1. Optical Probing of Ultrafast Laser-Induced Solid-to-Overdense-Plasma Transitions

Abstract

Understanding the target dynamics during its interaction with a relativistic ultrashort laser pulse is a challenging fundamental multi-physics problem involving at least atomic and solid-state physics, plasma physics, and laser physics. Already, the properties of the so-called pre-plasma formed as the laser pulse's rising edge ionizes the target are complicated to access in experiments and modeling, and many aspects of this laser-induced transition from solid to overdense plasma over picosecond time scales are still open questions. At the same time, applications like laser-driven ion acceleration require precise knowledge and control of the pre-plasma because the efficiency of the acceleration process itself crucially depends on the target properties at the arrival of the relativistic intensity peak of the pulse. By capturing the dynamics of the initial stage of the interaction, we report on a detailed visualization of the pre-plasma formation and evolution. Nanometer-thin diamond-like carbon foils are shown to transition from solid to plasma during the laser rising edge with intensities < 10^16 W/cm^2. Single-shot near-infrared probe transmission measurements evidence sub-picosecond dynamics of an expanding plasma with densities above 10^23 cm^-3 (about 100 times the critical plasma density). The complementarity of a solid-state interaction model and a kinetic plasma description provides deep insight into the interplay of ionization, collisions, and expansion.

Abstract

Free Electron Lasers (FEL) are commonly regarded as the potential key application of laser wakefield accelerators (LWFA). It has been found that electron bunches exiting from state-of-the-art LWFAs exhibit a normalized 6-dimensional beam brightness comparable to those in conventional linear accelerators. Effectively exploiting this beneficial beam property for LWFA-based FELs is challenging due to the extreme initial conditions particularly in terms of beam divergence and energy spread. Several different approaches for capturing, reshaping and matching LWFA beams to suited undulators, such as bunch decompression or transverse-gradient undulator schemes, are currently being explored. Abstract

Shadowgraphy is a technique widely used to diagnose objects or systems in various fields in physics and engineering. In shadowgraphy, an optical beam is deflected by the object and then the intensity modulation is captured on a screen placed some distance away. However, retrieving quantitative information from the shadowgrams themselves is a challenging task because of the non-linear nature of the process. Here, a novel method to retrieve quantitative information from shadowgrams, based on computational geometry, is presented for the first time. This process can be applied to proton radiography for electric and magnetic field diagnosis in high-energy-density plasmas and has been benchmarked using a toroidal magnetic field as the object, among others. It is shown that the method can accurately retrieve quantitative parameters with error bars less than 10%, even when caustics are present. The method is also shown to be robust enough to process real experimental results with simple pre- and post-processing techniques. This adds a powerful new tool for research in various fields in engineering and physics for both techniques.

Abstract

The necessity for compact table-top x-ray sources with higher brightness, shorter wavelength and shorter pulse duration has led to the development of complementary sources based on laser-plasma accelerators, in contrast to conventional accelerators. Relativistic interaction of short-pulse lasers with underdense plasmas results in acceleration of electrons and in consequence in the emission of spatially coherent radiation, which is known in the literature as betatron radiation. In this article we report on our recent results in the rapidly developing field of secondary x-ray radiation generated by high-energy electron pulses. The betatron radiation is characterized with a novel setup allowing to measure the energy, the spatial energy distribution in the far-field of the beam and the source size in a single laser shot. Furthermore, the polarization state is measured for each laser shot. In this way the emitted betatron x-rays can be used as a non-invasive diagnostic tool to retrieve very subtle information of the electron dynamics within the plasma wave. Abstract

We show experimentally that XUV radiation is produced when a laser pulse is Thomson backscattered from sheets of relativistic electrons which are formed at the rear-surface of a foil irradiated on its front side by a high-intensity laser. An all-optical setup is realized using the Jena Titanium:Sapphire TW laser system (JETI). The main pulse is split into two pulses: one to accelerate electrons from thin aluminum foil targets to energies of the order of some MeV and the other, counterpropagating probe pulse is Thomson-backscattered off these electrons when they exit the target rear side. The process produced photons within a wide spectral range of some tens of eV as a result of the broad electron energy distribution. The highest scattering intensity is observed when the probe pulse arrives at the target rear surface 100 fs after the irradiation of the target front side by the pump pulse, corresponding to the maximum flux of hot electrons at the interaction region. These results can provide time-resolved information about the evolution of the rear-surface electron sheath and hence about the dynamics of the electric fields responsible for the acceleration of ions from the rear surface of thin, laser-irradiated foils., Comment: resubmitted to New Journal of Physics

Abstract

Harmonic generation in the limit of ultra-steep density gradients is studied experimentally. Observations demonstrate that while the efficient generation of high order harmonics from relativistic surfaces requires steep plasma density scale-lengths ($L_p/\lambda < 1$) the absolute efficiency of the harmonics declines for the steepest plasma density scale-length $L_p \to 0$, thus demonstrating that near-steplike density gradients can be achieved for interactions using high-contrast high-intensity laser pulses. Absolute photon yields are obtained using a calibrated detection system. The efficiency of harmonics reflected from the laser driven plasma surface via the Relativistic Oscillating Mirror (ROM) was estimated to be in the range of 10^{-4} - 10^{-6} of the laser pulse energy for photon energies ranging from 20-40 eV, with the best results being obtained for an intermediate density scale-length.

Abstract

We report on a reflective wave-plate system utilizing phase-shifting mirrors (PSM) for a continuous variation of elliptical polarization without changing the beam position and direction. The scalability of multilayer optics to large apertures and the suitability for high-intensity broad-bandwidth laser beams make reflective wave-plates an ideal tool for experiments on relativistic laser-plasma interaction. Our measurements confirm the preservation of the pulse duration and spectrum when a 30-fs Ti:Sapphire laser beam passes the system.

Abstract

Laser-based plasma accelerators (LPA) have successfully demonstrated their capability to generate high-energy electron beams with intrinsically short bunch lengths and high peak currents at a setup with a small footprint. These properties make them attractive drivers for a broad range of different applications including injectors for rf-driven, ring-based light sources. In close collaboration the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Helmholtz Institute Jena aim to develop a 50 MeV plasma injector and demonstrate the injection into a compact storage ring. This storage ring will be built within the project cSTART at KIT. As part of the ATHENA (Accelerator Technology HElmholtz iNfrAstructure) project, DESY will design, setup and operate a 50 MeV plasma injector prototype for this endeavor. Abstract

HELIPORT is a data management solution that aims at making the components and steps of the entire research experiment’s life cycle discoverable, accessible, interoperable and reusable according to the FAIR principles. Among other information, HELIPORT integrates documentation, scientific workflows, and the final publication of the research results - all via already established solutions for proposal management, electronic lab notebooks, software development and devops tools, and other additional data sources. The integration is accomplished by presenting the researchers with a high-level overview to keep all aspects of the experiment in mind, and automatically exchanging relevant metadata between the experiment’s life cycle steps. Computational agents can interact with HELIPORT via a REST API that allows access to all components, and landing pages that allow for export of digital objects in various standardized formats and schemas. An overall digital object graph combining the metadata harvested from all sources provides scientists with a visual representation of interactions and relations between their digital objects, as well as their existence in the first place. Through the integrated computational workflow systems, HELIPORT can automate calculations using the collected metadata. By visualizing all aspects of large-scale research experiments, HELIPORT enables deeper insights into a comprehensible data provenance with the chance of raising awareness for data management.

Now, it is time to focus on the application of laser-plasma accelerated (LPA) beams. The 'Accelerator Technology HElmholtz iNfrAstructure' (ATHENA) of the Helmholtz Association fosters innovative particle accelerators and high-power laser technology. As part of the ATHENAe pillar several different applications driven by LPAs are to be developed, such as a compact FEL, medical imaging and the first realization of LPA-beam injection into a storage ring. The latter endeavor is conducted in close collaboration between Deutsche Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and Helmholtz Institute Jena. In the cSTART project at KIT, a compact storage ring optimized for short bunches and suitable to accept LPA-based electron bunches is in preparation. In this conference contribution we will introduce the 50 MeV LPA-based injector and give an overview about the project goals. The key parameters of the plasma injector will be presented. Abstract

Longitudinal ion acceleration from high-intensity (I ~ [10.sup.20] W[cm.sup.-2]) laser interactions with helium gas jet targets ([n.sub.e] [approximately equal to] 0.04[n.sub.c]) has been observed. The ion beam has a maximum energy for [He.sup.2+] of ([40.sup.+3.sub.-8) MeV and was directional along the laser propagation path, with the highest energy ions being collimated to a cone of less than 10[degrees]. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations have been used to investigate the acceleration mechanism. The time-varying magnetic field associated with the fast electron current provides a contribution to the accelerating electric field as well as a collimating field for the ions. A strong correlation between the plasma density and the ion acceleration was found. A short plasma scale length at the vacuum interface was observed to be beneficial for the maximum ion energies, but the collimation appears to be improved with longer scale lengths due to enhanced magnetic fields in the ramp acceleration region. Abstract

Experiments performed with the high-contrast 0.7-J 35-fs Ti:sapphire laser at the Lund Laser Centre focused into a helium gas jet have produced quasi-monoenergetic electron beams with energies up to 150 MeV. The beam is produced as a result of controlled wavebreaking of a wakefield generated by the relativistically channeled laser beam. Under the best conditions of laser energy and plasma density, a beam with narrow-energy-spread component was produced on every shot with an energy stability of ~10% and a pointing stability of ~6 mrad. Furthermore, it can be deduced that the electron beam originates from a source with both transverse and longitudinal extents < 10 [micro]m, implying a pulselength of < 25 fs. These measurements mark an important improvement in the characterization, as well as repeatability, of laser-plasma-generated electron beams with a single driver laser beam. Abstract

We present a novel technique to align a tiled grating in all five relevant degrees of freedom utilized in the compressor of the high-power chirped-pulse amplification laser system POLARIS at the Institute for Optics and Quantum Electronics, Jena, Germany. With this technique, alignment errors of the two gratings with respect to each other can be detected with an accuracy of 1 [micro]rad for the rotational and 40 nm for the translational degrees of freedom. This is well sufficient to recompress 1030 nm pulses, which were stretched to 2.2 ns before amplification, to their bandwith limit of 150 fs. OCIS codes: 320.5520, 320.1590, 230.1950.

Abstract

An analytical model is presented describing the temporal intensity contrast determined by amplified spontaneous emission in high‐intensity laser systems which are based on the principle of chirped pulse amplification. The model describes both the generation and the amplification of the amplified spontaneous emission for each type of laser amplifier. This model is applied to different solid state laser materials which can support the amplification of pulse durations ≤350 fs . The results are compared to intensity and fluence thresholds, e.g. determined by damage thresholds of a certain target material to be used in high‐intensity applications. This allows determining if additional means for contrast improvement, e.g. plasma mirrors, are required for a certain type of laser system and application. Using this model, the requirements for an optimized high‐contrast front‐end design are derived regarding the necessary contrast improvement and the amplified “clean” output energy for a desired focussed peak intensity. Finally, the model is compared to measurements at three different high‐intensity laser systems based on Ti:Sapphire and Yb:glass. These measurements show an excellent agreement with the model.

Abstract

We present a diode-pumped, electro-optically Q-switched Tm:YAG laser with a cryogenically cooled laser crystal at 120 K. Output pulses of up to 2.55 mJ and 650 ns duration were demonstrated in an actively Q-switched configuration with a repetition rate of 1 Hz. By using cavity dumping the pulse duration was shortened to 18 ns with only a slightly lower output energy of 2.22 mJ. Furthermore, using a simplified rate equation model, we discuss design constraints on the pump fluence in a pulse pump approach for Tm:YAG to maximize the energy storage capability at a given pump power. Abstract

International audience; The Horizon 2020 Project EuPRAXIA ('European Plasma Research Accelerator with eXcellence In Applications') aims at producing a design report of a highly compact and cost-effective European facility with multi-GeV electron beams using plasma as the acceleration medium. The accelerator facility will be based on a laser and/or a beam driven plasma acceleration approach and will be used for photon science, high-energy physics (HEP) detector tests, and other applications such as compact X-ray sources for medical imaging or material processing. EuPRAXIA started in November 2015 and will deliver the design report in October 2019. EuPRAXIA aims to be included on the ESFRI roadmap in 2020.

Abstract

A linear beam transport system, experimentally tested at the Laser Wakefield Accelerator in Jena, Germany, has been carefully analyzed in order to gain a deeper understanding of the experimental results and to develop experimental strategies for the future. This analysis encompassed a detailed characterization of the focusing magnets and an investigation of the effects of source parameters as well as magnet and alignment errors on the observables accessible in the experiment.
