21. Perceptual narrowing towards adult faces is a cross-cultural phenomenon in infancy: A Behavioral and near-infrared spectroscopy study with Japanese infants

Abstract

Recent data showed that, in Caucasian infants, perceptual narrowing occurs for own-race adult faces between 3 and 9 months of age, possibly as a consequence of the extensive amount of social and perceptual experience accumulated with caregivers and/or other adult individuals of the same race. We explored the neural correlates of perceptual narrowing for own-race adul faces by using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). In Experiment 1, we confirmed that Japanese infants showed perceptual narrowing for adult faces between 3 and 9 months of age. In Experiment 2, we measured hemodynamic responses to adult and infant faces in 9 months-olds, and revealed adult faces induced significant increases in hemodynamic responses in the right temporal areas. Our data suggest that perceptual narrowing towards adul faces is a cross-cultural phenomenon occuring between 3- and 9-months of life, and translates by the 9 months of age into a right-hemispheric specialization in the processing of adult faces

Abstract

Meningitis, the inflammation of the meningeal tissues surrounding the brain, is often the result of bacterial infection. However, such inflammation may also arise from irritation of the meninges by drugs or by pathological conditions unrelated to infection. In such cases, it is called aseptic meningitis. Occasionally, meningitis may result from epidermoid or dermoid cysts. In these conditions, tumor-like cysts develop from cells that should have been skin cells, but have become displaced during embryonic development. Biochemical substances leaking from these fluid-filled cysts, which may contain oils and sweaty secretions, and even hair, are thought to be the cause of the meningitis in such cases. The authors report a case in which recurrent bouts of aseptic meningitis in a 36-year-old man were found to be related to the presence of a neuroepithelial cyst. In contrast with dermoid and epidermoid cysts, neuroepithelial cysts arise from ependymal cells, which line the fluid-filled ventricles of the brain, or from choroid plexus cells, which help secrete the cerebrospinal fluid. In the present case, CT scanning without enhancement revealed no abnormalities. Magnetic resonance imaging, weighted for T2 resonance with the magnetic field, demonstrated the presence of a cystic mass near the cerebellum and medulla oblongata. The mass was in the cerebellomedullary cistern, a large space underneath the meninges filled with cerebrospinal fluid. The cyst was partially removed by surgery, and the fluid contained within the cyst was released. Microscopic examination of the cyst revealed its structure to be a thick layer of glial cells lined with cuboidal cells with tiny cilia, much like the normal ependymal lining of the ventricles. The authors suspect that the recurrent nature of the patient's aseptic meningitis was a result of cycles of increased fluid pressure within the cyst and subsequent leakage or rupture.
