The simultaneous co-existence and gate-tuneability of the superconducting (SC), magnetic and topological orders in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) open up entirely new possibilities for the creation of complex hybrid Josephson junctions (JJ). Here we report on the creation of gate-defined, symmetry broken Josephson junctions in MATBG, where the weak link is gate-tuned close to the correlated state at a moiré filling factor of 𝛖 = -2. A highly unconventional Fraunhofer pattern emerges, in which supercurrent is carried by edge states, it is phase-shifted and asymmetric with respect to the current and magnetic field directions, and shows a pronounced magnetic hysteresis. Interestingly, our theoretical calculations of the JJ with a valley polarized υ = -2 with orbital magnetization as the weak link explain most of these unconventional features without fine tuning the parameters. While these unconventional Josephson effects persist up to the critical temperature Tc ~ 3.5 K of the superconducting state, at temperatures below T < 800 mK, we observed a pronounced magnetic hysteresis. We demonstrate how the combination of magnetization and its current induced magnetization switching in the MATBG JJ allows us to realize a programmable zero field superconducting diode, which represents a major building block for a new generation of superconducting quantum electronics.

Moiré superlattices in van der Waals heterostructures provide a tunable platform to study emergent properties that are absent in the natural crystal form. Twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TB-TMDs) can host moiré flat bands over a wide range of twist angles. For twist angle close to 60°, it was predicted that TB-TMDs undergo a lattice reconstruction which causes the formation of ultra-flat bands. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we show the emergence of multiple ultra-flat bands in twisted bilayer WSe2 when the twist angle is within 3° of 60°. The ultra-flat bands are manifested as narrow tunneling conductance peaks with estimated bandwidth less than 10 meV, which is only a fraction of the estimated on-site Coulomb repulsion energy. The number of these ultra-flat bands and spatial distribution of the wavefunctions match well with the theoretical predictions, strongly evidencing that the observed ultra-flat bands are induced by lattice reconstruction. Our work provides a foundation for further study of the exotic correlated phases in TB-TMDs., It was predicted that lattice reconstruction can lead to the emergence of multiple ultra-flat electronic bands in twisted bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, the authors demonstrate such bands in twisted bilayer WSe2.

The recently discovered nonlinear Hall effect (NHE) in a few non-interacting systems provides a novel mechanism for generating second-harmonic electrical Hall signals under time-reversal-symmetric conditions. Here, we introduce a new approach to engineering an NHE by using twisted moiré structures. We found that the twisted WSe2 bilayer exhibited an NHE when the Fermi level was tuned to the moiré flat bands. When the first moiré band was half-filled, the nonlinear Hall signal exhibited a sharp peak with a generation efficiency that was at least two orders of magnitude greater than those obtained in previous experiments. We discuss the possible origins of the diverging generation efficiency in twisted WSe2 based on resistivity measurements, such as moiré-interface-induced correlation effects and mass-diverging-type continuous Mott transition. This study demonstrates not only how interaction effects can combine with Berry curvature dipoles to produce novel quantum phenomena, but also the potential of NHE measurements as a new tool for studying quantum criticality.

In a recent work, signatures of a pair of Majorana bound states (MBS) were found in a new experimental platform formed by EuS islands deposited on top of a gold surface which was made superconducting through proximity coupling to a superconductor. In this work, we provide a theoretical understanding for how MBS can be formed in EuS/Au/superconductor heterostructures. We focus on the strip geometry where a narrow ferromagnetic strip is deposited on a planar structure. We first explicitly map out the topological phase diagram of the EuS/Au/superconductor heterostructure using the lattice Green's function method. Importantly, we find that the chemical potential step between the region with and without EuS covering is a crucial ingredient for the creation of MBS of this set-up. Next, we focus on the Bogoliugov quasi-particles that are bound to the region under the EuS by Andreev reflections from the surrounding superconductors. Moreover, we obtain the topological regimes analytically using the scattering matrix method. Notably, we confirm that the normal reflections induced by the chemical potential step are essential for creating finite topological regimes. Furthermore, the area of the topological regimes shows periodic oscillation as a function of chemical potential as well as the sample width., 13 pages, 6 figures. Comments are welcome

Kramers Weyl semimetals are Weyl semimetals that have Weyl points pinned at the time reversal invariant momenta. Recently it has been discovered that all chiral crystals host Weyl points at time reversal invariant momenta, so metals with chiral lattice symmetry all belong to the category of Kramers Weyl semimetals. In this work, we show that due to the chiral lattice symmetry, Kramers Weyl semimetals have the unique longitudinal magnetoelectric effect in which the charge current induced spin and orbital magnetization is parallel to the direction of the current. This feature allows Kramers Weyl semimetals to act as nanoscale quantum solenoids with both orbital and spin magnetization. As the moving electrons of Kramers Weyl semimetal can generate longitudinal magnetization, Kramers Weyl semimetals can be used for new designs of spin-orbit torque devices with all electric control of magnetization switching for magnets with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy., 8 pages, 5 figures, supplementary materials included. Recent experiments reported gate-induced superconductivity in the monolayer 1T$'$-WTe$_2$ which is a two-dimensional topological insulator in its normal state [1, 2]. The in-plane upper critical field $B_{c2}$ is found to exceed the conventional Pauli paramagnetic limit $B_p$ by 1-3 times. The enhancement cannot be explained by conventional spin-orbit coupling which vanishes due to inversion symmetry. In this work, we unveil some distinctive superconducting properties of centrosymmetric 1T$'$-WTe$_2$ which arise from the coupling of spin, momentum and band parity degrees of freedom. As a result of this spin-orbit-parity coupling: (i) there is a first-order superconductor-metal transition at $B_{c2}$ much higher than the Pauli paramagnetic limit $B_p$, (ii) spin-susceptibility is anisotropic with respect to in-plane directions and results in anisotropic $B_{c2}$ and (iii) the $B_{c2}$ exhibits a strong gate dependence as the spin-orbit-parity coupling is significant only near the topological band crossing points. The importance of SOPC on the topologically nontrivial inter-orbital pairing phase is also discussed. Majorana zero modes (MZMs) are expected to emerge in material heterostructures combining superconductivity, ferromagnetism, and spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Particularly, inducing superconductivity and magnetic exchange interactions in well-defined Shockley surface states (SS) of high quality ultrathin Au(111) layers, which intrinsically have strong SOC, has been predicted as an excellent platform for MBS. In this talk, I will first present our success in creating such heterostructure in epitaxially grown Au(111) heterostructures. By means of electron tunneling spectroscopy, I will show signatures of superconductivity induced in the two-dimensional SS of Au(111) thin film, as well as the behavior of such superconducting state under a planar Zeeman field. Second, I will show the evidence of a pair of MZMs in a fabricated Au(111) nanowire system. I will also demonstrate the scalability of such system and why it will enable future MZMs braiding circuit.

Recently, it was pointed out that all chiral crystals with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can be Kramers Weyl semimetals (KWSs) which possess Weyl points pinned at time-reversal invariant momenta. In this work, we show that all achiral non-centrosymmetric materials with SOC can be a new class of topological materials, which we term Kramers nodal line metals (KNLMs). In KNLMs, there are doubly degenerate lines, which we call Kramers nodal lines (KNLs), connecting time-reversal invariant momenta. The KNLs create two types of Fermi surfaces, namely, the spindle torus type and the octdong type. Interestingly, all the electrons on octdong Fermi surfaces are described by two-dimensional massless Dirac Hamiltonians. These materials support quantized optical conductance in thin films. We further show that KNLMs can be regarded as parent states of KWSs. Therefore, we conclude that all non-centrosymmetric metals with SOC are topological, as they can be either KWSs or KNLMs., 12 pages, 4 figures, plus Supplementary Information. Comments are welcome

The magnetoelectric effect (or Edelstein effect) in noncentrosymmetric superconductors states that a supercurrent can induce spin magnetization. This is an intriguing phenomenon which has potential applications in superconducting spintronic devices. However, the original Edelstein effect only applies to superconductors with polar point group symmetry. In recent years, many new noncentrosymmetric superconductors have been discovered, such as superconductors with chiral lattice symmetry and superconducting transition metal dichalcogenides with various lattice structures. The search for proximity-induced superconductivity in topological materials has generated widespread interest in the condensed matter physics community. The superconducting states inheriting nontrivial topology at interfaces are expected to exhibit exotic phenomena such as topological superconductivity and Majorana zero modes, which hold promise for applications in quantum computation. However, a practical realization of such hybrid structures based on topological semimetals and superconductors has hitherto been limited. Here, we report the strong proximity-induced superconductivity in type-II Weyl semimetal WTe2, in a van der Waals hybrid structure obtained by mechanically transferring NbSe2 onto various thicknesses of WTe2. When the WTe2 thickness (tWTe2) reaches 21 nm, the superconducting transition occurs around the critical temperature (Tc) of NbSe2 with a gap amplitude (Δp) of 0.38 meV and an unexpected ultralong proximity length (lp) up to 7 μm. A nematic topological superconductor has an order parameter symmetry, which spontaneously breaks the crystalline symmetry in its superconducting state. This state can be observed, for example, by thermodynamic or upper critical field experiments in which a magnetic field is rotated with respect to the crystalline axes. The corresponding physical quantity then directly reflects the symmetry of the order parameter. We present a study on the superconducting upper critical field of the Nb-doped topological insulator NbxBi2Se3 for various magnetic field orientations parallel and perpendicular to the basal plane of the Bi2Se3 layers. The data were obtained by two complementary experimental techniques, magnetoresistance and DC magnetization, on three different single crystalline samples of the same batch. Both methods and all samples show with perfect agreement that the in-plane upper critical fields clearly demonstrate a two-fold symmetry that breaks the three-fold crystal symmetry. The two-fold symmetry is also found in the absolute value of the magnetization of the initial zero-field-cooled branch of the hysteresis loop and in the value of the thermodynamic contribution above the irreversibility field, but also in the irreversible properties such as the value of the characteristic irreversibility field and in the width of the hysteresis loop. This provides strong experimental evidence that Nb-doped Bi2Se3 is a nematic topological superconductor similar to the Cu- and Sr-doped Bi2Se3. The superconducting phase of Nb-doped Bi2Se3 is nematic, that is, it has a 2-fold symmetry that breaks the 3-fold symmetry of the crystal. Topological insulators, such as Bi2Se3, can become superconductive when doped, which is interesting because topological superconductors host Majorana fermions, which hold potential for quantum computation. However, the nature of the superconductive pairing in these materials is debated. To settle the question for Nb-doped Bi2Se3, a team led by Rolf Lortz at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology measured the dependence of the superconducting upper critical field on the orientation of an applied magnetic field. These measurements demonstrate that Nb-doped Bi2Se3 has an odd-parity nematic superconducting phase, as further supported by the fact that the data can be fitted with a model for nematic superconductivity.

Significance In solids with an odd number of electrons per unit cell, band theory requires that they are metals, but strong interaction can turn them into insulators, called Mott insulators. In this case, the electrons form local moments that, in turn, form an antiferromagnetic ground state. In 1973, P. W. Anderson proposed that, in certain cases, quantum fluctuations may prevent magnetic order and result in a paramagnetic ground state called a quantum spin liquid. After many years of searching, a few examples have been discovered in the past several years. We point out that a well-studied material, TaS 2 , may be a spin liquid candidate. We propose further experiments that probe the exotic properties of this new state of matter.

Recently, signatures of nonlinear Hall effects induced by Berry-curvature dipoles have been found in atomically thin 1T'/Td-WTe$_2$. In this work, we show that in strained polar transition-metal dichalcogenides(TMDs) with 2H-structures, Berry-curvature dipoles created by spin degrees of freedom lead to strong nonlinear Hall effects. Under an easily accessible uniaxial strain of order 0.2%, strong nonlinear Hall signals, characterized by a Berry-curvature dipole on the order of 1{\AA}, arise in electron-doped polar TMDs such as MoSSe, and this is easily detectable experimentally. Moreover, the magnitude and sign of the nonlinear Hall current can be easily tuned by electric gating and strain. These properties can be used to distinguish nonlinear Hall effects from classical mechanisms such as ratchet effects. Superconducting magnetoelectric effect, which is the current-induced magnetization in a superconductor, mainly focused on the spin magnetization in previous studies, but ignore the effect of the orbital magnetic moments carried by the paired Bloch electrons. In this work, we show that orbital magnetic moments in superconductors can induce large orbital magnetization in the presence of a current. We constructed a unified description for the current-induced spin and orbital magnetization across the superconductivity normal metal phase transition. We find that in a superconductor with uniform pairing, the current-induced magnetization at a given current density is the same as that in its normal metal state, while with the nonuniform superconducting pairing, the current-induced magnetization exhibits an abrupt change in magnitude near the superconductivity normal metal phase transition. Importantly, our theory predicts the orbital magnetoelectric effect in superconducting twisted bilayer graphene which has paired Bloch electrons with large orbital magnetic moments and negligible spin-orbit coupling. We propose that the measurement of the current-induced orbital magnetoelectric effect can be used to detect the possible nonuniform pairings in twisted bilayer graphene and other newly discovered superconductors with non-trivial Berry curvatures., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, plus supplementary material. An external magnetic field is needed to drive a nanowire in proximity to an s-wave superconductor into a topological regime which supports Majorana end states. However, a magnetic field generally suppresses the proximity superconducting gap induced on the nanowire. In recent experiments using InSb nanowires coupled to Al, the induced proximity gap vanishes at magnetic fields B~1T. This results in a small superconducting gap on the wire and a narrow topological regime which is proportional to the strength of the magnetic field. In this work, we show that by placing nanowires in proximity to recently discovered Ising superconductors such as the atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenide(TMD) NbSe2, the topological superconducting gap on the wire can maintain at a large magnetic field as strong as B~10T. This robust topological superconducting gap is induced by the unique equal-spin triplet Cooper pairs of the parent Ising superconductor. The strong magnetic field allows a topological regime ten times larger than those in InSb wires coupled to Al. The interplay between disorder and superconductivity is a subtle and fascinating phenomenon in quantum many-body physics. Conventional superconductors are insensitive to dilute non-magnetic impurities, known as Anderson’s theorem1. Destruction of superconductivity and even superconductor–insulator transitions2–10 occur in the regime of strong disorder. Hence, disorder-enhanced superconductivity is rare and has been observed only in some alloys or granular states11–17. Owing to the entanglement of various effects, the mechanism of enhancement is still under debate. Here, we report a well-controlled disorder effect in the recently discovered monolayer NbSe2 superconductor. The superconducting transition temperatures of NbSe2 monolayers are substantially increased by disorder. Realistic theoretical modelling shows that the unusual enhancement possibly arises from the multifractality18,19 of electron wavefunctions. This work provides experimental evidence of the multifractal superconducting state. Disorder present in monolayer NbSe2 is found to be able to enhance its superconductivity. A systematic study reveals the origin—disorder-induced multifractality of the electron wavefunctions strengthens the local interactions.

Recently, signatures of quantum anomalous Hall states with spontaneous ferromagnetism were observed in twisted bilayer graphenes (TBGs) near 3/4 filling [1, 2]. Importantly, it was demon-strated that an extremely small current can switch the direction of the magnetization. This offers the prospect of realizing low energy dissipation magnetic memories. However, the mechanism of the current-driven magnetization switching is poorly understood as the charge currents in graphene layers are generally believed to be non-magnetic. In this work, we demonstrate that, in TBGs, the twist-induced reduction of lattice symmetry allows a charge current to generate net orbital magnetization at a general filling factor through magnetoelectric effects. Substrate-induced strain and sublattice symmetry breaking further reduce the symmetry such that an out-of-plane orbital magnetization can be generated. Due to the large non-trivial Berry phase of the flat bands, the orbital magnetization of a Bloch state can be as large as tens of Bohr magnetons and therefore a small current would be sufficient to generate a large orbital magnetization. We further demonstrate how the charge current with orbital magnetization can switch the magnetization of the quantum anomalous Hall state near 3/4 filling as observed in the experiments [1, 2]., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, plus supplementary material. Under certain conditions, a fermion in a superconductor can separate in space into two parts known as Majorana zero modes, which are immune to decoherence from local noise sources and are attractive building blocks for quantum computers. Promising experimental progress has been made to demonstrate Majorana zero modes in materials with strong spin–orbit coupling proximity coupled to superconductors. Here we report signatures of Majorana zero modes in a material platform utilizing the surface states of gold. Using scanning tunneling microscope to probe EuS islands grown on top of gold nanowires, we observe two well-separated zero-bias tunneling conductance peaks aligned along the direction of the applied magnetic field, as expected for a pair of Majorana zero modes. This platform has the advantage of having a robust energy scale and the possibility of realizing complex designs using lithographic methods.

In our previous work [arXiv:1803.00999, Phys. Rev. Lett. 121, 046401 (2018)], we found a quantum spin liquid phase with a spinon Fermi surface in the two dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with four-spin ring exchange on a triangular lattice. In this work we dope the spinon Fermi surface phase by studying the $t$-$J$ model with four-spin ring exchange. We perform density matrix renormalization group calculations on four-leg cylinders of a triangular lattice and find that the dominant pair correlation function is that of a pair density wave; i.e., it is oscillatory while decaying with distance with a power law. The doping dependence of the period is studied. This is the first example where pair density wave is the dominant pairing in a generic strongly interacting system where the pair density wave cannot be explained as a composite order and no special symmetry is required., Comment: 4+2 pages, 4+4 figures

Recently, a quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI)/superconductor heterostructure has been realized and shows half-quantized conductance plateaus in two-terminal conductance measurements [Q. L. He et al., Science 357, 294 (2017)]. The half-quantized conductance plateaus are considered as a solid evidence of chiral Majorana edge modes. However, there is a strong debate over the origin of the half-quantized conductance plateaus. In this work, we propose a Josephson junction based on the QAHI/superconductor heterostructure to identify the existence of chiral Majorana edge modes. We find that the critical Josephson current dramatically increases to a peak value when a half-quantized conductance plateau ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{12}={e}^{2}/2h$ is showing up for the $N=1$ chiral topological superconductor phase with a single chiral Majorana mode. Furthermore, we show that the critical Josephson current of the $N=1$ chiral topological superconductor exhibits an $h/e$-period oscillation and is robust to disorder, in contrast to the behaviors of conventional two-dimensional electron gas systems. We also estimate experimentally relevant parameters and believe that the supercurrent can be observed in experiments.

With the recent discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI), which exhibits the conductive quantum Hall edge states without external magnetic field, it becomes possible to create a topological superconductor (SC) by introducing superconductivity into these edge states. In this case, 2 distinct topological superconducting phases with 1 or 2 chiral Majorana edge modes were theoretically predicted, characterized by Chern numbers ( N ) of 1 and 2, respectively. We present spectroscopic evidence from Andreev reflection experiments for the presence of chiral Majorana modes in an Nb/(Cr 0.12 Bi 0.26 Sb 0.62 ) 2 Te 3 heterostructure with distinct signatures attributed to 2 different topological superconducting phases. The results are in qualitatively good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

In this work, we predict the emergence of the valley Edelstein Effect (VEE), which is an electric-field-induced spin polarization effect, in gated monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (MTMDs). We found an unconventional valley-dependent response in which the spin-polarization is parallel to the applied electric field with opposite spin-polarization generated by opposite valleys. This is in sharp contrast to the conventional Edelstein effect in which the induced spin-polarization is perpendicular to the applied electric field. We identify the origin of VEE as combined effects of conventional Edelstein effect and valley-dependent Berry curvatures induced by coexisting Rashba and Ising SOCs in gated MTMDs. In this work, we consider a 3D cubic optical lattice composed of coupled 1D wires with 1D spin-orbit coupling. When the s-wave pairing is induced through Feshbach resonance, the system becomes a topological superfluid with ring nodes, which are the ring nodal degeneracies in the bulk, and supports a large number of surface Majorana zero energy modes. The large number of surface Majorana modes remain at zero energy even in the presence of disorder due to the protection from a chiral symmetry. When the chiral symmetry is broken, the system becomes a Weyl topological superfluid with Majorana arcs. With 3D spin-orbit coupling, the Weyl superfluid becomes a novel gapless phase with spiral Majorana modes on the surface. The Zeeman effect, which is usually considered to be detrimental to superconductivity, can surprisingly protect the superconducting states created by gating a layered transition metal dichalcogenide. This effective Zeeman field, which is originated from intrinsic spin orbit coupling induced by breaking in-plane inversion symmetry, can reach nearly a hundred Tesla in magnitude. It strongly pins the spin orientation of the electrons to the out-of-plane directions and protects the superconductivity from being destroyed by an in-plane external magnetic field. In magnetotransport experiments of ionic-gate MoS$_{2}$ transistors, where gating prepares individual superconducting state with different carrier doping, we indeed observe a spin- protected superconductivity by measuring an in-plane critical field $\textit{B}$$_{c2}$ far beyond the Pauli paramagnetic limit. The gating-enhanced $\textit{B}$$_{c2}$ is more than an order of magnitude larger compared to the bulk superconducting phases where the effective Zeeman field is weakened by interlayer coupling. Our study gives the first experimental evidence of an Ising superconductor, in which spins of the pairing electrons are strongly pinned by an effective Zeeman field.

The superconducting properties of NbSe2 as it approaches the monolayer limit are investigated by means of magnetotransport measurements, uncovering evidence of spin–momentum locking.

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) MX2 (M=W, Mo, Nb, and X=Te, Se, S) with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) possess plenty of novel physics including superconductivity. Due to the Ising SOC, monolayer NbSe$_2$ and gated MoS$_2$ of 2H structure can realize the Ising superconductivity phase, which manifests itself with in-plane upper critical field far exceeding Pauli paramagnetic limit. Surprisingly, we find that a few-layer 1Td structure MoTe$_2$ also exhibits an in-plane upper critical field ($H_{c2,//}$) which goes beyond the Pauli paramagnetic limit. Importantly, the in-plane upper critical field shows an emergent two-fold symmetry which is different from the isotropic $H_{c2,//}$ in 2H structure TMDCs. We show that this is a result of an asymmetric SOC in 1Td structure TMDCs. The asymmetric SOC is very strong and estimated to be on the order of tens of meV. Our work provides the first transport evidence of a new type of asymmetric SOC in TMDCs which may give rise to novel superconducting and spin transport properties. Topological materials which possess topologically protected surface states have attracted much attention in recent years. In this work, we study the critical current of superconductor/inversion symmetry breaking topological material/superconductor junctions. We found surprisingly that, in topological materials with broken inversion symmetry, the magnitude of the critical Josephson currents $|I^{+}_c(B)|$ at fixed magnetic field $B$ is not the same for critical currents $|I^{-}_c(B)|$ flowing in the opposite direction. Moreover, the critical currents violate the $| I_{c}^{\pm}(B)| = |I_{c}^{\pm}(-B)|$ relation and give rise to asymmetric Fraunhofer patterns. We call this phenomenon asymmetric Josephson effect (AJE). Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we exactly solve a model of Fermions hopping on the honeycomb lattice with cluster charge interactions, which has been proposed as an effective model with possible application to twisted bilayer graphene near half-filling. We find an interaction driven semimetal to insulator transition to an insulating phase consisting of a valence bond solid with Kekul\'e pattern. Finite size scaling reveals that the phase transition of the semimetal to Kekul\'e valence bond solid phase is continuous and belongs to chiral XY universality class., Comment: 4+1 pages, 4 figures

Electrons hopping in two-dimensional honeycomb lattices possess a valley degree of freedom in addition to charge and spin. In the absence of inversion symmetry, these systems were predicted to exhibit opposite Hall effects for electrons from different valleys. Such valley Hall effects have been achieved only by extrinsic means, such as substrate coupling, dual gating, and light illuminating. Here, we report the first observation of intrinsic valley Hall transport without any extrinsic symmetry breaking in the non-centrosymmetric monolayer and trilayer MoS2, evidenced by considerable nonlocal resistance that scales cubically with local resistance. Such a hallmark survives even at room temperature with a valley diffusion length at micron scale. By contrast, no valley Hall signal is observed in the centrosymmetric bilayer MoS2. Our work elucidates the topological quantum origin of valley Hall effects and marks a significant step towards the purely electrical control of valley degree of freedom in topological valleytronics., Comment: 22 pages, 4 figures

Time reversal and spatial inversion are two key symmetries for conventional Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superconductivity

Superconducting proximity effect in topological insulator and superconductor hybrid structure has attracted intense attention in recent years in an effort to search for Majorana fermions in condensed matter systems. Here we report on the superconducting proximity effect in a ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}/{\mathrm{NbSe}}_{2}$ junction fabricated with an all-dry transfer method. Experimentally measured differential conductance spectra exhibit a bias-independent conductance plateau (BICP) in the vicinity of zero bias below 7 K and a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) appears below 2 K. We show that the BICP is due to the strong superconducting proximity effect between the superconductor and the topological surface states while the ZBCP is due to the bulk states of ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$. Our study gives direct evidence that the topological surface states can be strongly coupled to a superconductor and clarifies the different roles of surface states and bulk states in superconducting proximity effect.

A recent experiment on Nb-doped ${\mathrm{Bi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Se}}_{3}$ showed that zero field magnetization appears below the superconducting transition temperature. This gives evidence that the superconducting state breaks time-reversal symmetry spontaneously and is possibly in the chiral topological phase. This is in sharp contrast to the Cu-doped case which is possibly in the nematic phase and breaks rotational symmetry spontaneously. By deriving the free energy of the system from a microscopic model, we show that the magnetic moments of the Nb atoms can be polarized by the chiral Cooper pairs and enlarge the phase space of the chiral topological phase compared to the nematic phase. We further show that the chiral topological phase is a Weyl superconducting phase with bulk nodal points which are connected by surface Majorana arcs.

In this work, we show that a giant spin current can be injected into a nodal topological superconductor, using a normal paramagnetic lead, through a large number of zero energy Majorana fermions at the superconductor edge. The giant spin current is caused by the selective equal spin Andreev reflections (SESAR) induced by Majorana fermions. In each SESAR event, a pair of electrons with certain spin polarization are injected into the nodal topological superconductor, even though the pairing in the bulk of the nodal superconductor is spin-singlet s-wave. We further explain the origin of the spin current by showing that the pairing correlation at the edge of a nodal topological superconductor is predominantly equal spin-triplet at zero energy. Superconductivity is realized in Fe 1+ x Te ( x =0.1–0.2) thin films grown on topological insulator Bi 2 Te 3 by molecular beam epitaxy. A thorough analysis of the obtained transport data in terms of the vortex glass theory reveals the occurrence of a spontaneous vortex glass phase transition in the superconducting Fe 1+ x Te films. Such a phase transition is ascribed to the presence of excess Fe in Fe 1+ x Te, indicating the important role of excess Fe in the vortex dynamics of iron chalcogenide. Based on the transport data, a phase diagram of Fe 1+ x Te is also constructed.

We show that Majorana fermions associated with Majorana flat bands emerge as zero energy modes on the [1 1 0] edge of single layer or multilayer nodal superconductors with d x 2 − y 2 - wave pairing and Rashba spin–orbit coupling. Moreover, as long as the global inversion symmetry of the single layer or multilayer superconductor is broken, and in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field parallel to the [1 1 0] edge, the Majorana fermions together with usual fermionic Andreev bound states induce a triple-peak structure in tunnelling spectroscopy experiments. Importantly, we show that the zero bias conductance peak is induced by Majorana fermions. Therefore, tunnelling spectroscopy can be used to probe Majorana fermions in nodal d x 2 − y 2 - wave superconductors.
