Extensive red/brown precipitates of unknown origin and composition have caused ecological degradation of a wetland nature reserve (the Water Kingdom Biosphere Reserve) in the hemiboreal zone in south Sweden. Chemical analyses of samples containing the precipitates showed strong dominates of Fe and elevated levels of rare earth elements (REEs), Be, and U. In addition, synchrotron-based analyses indicated that the Fe in these precipitates was bound largely in akageneite and/or schwertmannite. Under nearby farmlands, acid sulfate soils, developing on sulfide-bearing sediments and notorious for abundant export of metals, were identified and found to be widespread, deep (down to the sampling depth of 180 cm or deeper), and very acidic (minimum pH range for soil profiles: 2.8–3.5). In-between the farmland and wetland was a central drain that can act as both a transporter and sink of elements leached from the acid sulfate soils. In the drain had accumulated sediments that had strongly elevated concentrations of Al (15%), ∑REE (2725 mg/kg), Be (15 mg/kg), and U (37 mg/kg). Based on these data and features, a conceptual model for the areas was proposed. The acid sulfate soil releases several major and trace elements, including Fe2+, which are transported in acidic waters via drainpipes to the central drain where pH increases, causing extensive precipitation of Al, REEs, Be, and U as well as Fe2+ oxidation and formation of Fe oxyhydroxides and oxyhydroxysulfates. A substantial part of the Fe2+ in the drain water, however, remains in solution, so when this water is ultimately pumped to the wetland, large amounts of Fe2+ together with significant amounts of Al, REEs, Be, and U and transported to the wetland where Fe2+ is finally oxidized, precipitated and retained. Yet several other metals, leached abundantly from the acid sulfate soils (Mn, Zn, Ni, Co, and Cd), were not found in elevated levels in any of the recipients and therefore most likely have been transported beyond our

Background: Soils are important carbon (C) sinks or sources and thus of utmost importance for global carbon cycling. Particularly, subsoils are considered to have a high potential for additional C storage due to mineral surfaces still available for sorptive stabilization. Aims: Little information exists about the extent to which additional litter-derived C is transferred to and stabilized in subsoils. This study aimed at evaluating the role of litter-derived dissolved organic matter (DOM) inputs for the formation of stable mineral-associated C in subsoils. Methods: We carried out a multiple-method approach including field labeling with 13C-enriched litter, exposure of 13C-loaded reactive minerals to top- and subsoils, and laboratory sorption experiments. Results: For temperate forest soils, we found that the laboratory-based C sink capacity of subsoils is unlikely to be reached under field conditions. Surface C inputs via litter leachates are little conducive to the subsoil C pool. Only 0.5% of litter-derived C entered the subsoil as DOM within nearly 2 years and most of the recently sorbed C is prone to fast microbial mineralization rather than long-term mineral retention. Desorption to the soil solution and an adapted microbial community re-mobilize organic matter in subsoils faster than considered so far. Conclusions: We conclude that the factors controlling the current mineral retention and stabilization of C within temperate forest subsoils will likewise limit additional C uptake. Thus, in contrast to their widely debated potential to accrue more C, the role of forest subsoils as future C sink is likely overestimated and needs further reconsideration.

Microorganisms interact with different soil components, such as varying substrates and soil minerals, to drive soil processes and functionality. They can be influenced by the environment, but they themselves can influence their environment by their activities, for example through the production of extracellular enzymes and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The formation and stability of aggregates as the backbone of the soil structure, for instance, are thought to be largely influenced by soil microorganisms, or vice versa. There remain, however, open questions as to whether and how microorganisms can influence soil aggregation. While microbes are influencing their environment their interaction with the soil minerals could also change their responses upon adsorption - affecting their influence on soil aggregation. Therefore, the overarching goal of this thesis was to investigate the effect of soil minerals, in particular clay content, on the composition and activity of soil microbial community, with a specific focus on enzyme activities and EPS. Finally, the microbial control of soil aggregation through the influence of substrate availability was explored. In total, two adsorption experiments and two incubation experiments were conducted using soils manipulated experimentally with increasing clay content. The sandy soil was amended with different amounts of soil minerals (i.e. montmorillonite) to achieve a gradient in clay content. For the first incubation experiment, organic substrates differing in decomposability (i.e., starch and cellulose) were added to the soil to stimulate microbial activities and incubated for 80 days. Soil samples from the first incubation experiment were analysed after 0, 3, 10, 20, 40 and 80 days for enzyme activities, microbial community composition, biomass C, EPS-protein and polysaccharide. Background: Soil microbes are key drivers of carbon (C) and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems, and their properties are influenced by the relationship between resource demand and availability. - Aims: Our objective was to investigate patterns of microbial properties and their controls to understand whether they differ between soils derived from geochemically contrasting parent material in tropical montane forests. - Methods: We measured microbial biomass C (MBC/Soil), potential extracellular enzyme activity (pEEA), and assessed microbial investments in C and nutrient acquisition at the beginning and end of a 120-day laboratory incubation experiment using soils developed from three geochemically contrasting parent material (i.e., mafic, mixed sediment, and felsic) and three soil depths (0–70 cm). - Results: We found that MBC/Soil and pEEA were highest in soils developed from the mafic parent material. Microbial investment in C acquisition was highest in soils developed from mixed sedimentary rocks and lowest in soils developed from the felsic parent material. We propose that our findings are related to the strength of contrasting mineral-related C stabilization mechanisms and varying C quality. No predominant microbial investment in nitrogen (N) acquisition was observed, whereas investment in phosphorus (P) acquisition was highest in subsoils. We found lower microbial investment in C acquisition in subsoils indicating relatively high C availability, and that microbes in subsoils can substantially participate in C cycling and limit C storage if moisture and oxygen conditions are suitable. Geochemical soil properties and substrate quality were important controls on MBC/Soil per unit soil organic C (MBC/SOC), particularly after the exhaustion of labile and fast cycling C, that is, at the end of the incubation. - Conclusion: Although a laboratory incubation experiment cannot reflect real-world conditions, it allowed us to understand how soil properties affect mi
