19. Dung Beetle Improves soil Bacterial Diversity and Enzyme Activity and Enhances Growth and Antioxidant Content of Chinese Cabbage (Brassica rapassp. pekinensis)

Abstract

Dung beetles have been used to enhance soil health and crop growth and yields, but their effects on soil enzymology and microbial diversity are seldom reported. The present work reports on beneficial effects of dung beetles on soil enzyme activity, bacterial diversity and growth and antioxidant content of Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapassp. pekinensis). The soil amended with cow dung only (CD), or with dung broken down by dung beetles (DB), was compared with untreated control (CO). Soil bacterial diversity was determined through 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and enzymological tests were used for soil enzyme activity. Dung beetles significantly increased acid phosphatase, urease, cellulase, catalase and β-glucosidase activities in the soil compared with CD or control. Bacterial alpha-diversity significantly increased in DB when compared with CD or control. Microbial carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) were significantly higher in DB than in CD and in CD than control. The DB and CD treatments also significantly enhanced plant growth and the content of antioxidants (total flavonoids, polyphenols and vitamin C) and phytohormones indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), trans-zeatin riboside (ZR) and gibberellic acid (GA3) compared with control, while a significant reduction was noted in abscisic acid (ABA) in DB compared with CD or control plants. Correlation analysis confirmed that the enzyme activities are pH dependent, as pH was significantly lowered by DB compared with CD or control. Our results suggest that use of dung beetles in conventional practices could be an effective strategy to improve soil nutrient availability and microbial activity and antioxidant content of Chinese cabbage.

Abstract

In order to illustrate their tolerance mechanism, four leading cultivars of Brassica napus (Mianyou 15, Guohaoyou 8, Yiyou 21, and Mianyou 16) were investigated to study the effects of Clopyralid, Benazolin, and Clethodium on physio-chemical and ultrastructural attributes of Brassica napus at during seed germination stage, by various concentrations (0.0, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.3 μg/10 mL) of Clopyralid, Benazolin, and Clethodium to rape seedlings in terms of various physiological and biochemical measurements and microscopic analysis. The main results were as follows: low concentration (0.5 μg/10 ml) of Clopyralid, Benazolin, and Clethodium had no significant effect on Brassica napus CVS. It was found that with the increasing of treated concentrations, the growth of Brassica napus was inhibited more when the concentration of Clopyralid, Benazolin, and Clethodium was higher than 1.3 μg·L-1. It inhibited the net photosynthetic rate, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence value, and anti-enzyme activities of Brassica napus. Moreover, it increased lipid peroxidation, accumulated reactive oxygen species, and damaged the ultrastructure of chloroplasts and mitochondria in mesophyll cells. In addition, the ability of resistance to the stress of Clopyralid, Benazolin, and Clethodium in all cultivars shows higher sensitivity which is more effective. Therefore, this study defined the effect of selected herbicides on Brassica napus, and the findings have great significance in extending the calculation by field application of those herbicides. Abstract

Agarwood is mainly used to make incense, perfume, traditional Chinese medicine, and other products. In some parts of China, some consumers use cigarettes that contain agarwood. Not all Aquilaria trees can generate agarwood; only trees that are damaged by natural and artificial means form resin. Due to the short time of forming resin, there are some differences in the quality of agarwood. This paper studies the effects of the application of cultivated agarwood in incense, cigarettes, and essential oil. First, the differences in combustion as an incense of this cultivated agarwood and three samples of natural agarwood were researched, and the cytotoxic and genotoxic of aerosols of combustion were tested. Subsequently, the effect of the application of this cultivated agarwood in cigarettes was studied. The particulate matter particles of four samples of agarwood incense burning smoke were detected. The ultrafine particles and fine particles accounted for the vast majority (more than 99%) by number and by mass, and these can enter the human alveoli and have a negative impact on health.
