PurposeThe purpose of this study was to examine adverse outcomes associated with cesarean deliveries and to assess potential confounding factors.Design/methodology/approachA hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from September 1−30, 2019 using mixed methods of data collection. Multistage sampling was used to draw the eligible study participants. The sample size was calculated using the single population proportion formula. A systematic random sampling technique was used to draw the sample size. 180 original medical records were excluded because of having missed information, leaving 1,618 women as the study population. We used the questionnaire adapted from the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey to collect quantitative data and analyzed using SPSS version 22, while thematic analysis for qualitative measures was used to generate themes regarding associated perspectives of participants from a community.FindingsMore than 383 women delivered by cesarean section. 20% of the mothers with the mean age at birth of 26.1 ± 4.8 experienced adverse outcomes. Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) was used to measure the association of determinants and was 2.95 (95% CI 1.19–7.29) for nonuse of antenatal care, 3.18 (95% CI 1.43–6.94) for nonuse of prophylaxis, 4.28 (95% CI 1.58−11.61) for history of medical illness and 7.09 (95% CI 1.19−45.59) for use of substandard operation set up compared with their counterparts.Research limitations/implicationsStrengths of the study include the finding of the study are reliably reported in mixed study methods examining hospital-based institutional and personal risk factors and exploring the whole community's perspectives. However, the important limitations of the study indicate that the study poses a number of challenges related to studying design, therefore there was not sufficient evidence of causality to draw conclusions from the findings. In addition, the study was conducted at a single hospital so that it is not convenient to generalize the findings of the study for setting different in social and economic status.Originality/valueBased on the findings, attention has been drawn to healthcare personnel to provide training and consultation services for pregnant women and for health care administration to ensure standard set up for operation.

Background: Acute diarrhoea is a major global health problem, and the developing countries like Ethiopia bear the huge share of the burden. As of 2015, Ethiopia stands sixth among fifteen high diarrhoea death occurring countries in the world. Chire district is one of the affected areas in South Ethiopia despite the absence of scientific evidences of driving factors. Thus, this study was aimed to assess the determinants of acute diarrhoea among under-five year aged children in Chire district of Southern Ethiopia. Methods: Facility based unmatched case-control study was conducted in three purposely selected health centers. Five hundred twelve children were included into two groups, 256 cases and 256 controls. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the study subjects. Standardized structured questionnaire was used for data collection and SPSS version 20.0 for data analysis. Descriptive analysis, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression model were used to identify the associated factors. Results: The study showed that age of 6-11 months [AOR: 2.43, 95% CI, (1.28, 4.61)], five or more persons in the house-hold [AOR: 2.69, 95%CI, (1.50, 4.83)], inappropriate disposal of infant feces [AOR: 3.69, 95%CI, (1.13, 6.49)], lack of vitamin-A supplementation [AOR: 3.44, 95%CI, (1.82, 6.49)], maternal history of recent diarrhoea [AOR: 1.68, 95%CI, (1.07, 2.65)] and poor knowledge of respondents about risk factors were significantly associated with acute diarrhoea. Conclusion: Majorities of identified findings have strong association with the maternal or care-takers behavior. Thus, the responsible bodies, especially the district health office and the health extension workers are highly required to provide the intensive and regular health education on the causes and consequences of disease. In addition, vitamin-A should be supplemented as per national guideline.

Background: Failure to provide sufficient nutrients during rapid rates of growth results in malnutrition, which is complex in its etiology and increasing in its manifestations. Ethiopia is one of the developing countries where malnutrition and communicable diseases represent the major health problems, and children are the more vulnerable group than others. Objectives: To assess magnitude of protein energy malnutrition and associated factors among children aged 6-59 months in Wondogenet district, southern Ethiopia. Methods: A community based cross-sectional study was employed on 422 mother-child pairs of 6-59 months old children in April 2017 using both quantitative and qualitative methods. A pretested semi-structured questionnaire and anthropometric measurement were used to collect data. Logistic regression was fitted to identify associated factors, and Focused Group Discussion was used to substantiate the quantitative finding. Result: The analysis of this study revealed that, 45.5%, 38.7% and 15.7% of children were stunted, underweight and severely wasted respectively. The major predictors of stunting were weight at birth and food distributions in the households. Age of the children was independently associated with wasting and underweight. Background: Skilled birth attendance is correlated with lower maternal mortality rates globally. Providing skilled care during pregnancy and delivery reduces maternal deaths. Objective: This study was aimed to estimate the prevalence of skilled birth attendance and factors affecting it. Methods: A community based cross sectional study was conducted from April 18 to 28, 2014 in Loka-Abaya district, southeast Ethiopia. Multistage sampling technique was used for selection of study participants. A pretested semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Bivirate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify the determinants of skilled birth. Results: A total of 550 women participated in the study. The mean age of the subjects was 18.61 ± 2.269 years. 41.2% of the subjects attended 1-6 grade schooling. 26.8% of the mothers gave birth at health facilities. Only 13.9% of the mothers encountered at least one complication. The study showed that age and educational status of the mothers and husbands, frequency of antenatal visit, birth order, and maternal knowledge and prior experience of delivering at a health facility were independent predictors of skilled birth attendance. Conclusions: The study revealed that the prevalence of utilization of skilled birth attendance for the recent birth was low. Younger age, educational status of mothers and their husbands, lesser birth order, frequency of antenatal care, previous experience of delivery at health institutions and maternal knowledge had positively affected skilled birth attendance. Thus it is recommended that the responsible bodies should strive to improve the awareness and health seeking behavior of mothers.
