Over the years there has been a number of reports in which it is claimed that the bandwidth of a step index type of plastic optical fibre can be increased through mode filtering (or scrambling). In some cases, increases close to 100% have been reported. The penalty for this bandwidth improvement is inevitably loss of signal strength, about 3dB, but this may not always translate into less link length especially close to bandwidth limited link performance. Based on the above, it is proposed that a novel type of connector for standard POF could be constructed, incorporating a mode filtering facility such as 3 or 4 corrugations. During the past few decades, the proliferation in the number of applications for plastic optical fibre has proved to be quite a success. However, its use in networking, especially for peer-to-peer communication has not reached the level expected. Since the invention of the Ethernet cable, the latter has been extensively utilized in the field of networking for its fast and reliable connection providing high data rates at the same time.
