Abstract

In order to derive the values of the interaction parameter, $e_O^C$, in carbon-saturated {Fe-C} liquid alloys, as defined below; $$\log \,h_O = \log [\% {\rm O}] + e_O^C [\% {\rm C}]_{{\rm Sat}} ,$$ an electrochemical technique incorporating zirconia solid electrolyte was applied for the direct measurements of the Henrian activities of oxygen, hO, between 1623 and 1723 K, while the concentrations of oxygen and carbon in pct by weight, [%O] and [%C]Sat, respectively, were determined by using a conventional LECO analyzer. The results can be summarized as $$e_O^C = - 0.17 \pm 0.02\;{\rm and}\;[\% {\rm O}] = 7.1\,h_O$$ [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

46. OBSERVATIONS OF RADIO SPOTS AT 4000 Mc/s

Abstract

Observations of E-W brightness distribution on the solar disk at 4000 Mc have been carried out with 8-element interferometer with quarter-wavelength plates since June 1954. In this paper the results of observations of the radio spots in 1955 are described. It was observed that the radiation from the radio spot has a small degree of circularly polarized component. The radio spot in the northern hemisphere radiated the excess of r.h. circularly polarized component in the east side of the central meridian, and in most cases the sense of the polarization reversed near the central meridian. The opposite sense was observed in the southern hemisphere. It was confirmed by direct measurement that the sense of polarization varies generally according to the rule found by Piddington and Minnett, i.e. it depends on the position of the radio spot and sunspot cycle. The value of % polarization usually does not exceed 10%.

47. POLARIZATION OF SOLAR RADIO BURSTS AT MICROWAVE FREQUENCIES I

Abstract

The intensity and polarization of solar radio bursts have been observed at 9400, 3750, 2000 and 1000 Mc/s since July, 1957. In this paper the results of observations during 6 months are described. In most bursts at microwave frequencies, the difference in the intensity of two circularly polarized components is observed. At 3750 Mc/s, the bursts of small degree of polarization (less than 10%) are predominant, compared with other frequencies. At 2000 and 1000 Mc/s the circularly polarized bursts were occasionally observed, but not at 9400 and 3750 Mc/s and at 3750 Mc/s the linearly polarized components were not observed. In most bursts observed at four frequencies, the sense of polarization reverses near 3750 or 2000 Mc/s and the degree of polarization is generally small at 3750 Mc/s. At 9400 Mc/s, it seems that the sense of polarization correlates with the position of the source on the solar disk. Further observations will be continued to investigate the relation between them.

Abstract

The IPS observations of the high-latitude source 3C48 are used to derive the distribution of the solar wind velocity in longitude and latitude for periods of several rotations during 1974-1979, by model calculations. The observations during 1974-1978 show the existence of the north polar high-speed (800 km/sec) region. This region extended from the pole down to 45 deg to approx 50 deg latitude for most of 1974-1977, while the region contracted up to 80 deg in 1978 and was hardly observed in early 1979.
