging from very low to very high. The regions designated as having high and very high potentialities for the DMIO, GA, SVM, and LR models, respectively, account for 22.44 %, 9.80 %, 19.36 %, and 26.77 % of the overall basin. We validated the models by calculating each model's area under the ROC curve (AUC). The estimated AUC values are more than 70 %, suggesting the model performs well. The four models' performance was compared, revealing that the SVM model outperforms the others. Gravimetric data shows that possible groundwater zones closely coincide with gravimetric lineaments. The findings of this study can provide valuable insights to decision-makers, allowing them to improve decision-making processes and develop holistic groundwater resource management in the Souss-Massa mountainous basin (SMMB).

BackgroundSynovial fluid (SF) is often used for diagnostic and research purposes as it reflects the local inflammatory environment. Owing to its complex composition, especially the presence of hyaluronic acid, SF is usually viscous and non-homogeneous. The presence of high-molar-mass hyaluronan in this fluid gives it the required viscosity for its function as a lubricant. Viscosity is the greatest major hydraulic attribute of the SF in articular cartilage.MethodsEmpirical modeling of previously published results was performed. In this study, we explored the flow of a non-Newtonian fluid that could be used to model the SF flow. Analyzing the flow in a simple geometry can help explain the model’s efficacy and assess the SF models. By employing some viscosity data reported elsewhere, we summarized the dynamic viscosity values of normal human SF of the knee joints in terms of time after injecting hyaluronidase (HYAL) at 25°C. The suggested quadratic behavior was obtained through extrapolation. For accurate diagnosis or prediction, the comparison between three specific parameters (ai, t0, and ln η0) was made for normal and pathological cases under the same experimental conditions for treatment by addition of HYAL and for investigation of the rheological properties. A new model on the variation of viscosity on the SF of knee joints with time after injection of HYAL with respect to normal and postmortem samples at different velocity gradients was proposed using data previously reported elsewhere.ResultsThe rheological behavior of SF changes progressively over time from non-Newtonian to a Newtonian profile, where the viscosity has a limiting constant value (η0) independent of the gradient velocity at a unique characteristic time (t0 ≈ 8.5 h). The proposed three-parameter model with physical meaning offers insights into future pathological cases. The outcomes of this work are expected to offer new perspectives for diagnosis, criteria, and prediction of pathological case types through comparisons with new parameter values treated under the same experimental conditions as HYAL injection. This study also highlights the importance of HYAL treatment for better intra-assay precision.

Protected areas in South Asia face significant challenges due to human disturbance and deforestation. The ongoing debate surrounds the recent surge in illegal encroachment of forest buffer zones in the Musali divisional secretariat division (DSD), which has led to a significant loss of forest cover over the past three decades. In this context, detecting changes in forest cover, assessing forest health, and evaluating environmental quality are crucial for sustainable forest management. As such, our efforts focused on assessing forest cover dynamics, forest health, and environmental conditions in the DSD from 1988 to 2022. We employed standardized image processing techniques, utilizing Landsat-5 (TM) and Landsat-8 (OLI) images. However, the forest area in the DSD has shown minimal changes, and environmental conditions and forest health have illustrated considerable spatial-temporal variations over the 34 years. The results indicated that 8.5 km2 (1.9%) of forest cover in the DSD has been converted to other land use classes. Overall, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) has declined over time, while Land Surface Temperature (LST) exhibits an increasing trend. The regression results demonstrated a robust inverse relationship between LST and NDVI. The declining vegetation conditions and the increasing LST contribute to an increase in environmental criticality. The derived maps and indices will be beneficial for forest authorities in identifying highly sensitive locations. Additionally, they could enable land use planners to develop sustainable land management strategies.

ObjectiveTo explore the relationship between Oxygenation Index (OI) and Oxygen Saturation Index (OSI) among infants with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH), both within the first 24 h after birth and in extended observations in those who survived until their surgical intervention.MethodsSeven- years retrospective review of CDH cases at a single Level III neonatal intensive care unit. The correlations of various combinations of OI-OSI pairs were assessed using the Spearman's rho Correlation Coefficient. Additionally, during the initial 24 h, the correlations between admission (first), best (lowest), highest, and mean OI and OSI values were determined. The predictive ability of the first 24 h oxygen and oxygen saturation indices for mortality and other adverse outcomes were assessed using the Area Under the Curve (AUC) analysis.ResultsThirty-seven infants with CDH were included in the analysis. A strong correlation was observed between all pairs of OI/OSI (2,289) (Spearman's rho = 0.843), matched pairs of Postductal OI/OSI (1,232 pairs) (Spearman's rho = 0.835) and the unmatched pairs of Postductal OI and Preductal OSI (1,057 pairs) (Spearman's rho = 0.852). Using the regression equations for all pairs, matched and unmatched OI/OSI pairs, we deduced that for clinically pertinent OI thresholds of 10, 15, 20 and 40, the corresponding OSI values were 5, 8, 11, and 23, respectively. Furthermore, in the first 24 h, strong correlations were evident between OI/OSI: at admission (Spearman's rho = 0.783), best OI/OSI (Spearman's rho = 0.848), and highest OI/OSI (Spearman's rho = 0.921). The most robust correlation was observed between the mean OI/OSI with a Spearman's rho of 0.928. First (AUC = 0.849), best (AUC = 0.927), highest (AUC = 0.942) and mean day 1 OI (AUC = 0.946) were all predictive of mortality. Similarly, first (AUC = 1.00), best (AUC = 0.989), highest (AUC = 1.00) and the mean OSI in day 1 (AUC = 0.978) were all predictive of mortality. All of the OIs and OSIs in day 1 except for the admission OSI (AUC = 0.683) were predictive of pulmonary hypertension. Additionally, all of OI and OSI indices in the first 24-hour except for the best day 1 OI (AUC = 0.674) were predictive of the need for rescue HFOV.ConclusionThere were a strong correlation between the OI and OSI in infants with CDH. Oxygenation indices and OSI in the first 24 h were predictive of mortality and other adverse outcomes in infants with CDH.

ObjectivesThe purpose of this research was to evaluate the differences between rectal and axillary temperature measurements in preterm infants who were born less than 32 weeks’ gestation using digital thermometers upon their admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).MethodsProspective, observational, single centre study. Rectal and axillary temperatures measurements were performed using a digital thermometer. The study examined various maternal and neonatal factors to describe the study group, including the use of prenatal corticosteroids, the occurrence of maternal diabetes and hypertension, a history of maternal prolonged rupture of membranes (PROM), maternal chorioamnionitis, the mode of delivery, along with the neonate's gender, birth weight, and gestational age. The Pearson correlation coefficient (R) was calculated to ascertain the linear relationship between the temperatures taken at the rectal and axillary sites. The concordance between the two sets of temperature data was analyzed using the Bland-Altman method.ResultsEighty infants with a mean gestational age of 28.4 weeks (SD = 2.9) and a mean birth weight of 1,229 g (SD = 456) were included in the study. The mean axillary temperature was 36.4 °C (SD = 0.7), which was lower than the mean rectal temperature of 36.6 °C (SD = 0.6) (p = 0.012). Rectal temperatures surpassed axillary measurements in 59% of instances, while the reverse was observed in 21% of cases. Summary: With exercise, muscle and bone produce factors with beneficial effects on brain, fat, and other organs. Exercise in mice increased fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), urine phosphate, and the muscle metabolite L-β-aminoisobutyric acid (L-BAIBA), suggesting that L-BAIBA may play a role in phosphate metabolism. Here, we show that L-BAIBA increases in serum with exercise and elevates Fgf23 in osteocytes. The D enantiomer, described to be elevated with exercise in humans, can also induce Fgf23 but through a delayed, indirect process via sclerostin. The two enantiomers both signal through the same receptor, Mas-related G-protein-coupled receptor type D, but activate distinct signaling pathways; L-BAIBA increases Fgf23 through Gαs/cAMP/PKA/CBP/β-catenin and Gαq/PKC/CREB, whereas D-BAIBA increases Fgf23 indirectly through sclerostin via Gαi/NF-κB. In vivo, both enantiomers increased Fgf23 in bone in parallel with elevated urinary phosphate excretion. Thus, exercise-induced increases in BAIBA and FGF23 work together to maintain phosphate homeostasis.

Detrital and volcanic-detrital rocks from the Ifni Buttonhole and Lakhssas Plateau were analyzed to determine their provenance, compositional maturity, and alteration source. Geochemically, the sediments were classified as arkoses, lithic arenites, grauwackes, sandstones, lithic arenites, and Fe-rich sands, indicating low compositional and mineralogical maturity. A high average SiO2 concentration and low Al2O3 were consistent with a low abundance of shale and clay components. The geochemical signatures of the detrital and volcano-detrital (RDVD) rocks indicate that they have undergone a moderate to low degree of chemical alteration. The CIA study also suggests that the granitic, granodioritic rocks represent the source provenance which, during weathering and transport, supplied the detritus to the supra-crustal units. The major trace element data suggest that these rocks are largely derived from felsic igneous rocks, namely granitoids, with a minor contribution from intermediate sources. The carbonate rocks do not represent a wide variety of facies: dolomitic limestone, calcareous limestone, and calcaro-dolomitic chert. Calcitic and dolomitic samples show a linear increase in SiO2, regardless of their CaO/LOI ratio values, which remain relatively constant. The highest SiO2 contents are observed in the calc-dolomitic chert. Geochemical analysis of RDVD from the Ifni buttonhole determined their origin, maturity, and alteration. Major oxides decreased with higher silica content, indicating quartz control. Samples, formed under semi-arid conditions, show maturity under stable deposition. They suggest a felsic, recycled source, with moderate alteration and zircon enrichment during recycling. In the study area, limestones and dolomites serve as materials applicable in the building sector, suitable for all types of concrete. The Taliwine Formation harbors Lower Cambrian dolomites and limestones, ideal for mosaic aggregates. Described as variable in color, compact, homogeneous, very hard, and resistant to alteration, the plutonic rocks form prominent peaks. They exhibit both subalkaline characteristics in granitoids and an alkaline trend in dolerite dykes. Most samples display minimal alteration, indicating the reliability of their major element compositions for geochemical analyses. These granitoids constitute valuable deposits for ornamental and building rock purposes.

Abstract The Tilt-depth is a popular approach for determining depths of magnetic sources. As this method is based on the distance between contour levels of the tilt angle, it can lead to inaccurate depth estimates when the contour lines are distorted by the presence of noise. In this paper, we stabilize the Tilt-depth method based on the computation of stable vertical derivative obtained by the β-VDR method. The presented method is demonstrated on synthetic magnetic anomalies and real magnetic data from the Arabian Shield. The results obtained from the synthetic examples coincide well with the actual depths. These results proved the utility of the presented method in cases where the field is corrupted by noise. The real example shows that the presented method can provide valuable information on subsurface structures of the area where the Tilt-depth estimates are consistent with the result of the horizontal tilt angle. The findings show that the presented method is less sensitive to noise and can provide source edges and depths more clearly and with higher accuracy.

This study investigates resilient platoon control for constrained intelligent and connected vehicles (ICVs) against F-local Byzantine attacks. We introduce a resilient distributed model-predictive platooning control framework for such ICVs. This framework seamlessly integrates the predesigned optimal control with distributed model predictive control (DMPC) optimization and introduces a unique distributed attack detector to ensure the reliability of the transmitted information among vehicles. Notably, our strategy uses previously broadcasted information and a specialized convex set, termed the “resilience set”, to identify unreliable data. This approach significantly eases graph robustness prerequisites, requiring only an (F + 1)-robust graph, in contrast to the established mean sequence reduced algorithms, which require a minimum (2F + 1)-robust graph. Additionally, we introduce a verification algorithm to restore trust in vehicles under minor attacks, further reducing communication network robustness. Our analysis demonstrates the recursive feasibility of the DMPC optimization. Furthermore, the proposed method achieves exceptional control performance by minimizing the discrepancies between the DMPC control inputs and predesigned platoon control inputs, while ensuring constraint compliance and cybersecurity. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our theoretical findings.

Abstract Background Purple blotch disease is a devastating disease, resulting in significant yield losses in onion. Application of synthetic fungicides is a rapid approach for the control of this disease, but extensive use of synthetic fungicides results in resistance development in pathogen. Thus, it is mandatory to explore alternative approaches to overcome the fungicide resistance challenges. The present study focused on a sustainable biocontrolling approach by using biocontrol yeast. The objective was to develop a management strategy that offers an environmentally acceptable alternative to commonly used fungicides. Results A total of six pathogenic isolates were obtained from the infected onion leaves, out of all tested isolates, OP-4 recorded as highly virulent with disease incidence (75.2%). Filobasidium wieringae and Pichia kluyveri drastically reduced the in vitro mycelial growth of Alternaria porri (14 and 21 mm, respectively). In the greenhouse experiment, plant inoculated with P. kluyveri suspension was the most effective, resulting in considerable reduction (77.1%) in disease severity, before two days of pathogen inoculation. However, F. wieringae showed a considerable reduction (84.5%) in disease severity when applied in combination with P. kluyveri two days post-inoculation. Conclusions These findings highlighted the strong biocontrol potential of P. kluyveri and F. wieringae in managing the purple blotch disease of onion and can reduce the reliance on synthetic fungicides. Further research and field trials should be conducted to optimize the application methods and evaluate the long-term effectiveness of these bioagents.

Nanomaterials have become integral in various aspects of agricultural practices, including the development of nano-fertilizers for optimized crop nutrition. This study explores the application of green-synthesized iron (Fe) and molybdenum (Mo) nanoparticles, as well as their composites, using a guava leaf extract (GLE). The focus is on assessing their impact on nitrogen fixation and growth in tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum). The nanoparticles were characterized through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet Diffused Reflectance Spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The experiment involved two application methods (soil and direct plant spraying) with varying nanoparticle concentrations. Results indicate that the 1% composite nanoparticles applied to the soil and 3% Mo directly on plants yield the most favorable growth and nitrogen uptake in S. lycopersicum. Notably, the 1% composite treatment demonstrated significant enhancement in shoot length, number of branches, and shoot diameter at all three growth stages. Conversely, the 3% Mo treatment when applied directly to plants exhibited optimal results showing substantial shoot length, number of branches, and shoot diameter. Post-experimental soil nutrient analysis further revealed the nuanced effects of nanoparticle applications with 1% composite treatments enhancing nutrient availability compared to control and other concentrations. This research contributes to the evolving field of agri-nanotechnology emphasizing the importance of nanoparticle concentration and application method in influencing plant development and nutrient uptake, paving the way for sustainable agricultural practices.

This is the first time that radiological assessment achieved in the Baghdad International Airport (BIA) in Iraq. Twenty-three sites were sampled from upper 5 cm of the surface soil within the BIA to be analyzed for the radioactivity of natural radionuclides Ra-226, Th-232 and K-40 and the artificial radionuclide, Cs-137 using gamma spectroscopy based on Hyper pure Germanium detector (HPGe). Ten samples out of the 23 samples were analyzed for U-238, U-235 using the Neutron Activation Analysis method. To determine the percentage of DU [DU (%)] which is calculated from the 235U/238U isotope ratio. The study showed that there is a possibility of slight contamination with depleted uranium in two sites out of the 23 sites that were examined. The average activities of Ra-226, Th-232, and K-40 in the study area are within the limits of world averages, while there are evidences that new feeding of Cs-137 in the region, reaches about 19 Bq/kg, from the new global fallout after Chernobyl accident. The measured and calculated absorbed doses in the study area were within international limits and no need for farther monitoring. Annual effective dose equivalent due to resuspension of Ra-226 is estimated to be 1.0E-10Sv, and this value is negligible compared with 1 mSv permissible value for public recommended by ICRP.

Background: Radiography appears to be a promising way of investigating jaw lesions. Multi-detector CT (MDCT) scan, due to its sensitivity and diagnostic performance, is widely performed for different types of maxilla and mandible swellings. Objectives: To evaluate the role of multislice CT in diagnosis of jaw swelling using different software programs available. Objectives: To assess the task of multislice CT diagnosis in jaw lesions with various software programs. Patients and methods: A prospective cohort study included 50 patients with jaw swelling had been examined by multislice CT Radio-diagnosis Department, Sohag University. Results: There were non-statistical significant differences between MDCT and biopsy as regard diagnosis of mandibular swelling, 82% of diagnosis by MDCT had the same diagnosis by biopsy Conclusion: MDCT has a key role in giving an appropriate diagnosis, rating it and then directing care decisions being far superior to traditional radiography of mandible

This paper focuses on enhancing the resilience of Power Park Modules (PPMs), connected to the grid via power electronic units, under asymmetrical voltage sag conditions. We particularly address three interconnected constraints crucial for Low-Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) capability of PPMs: grid voltage support, overcurrent protection, and the DC-link voltage quality. Existing literature often overlooks the holistic consideration of these factors, prompting this study to introduce and compare three flexible LVRT strategies compliant with recent German grid codes. The proposed strategies use distinct approaches to reinforce the LVRT capability of the PPMs. Strategy A employs static gain factors to control positive- and negative-sequence reactive current (PSRC and NSRC) and the negative sequence of the active current (NSAC). Strategy B aims to enhance the DC-link voltage quality by eliminating real power oscillations through the flexible choice of NSAC and gain factors controlling PSRC and NSRC. Strategy C enhances DC-bus voltage quality by eliminating NSAC and employing flexible equal gain factors for PSRC and NSRC, mitigating both real and imaginary power oscillations. Testing on an inverter-based PPM, involving 400 kW PV module and 200 A, storage system, reveals the superior performance of strategy C. Additional tests evaluate Strategy C’s performance with var/voltage regulation equipment (On-Load-Tap-Changing transformer), demonstrating stable and promising performance. Through the introduced approaches, the authors believe that this research work is useful for developing future grid codes and improving the safety and reliability of grid-connected power systems.

In the field of electrical machines maintenance, accurate and timely diagnosis plays a crucial role in ensuring reliability and efficiency. Variational autoencoder (VAE) techniques have emerged as a promising tool for fault classification due to their robustness in handling complex data. However, the inherent nondeterministic aspect of the VAE creates a significant challenge as it leads to varying cluster locations for identical health states across different machines. This variability complicates the creation of a standardized applicable diagnostic tool and challenges for the implementation of effective real-time health monitoring and prognostics. Addressing this issue, a novel approach is proposed wherein a desirability function-based term is integrated into the cost function of the VAE. The enhancement achieved by this approach arises from the standardization of classification, guaranteeing that analogous faults are assigned to identical geolocations within a 2-D user-friendly space. This method's efficacy is validated through two separate case studies: one analyzing vibration data from two diverse designs of large existing hydrogenerators, and the other utilizing vibration data sourced from an open-access dataset focused on bearing fault. The findings of both studies show that the model can cluster 97% of similar faults into preset zones, compared with 40% when the desirability term is excluded.

In this study, the stable isotop 18O and 2H has been used to investigate the interaction of surface water (SW), and groundwater (GW) in Al-Taji district/ Northern Baghdad for two seasons (March and August 2022). 16 Samples were collected from water resources in the Al-Taji district (Tigris channel, Tigris River, and groundwater), in each season water samples from 8 Tigris channel, 5 drilled wells, and 3 Tigris River were taken for the analysis of the isotopes 18O and 2H. The average analysis results of 18O and 2H in the Tigris channel, Tigris River, and groundwater were found to be -3.435‰ and -18.6094‰, -2.07167‰ and -17.81‰, -4.125‰ and -34.707‰ respectively. The results, generally, show a comparable range of isotope content on the Tigris Channel and groundwater (W1 about 1 km from the Tigris Channel). This indicates a mixing/interconnection between groundwater and the Tigris River, and it could be concluded that the wells (W1 and Ch1 and Ch2) near the Tigris channel have been recharged or mixed from them.

Abstract Exploration of groundwater is an integral part of viable resource growth for society, economy, and irrigation. However, uncontrolled utilization is mainly reported in urban and industries due to the increasing demand for water in semi-arid and arid regions of the world. In the background, groundwater demarcation for potential areas is vital in meeting necessary demand. The current study applied an integrated method comprising the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), multiple influence factors (MIF), combined with a linear regression curve and observatory well data for groundwater prospects mapping. Thematic maps such as flow direction, flow accumulation, elevation map, land use land cover, slope, soil texture, hill shade, geomorphology, normalized vegetation index, and groundwater depth map were generated utilizing remote sensing techniques. The relative weight of each parameter was estimated and then assigned to major and minor parameters. Potential zones for groundwater were classified into five classes, namely very good, good, moderate, poor, and very poor, based on AHP and MIF methods. A spatially explicit sensitivity and uncertainty analysis method to a GIS-based multi-criteria groundwater potential zone model is presented in this research. The study addressed a flaw in the way groundwater potential mapping results are typically presented in GIS-based multi-criteria decision analysis studies, where discrete class outputs are used without any assessment of their certainty with respect to variations in criteria weighting, which is one of the main contributors to output uncertainty. The study region is categorized based on inferred results as very poor, poor, marginal, and very good in potential ground quality 3.04 km2 is considered extremely poor, 3.33 km2 is considered poor, 64.42 km2 is considered very good, and 85.84 km2 is considered marginal zones, which shows reliable and potential implementation. The outcomes of AHP and MIF were validated by linear regression curve and actual water table in a study area. The study results help to formulate the potential demarcation of groundwater zones for future sustainable planning and development of groundwater sources. This study may be helpful to provide a cost-effective solution to water resources crises. The current study finding may be helpful for decision-makers and administrative professionals for sustainable management of groundwater resources for present and future demands.

Background There are many methods of evaluating diaphragmatic function, including trans-diaphragmatic pressure measurements, which are considered the key rule of diagnosis. We studied the clinical usefulness of chest ultrasonography in evaluating stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and those in exacerbation, focusing on diaphragmatic measurements and their correlation with spirometry and other clinical parameters. Methods In a prospective case-control study, we enrolled 100 COPD patients divided into 40 stable COPD patients and 60 patients with exacerbation. The analysis included 20 age-matched controls. In addition to the clinical assessment of the study population, radiological evaluation included chest radiographs and chest computed tomography. Transthoracic ultrasonography (TUS) was performed for all included subjects. Results Multiple A lines (more than 3) were more frequent in COPD exacerbation than in stable patients, as was the case for B-lines. TUS significantly showed high specificity, negative predictive value, positive predictive value, and accuracy in detecting pleural effusion, consolidation, pneumothorax, and lung mass. Diaphragmatic measurements were significantly lower among stable COPD subjects than healthy controls. Diaphragmatic thickness and excursion displayed a significant negative correlation with body mass index and the dyspnea scale, and a positive correlation with spirometry measures. Patients in Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) group D showed lower diaphragmatic measurements (thickness and excursion). Conclusion The TUS of COPD patients both in stable and exacerbated conditions and the assessment of diaphragm excursion and thickness by TUS in COPD patients and their correlations to disease-related factors proved informative and paved the way for the better management of COPD patients.

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

ABSTRACTPatients on dialysis (PoD) are at high risk of severe morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. Characterizing long-term vaccine immune responses in these patients will help optimize vaccine schedule for PoD. This study aimed to determine whether long-term humoral and B and T cell-responses post 3rd and 4th dose of the BNT162b2 vaccine differed between PoD and controls. Non-infected PoD and controls vaccinated with BNT162b2 were recruited in Ziv Medical Center, Israel, between 2021 and 2022. Specimens were collected 1–2 months pre 3rd dose; 1–3 months post 3rd dose; 4–5 months post 3rd dose and 3–5 months post the 4th dose. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike (spike) specific antibodies, spike specific memory B cells, and spike specific CD154+ T cells as well as cytokines producing CD4+/CD8+ T cells were measured using standardized assays and compared between PoD and controls at each time point using Mann Whitney and Fisher’s exact tests. We recruited 22 PoD and 20 controls. Antibody levels in PoD were lower compared to controls pre 3rd dose but not post 3rd and 4th doses. Frequencies of spike specific memory B cell populations were similar between PoD and controls overall. Frequencies of spike specific T cells, including those producing IFNγ and TNFα, were not lower in PoD. B and T cell mediated immune response in PoD following a 3rd and a 4th dose of the BNT162b2 vaccine was not inferior to controls up to 5 months post vaccination. Our results suggest that standard BNT162b2 vaccination is suitable for this group.

Objective . To describe heated humidified high-flow nasal cannulas (HHHFNC) utilization in level III neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in Saudi Arabia. Methods . A prospective cross-sectional study using an electronic web-based questionnaire. The survey targeted level III NICUs hospitals using HHHFNCs, covering HHHFNC availability, protocols, patient characteristics, and indications. It also collected opinions on the benefits of HHHFNCs compared to nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP). Results . Out of 47 government-level III neonatal intensive care units, 35 (74%) responded to the survey. Among the included units, 46% had guidelines for HHHFNC use. Additionally, 51% reported using HHHFNC in infants of all gestational ages. The primary indication for HHHFNC use was weaning off nCPAP (34%), with 60% of the respondents noting its advantages for kangaroo care and breastfeeding. Conclusion . HHHFNC are increasingly prevalent in NICUs in Saudi Arabia. However, there remain no clear policies or guidelines regarding their use in preterm infants.

The concept of ecotourism has experienced a significant surge in popularity over the past two decades, primarily driven by the multitude of adverse impacts associated with mass tourism. The objective of the study was to develop a comprehensive ecotourism suitability index to guide policymakers in implementing tourism development policies. Given the considerable appeal of the study area to both local and international tourists, it is essential to conduct a systematic evaluation to pinpoint suitable areas for ecotourism development. This necessity arises from the study area's placement within a fragile ecosystem and its proximity to a UNESCO World Heritage site. We employed a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) integrated environment coupled with a fuzzy Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) methodology. The GIS-MCDA integrated framework leverages the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and a weighted linear combination that seeks to amalgamate many features and criteria to assess ecotourism potential by integrating 20 criteria into six separate categories: landscape, topography, accessibility, climate, forest and wildlife, and negative factors. Weights were allocated to each criterion and factor based on the expert's opinions of their impact on the development of ecotourism. The final ecotourism suitability index comprised five unique classes: very high, high, moderate, less, and not suitable. Results reveal that out of the total areas, 45.4 % (259 km2) are within the high and very high suitable classes. The sensitivity analysis suggested that ecotourism potentials are more favorable to forest and accessibility variables. The generated index can be utilized as a road map since validation verified a 64 % accuracy. Given the dearth of earlier research, this study provides vital support for the development of sustainable ecotourism projects in the study area.
