3. Attract or repel: how street features shape pedestrians' leisure walks in cities.

Abstract

The paper presents a field study analysing how pedestrians walked for leisure purposes in a familiar urban area, and why they walked as they did. Using mobile-based GPS, the walking trajectories of 44 participants were recorded, followed by the administration of a post-walk survey. Results show that participants gravitated towards five distinct paths that were similar in length (three shorter and two longer paths), yet observably different with respect to specific street features. Correspondingly, participants rated street features associated with these differences as factors that either attracted them towards, or repelled them away, from walking in specific streets. Abstract

The liquid and the amorphous Al90Sm10 marginal metallic glassy alloy are investigated using Molecular Dynamics. The Al90Sm10 system consisting of 32,000 atoms is simulated under the constant number of atoms, pressure, and temperature (NPT) ensemble where the temperature and pressure are controlled via Nose–Hoover thermostat and barostat, respectively. The corresponding liquid model is initially held at 2300 K; then, the liquid is continuously cooled down to 300 K with a constant cooling rate of 1010 Ks−1, during which representative structures were obtained at each 200 K intervals. At every critical interval, radial distribution functions and structure factors are calculated. Local structural arrangements are analyzed using the Voronoi tessellation technique. These analyses indicate a chemically inhomogeneous liquid structure with large pure Al regions divided by a network of Sm-rich clusters, due to the high correlation of Al atoms at high temperatures. As the temperature of the liquid decreases, the amount of Al correlated with Sm in the first shell neighborhood increases. This makes the pure Al regions become smaller in size and widely separated. These pure Al regions in the amorphous solid are thought to be the possible nucleation sites for fcc-Al nanocrystals observed upon the devitrification of marginal metallic glasses. Abstract

Digital Songlines is an Australasian CRC for Interaction Design (ACID) project that is developing protocols, methodologies, and toolkits to facilitate the collection, education and sharing of indigenous cultural heritage knowledge. This research will illustrate significant Australian Indigenous spaces such as the Mt Moffatt area at Carnarvon Gorge in south-west Queensland and areas around the Pilbara in Western Australia. The project explores the areas of effective recording, content management and virtual reality delivery capabilities that are culturally sensitive and involve the indigenous custodians, leaders and communities in those areas as well as how players in a serious gaming sense can experience indigenous virtual heritage in a high fidelity fashion with culturally appropriate interface tools.

Abstract

The crystallization kinetics and microstructural dynamics associated with devitrifying a melt-spun CuZr metallic glass were investigated using isothermal treatments, in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction, conventional and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The analysis of isothermal transformations allows us to more clearly unravel the complex interplay between nucleation and growth of competing stable and metastable phases. The isothermal devitrification response was found to involve the CuZr, CuZr, and CuZr phases, consistent with previously reported constant heating rate experiments, but here we have resolved the phase evolution and structural characteristics of the transformation, including the very early stages of crystallization. At 671 K (398 °C), the isothermal transformation starts with the formation of the CuZr phase, which grows in a generally equiaxed morphology. At a size of approximately 100 nm, the growth of the CuZr particles is interrupted by the precipitation of a thin layer of the CuZr phase, upon which the metastable CuZr (B2) grows epitaxially. Crystallization kinetics are quantified here though in situ measurements (HEXRD, DSC) and ex situ microstructural analysis (TEM, HRTEM). Finally, the influences of chemical partitioning, diffusion, and crystallographic orientation on this sequence are examined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

41. Synthesis and characterization of hydrothermally grown potassium titanate nanowires

Abstract

Potassium titanate (KT) nanowires were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal reaction between TiO2 and aqueous KOH solution. The effects of KOH concentration and reaction time on hydrothermal formation and KT nanowire growth were investigated. The nanowire growth mechanism was elucidated using a combined study of powder X-ray diffraction, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results revealed that hydrothermal growth was initiated by the formation of amorphous-like Ti-O-K sheets in anatase. Increasing hydrothermal reaction time caused the transformation of anatase to Ti-O-K sheets, from which potassium hexa-titanate (K2Ti6O13) nuclei formed and grew to establish one-dimensional morphology through preferential growth along the b-axis. It was revealed that the hydrothermal reactions followed a quite different mechanism than the well-known calcination route. Potassium tetra-titanate (K2Ti4O9) crystals formed in the amorphous region using the hexa-titanate phase as a nucleation site for heterogeneous crystallization. Increasing the KOH concentration in the solution accelerated the hydrothermal reaction rate.

Abstract

Hybrid reverse Monte Carlo simulations of the structure of Zr50Cu45Al5 bulk metallic glass incorporating medium-range structure from fluctuation electron microscopy data and short-range structure from an embedded atom potential produce structures with significant fractions of icosahedral- and crystal-like atomic clusters. Similar clusters group together into nanometer-scale regions, and relaxation transforms crystal-like clusters into icosahedral clusters.
