Argon laser iridoplasty was performed in 40 eyes of 33 patients of primary angle closure glaucoma. There were 12 male and 21 female patients. The mean ages of the male and female patients were 51 years and 48.4 years respectively. Forty eyes were divided into two groups. Group I consisted of ten eyes of subacute angle closure glaucoma and group II included thirty eyes of chronic angle closure glaucoma. Argon laser iridoplasty was performed with Coherent 9000 model using laser settings of spot size 200 micron, duration 0.2 second and power 0.7 watt. A total of 80 spots were applied over 360 degree circumference. The intraocular pressure control (below 22 mm Hg) was achieved after iridoplasty in all the eyes (100%) in group I, where as in group II the intraocular pressure was controlled in 70% eyes. The follow up period varied from 3 months to one year with a mean of eight months. The success rate with iridoplasty was directly related to the extent of peripheral anterior synechiae, optic disc cupping and presence of visual field changes.

Forty aphakic eyes, with secondary pupillary membranes, underwent pars plana membranectomy and YAG laser discission randomly. Visual improvement was similar in both the groups. IOP remained low for a week in pars-plana membranectomy while it transiently increased following YAG laser discission Complications like anterior chamber reaction, corneal edema and CME were more after pars plana membranectomy than in YAG laser discission. In membranes thicker than 1.2 mm, only pars plana membranectomy is recommended.

Conjunctival sacs of seventy one leprosy patients, paramedical and medical personnel working in a leprosy home were cultured. None of these eyes had any pathology in the outer eye. Surprisingly, 46.2% of the eyes which showed a positive culture carried accepted pathogens; Staphylococcus aureus being the commonest. Determining the preoperative bacterial flora and their elimination before undertaking intraocular surgery is recommended.

An epidemic of dengue haemorrhagic fever occurred in Delhi during 1988. A total of 21 paediatric patients with dengue haemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome were evaluated from September to November 1988. All the patients had fever, restlessness, ecchymotic spots and ascites. Pleural effusion occurred in 19 patients (90%), and 18 (86%) exhibited each of the following: vomiting, thrombocytopenia, and haemoconcentration. Hepatomegaly was observed in 15 patients (71%) and splenomegaly in three (14%). Titres of haemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibodies against dengue virus type 2 were raised in all the 15 cases from whom sera were collected during the acute stage. Convalescent sera from five patients had increased titres of HI antibodies to dengue virus type 2. The remaining 10 cases exhibited raised IgM antibody levels against dengue virus type 2. The fatality rate for serologically proven cases was 13% (2 of 15 patients), while for all patients (including those diagnosed clinically (6) and serologically (15)) it was 33.3% (7 of 21). Patients who survived had no sequelae, except one who had transient hypertension that lasted for two weeks.

A field experiment comprising three levels of farmyard manure (0, 12.5 and 25 t/ha) in main plot and four nitrogen levels (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg N/ha) in sub plot was conducted during summer 2011 and 2012. Farmyard manure (FYM) @ 12.5 t increased green fodder yield significantly over control. Nitrogen application @ 120 kg / ha produced green fodder yield (442 q/ha) significantly higher than 40 kg N/ha and control but at par with 80 kg N. Green fodder yield obtained with the application of 12.5 t farm yard manure plus 120 kg N was at par with FYM[sub 25+]N[sub 80] but significantly higher than FYM[sub 12.5] + N[sub 80]. Likewise, dry matter, plant height, leaf area index, leaf stem ratio and moisture content also improved significantly with the application of FYM and or nitrogen. Application of either FYM or nitrogen induced crop to achieve tasseling, silking and harvestable stage earlier than unmanured/unfertilized crop. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
