Background: Thyroiditis involves thyroid gland inflammation due to a wide variety of causes. The common varieties are subacute, silent and postpartum thyroiditis. Aims and Objectives: To retrospectively collect demographic data of thyroiditis from Bangalore over the past 5 years. Materials and Methods: Data were collected from three major nuclear medicine centers in Bangalore of the patients who came for technetium (Tc) 99m pertechnetate scan of the thyroid. The diagnosis was based on the Tc 99 scan evidence of thyroiditis in these patients and biochemical evidence of thyrotoxicosis. Results: The total number of cases recorded were 2513. The females were more commonly affected compared with males with sex distribution of 1698 females and 815 females (2:1). The mean age of females was 32.5 ± 11.3 years whereas the mean age of males was 37.2 ± 12.4 years. The highest numbers of cases were recorded in the months of June and August. Conclusions: The females developed thyroiditis frequently and at an earlier age when compared with males. This data could give us an insight into the demographic pattern of thyroiditis in our country and may help in planning future preventive strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims of the Study: The present study was a prospective study done over a period of six months to study demographic, clinical and scan profile of patients with thyroiditis from two nuclear medicine centres at Bengaluru. Methods: The prospective data was collected from two nuclear medicine centres at Bengaluru where the referral was for a probable diagnosis of thyroiditis and the scan findings confirmed absent or poor uptake on Technetium 99m pertechnetate (Tc99m) scan. Results: The total number of patients were 215 with a mean age of 38.18 ± 12.12 years which included 138 females (64.2%) and 77 males (35.8%). The maximum number of referrals were from urban areas (96.3%, N = 207). The presentation with fever was seen in 21.4% cases (N = 46). Neck pain was the presenting complaint in 41.4% (N = 89) patients. Previous history suggestive of thyrotoxicosis was present in 2.8% (N = 6) cases. The maximum patients were from the middle socioeconomic strata (64.3%, N = 137). The TC99m scan showed an absent uptake (0%) in 10.2 % patients while it showed decreased or poor uptake (<0.3%) in 89.8% patients. None of the patients who had been referred for the scan had complaints of ophthalmopathy. Conclusions: The thyroiditis was more common in females at a comparatively younger age as compared to what has been reported in other studies. It was predominant in the urban population mostly belonging to middle socioeconomic strata with neck pain being the common complaint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on preprocedural positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) guidance for lung mass cytology. A case report of an old man with unexplained weight loss and cough with chest pain is presented. It says that PET scan with Fluorodeoxyglucose(FDG) helps in representing metabolically active areas and, along with a CT scan demonstrated at the same time, can help localize the area most probably to offer a diagnostic yield during a fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) or biopsy.
