OBJECTIVE: Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are microbial derived metabolites, which have multiple beneficial properties. The amount of SCFAs depends on several factors, such as age, diet (mainly intake of dietary fiber), and overall health condition. The normal proportion between SCFAs is 3:1:1 for acetate, proprionate and butyrate, respectively. In colorectal cancer (CRC) patients, microbiota alterations have been shown. Consequently, metabolome within the gut might change to a large extent. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the content of SCFAs and the proportion between SCFAs in the stool obtained from CRC patients in preoperative period. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study included 15 patients with CRC in preoperative period. The stool samples were taken and stored at -80°C in the Fahrenheit Biobank BBMRI.pl, Medical University of Gdansk, Poland. The analysis of SCFAs from stool samples was conducted by means of gas chromatography. RESULTS: This study included mainly males (66.67%, n=10). In all patients, there was abnormal proportion between SCFAs. The extremely higher concentration of butyrate was noted in 2 samples (13.33%) compared to the rest of patients. However, based on normal proportion between SCFAs, the results <1 for butyrate were noted in 93.33% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: SCFAs pool is altered in CRC patients, among others characterized by low level of butyrate. It should be considered to administer butyrate supplementation to CRC patients especially prior to surgery to support an appropriate preparation to this treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We measured thermopower, thermal conductivity and electrical resitivity for Ca2Sn sample across 4-350 K temperature range. Contrary to expectations from recent DFT based calculations the thermopower is not particularly large, reaching 7 μV at 350 K. The thermoelectric figure of merit renders this material in unmodified form practically unusable for thermoelectric aplications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

N(1)-methylnicotinamide (MNA(+)) has until recently been thought to be a biologically inactive product of nicotinamide metabolism in the pyridine nucleotides pathway. However, the latest observations imply that MNA(+) may exert antithrombotic and anti-inflammatory effects through direct action on the endothelium. We examined both in vivo and in vitro whether the compound might induce vasorelaxation in human blood vessels through the improvement of nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability and a reduction of oxidative stress mediated by endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) function. MNA(+) treatment (100 mg/m(2) orally) in healthy normocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic subjects increased the l-arginine (l-NMMA)-inhibitable flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of brachial artery responses that also positively correlated with MNA(+) plasma concentrations (r=0.73 for normocholesterolemics and r=0.78 for hypercholesterolemics; P<0.0001). MNA(+) increased FMD at the same concentration range at which it enhanced NO release from cultured human endothelial cells after stimulation with either the receptor-dependent (acetylcholine) or the receptor-independent endothelial NO synthase agonists (calcium ionophore A23187). MNA(+) restored the endothelial NO synthase agonist-stimulated NO release after the exposure of the cells to oxidized low-density lipoprotein. This effect was also associated with the normalization of the [NO]/[superoxide] balance in the endothelial cells. Taken together, the increased NO bioavailability in the endothelium contributes to the vasorelaxating properties of MNA(+). Targeting eNOS with MNA(+) might be therapeutically relevant for functional disorders of the endothelium, such as hypercholesterolemia and atherosclerosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The heavy fermion compound Ce3Co4Sn13 was studied in terms of its thermoelectric properties. To enhance its figure of merit we milled the solid sample and then pressed to obtain a consistent granulated material. The main properties, such as the Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity and electronic resistivity were measured at low (< 300 K) temperatures for both, the solid and the granulated sample. Thermal conductivity was diminished and the Seebeck coefficient was slightly enhanced, while the resistivity of produced material was increased. We explain it by strong electron scattering on defects and grain boundaries present in the sample. The resulting figure of merit ZT was found to be enhanced almost across the whole measured T region. The nutritional value of three pale seeded and one dark seeded variety of Amaranthus caudatus was studied by chemical analyses and in balance experiments with growing rats. Effects of processing: popping, toasting and flaking were also examined. The pale seeds contained about 14% protein, 10% fat, 2.5% ash, 64% starch and 8% of dietary fibre. The black seeds had a much higher content of fibre (16%). The concentration of essential amino acids were high. Lysine ranged from 5.2-6.0 g/16 g N in the grains, and the limiting amino acids were leucine followed by valine or threonine. The grains contained small amounts of tannin (0.3%) and heat-labile protease inhibitor activity, at levels typical of common cereal grains. Digestibility of protein in the pale seeds was high (87%) and quite unaffected by processing. Protein digestibility of the black seeds was lower, and the digestibility was further reduced by toasting. The biological value of the protein was similar in all products, and very high. The content of minerals varied among varieties and was also affected by processing. Phytate: zinc molar ratios were high in most products, and rats fed the amaranth samples with the lowest zinc contents were in negative zinc balance. In general, femur zinc concentrations were rather low. However, amaranth is an unconventional crop which deserves further attention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
