2. Batch-Softmax Contrastive Loss for Pairwise Sentence Scoring Tasks

Abstract

The use of contrastive loss for representation learning has become prominent in computer vision, and it is now getting attention in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Here, we explore the idea of using a batch-softmax contrastive loss when fine-tuning large-scale pre-trained transformer models to learn better task-specific sentence embeddings for pairwise sentence scoring tasks. We introduce and study a number of variations in the calculation of the loss as well as in the overall training procedure; in particular, we find that data shuffling can be quite important. Our experimental results show sizable improvements on a number of datasets and pairwise sentence scoring tasks including classification, ranking, and regression. Abstract

Credit assignment is a fundamental problem in reinforcement learning, the problem of measuring an action's influence on future rewards. Explicit credit assignment methods have the potential to boost the performance of RL algorithms on many tasks, but thus far remain impractical for general use. Recently, a family of methods called Hindsight Credit Assignment (HCA) was proposed, which explicitly assign credit to actions in hindsight based on the probability of the action having led to an observed outcome. This approach has appealing properties, but remains a largely theoretical idea applicable to a limited set of tabular RL tasks. Moreover, it is unclear how to extend HCA to deep RL environments. In this work, we explore the use of HCA-style credit in a deep RL context. We first describe the limitations of existing HCA algorithms in deep RL that lead to their poor performance or complete lack of training, then propose several theoretically-justified modifications to overcome them. We explore the quantitative and qualitative effects of the resulting algorithm on the Arcade Learning Environment (ALE) benchmark, and observe that it improves performance over Advantage Actor-Critic (A2C) on many games where non-trivial credit assignment is necessary to achieve high scores and where hindsight probabilities can be accurately estimated., Comment: 8 pages plus 8 page appendix

Abstract

The concentration of main organic and inorganic pollutants (heavy metals, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, radionuclides) in surface waters and in water-soil solutions was analysed on three keysites within the permafrost zone: Tazovsky Peninsula (North-West Siberia), Kolyma Lowland (North Yakutia) and adjacent to Yakutsk (Central Yakutia). In the majority of sampling points that are not directly impacted by human activity, the pollutants accumulate in the uppermost organogenic and organo-mineral horizons of natural soils. At the human-affected keysites the major pollutants may accumulate not only in the superficial horizons of the disturbed soils due to the surface runoff but also in the central parts of the profile, in the material buried by cryogenic, solifluction or fluvial processes and in some cases – in the suprapermafrost horizons and in the upper layer of permafrost transported via suprapermafrost water runoff.

Abstract

This is to study the methodological foundations of perceptual mapping in printing industry enterprises. This research has a practice focus which affects the choice of its methodological framework. The authors use such scientific research as analysis of cause-effect relationships, synthesis, problem analysis, expert evaluation and image visualization methods. In this paper, the authors present their assessment of the competitive environment of major printing industry companies in Kirov oblast; their assessment employs perceptual mapping enables by Minitab 14. This technique can be used by experts in the field of marketing and branding to assess the competitive environment in any market. The object of research is printing industry in Kirov oblast. The most important conclusion of this study is that in perceptual mapping, all the parameters are integrated in a single system and provide a more objective view of the company’s market situation.

Abstract

The paper describes the analysis of stress-strain state of complex-shaped bodies that come into contact over surfaces of conforming shape. The intermediate layer placed between these bodies has nonlinear properties depending on the load history. These properties may be associated with the microstructure of the surface layers of the materials of the contacting bodies. They can also be determined by the properties of network structure materials, polymers, rubber-like materials, sprays, gaskets, etc. The effect of these properties on the contact pressure distribution is illustrated by the example of hydraulic pistons. It is established that with the change of properties of intermediate layers the character of contact pressure distribution changes together with the locations of minima and maxima of contact pressure. Moreover, the contact area itself changes size and shape. Peculiarities of the stress-strain state of the contacting bodies are also determined. Possibilities of control of contact pressure distributions and stress-strain state of contacting bodies by special choice of intermediate layer properties are established., У роботі описані результати досліджень напружено-деформованого стану складнопрофільних тіл, які контактують на поверхнях близької форми. При цьому проміжний шар, що розміщується між цими тілами, має нелінійні властивості, залежні від історії навантаження. Ці властивості можуть бути зумовлені мікроструктурою поверхневих шарів матеріалів контактуючих тіл. Також вони можуть визначатися властивостями матеріалів мережевої структури, полімерів, гумоподібних матеріалів, напилень, прокладок тощо. На прикладі поршнів гідрооб’ємних передач проілюстровано вплив цих властивостей на розподіл контактного тиску. Установлено, що зі зміною властивостей проміжних шарів змінюється характер розподілу контактного тиску, також змінюються зони розташування мінімумів та максимумів напружень. Крім того, сама область контакту змінює розміри і форму. Також визначені особливості напружено-деформованого стану у контактуючих тілах. Установлені можливості управління розподілами контактного тиску і напружено-деформованим станом контактуючих тіл за рахунок цілеспрямованої зміни властивостей проміжних шарів.

Abstract

The contact interaction of bodies with surfaces of similar shape is investigated in the work. Cases of bodies with contact surfaces, the gap between which is a function of two coordinates, are considered. On the example of semi-matrices of molds the regularities of contact pressure distribution are established. The effect of geometry variation away from the nominal shape as well as the properties of the intermediate layer on contact pressure distribution is evaluated. The contact of bodies whose surfaces coincide in the nominal state along one line is also investigated. The influence of perturbations of the gap shape between these bodies along the lines of incidence was investigated on the example of rollers. The influence of such perturbation on the contact pressure distribution is demonstrated. The influence of the perturbation of the crossing angle between the rollers and the properties of the intermediate layer on the contact pressure distribution is also investigated. It was established that ultimate performance of machine units that contain parts in conforming contact are determined not by the nominal shape of the working surfaces but rather by the actual shape due to the deformations under the loads., У роботі досліджена контактна взаємодія тіл із поверхнями близької форми. Розглянуті випадки тіл із контактуючими поверхнями, зазор між якими є функцією двох координат. На прикладі напівматриць прес-форм установлені закономірності розподілу контактного тиску. Ураховано вплив відхилення геометричної форми контактуючих поверхонь від номінальної, а також властивостей проміжного шару на розподіл контактного тиску. Також досліджено контакт тіл, поверхні яких у номінальному стані уздовж однієї лінії співпадають. На прикладі роликів досліджено вплив збурень форми зазору між цими тілами уздовж ліній співпадіння. Продемонстровано вплив такого збурення на розподіл контактного тиску. Також досліджено вплив збурення кута схрещування між роликами та властивостей проміжного шару на розподіл контактного тиску. Установлено, що технічні характеристики вузлів та виробів, у які включені контактуючі тіла із близькою формою поверхонь, визначаються не номінальними формами цих поверхонь, а формами у актуальному (деформованому під дією системи експлуатаційних сил) стані.
