This study aimed to investigate altered static and dynamic functional network connectivity (FNC) and its correlation with clinical symptoms in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). One hundred and fifty-nine patients with KOA and 73 age- and gender-matched healthy subjects (HS) underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and clinical evaluations. Group independent component analysis (GICA) was applied, and seven resting-state networks were identified. Patients with KOA had decreased static FNC within the default mode network (DM), visual network (VS), and cerebellar network (CB) and increased static FNC between the subcortical network (SC) and VS (p < 0.05, FDR corrected). Four reoccurring FNC states were identified using k-means clustering analysis. Although abnormalities in dynamic FNCs of KOA patients have been found using the common window size (22 TR, 44 s), but the results of the clustering analysis were inconsistent when using different window sizes, suggesting dynamic FNCs might be an unstable method to compare brain function between KOA patients and HS. These recent findings illustrate that patients with KOA have a wide range of abnormalities in the static and dynamic FNCs, which provided a reference for the identification of potential central nervous therapeutic targets for KOA treatment and might shed light on the other musculoskeletal pain neuroimaging studies.

A wideband superdirective array, composed of a two-element circular monopole configuration, is introduced. The monopoles are placed in close proximity, facing each other on a metal ground. To ensure good matching at high frequencies, two pairs of elliptical patches are added to the sides of the monopoles, enhancing the surface current of the circular patch for wideband performance. To achieve equal amplitude excitation and the desired phase difference, a wideband power divider with a phase shifter is designed to feed the antenna array. Simulation and measurement results demonstrate that the proposed wideband antenna array, operating within the frequency range of 2.94–7.93 GHz, exhibits a maximum directivity of 8.36–10 dBi, with an antenna efficiency ranging from 47.86 to 83.18% across the bandwidth. The proposed array has the advantages of miniaturization, high directivity and wideband operation and can be widely used in various portable wireless communication systems, including WLAN (5.05–5.9 GHz), ISM (5.725–5.875 GHz), 5G communication (3.3–3.8 GHz), etc.

In this paper, an oblique aperture ridge waveguide operating at 2450 MHz is proposed, and, using the ridge waveguide, a permittivity measurement system is constructed which can measure the permittivity of materials during microwave heating. The system calculates the amplitudes of the scattering parameters by using the forward, reflected and transmitted powers of the power meters, and it reconstructs the permittivity of the material by combining the scattering parameters with an artificial neural network. The system is used to measure the complex permittivity of mixed solutions of methanol and ethanol with different ratios at room temperature, and the permittivity of methanol and ethanol with increasing temperature, from room temperature to 50 °C. The measured results are in good agreement with the reference data. The system allows simultaneous measurement of the permittivity with microwave heating and provides real-time, rapid changes in the permittivity during heating, avoiding thermal runaway and providing a reference for applications of microwave energy in the chemical industry.

Microwave-assisted chemical reactions have been widely used, but the overheating effect limits further applications. The aim of this paper is to investigate the coupling degree of the electromagnetic field and thermal field in microwave-heating chemical reactions whose polarization changes as the reactions proceed. First, the entropy-balance equation of microwave-heating polar-molecule reactions is obtained. Then, the coupling degree of the electromagnetic field and the thermal field in microwave-heating polar-molecule reactions is derived, according to the entropy-balance equation. Finally, the effects of reaction processes on the degree of coupling are discussed. When the time scale of the component-concentration variation is much greater than the wave period during the chemical processes, the degree of coupling is sufficiently small, and the electric and thermal fields are considered as weakly coupled. On the other hand, the degree of coupling may change during the reactions. If the absolute value of the coupling degree becomes larger, due to the change in component concentration, this will lead to a transition from weak coupling to strong coupling.

This paper investigated the influence of gas humidity (1%, 3%, 8%, 10%, and 12%) on the characteristics of a microwave-induced atmospheric plasma jet. The plasma discharge was generated by a microwave solid-state source with a H2O–Ar mixture gas flow of 8.1 L/min. The variation in energy efficiency, O and OH concentrations, rotational temperature of heavy species, shapes of plasma plumes with different humidities, and microwave input powers were recorded and analyzed. The results showed that the concentrations of O and OH increase monotonously with gas humidity at higher input powers while they fluctuate with gas humidity at lower input powers. With an increase in the H2O/Ar ratio from 1% to 12%, the energy efficiency of the plasma generator decreases, and the plasma plumes become shorter and thinner. The rotational temperature of plasma at the nozzle also showed positive correlation with increasing humidity. Adding more input power would make all the values of these parameters increase. This paper is supposed to be helpful for the research of the interaction mechanism of mix gas plasma and microwave power and for improving the effect of plasma treating biomedical materials.

Abstract The ternary transitional metal oxide NiCo2O4 is a promising anode material for sodium ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity and superior electrical conductivity. However, its sodium storage capability is severely limited by the sluggish sodiation/desodiation reaction kinetics. Herein, NiCo2O4 double-shelled hollow spheres were synthesized via a microwave-assisted, fast solvothermal synthetic procedure in a mixture of isopropanol and glycerol, followed by annealing. Isopropanol played a vital role in the precipitation of nickel and cobalt, and the shrinkage of the glycerol quasi-emulsion under heat treatment was responsible for the formation of the double-shelled nanostructure. The as-synthesized product was tested as an anode material in a sodium ion battery, was found to exhibit a high reversible specific capacity of 511 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, and deliver high capacity retention after 100 cycles.

Abstract Dynamic control transmission and polarization properties of electromagnetic (EM) wave propagation is investigated using chemical reconfigurable all-dielectric metasurface. The metasurface is composed of cross-shaped periodical teflon tubes and inner filled chemical systems (i.e., mixtures and chemical reaction) in aqueous solution. By tuning the complex permittivity of chemical systems, the reconfigurable metasurface can be easily achieved. The transmission properties of different incident polarized waves (i.e., linear and circular polarization) were simulated and experimentally measured for static ethanol solution as volume ratio changed. Both results indicated this metasurface can serve as either tunable FSS (Frequency Selective Surface) or tunable linear-to-circular/cross Polarization Converter at required frequency range. Based on the reconfigurable laws obtained from static solutions, we developed a dynamic dielectric system and researched a typical chemical reaction with time-varying permittivity filled in the tubes experimentally. It provides new ways for realizing automatic reconfiguration of metasurface by chemical reaction system with given variation laws of permittivity.

Security of cyber-physical systems against cyber attacks is an important yet challenging problem. Cyber-physical systems are prone to information leakage from the physical domain. The analog emissions, such as magnetic and power, can turn into side channel revealing valuable data, even the crypto key of the system. Template attack is a popular type of side-channel analysis using machine learning technology. Malicious attackers can use template attack to profile the analog emission, then recover the secret key of the system. But conventional template attack requires that the adversary has access to an identical experiment device that he can program to his choice. This study proposes a novel side-channel analysis for physical-domain security in cyber-physical systems. Our contributions are the following three points: (1) Major peak region method for finding points of interests correctly is proposed. (2) A method for establishing templates on the basis of those points of interest still without requiring knowledge of the key is proposed. Several techniques are proposed to improve the quality of the templates as well. (3) A method for choosing attacking traces is proposed to significantly improve the attacking efficiency. Our experiments on three devices show that the proposed method is significantly more effective than conventional template attack. By doing so, we will highlight the importance of performing similar analysis during design time to secure the cyber-physical system.

Efficient reduction of graphene oxide to obtain high-quality graphene nanosheets is desirable for energy storage, catalysis, electronics and environmental remediation. In this brief review, we mainly focus on the microwave-assisted production of reduced graphene oxide in three categories: (1) microwave-assisted chemical reduction of graphene oxide; (2) microwave-assisted thermal reduction of graphene oxide; (3) microwave-assisted simultaneous thermal exfoliation & thermal reduction of graphite oxide. We also summarize common techniques for characterizing reduction efficiency and quality of as-obtained rGO.

A high-temperature superconductor (HTS) microstrip antenna array with right-hand circular polarization is proposed for space communications. The proposed HTS antenna array can achieve high efficiency, which is able to reduce the antenna’s loss. The array consists of 16 antenna elements being fed by a T-network. A pair of symmetric meander slots is used in each antenna element to broaden the input matching bandwidth. A controllable cryostat is used as the refrigeration for HTS. The experiment shows that the gain of the proposed HTS antenna is 8.39 dB, whose 10 dB return loss bandwidth is 2.2% ranging from 5.75 GHz to 5.87 GHz. In comparison with a traditional conductor antenna array having the same configuration, the proposed array has an 8.1 dB improvement in the gain and a 69.2% enhancement in the radiation efficiency.

A novel design of 1×2 and 2×2 circularly polarized (CP) microstrip patch antenna arrays is presented in this paper. The two CP antenna arrays are fed by sequentially rotated coplanar waveguide (CPW) to slotline networks and are processed on 1 mm thick single-layer FR4 substrates. Both of the two arrays are low-profile and lightweight. An air-bridge free CPW-slotline power splitter is appropriately designed to form the feeding networks and realize the two CP antenna arrays. The mechanism of circular polarization in this design is explained. The simulated and measured impedance bandwidths as well as the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidths and the radiation patterns of the two proposed antenna arrays are presented. This proposed design can be easily extended to form a larger plane array with good performance owing to its simple structure.

Microwave-assisted sintering materials have been proven to deliver improvements in the mechanical and physicochemical properties of the materials, compared with conventional sintering methods. Accurate values of dielectric properties of materials under high temperatures are essential for microwave-assisted sintering. In view of this, this paper, proposes an on-line system to measure the high temperature dielectric properties of materials under microwave processing at a frequency of 2450 MHz. A custom-designed ridge waveguide is utilized, where samples are heated and measured simultaneously. An artificial neural network (ANN) trained with the corresponding simulation data is integrated into this system to reverse the permittivity of the measured materials. This whole system is tested at room temperature with different materials. Accuracies of measuring dielectric property with an error lower than 9% with respect to theoretical data have been achieved even for high loss media. The functionality of the dielectric measurement system has also been demonstrated by heating and measuring Macor and Duran ceramic glass samples up to 800 °C. All the preliminary experiments prove the feasibility of this system. It provides another method for dielectric property measurement and improves the understanding of the mechanism between microwave and media under high temperatures, which is helpful for optimizing the microwave-assisted sintering of materials.

The microstrip reflectarray antenna is an attractive directional antenna combining advantages of both the reflector and the microstrip array antenna. For the design of this kind of antenna, the conventional method, which is based on the reflection phase curve, may not be effective because of the approximations made in the design procedure. The common optimization method that employs an optimization algorithm in conjunction with the full-wave simulation to optimize the antennas’ structural parameters is able to achieve better performances in comparison with the conventional method; but it is impractical for large-scale microstrip reflectarray antennas due to too many structural parameters from variable reflection elements. To tackle the design problem of the microstrip reflectarray antenna, a new method is proposed for the first time. It optimizes the reflection phase curve rather than the structural parameters and then utilizes the optimized reflection phase curve to design the antenna. A microstrip reflectarray antenna working at 5.8 GHz and with a fixed size of 300 mm × 300 mm is designed for high gain as a sample design. The results show that the proposed method has greatly improved the antenna’s gain over 2.2 dB (from 19.7 dBi to 21.9 dBi) in comparison with the conventional design method, and it only needs to optimize 6 structural parameters, in contrast to 22 for the common optimization method.

This paper presents a novel compact design of a low cost fully printable slot-loaded bowtie chipless RFID tag. The tag consists of two trapezoidal metallic patches loaded with multiple slot resonators. Slots with similar size or adjacent frequencies are loaded alternately on two bow-tie patches to double the number of data bits within the UWB frequency band without increasing the mutual coupling between slots. A coding capacity of 12 bits is obtained with 12 slots within a reasonable size of 35 mm × 33 mm. RCS of the tag has been given by simulation. Measurements have been done using a bistatic radar configuration in the frequency domain and transmission coefficient is measured. The agreement between the simulation and measurement validates this new concept of design. This tag has high data capacity and low cost and can be directly printed on product such as personal ID, credit cards, paper, and textile because it needs only one conductive layer.

Microwaves have been widely used in the treatment of different materials. However, the existing adjustable power thermostatic reactors cannot be used to analyze materials characteristics under microwave effects. In this paper, a microwave thermostatic chemical reactor for processing liquid materials is proposed, by controlling the velocity of coolant based on PLC (programmable logic controller) in different liquid under different constant electric field intensity. A nonpolar coolant (Polydimethylsiloxane), which is completely microwave transparent, is employed to cool the liquid materials. Experiments are performed to measure the liquid temperature using optical fibers, the results show that the precision of temperature control is at the range of ±0.5 °C. Compared with the adjustable power thermostatic control system, the effect of electric field changes on material properties are avoided and it also can be used to detect the properties of liquid materials and special microwave effects.

A number of studies have achieved the consensus that microwave thermal technology can regenerate the granular activated carbon (GAC) more efficiently and energy-conservatively than other technologies. In particular, in the microwave heating industry, permittivity is a crucial parameter. This paper developed two equivalent models to establish the relationship between effective complex permittivity and pore volume of the GAC. It is generally based on Maxwell-Garnett approximation (MGA) theory. With two different assumptions in the model, two quantificational expressions were derived, respectively. Permittivity measurements and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) testing had been introduced in the experiments. Results confirmed the two expressions, which were extremely similar. Theoretical and experimental graphs were matched. This paper set up a bridge which links effective complex permittivity and pore volume of the GAC. Furthermore, it provides a potential and convenient method for the rapid assisted characterization of the GAC in its adsorption performance.

Microwaves have been widely used in the treatment of materials, such as heating, drying, and sterilization. However, the heating in the commonly used microwave applicators is usually uneven. In this paper, a novel multi-material turntable structure is creatively proposed to improve the temperature uniformity in microwave ovens. Three customized turntables consisting of polyethylene (PE) and alumina, PE and aluminum, and alumina and aluminum are, respectively, utilized in a domestic microwave oven in simulation. During the heating process, the processed material is placed on a fixed Teflon bracket which covers the constantly rotating turntable. Experiments are conducted to measure the surface and point temperatures using an infrared thermal imaging camera and optical fibers. Simulated results are compared qualitatively with the measured ones, which verifies the simulated models. Compared with the turntables consisting of a single material, a 26%–47% increase in temperature uniformity from adapting the multi-material turntable can be observed for the microwave-processed materials.

A novel microstrip antenna array, which utilizes Giuseppe Peano fractal shaped patches as its radiation elements and adopts a two-layer stacked structure for achieving both wideband and high-gain properties, is proposed. Parametric study estimates that the proposed antenna’s size can be arbitrarily adjusted by changing the fractal proportion while high aperture efficiency is maintained. Two prototypes with 2 × 2 and 4 × 4 fractal patches, respectively, on each layer are designed, fabricated, and measured. Both simulation and measurement results demonstrate that the proposed antenna possesses encouraging performances of wideband, high directivity, and high aperture efficiency simultaneously; for example, for the two prototypes, their S11

Microwave processing of materials has been found to deliver enormous advantages over conventional processing methods in terms of mechanical and physical properties of the materials. However, the non-uniform temperature distribution is the key problem of microwave processing, which is related to the structure of the cavity, and the placement and physical parameters of the material. In this paper, a new microwave cavity structure with a sliding short based on phase-shifting heating is creatively proposed to improve the temperature uniformity. An electronic mathematical model based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) is built to predict the temperature distribution. Meanwhile, a new computational approach based on the theory of transformation optics is first provided to solve the problem of the moving boundary in the model simulation. At first, the experiment is carried out to validate the model, and heating results from the experiment show good agreement with the model’s prediction. Based on the verified model, materials selected among a wide range of dielectric constants are treated by stationary heating and phase-shifting heating. The coefficient of variation (COV) of the temperature and temperature difference has been compared in detail between stationary heating and phase-shifting heating. A significant improvement in heating uniformity can be seen from the temperature distribution for most of the materials. Furthermore, three other materials are also treated at high temperature and the heating uniformity is also improved. Briefly, the strategy of phase-shifting heating plays a significant role in solve the problem of non-uniform heating in microwave-based material processing. A 25%–58% increase in uniformity from adapting the phase-shifting method can be observed for the microwave-processed materials.
